Darn, I was a figure skater for a few years but I gave up a while ago (bad coaches and too much pressure to do well, kind of ruined the fun.) Then I watched Yuri On Ice and I want to FUDGING GRAB MY ICE SKATES THAT ARE NOW TWO SIZES TOO SMALL AND JUST *START SPINNING*
I am thinking about starting to learn how to skate then work into learning how to figure skate. I am a male 37. Your videos are great!! Is there anything I should do or expect when getting started. Should I wear a helmet,knee pads,wrist braces, elbow pads and butt shorts or do I need some of those or any of them? Any tips Suggestions, things to do, exercises I may need to do or anything would be helpful!! I also am an equestrian and ride English and do eventing and know how to snow ski, me knowing how to do that should I easily pick up how to figure skate quicker and be more easy than if I didn’t do any of that? Just curious beings I have never did it. Any and all help is appreciated!!
@@bdndogs2877 Alright, I haven't skated in a while, but here I go. When skating, PLEASE BRING THE GEAR YOU MENTIONED. Do not fall straight forward or backward, as it is harder to catch yourself, and protect your head. Most skaters that go to indoor rinks start in crowded public sessions with most of the inexperienced or first time skaters bunched up against the walls for support. Try to give everyone just a little more space than you think they need, so if one of them or you goes down, you won't all get hurt and it will be easier for them to stop themselves from falling if they aren't scared of bumping into you. Most of the more experienced skaters are more toward the middle, as they do not need support, and are often doing jumps and spins that they learn in lessons. If you see someone skating backwards or preparing for a jump, please try not to be in the way. I think riding horses and skiing would help you a lot, even though the three are all very different. As for exercises, try working on your balance. You're going to be gliding around on a pair of KNIFE BOOTS- knife boots sounds cooler than ice skates- so maybe just practice basic things like balancing on one leg or standing on your toes (that's what I did, I didn't do many exercises.) Most of my practice was on the ice, so just try to go to the rink when you can, when you feel like it. Trying to skate when you don't want to just ruins the fun of it. P.S. I'm not great at writing, so I probably made some grammar mistakes here.

Omg! I would have guessed this is a 5 year progression! This gives me a lot of hope! (I am 13 and have been skating since february but everyone is ahead of me!) Thank you so much for the likes lol, I moved up a level recently
I don't know if you'll catch up simply because skating takes time, but don't be intimidated. Most people who skate are there to enjoy it so making friends makes skating more fun. You'll also think less about how good they are and focus on your own accomplishments (speaking from experience on both side of the fence). Keep at it though! Even if you aren't as experienced as everyone else don't let that discourage you. You'll still do amazing things in no time!
For those in the comment section starting in your teens or later: Dont feel discouraged. I started on my 13th bday and was doing doubles at 15. Havent skated since 16 and I am 37 and giving her another go. I just love it. Dont put pressure on yourself. Enjoy the process and the challenge. Its not impossible. Stand proud my friends

Honestly I don't see why everyone is going on about not having learned at an early age. I mean obviously the earlier you start the better chance you get of being good (more years of practice) but you can still be pretty good in your "later" stages of life 🤷♀️
As somebody who’s been a figure skater for 16.5 years, this reminds me a lot of myself even NOW lmao I fall for no reason Have bad skates Land things randomly Fall on my face randomly Fool around (penguin slides, yaaas) Try random stuff ALL THE TIME And in the end it reminds me why I love this sport!
I randomly landed my first flip a few weeks ago and didn't believe it. I thought it was a normal waltz jump and then I realized I jumped backwards and landed backwards 😂
@@irgendeinesarah Great job! I'm a figure skater as well and I was told I couldn't figure skate due to a medical condition, but I continued and guess what? My skating actually helped me overcome my condition, I'm not sure it actually helped, but I'm sure that it payed off.
Lots of stretching, and be paaatieeeent. Some people may take longer to gain great flexibility, and you never know where they were at when they first really started trying to get more flexible. So never measure yourself against someone else's progress. : ) So stretch a lot, but be careful and don't push yourself too hard. And don't get discouraged! You may not feel like you're making any progress, but every time you stretch and practise helps. It all adds up.
Honey, stretch everytime you can. There are a lot of videos for stretching , I personally would recommend Alivia D'Andreas videos for stretching. Ps: Please don't over work yourself, just take your time and sooner or later you'll get mor flexible.

I've been interested in skating ever since watching Yuri On Ice, I asked my dad to find a private coach for me to train under this fall. Ever since I asked my dad, I grew scared because I'm 13 and I still have no idea how to skate and I've seen a lot of people who are way younger than me who are skating, even my brother, he is only 10 and he's amazing at hockey. Now that I've seen your video, I feel a bit more confident in myself to start figure skating even though I'm very late into knowing how to skate. I just learned that no matter how old you are, you can still pursue your dreams even though your peers are years ahead of experience. I'm excited to see what you do in the future, Mina. I’m 21 and started last November and I’m starting to learn my first fully rotated jump (loop) and I’ve almost got my scratch spin together! Nothing is impossible! I never could have imagined Doing it before but I really stuck with it because it’s something I enjoy and it truly has changed my life

Oh my god the same thing happened to me but in ballet! Everyone was ahead of me but I stretched everyday and worked hard and became the best in my class 😂 it’s all about hard work
i'm 13 and have been skating since i was 6. you've been able to do more skills in 2 years than i was able to do in almost double the time! everyone has bad days but the people that get up and try again are the ones who are really resilient and have a love for the sport, which i saw in this video and your year 1 progression. i hope you continue to enjoy figure skating because it's such a beautiful thing to watch and experience!

Well i started with ice skating when I was 2 and half years old and stopped with 7 or 8 because of school...well I'm 13 now and I want to start again 😅 it's never too late even if you're already 15 or older! Just try and keep going! Sorry for my bad English ( I live in Germany hehehe)
Your dedication and “give it all you got” are super inspiring! Amazing progress! I learned to skate backwards 14 years ago at age 48, holding my 4 year old daughter’s hands. I’ve been teaching for the last 6 seasons at an outdoor rink in northern New Mexico (even though partially disabled). I’m recovering though. Thanks so much to you and your camera-person! This also inspires me to make a beginner video (I hope).

you are SO inspiring! I skated as a kid for a few years but stopped just before I was getting good enough to compete. I’ve fallen back in love with the sport as a young adult and am hoping to finally compete someday. you’ve given me hope that it’s possible. 😊

We have the same birthday and your vibe is a lot like mine. I love skating and watching you on the ice is a lot like me. Loving the skate and being a goofball at the same time. I wanted to get into figure skating when I was a lot younger and my mom refused. So now I'm older and on my own and i want to learn. Your videos are so helpful and your progress is not only AWESOME but inspirational. Don't ever change. I'm 20 but I really want to start practicing ice skating lmaooo, however I'm way too old for it and I have knee pain since I was a kid just playing ice skates for two hours already hurts my feet and my knees a lot. And plus if I really want to start practicing it damn ma the price of getting a coach is so god damn expensive😭
I got no kneww prob but I'm 20 too. And I live in India and have loved ballet and figure skating since 4 but we got no ice or coaches or even a rink or even the tremendous amount of money needed for this. By the time I'd earn enough money I'll probably be even older.

After falling once on my butt that was it I got knee pads butt pads and hand guards (when I first learned a basic spin I fell on my hand and struggled to write for a week) they are very useful for sliding on ice 😹 happy skating ❤️❤️❤️

you make me smile :) I've been trying an Axel for 4 years and I can't land it every time [10-time out of 100] TT and I always feel so bad when I see other kids get it in 4 days or few weeks. anyway we skate because we love it..... ^^
My fear of falling prevented from learning how to ride a bike at first, but I overcame it by throwing myself into it, I went down the same hill without pedalling again & again until I didn't feel like I was about to over balance :)
For me getting over my fear of falling in gymnastics and in skating what helped was just to fall over a couple of times doing things while someone was coaching, that knowledge that I would most likely be okay was what helped me do harder things

I want to get into ice skating so badly! I’m not very flexible or good at listening to directions, but I am good at memorising routines and I’m very persistent to get things done. This gives me lots of confidence, though!

Next year you will get that axel, camel spin, and layback and maybe the change foot spin....I think starting ice dancing will help you speed and transition and it is fun to go fast in the ice dancing....good luck and keep it up!! yep, it’s a salchow! you generally enter from a left outside 3-turn, and hold the back inside edge before pulling your arms and leg in to turn over your left shoulder as you jump. hope that helps haha

Darn, I was a figure skater for a few years but I gave up a while ago (bad coaches and too much pressure to do well, kind of ruined the fun.) Then I watched Yuri On Ice and I want to FUDGING GRAB MY ICE SKATES THAT ARE NOW TWO SIZES TOO SMALL AND JUST *START SPINNING*
I am thinking about starting to learn how to skate then work into learning how to figure skate. I am a male 37. Your videos are great!! Is there anything I should do or expect when getting started. Should I wear a helmet,knee pads,wrist braces, elbow pads and butt shorts or do I need some of those or any of them? Any tips Suggestions, things to do, exercises I may need to do or anything would be helpful!! I also am an equestrian and ride English and do eventing and know how to snow ski, me knowing how to do that should I easily pick up how to figure skate quicker and be more easy than if I didn’t do any of that? When skating, PLEASE BRING THE GEAR YOU MENTIONED. Do not fall straight forward or backward, as it is harder to catch yourself, and protect your head. Most skaters that go to indoor rinks start in crowded public sessions with most of the inexperienced or first time skaters bunched up against the walls for support. Try to give everyone just a little more space than you think they need, so if one of them or you goes down, you won't all get hurt and it will be easier for them to stop themselves from falling if they aren't scared of bumping into you. Most of the more experienced skaters are more toward the middle, as they do not need support, and are often doing jumps and spins that they learn in lessons. If you see someone skating backwards or preparing for a jump, please try not to be in the way.
I think riding horses and skiing would help you a lot, even though the three are all very different.
As for exercises, try working on your balance. You're going to be gliding around on a pair of KNIFE BOOTS- knife boots sounds cooler than ice skates- so maybe just practice basic things like balancing on one leg or standing on your toes (that's what I did, I didn't do many exercises.) Most of my practice was on the ice, so just try to go to the rink when you can, when you feel like it. Trying to skate when you don't want to just ruins the fun of it.

I don't know if you'll catch up simply because skating takes time, but don't be intimidated. Most people who skate are there to enjoy it so making friends makes skating more fun. You'll also think less about how good they are and focus on your own accomplishments (speaking from experience on both side of the fence). Keep at it though! Even if you aren't as experienced as everyone else don't let that discourage you. You'll still do amazing things in no time!

Havent skated since 16 and I am 37 and giving her another go. I just love it. Dont put pressure on yourself. Enjoy the process and the challenge. Its not impossible. Stand proud my friends

Honestly I don't see why everyone is going on about not having learned at an early age. I mean obviously the earlier you start the better chance you get of being good (more years of practice) but you can still be pretty good in your "later" stages of life 🤷♀️

Lots of stretching, and be paaatieeeent. Some people may take longer to gain great flexibility, and you never know where they were at when they first really started trying to get more flexible. So never measure yourself against someone else's progress. : ) So stretch a lot, but be careful and don't push yourself too hard. And don't get discouraged! You may not feel like you're making any progress, but every time you stretch and practise helps. It all adds up.

I've been interested in skating ever since watching Yuri On Ice, I asked my dad to find a private coach for me to train under this fall. Ever since I asked my dad, I grew scared because I'm 13 and I still have no idea how to skate and I've seen a lot of people who are way younger than me who are skating, even my brother, he is only 10 and he's amazing at hockey. Now that I've seen your video, I feel a bit more confident in myself to start figure skating even though I'm very late into knowing how to skate. I just learned that no matter how old you are, you can still pursue your dreams even though your peers are years ahead of experience. I'm excited to see what you do in the future, Mina. i'm 13 and have been skating since i was 6. you've been able to do more skills in 2 years than i was able to do in almost double the time! everyone has bad days but the people that get up and try again are the ones who are really resilient and have a love for the sport, which i saw in this video and your year 1 progression. i hope you continue to enjoy figure skating because it's such a beautiful thing to watch and experience!

I wanted to get into figure skating when I was a lot younger and my mom refused. So now I'm older and on my own and i want to learn. I'm 20 but I really want to start practicing ice skating lmaooo, however I'm way too old for it and I have knee pain since I was a kid just playing ice skates for two hours already hurts my feet and my knees a lot. And plus if I really want to start practicing it damn ma the price of getting a coach is so god damn expensive😭

HAHAHAHA yesss knee- and butt-pads are incredibly important! and you can just skate in your normal leggings or upgrade to skating leggings :)
After falling once on my butt that was it I got knee pads butt pads and hand guards (when I first learned a basic spin I fell on my hand and struggled to write for a week) they are very useful for sliding on ice 😹 happy skating ❤️❤️❤️

My fear of falling prevented from learning how to ride a bike at first, but I overcame it by throwing myself into it, I went down the same hill without pedalling again & again until I didn't feel like I was about to over balance :)

For me getting over my fear of falling in gymnastics and in skating what helped was just to fall over a couple of times doing things while someone was coaching, that knowledge that I would most likely be okay was what helped me do harder things
A lot of people are saying this and its kinda of an easier said than done thing but you honestly just gotta go for it, besides you'll never know if you'll land it if you never try. Since I was like- 2 my dad has always said "Don't be afraid of falling, the ground'll catch ya"

I want to get into ice skating so badly! I’m not very flexible or good at listening to directions, but I am good at memorising routines and I’m very persistent to get things done.
This gives me lots of confidence, though!
I skated for 5 years and I got pretty good. But it just got to expensive. Any ideas?

Wow, what good progress and I love how you get down low in the sit spin and hold it! Next year you will get that axel, camel spin, and layback and maybe the change foot spin....I think starting ice dancing will help you speed and transition and it is fun to go fast in the ice dancing....good luck and keep it up!! That's a salchow, I'm learning it too ！
yep, it’s a salchow! you generally enter from a left outside 3-turn, and hold the back inside edge before pulling your arms and leg in to turn over your left shoulder as you jump. hope that helps haha

In new Zealand 2 lessons a month plus full access to the rink with no charge whenever they're open is around 175 NZD a month so in America its probs like 120ish a month I guess.
