Wes Mccauley is a former referee in the NHL and he is absolutely hilarious. Wes McCauley (born January 11, 1972) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player and current National Hockey League (NHL) referee. He is the son of John McCauley, who was also an NHL referee; and his wife Irene.
A defenceman during his playing career, McCauley became a referee after injury forced his retirement from playing in 1997. He refereed his first NHL regular season game in 2003 and became a full-time NHL referee in 2005. He has worked in five consecutive Stanley Cup Finals from 2013 to 2018.

He's Canadian, but a lot of Canadian towns were settled by Irish farmers so certain parts of the accent remain in certain parts of Canada.

Like most Canadians, he's probably mixed as hell. Just Google "______ surname" and you can see any last name's origin. I did one of those ancestry tests and found out I had a little bit of Irish / Scottish / English mixed in (plus some other things) despite being told I was French / Ukrainian / Canadian growing up, which I was as well.
I live in Saint John, New Brunswick and we are said to be the most "Irish" city outside of Ireland thanks to immigration and being an east coast port city.

That's a Canadian accent that you're hearing lol. Definitely some Irish roots in there. It's especially prevalent in East Coast Canadian accents
Tecknowledgist He’s not from the Maritimes though eh, he’s from west of Toronto. His accent is pretty standard Canadian. There’s slight differences between the standard of the East and West, but neither sound like the Maritimes or Newfie. Very, _very_ distinct differences.

You probably thought he was Irish because he's from Eastern Canada where back in the day we had some Irish influence on the far east and eventually started to trickle it's way west. That's how we got our Canadian accent on top of the British influence.
I'd highly recommend looking up the Newfoundland accent it sounds like a blackout drunk Irishman after taking 10 shots to the head from Mystic Mac.

Not only entertaining, but one of the consistently good refs. Can't really think of any egregious calls (or missed calls) on his part.
He runs deep into the playoffs every year, which is really all you need to know about his talent as an on-ice official.
Preach it I love refs who can make there calls entertaining and make you laugh no matter if the call is in your favor or not

Teukka, I am subscribed to him and have been watching his videos for a good month or so now. I know it’s a joke, but he originally mispronunciationiated it originally. I’m essentially saying that it is funny.

He’s one of the more interesting referees in the league. A rule explanation: during a stop in play, the home team gets the last line change, except when they are not allowed to change for an icing. That’s what he means when he’s saying that changes are the best part of his game.

@@halo7172 A line change is when players are rotated out. Teams are normally divided into 4 forward lines (2 wingers and a center) and 3 pairs of Defensemen. (The NHL allows you to dress 20 players in a game, most teams go with 12 forwards, 6 Defensemen, and 2 goalies.) If you're a soccer fan think of the Center as your a midfielder and the wingers as forwards. Icing is when a player advances the puck to the other end of the rink when the player has not advanced to the red line in the center of the rink. In the NHL, when a team does that, they are not allowed to change the players on the ice, except in the case of injury.
EDIT: When the play is whistled dead, the visiting team has five seconds to replace their players. After those five seconds, the home team then has seven seconds to replace their players, if they choose. after that they are supposed to be lined up for the ensuing face-off in a reasonable amount of time (10 seconds or so).
@@halo7172 To continue what Phil said..if a team is charged with icing, the face-off is taken in their end. This is done to prevent teams from a) wasting time when they have a lead and maybe b) simply dumping the puck in and chasing it, thus causing the game to be less "speedy". Icing is not charged if a team has a penalty. So they are allowed to shoot the puck out of their end into the other team's end in order to "kill" a penalty.
@@halo7172 A line change is substituting players. You're only allowed 6 players at a time (5 skaters plus a goalie), and sometimes teams will accidentally have 7. This is a "too many men" penalty.
Wes is one of the very, very few refs that love their job and can do it well. The players love him, the coaches love him, the fans love him and the broadcast teams around the league love to hear his calls. He will explain, to both coach and player, his decision every time. He's an artist in the striped shirt. Thanks for the video, I watch it often.

EDIT: Just watched and yes, he's an entertainer and a lunatic but he's our lunatic. I don't think there's a fan out there who doesn't love WM. As the one announcer said, he does have a flair for the dramatics. The accent you hear is the Canadian accent. lol. There are certain words or phrases he says that you can really hear it.
JR Entertainment Steve Dangle hates him, he thinks it’s ridiculous that a ref will make a bad call and then pull this cutesy stuff. Can’t say I agree with him, but there’s at least 1 person who hates him.

So many times in sports we get mad at the refs. "We're not here to watch you!" etc. But McCauley is one of the "good ones."

Ahh yess. I don't know if there's any videos like this out there for Kerry Fraser, but he is a legend. Even till this day, after that blood disorder diagnosis he still goes hard. I believe he was one of the last referees to reluctantly wear a helmet.

Adam I'm a British hockey player, just wanted to say that I've loved seeing you react to our sport!! To give you some context.. Wes is the hockey equivalent of Pierluigi Collina aka one of the greatest ever! Not just for his calls but his character and strength on the ice too!!
I really recommend watching Peter Forsberg retirement video. That guy had it all, such a complete player! One of the best forwards ever in NHL.

Wes McCauley is among the very best officials in the NHL. He is a unique character but he's very good at his job and you can tell that he respects the players and the players respect him as well. It's fun to hear him wearing a mic. The conversation can be pretty funny with him involved.
