AFL players do have positions and roles but what they mean is that all players - regardless of position - are expected to kick, mark, tackle, run, handball etc. Different to American football which has very specific skillsets for certain roles. These guys will obviously have strengths and weaknesses but defenders can still kick goals when needed and forwards need to be able to make defensive tackles/bumps to regain possession of the ball at the attacking end.
Soccer you don't have to pay your position (a part from the goalkeeper). You play your position for tactical purposes, and because, frankly you are good at that. But nothing is stopping defender from scoring goals for example, run to the attack etc. It is not advisable as such in the sense you'll leave the defense unattended. Same principle is followed in the AFL.

The best "athletes" I've seen were basketballers but Aussie Rules is still the planet's greatest game.
