Florida fans threw plastic rats on the ice during the 1996 playoffs after Panthers captain Scott Melanby killed a rat in the dressing room prior to a game.
That’s right
11:52 Bill Barilko wins the Stanley Cup for the Toronto Maple Leafs in OT in 1951.
This is significant because that summer, Barilko would die in a plane crash whilst on a fishing trip in Northern Ontario.
The Leafs wouldn't win the Cup again until 1962, the year the plane wreckage was discovered.
It's immortalized in a song by The Tragically Hip called "50 Mission Cap". It contains the lyric:

The last goal he ever scored won the Leafs the Cup
They wouldn't win another til 1962
The year he was discovered.

That "old-timey" goal by Barilko was his last goal before he disappeared in a plane crash in 1951. It won the Stanley Cup for the Leafs...who didn't win another Cup until his body was discovered 11 years later.
The Tragically Hip song "50 Mission Cap" tells the story of the Barilko curse.

The Legend of Bill Barilko and The Toronto Maple Leafs:
Bill Barilko scored the overtime winning goal for the TML in 1951 to win Lord Stanley's Trophy. That summer while on a fishing trip he disappeared in thr Canadian wilderness. The Leafs (in an era where there were only 6 teams in the league dominated by Montreal and Toronto) didn't win the Stanley Cup again until 1962, the same year Bill Barilko's body was discovered.
The story became legend within the Toronto Maple Leafs organization and fan base and would later become immortalized in Canadian culture when THE Canadian Rock group The Tragically Hip wrote a song which incorporated the story from the back of a hockey card in their song 50 Mission Cap.

As a devil's fan, Stevens was awesome. 99% of his hits were clean and had very low penilty minutes in his career. Has just built like a fucking mountain and hit as hard as a truck.

Many would be charging, hitting an unsuspecting/vulnerable player, interference (due to how late they are by today's standard), or (and this is the most likely, as evidenced by the Kariya hit) principle point of contact being the head. He changed the rules because of how well he exposed these vulnerabilities. Man could he line people up.
The Bobby Orr goal is very memorable. That goal won the bruins the Stanley cup, they later made a statute at the TD garden of the dive he did
The best thing is listening to an interview with Bobby Orr he doesn't understand the excitement about the "dive". He even says he didn't dive, he just lost his balance and couldn't bring his back foot down. If you watch the video of that goal you will see his back foot being held up by the stick of another player. No dive, just a fall. But I guess that doesn't make good history.

"5th overtime" In the regular season, there's a 5 minute OT period then shoot-outs. In the play-offs, overtime is played in regular 20 minutes periods with sudden death rule: first to score wins. The goal in the 5th overtime [period] means they played more than 2 games worth of play-offs hockey that night.

In playoffs they play as long as someone makes a goal in overtime. 1ot is 20min long so if you are in 5th ot you have already played like 140min..crazy
Once a playoff hockey game here in Norway lasted for like 4 hours of play time
The longest overtime in history happened way back in 1936. It went into the 6th overtime period. By that point, you now played 9 X 20min periods. Essentially 3 games of hockey in a row.

Specificall it was Scott Mellanby, and he scored 2 Goals contributing to Florida winning the game that night. It's been a tradition ever since.
Yeah if remember right Scott Mellanby killed rat with stick on locker room before game and scored 2 goals on the game with same stick.
Mellanby killed a rat in the locker room before the game and then went out and scored 2 goals and the Goalie Vanbiesbrouck dubbed it the rat trick. This also took place in 96 which was the Chinese year of the rat.

The Guy Laflure goal by Montreal Canadiens where the goalie Falls backwards it was a power-play goal where the Boston Bruins got a penalty for Too Many Men on the ice allowing Guy to tie the game in the last seconds. Montreal went on to win the game in overtime beating Boston and going on to the Stanley Cup finals where they won the fourth cup in the row.
This was at a time where Boston was one of the best teams in the league and Montreal was the best team in the history of hockey. But were seconds away from being eliminated by Boston for the first time in decades... The history of the two teams is one of the greatest rivalries in all of sport. The hatred between these two teams is unrivaled
And Don Cherry basically got fired because of it shortly after and never sniffed a Cup again.
Bobby Orrs goal for Boston was Stanley cup final overtime he scored to win it and he flew it’s probably the most memorable goal in the history of the game

The game that went into a 5th overtime in the playoffs was insane. They played almost 3 hours of hockey, which is nearly 2 and a half games in a night. By the 2nd and 3rd overtimes, guys stop skating hard and every play in the zone is intense. Energy levels are completely drained and they're leaving the building past 1am.
I was at the game when Alec Martinez scored the game winning goal in double overtime ... and the L.A. Kings won our 2nd Stanley Cup! It was the most exciting night of my life !!!
The Penguin’s goal by Lemieux was in game 2 of the 1991 Stanley cup finals. The first Stanley cup the Penguins were ever in.

"Raining rats"
Story goes a Florida Panthers player found a rat in the dressing room and killed it with his stick before a game. He went on to score a hat trick (3 goals) with that stick. Throwing rubber rats on the ice became a good luck tradition for that team. It became so popular that the league had to step in and stop it as it was delaying the game, when thousands of rubber rats would hit the ice every time the Panthers scored.
It was also the season where the Panthers made the finals
Anaheim Ducks: Paul Kariya goal in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final to force game 7
Arizona Coyote: OVERTIME GOAL in Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals
Boston Bruins: Bobby Orr wins the 1970 Stanley Cup against the Blues
Buffalo Sabres: The Sabres finally beat the Boston Bruins in a sweep with the Mayday goal.
Calgary Flames: This goal help them get past Edmonton in the 1989 Western Conference semifinals and they went on to win the Stanley Cup.
Carolina Hurricanes: Overtime Game 7 of the 2009 Eastern Conference Semifinals
Chicago Blackhawks: That goal won the Blackhawks their first Stanley Cup since 1961
Colorado Avalanche: Uwe Krupp's goal gave this team their first-ever Stanley Cup and Patrick Roy had a 64-save shutout in that game 4.
Columbus Blue Jackets: That goal basically put the team on the map
Dallas Stars (my team): That goal basically gave the Stars their first-ever Stanley Cup in Game 6 of the 1999 Stanley Cup Final. Minnesota fans, you can now cry.
Detroit Redwings: This goal happen in game 7 of the 1997 Western Conference semifinals against the Blues. This also was the moment that Steve Yzerman stripped himself of the choker label.
Edmonton Oilers: Nothing to see here. Just Wayne Gretzky walking on Calgary's courts in the mid-80s
Florida Panthers: It used to be a tradition for them just throw rats on the ice. This was when the Florida Panthers were actually relevant in the mid-90s.
LA Kings: Alec Martinez's goal gave the Kings their second Stanley Cup in 3 years.
Minnesota Wild: That overtime goal upset kick-started the Wild's run to the 2003 Western Conference Final.
Montreal: In 1979, Boston had too many men on the ice.
Nashville Predators: Kevin Fiala's Game 3 goal against the Chicago Blackhawks was all the momentum they need to sweep the top seed in the West in the 2017 Western Conference first-round. That was one of the few goals you actually missed.
New Jersey Devils: Jason Arnott's goal gave the Devils their second Stanley Cup.
NY Islanders: That goal came in overtime in Game 6 of the 1980 Stanley Cup Final and it was the first of four straight Stanley Cups.
NY Rangers: This goal propelled the Rangers to the 1994 Stanley Cup Final where they would beat the Vancouver Canucks in seven games to when they're first cup in 54 years. The 1940 chants will rest in peace.
Ottawa Senators: That goal defeated the Sabres in five games in the 2007 Eastern Conference Final.
Philadelphia Flyers: After 5 overtimes of non-stop action, Primeau's goal ended the game and was a turning point in that series.
Pittsburgh Penguins: Mario Lemieux made himself an NHL legend with that goal in Game 1 against the Minnesota North Stars and the Pens went on to win the Stanley Cup in six games
San Jose Sharks: This was another overtime game 7 goal and it propelled the Sharks to the 1995 Western Conference Semifinals.
St Louis Blues: This was a controversial goal that led to the blues sweeping the Chicago Blackhawks and Ed Belfour, the Blackhawks goaltender, was pissed.
Tampa Bay Lightning: Thanks to the PHANTOM GOAL, Martin St Louis was able to get the puck past, the Flames goaltender, Kiprusoff and horse head game 7 in the 2004 Stanley Cup, which they won and claimed their first-ever Stanley Cup. That was another goal you missed.
Toronto Maple Leafs: 1967, the last time this team ever won a Stanley Cup. And this was also the last year of the Original Six era, as 6 new expansion teams would be added the NHL, the year after the Maple Leafs won the Cup.
Vancouver Canucks: Pavel Bure's amazing stickhandling in overtime Game 7 against the Calgary Flames in the 1994 Western Conference first-round propelled the team to the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals.
Vegas Golden Knights: In the inaugural season of the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 season, new starting forward, William Karlsson, capped off an over 40-goal season with a spectacular goal against Sharks goaltender, Martin Jones. This goal not only gave him the win that night, but also clinched the Pacific Division title, one of the few expansion teams to ever clinch the division title in their inaugural season.
Washington Capitals: I think you already know about this one. Although, I think of Evgeny Kuznetsov goal against the Penguins in Game 6 of the 2018 Eastern Conference Semifinals or the Devante Smith-Pelly goal against Vegas in game 5 of the 2018 Stanley Cup Finals should have been there.
Winnipeg Jets: That what's Teemu Selanne, one of the most lethal goal scorers in NHL history. Also known as to Finnish Flash, he shattered the rookie goal scoring record that year with this goal made famous famous for his sniper gun celebration. And that was the fourth and last goal you missed.
That's why each goal from each team is so memorable.

The Matteau goal for the Rangers was a miracle goal for the miracle year, the Rangers had not won a cup since 1940 and it was thought they were cursed. Every year if they were even lucky enough to make it to the playoffs, they were blown out. Finally in 1994 they had a shot, they were slowly getting to the top until they reached the semis. They were playing the New Jersey Devils and made it to game 7, Rangers captain, Mark Messier promised New Yorkers and Rangers fans across the country that... "We will win tonight" That quote was in big letters on the front page of every newspaper in New York. That night it was a tie game and was now in overtime, Stephan Matteau was a recently acquired Rangers trade and was traded for a well loved and very skilled player, so naturally Matteau had to earn his respect. That night in the locker room he was alone with Ed Olczyk before they took the ice for OT, Matteau told Eddie that he was gonna win this game and for good luck Eddie kissed the blade of his stick, then only moments later Matteau scored, bringing the Rangers to the Stanley Cup finals for the first time since 1940 and they would go on to win the Stanley cup.

Matteau,Matteau,Matteau!! A lot of context behind that goal. It was 1994, the last Rangers Stanley Cup was 1940. A few years leading up to 94 they had really great teams that fell way to short in the playoffs. They were the best team in 92. That series with the Devils was insane. The Rangers found themselves down 3 games to 2 heading into Jersey for game 6. The day before Mark Messier in the papers Guaranteed victory. They ended up down 2-0 and the season and cup run was about to be over then in the 3rd period Messier scores a hat trick and the Rangers brought the series back to New York. One reason for it being the teams most memorable goal was the radio call by Howie Rose, one of the best calls ever. After the goal there was this huge amount of tension that was released by the team and fans. I could add more but, getting to long.
It was Mattheu's second 2 OT game winner of the series. Nothing like beating your arch rivals in 2 OT in Game 7 to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1979.
I’m on a Adam Couser binge. In terms of the helmets we still chuckle about how nuts these guys were. The game has a history though of being pretty violent. But also, pucks weren’t really raised off the ice too often until Stan Mikita/Bobby Hull started curving sticks for the Blackhawks. The goalies were crazier, games were routinely delayed for the goalie to get stitched up and to return as teams only had 1 goalie.
Agreed Commentators do help in us feeling the emotion. The Arnott goal for the NJ Devils was the game winning double overtime goal to win the Cup in 2000
The Islanders goal from Bobby Nystrom at 9:15 started what is considered to be one of the greatest dynasties in sports history. 3 division titles, 3 conference titles, 4 straight Stanley Cups and 19 consecutive playoff series wins. I don’t think any other team in any league could beat 19 straight playoff series wins. Plus, 5 players from that team are inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. I am truly proud of my team!

I appreciate you even more after watching alot of other TH-camrs that react too hockey alot them seem to lack common sense on how hard hockey really is compared to other sports. Sabres fan here. The "Mayday" goal was scored by Brad May, who was not a scorer...he was a fighter. An "enforcer" if you will. He beat one of the Boston Defenders that is considered to be one of the best Defenders of all time. Also, I have said on other videos of yours, if you love commentary, listen to the best of Rick Jeanneret, the Buffalo Sabres announcer. He is amazing. Also, bonus explanation, the Dallas Stars most famous goal is INFAMOUS in Buffalo, because at that time, the player who scored could not have his foot in the crease...Brett Hull clearly did, and they let the goal count. And I know some Dallas fan will come in saying, "tHeY cHanGeD ThE rUlE mId-SeaSon." Knock it off...no one knew that at the time. The goal should have never counted, and the game should have continued. Call me a salty Sabres fan all you want, I dont care. No Goal. Anyway, love your Vids Adam!

That's because unless you're from Ottawa or you're a parent/family member of a player on the team, no one gives a rats arse about the Sens (and yes, this opinion has been stated with a shitload of bias as a diehard Leafs fan and lifelong resident of the Greater Toronto Area despite how shitty they seem to play after the first 2 or 3 months of every season)
7:11 During that 1995-96 season, in one game, a rat had found its way to the Panthers dressing room and they chased it everywhere until Scott Mellanby killed it with a whack of his stick. Since that game, the rats became a tradition in Florida and everytime the Panthers scored a goal on home ice, the ice was littered with plastic rats.
Also the old time goal at the end is big bad Bill. A man immortalized in in the great great “50 mission cap” by the Tragically Hip. Both the man and the band are Canadian National Treasures. Enjoy the ‘Hip’ if you’re not familiar with them.

About that one clip for the Toronto Maple Leafs, that was the overtime winning goal by Bill Barilko to win them the Stanley Cup in 1951. It would turn out to be Barilko's last goal, as during that summer, he disappeared in a plane crash on his way back from a fishing trip. It would take until 1962 for the Leafs to win another Cup, which happened to be around the time the remains of the wreckage were discovered in the northern Ontario wilderness.

Adam, im sure someone already answered but, in the nhl, and some other leagues, during the playoffs if the game is tied at the end of regulation (3rd period) then the game will continue with overtime periods until someone scores to win. Usually its in the 1st or 2nd overtime period but ive seen them go 3+. I live in a city with a minor league team of the detroit red wings (nhl team) and a couple of years ago during their playoffs my hometown team lost games 1, 2 and 3 of the best of 7 playoff series. Came back to win games 4, 5 and 6 to force a game 7 at home. I went, it was packed/sold out and the game was 0-0 until the 3rd overtime when we lost. It was a heartbreaker.

Most of the goals are playoff goals, which is why they are so memorable. Also some great announcer moments.
Most of these are playoff overtime goals, many of them won series allowing the team to advance to the next round. The Bobby Orr (Boston), Patrick Kane (Chicago), Uwe Krupp (Colorado), Brett Hull (Dallas), Alec Martinez (Los Angeles), Jason Arnott (New Jersey), John Tonelli (New York Islanders), Bill Barillko (Toronto) goals all won the Stanley Cup in overtime.
In terms of the 5th overtime, in the playoffs teams play overtime until someone scores, there are no ties. For that particular goal, it was the longest game in about 40 years.

Theo Fleury who scored the goal for Calgary against Edmonton at the 4:36 minute mark of the video did that in the 1991 Stanley Cup playoffs. He was also Metis and played one season with the Belfast Giants. He was small but awesome. Scott Stevens, who I liked along with Denis Poitvin also a D, was a tough nut who liked to hunt bears with a bow & arrow. Denis Poitvin used to like looking for fights, off the ice as well as on. Players were physically afraid of him. Big or small these guys played with an edge.

5:07 as a Flyers fan, this was a tough one, but that goal gave the Hawks a Stanley Cup win in overtime.
The context for the Minnesota goal (the "Christmas/nutcracker" team) is that they were down 3-0 in the series, came back to tie the series 3-3, then win the 7th game with that goal. They also did the same thing to Vancouver during that playoff run before losing to Anaheim in the Conference Finals.
In fact they came back both times(against Colorado and Vancouver) from a 3-1 series deficit.

The Carolina Hurricanes Scott Walker goal: In the game before, a Boston Bruin's player, who had been picking fights and playing dirty, was punched in the face by Hurricanes Scott Walker. The Bruins freaked out and tried to get Walker suspended, (even though the Bruins then and now did stuff like that all the time). It didn't work, and Walker scored the game winning goal. The Hurricanes won the series, and went on to win the Cup that year.

@Adam, 5th Overtime is short hand for 5th period of Overtime. In the NHL playoffs a game that ends in a tie in regulation, goes into continuous periods of sudden death overtime until someone scores for the win. 5th overtime means that game went into the 8th period counting the 3 periods of regulation time, in other words, it was a FREAKING LONG GAME! Probably started around 7pm and ended well after midnight.
The Toronto goal was scored by Bill Barilko. It was his last goal as he was killed that summer on a fishing trip. His story is immortalized in the song "Fifty Mission Cap" by The Tragically Hip. It's worth a listen.
About the nets, I saw you replied to someone who said the nets never changed sizes. It's true but they've changed the design of the nets and the goalies crease size countless times. 1880's to now, it's much different. Plus the size of players and their equipment also helps make nets look smaller.
Also the way they play, back in the 1800 to late 1990's they were playing "stand up" goalie, they rarely went down. Didn't go in butterfly often, the older clips theyre standing way out of the crease so that also makes the net look bigger since they aren't even near it

Don't wanna read through all the comments to see if this was mentioned, the Red Wings scoring against the Blues, the Wings hadn't won a Stanley Cup in 42 years, this was game 7 against St. Louis in 2nd overtime, and they advanced in the playoffs. Captain Steve Yzerman that scored this goal was brutally injured, taping up his knee that every doctor told him he couldn't play on, and it was being ground down into "sawdust" as they described. He was basically playing on a broken leg all playoffs, his heart is bigger than an aircraft carrier and he refused to not play, they caught him on camera at least a dozen times per game wincing in pain and limping off the ice. Unfortunately they didn't win the cup, but the next two seasons, they won back to back championships.

The older masks (70's & before) impaired the goalies vision more - the modern ones are pretty optimized for protect and serve the eyesight. The key change was to go for the grid masks to maximize vision without endangering the face (too much). Some grid shapes allow the puck to squeeze into the eye socket - which is not good of course. But even in those cases there's just one possible angle it can come in. I actually don't know if any masks now used are 100% sure. Another thing people sometimes don't think is the neck also needs protection, so they developed pieces that dangle below the chin, now I think they just have the chin piece reaching very low, and a type of collar has also been used - lying on the ice it's not nice to get a skate slicing a wound.

The Bobby Orr goal is the most memorable goal in NHL history in my opinion, it's been immortalized everywhere... Bobby Orr was an excellent player, above everyone else -- the McDavid of his day, and everyone in the league knew it, so he was a target for that reason. His knees gave out, he didn't play many years in the league, and this was the goal that won the Bruins their first Stanley Cup since 1941. That goal was the winner. It's simply referred to by Bruins fans as "The Goal".
The Chicago goal was also a stanley cup winner, and the guy who scored it was the only one who knew it was in the net, because he had the angle to see it trapped in the net hidden, which is why if you watch the whole clip, everyone is confused, while the goal scorer is celebrating.
The skate in the crease was Brett Hull, the rule in that year was if any part of your skate was in the crease and you scored, the goal would be disallowed. This was a triple overtime goal, that won the stanley cup.

The Bob Barilko cup winning goal goal was in the 40s (edit: The actual goal was in the 50s, but my comment about 40s was meant to say he played for them in the 40s). Back then, helmets weren't required equipment -- sticks were flat, and it was far more difficult to elevate pucks up to the head area of another player. When helmets became required kit for players, it was grandfathered in so players who started when it wasn't required, were not required to wear one. This is why you see Guy Lafleur without a helmet and he continued to play after the rule came in. Likewise, in the 00s a rule was put in place where a visor was required, also grandfathered in, which is why you see some players today still playing who don't have shields. Grandfathered.

The goal at 9:18 was by Bobby Nystrom from the New York Islanders in the 1979-1980 season. It was the goal that won the Islanders their first of 4 consecutive Stanley Cups.
The context you need for the Gretzky goal is that it was in overtime of what would be the final game in the playoff series between Edmonton and Calgary (who genuinely hate each other more than any rivalry in the league), and Oiler star Mark Messier was called for a penalty (you can see him standing up to watch Gretzky in the highlight) and shorthanded, Gretzky slams it right in that tiny space that exists between your fist and your shoulder because the muscle on your arm prevents your elbow from bending any further. Edmonton would go on to win the cup with what are still the NHL record fewest losses in a Stanley cup campaign (16 wins, including sweeping Calgary there 4-0, and only 2 losses.)

Anaheim - This was during the Stanley Cup Final. After the big hit on Paul Kariya, many didn't think he'd return to the game. He came back only 4 1/2 minutes later in the game. He scored a goal that same game. This would be his penultimate game with the Ducks leaving the team with a franchise high 300 goals, 369 assists, and 669 points.
Arizona - Overtime game winner during the 2012 Western Conference Semi Final in Game 1. It marks the first time they won a game in the second round of the playoffs.
Boston - From the 1970 Stanley Cup Final, nicknamed "The Flight". It marks the Bruin's first Stanley Cup in 29 years. The name is given because of Orr being in the air as the goal is scored (he was tripped at the same time)
Buffalo - Brad May scores the game winning goal to sweep the Bruins in the first round of the 1993 playoffs marking the first time the Sabres won a series in 10 years. It was also a huge upset as the Bruins were the #1 seed in the East.
Calgary - Overtime winner in game 6 of the 1991 playoffs. Fleury's first of the series. This was more known for Theoren Fleury sliding down the ice after the goal.

San Jose - 1995 Western Conference Quarter Final. Ray Whitney scores the game winner in double overtime to eliminate the #2 seeded Flames.
St. Louis - 1993 Western Conference Quarter Final. Craig Janney scores the overtime winner. The goaltender, Ed Belfour, disputed the call saying he was interfered with. He was outside of the crease, so the refs ruled the collision incidental contact, which by the rules means the goal is legal. The goal stood, and Belfour went on a rampage in the locker room breaking a hot tub, coffee maker, and a television.
Tampa Bay (not shown) - Martin St. Louis scores the game winner in game 6 of the 2004 Stanley Cup Final to bring the series back to Tampa Bay. Lightning won the Cup.
Toronto - 1951 Stanley Cup Final. Game winner in overtime by Bill Barilko to win the Stanley Cup. Sadly, this would be his last game as Barilko disappeared that same year in a plane crash that was not discovered until 1962.
