I'm from Montreal. In 2011, I was in my last year in highschool and we went on a school trip in Boston during the playoff against them. I remember my teachers telling us not to say any comments in public the series cause they did not wanted any trouble
I got to see a bruins game cause of a tournament and man it gets heated
About that time Montrealers flooded police lines after the Chara on Pacioretty hit... people tend to forget Boston called the cops on Maurice Richard in 1953 for a much less worse incident. And the cops actually showed up at The Garden to arrest him, but they were denied entry to the locker room by Maurice's teammates.

You realize, I suppose, hockey players don't have the ability to prevent a police entrance to an area, right? If it comes for it the police just keep calling more officers until they get in if they want in.

The Montreal Canadiens Hockey Club was founded in 1909 and is the oldest hockey team, not just in the NHL, but in the World! They've won more Lord Stanley's Cup than any other teams with a total of 24... so far 😉 and also have the most players inducted in the Hockey Hall of Fame than any other team! Maurice "Rocket" Richard is the first player to score more than 300 goals in his career, and was also the first player to EVER score 50 goals in 50 match! That's why the trophy for the player who scored the most goals in a season receives the Maurice Richard Trophy! The Vézina Trophy is given to the best goaltender in the league, and was named in honour of George Vézina, the first goaltender to ever record 10 shoutout in a season (a game where the rival team couldn't score)

An exaggeration. Being a hockey player doesn't actually permit interfering with police in the course of their duties. Even from a practical perspective all the police would do is continue to have more officers show up until all of those blocking them from doing their duty were arrested as well as the person they were there to arrest.
The Montrèal Canadiens are older as a club than the NHL is a league, by a full 8 years.
We've been there since the very beginning.
Our rivalry with the Toronto Maple Leafs is the stuff of legend. So much that a children's book was based around it: The Hockey Sweater by Roch Carrier.

Also the Bruins were getting their asses kicked by Montreal in the 1980s and even though they got past them a few times, Boston never won a cup in the '80s, mostly due to certain dynasties in Edmonton and in Long Island, along with the occasional run-ins from Buffalo and Montreal. Meanwhile the Montreal Canadiens, with a goaltender by the name of Patrick Roy, went on to win in two of their next three Stanley Cup appearances in the '80s and '90s, in 1986 and 1993.
Montreal hasn't won the Stanley Cup since 1993. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
I have seen Montreal win 6 championships, last one in 1993, what is making me excited is that my boys, 23 & 14, have followed in my footsteps cheering for “ The Habs”, but have never seen them win the big one. They are 5 wins away. Can’t think of a better memory than watching them win with my boys at my side.

You mentioned how much has changed with the equipment and helmets, etc. The changes in skates and sticks are unbelievable. The wood sticks from the 70’s and older had some serious weight to them. The 80s and 90s had lighter wood and an aluminum phase, but the composite sticks of the past 15 years or so are light as a feather, literally. It’s been a huge contributor to the speed and skill of todays game.
Anyway, my point is that so much has changed, but most of the classic old uniforms have not. Both teams are wearing the same design with only minor changes since the 40’s. Talk about tradition.
Just discovered your channel, love the NHL content as a hockey fan myself. Another rivalry between not original 6 teams is the battle of Alberta. Calgary vs Edmonton, had the privilege of seeing them play each other a few times and they can heated on and off the ice, not to mention the fan rivalry.

The two teams also had multiple playoff series in between those huge moments but they aren't talked about in this episode but the most notable one was the 2014 Eastern Conference semifinals matchup. The Bruins were the president's trophy winners as the best team in the NHL heading into a matchup with the Canadiens, but Montreal beat them in Game 7 on the way to the Eastern Conference Finals where they lost to the New York Rangers in six games.

In Hockey's infancy I'm sure it was a relegated to regions where there was lots of snow and ice. Because that was where youngsters kid could honed the skating and other skills needed to play this game. So it never really gained national prominence until recently. Today there are teams in Arizona, Florida and the Carolina's. (similar to Russians, Swedes, Finns etc.. (northern Europeans play hockey, where of course Greeks, Italians and Spaniards probably don't) Most people who live in these parts of the country have probably never played Hockey themselves. Hockey in Canada is literally a religion. I have had Canadian coworkers remark how it is a great source of pride for them. Canada is beautiful and rugged place and its people are too. Hockey is kind of an expression of how tough and resilient they are. They take particular delight in beating the US, as Mexico does in beating us at soccer. As an American I kinda like that they can put us in our place on the ice and on the soccer pitch. The passion is real. 😛😛😛😛😛
The physicality of pro hockey really took me by surprise. It’s an exciting, yet gruelling sport! I really am excited to watch my first game inside a rink, the atmosphere looks like a lot of fun
The original cup is that little bowl-like part at the very top. Over time, the rings under it have been added in order to have room to add the names of winning teams, until it has reached it's present size. It is, after all, over 100 years old!! Another interesting fact is that Montreal is the ONLY team in all of NHL history to win 5 Stanley Cups in a row, and they did it twice!! Once in the '50's and once in the '70's.

@@kabirconsiders Never a problem. I'm from the Montreal area, hockey is REALLY big in Canada. I got to see the four in a row in the 70's (For some reason I keep thinking they won 6 in a row in the 70' but they only did it in the 50's. Sorry about that.). One of those seasons in the 70's, Montreal's record at the end of the season was 60 Wins 8 Losses and 12 Ties. This was before the NHL started OT / Shootouts in regular season play. And yes, Montreal as a rule do not like the Bruins very much. And both of their best players (Bobby Orr AND Phil Esposito) were CANADIAN!!!
If you're going to do sports rivalries, you absolutely need to look at the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees rivalry. Easily the most famous rivalry in the us
About that hit by Chara on Pacioretty, the body contact/hit itself was not what caused the injury but when his neck collided with the stanchion. The Bell Centre in Montreal was one of few arenas that still had tempered glass - it was quickly updated, as well as the other remaining arenas, for the next season with new acrylic glass that would absorb some of the energy from the hit. Chara is not a particularly dirty player, just imposing as he stands at 6 feet 9 inches tall. However, I am not trying to absolve him of blame as he could have been more aware the stanchion was there. Luckily, Pacioretty made a full recovery and is currently playing for the Vegas Golden Knights, and most recently lost a playoff series to, ironically, his former team in Montreal.

No helmets, but players observed keeping their sticks down. Once helmets and facemasks arrived, the stick work really increased.

Wow two things i noticed. 1: that goal you mentioned when Bobby Orr came streaking by and dives became one of the most famous hockey photographs of all time. There's a statue in Boston of Bobby Orr in that pose!. And second when you mentioned how taking a gamble on an unknown player can sometimes pay out big... Yes Ken Dryen became one of the best goaltenders of all time and is a Hall of famer 😁 good on ya mate👍
And Ken Dryden, the unproven goalie in the '79 playoff series, went to the hall of fame

1:33 hockey is massive in Finland, Sweden, Russia, and the Czech Republic. But it doesn't seem to have gained much traction in the rest of Europe. It has a bit of a fan base in Germany...
Yeah it’s definitely more popular in mainland Europe than the U.K.
Germany and Switzerland have high attendances in Europe. The NLA and DEL have higher averages than Sweden and Finland. Germany is getting back to producing top players in draft every year. UK and France it is growing. Norway, Hungary Latvia Belarus all growing and popular.
Don't forget Leon Draisaitl is German he's one of the best hockey players today Awsome player.
I haven't read all the comments so maybe someone beat me to it, but what you refer to as "top bin" in football (soccer) is called a "top shelf" goal in hockey. Or you'll even hear the phrase "he roofed it". 🏒😉👍

Going into those two legendary barns to play back then would’ve been so crazy. The old mtl forum would’ve been so intimidating with all those banners in the rafters. Then the Boston garden which still to this day is the hardest place to play. Crazy.

Considering the history of the Stanley Cup I am a bit surprised that it's not more popular in England. I mean, it was a British Lord who commissioned and donated the cup.

Consider the 1980 Olympic Hockey game dubbed the “Miracle on Ice”. Soviet Union vs USA for the Gold Medal. Great story behind that one. Keep em coming mate!

I was an 18-year-old die-hard Bruins fan when they finally beat the Canadiens in a playoff series, in Montreal no less. Despite losing later in the 1988 playoffs, that quarterfinals victory was more satisfying to me than winning the Stanley Cup in 2011.
BTW, as I type this, the guy who suffered the broken neck in 2011, Max Pacioretty, is playing in the Stanley Cup semifinals. Ironically, he's playing for the Vegas Golden Knights against his former team, Montreal.

You are right the Stanley Cup is the best trophy in sports. Very iconic. Winning players and staff get their names engraved on the cup for eternity. Winning players each get a day with the cup in the off season too do what they wish. Cup has been every where strip clubs bars cottages every where. Even was left on the side of a road one time when a player had a flat tire and took it out of the trunk too get the spare and forgot it there. That trophy is our royal family. Great video dude. Hockey is pretty much the only sport I can go and just watch. It keeps you involved the whole time and can go so fast. Such a great time!
I've been a Bruins fan for as long as I can remember and I always hated Montreal, a bit weird considering I live there.
One reason I love the Bruins is because of how they play, one aspect of the rivalry that makes it fun is their styles clashed as much as the culture. The Bruins are big and play a borderline physical and aggressive style while the Canadiens are smaller and way speedier.
Also, here's something fun. Due to covid they changed up the conferences, so the Bruins and Canadiens were in opposing conferences. My B's got wiped out in the 2nd round, but Montreal is close to going to the final. Part of me wishes my B's moved on and we could get a Cup Final with these teams, probably the last time it would've happened. But we can't always get what we want.

I suggest checking out some of the great NFL rivalries also. From long time rivals like the Bears and Packers to more recent ones like the Seahawks and 49ers. Some of those are absolutely crazy.

I'd say, short of the Richard Zednik/Clint Malarcuk skates to the neck, the Chara hit to Pacioretty was probably the scariest injury I've seen in hockey, visually speaking. But, although Pacioretty suffered a fractured vertebrae in his neck and a severe concussion, but he recovered fully and is currently playing for the Vegas Golden Knights (who, ironically, are playing Montreal in the playoffs now)

Though Montreal isn't the most talented team in the current Playoffs, the Canadiens are on the cusp of going to The Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1993 because they're dogs with an immense amount of fight in them. Carey Price, one of the best goalies in the League, is a man on a mission: HE WANTS HIS NAME ON THE CUP. NOW. The whole team has also been playing with absolute belief that they can win it all, full commitment to team Defense, grit, heart, character, tactical scoring, etc. They were counted out in every Round, but they refused to die and now, the stars have aligned for them: today is Saint Jean Baptiste Day in Quebec and Game 6 is in Montreal. The Canadiens lead the series against the Vegas Golden Knights 3-2.

I was at that 7th game in '79. Pissed me off because I was cheering for Boston. I'm actually a Detroit Red Wings fan, but at that time the Wings were in the midst of their Dead Things decades.
Just a reminder that the sticks, and thus the puck speed, and direction were different then. No curve on the stick. Helmet were needed as the pucks were leaving the ice, and comming in higher and faster.

You should checkout the Battle of Alberta, it’s another legendary hockey rivalry, Calgary and Edmonton are 3 hours apart in the province of Alberta and that’s made the Flames vs Oilers bitter rivals since the teams first entered the league
You should dig deeper into the Montreal Canadiens history! They are the oldest team in the league and won the most Stanley cups! Over 110 years of history!

Hi Kamir, I have written to you before, but never revealed I live in Boston. That dive you were referring to was Bobby Orr, perhaps the greatest Bruin ever. That dive is known as "the goal", as that was the goal that won the Bruins the Stanley Cup that year. Bobby Orr is so revered here, there is a statue of Bobby in that dive outside of the Garden today. You can probably google it and see it.

You got to remember, hockey is one of the most dangerous, if not the most dangerous team sport. Guys skating at 10-20 mph and they weigh average 201lbs and about 6'1". So the hits are very hard.
As a young boy watching the Montreal Canadien, the best rivalry was not Boston or Toronto. These were teams to go to the next step. The worst and most epic rivalry was the former Quebec Nordiques, period. Even if they never won the Stanley Cup, they were the team Montreal didn’t want to lose to. Just watch the video about ‘The good Friday massacre’. I watch it live and there was nothing like it before or after. The NHL was forced to make new rules to avoid that situation to ever happen again..

Then there's the 1980s Edmonton Oilers will Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Grant Fuhr. The mid 1990s Detroit Red Wings with their Russian players, there is just so many amazing players and teams and games in hockey. It's beautiful and it's brutal. It's perfect.

saturday night was hochey night when i was a kid...it was SACRED...period...only 1 tv in the house...i was the last of 5 kids...and hated it !!!...now...i adore the sport..!!... my 2 brothers..played well..my older brother...was really good...won so many trophees.. it was good time..

Just a little fun fact here; Chara is one of the tallest, if not they tallest NHL players at about 6foot 6inches tall. He was a big guy,and pretty fast at the time too.

You said the Stanley Cup is the greatest trophy in sports. There are all kinds of crazy stories about Stanley Cup winning teams and their celebrations with it, throughout history. I have heard the a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins jumped of the roof, and landed in the pool with it, at a party at Mario Lemieux's house after their first Cup Championship. My favorite team, the Washington Capitals invented the Cup stands as a creative way to drink out of it. Cup stands were also banned after that summer!!! There are dozens of other stories, you could probably look them up, and react to them.

That Maurice Richard Goal where he had the bandage he had actually been knocked out by a stick above the eye that busted him up. He got stitched up went back to the bench jumped back on the ice when he could found the puck behind his net and through bloody and blurred vision managed to deke three bruins and the bruin goaltender to score the goal
Or that time Maurice moved furnitures to a new apartment all snowy day long and went on to score 5 goals and 3 assists the very same night. Stuff of legend.
The funny part of the "brawl in the hall"??? Montreal's Chris Nilan grew up in Boston and was a Bruins fan and idolized 70's stars Orr, Esposito, Hodge etc. As for the hit on Max Pacioretty, Chara is 6'9" tall. Max isn't a small guy either at 6'2". It just happened that when Chara hit him, it was where the glass ends along the wall where the bench is. Pacioretty was driven into the end stanchion. Montreal's fans all believed Chara's hit was intention to drive Pachioretty into said stanchion hence their calls to Canadian police for a criminal investigation. Yes, CHara intended to hit him but, no there was no criminal intent to ram him into a specific spot to inflict a serious injury. The game is played at very high speed and crazy stuff happens. Since then the glass is now curved inward at those areas to help player protection
You should react to college football game winners. Very fun to watch and see how everyone goes crazy.

Wow, I had heard a lot about this rivalry, but I had no idea that Scottie Bowman or Don Cherry were apart of it. I know Scottie Bowman as a coach for the Wings and Don Cherry as an announcer.
Scotty won 5 Stanley Cups as head coach for Montréal in the 70's. He's a legend in the city.
