My favourite chirp of all time was when Mark Recchi asked Stu Grimson "if his parents named him Stu because they couldn't spell stupid" now that's some grade A schoolyard trash talk.
Every once an a while they’ll mic up a player. But a lot of it actually picked up by mic’s around the glass etc.
Christopher Thompson also a scattered linesman or ref will have a mic on. Also picks it up.
Yea. Plus most of the time they mic up guys they know will provide some juicy soundbites, and the guys that talk are naturally the ones that are going to be fighters too.
the referees have mics as well alot of the time. You will notice they are always following the players
Jaiden Dubois my kids listen closely for them cause they think it’s hilarious
@4:40 you can hear him say “what shoulder?” He was asking this because the other player had hurt his shoulder previously in the season and was still recovering so he was making sure he didn’t grab ahold of his hurt shoulder during the fight. This is why hockey is the classiest sport in the world. He knew he needed to fight him, but he didn’t want to injure him. Class act.
The great thing about hockey... You can somehow care enough about someone to not want to hurt them, while also be simultaneously pounding his face in...
Unfortunately that's about the classiest Rinaldo got, it's ashame to, because he had good potential to be a solid third liner.
@@MattW30356 i would be upset if someone said i had the potential to be a 3rd liner hahahahaha
Trash talk is the second most important part of hockey first is remembering to wear your cup. 😂🤣 Your reaction was priceless 😲😂
After having my first kid I had a guy ask how the baby was doing, then later on told me to go fight my kid because that's the only fight I could win. One of the best ones I've heard while playing 😂
Fighting is basically a way for the players to either help police themselves from a player playing dirty, or it can be used to try and fire up your team.
Not everyone is mic’d up but they will usually have one or two mic’d up most games.
And yes that was an outdoor game. The NHL throws a few of them a year in football or baseball stadiums. They can be quite interesting as the weather starts to play a factor in the games.
Most mics are located just outside the rink, small little holes are cut out of the glass for the mic's. Theres also one in the net.
Theres an etiquette to fighting in hockey. Tilts are part of the game
5:57 he’s says “you hit me tonight you’re getting evicted.” Bobby Ryan used to play for the ducks so he owns a house in Anaheim and he rents it out to the guy he was talking to.
There's some classic mic'd up stories. I remember one time they had Scotty Bowman who was the legendary hockey coach mic ed up. His assistant came over and said the guy was hit so hard he couldn't tell me his name. Bowman without flinching said, " tell him he's Wayne Gretzky and send them back out there"
All hockey players are at least bilingual, they are fluent in English and cursing.
There’s trash talking all the time in hockey. Idea try not to look away hockey
Mostly called chirps
They use mic’s for fun I guess
We probably miss like 90% of trash talking because most of the time there is no mic
Now there are mic’s in almost every piece of glass around the ice that’s how you hear it all.
You gotta watch: Best of Wes McCauley.
Freaking Wes is a ref but man he’s funny 😂
Definitely agree! Wes is hilarious! And there's one guy who doesn't actually need a mic to make himself heard, lol.
The reason the guy on Philadelphia said to prust on montreal which shoulder was because at the time prust had a dislocated shoulder. Shows sportsmanship in hockey
I absolutely love how you’re always asking questions about the game. Like it’s so obvious that you’re genuinely interested in hockey, that’s why I love watching all your videos
3:45 he called him a pigeon, which is hockey slang for a player who only does well when other more skilled players are doing all the work for him.
Yeah, they hang out around the opposing goal and "pick up scraps" from the other players to try and get the puck in.
The Sedin twins (Daniel and Henrik) - they played their entire lives together and had unmatched chemistry. They would throw blind passes to one another that were unlike any other duo ever in NHL history
@@Dr0Trickery th-cam.com/video/cl89Kn6eBkg/w-d-xo.html this happened yesterday
@@DeusSalis so they would have a word with the Sedins regarding chemistry
There was a player years ago named Esa Tikkanen. The Tik, they called him, because of how annoying he was.
He would trash talk constantly, but he spoke in a weird combination of languages no one else understood. The other Finnish players couldn't understand him any more than the English speakers could. Tikkanese his language was called.
Esa also had the honor of being perhaps the ugliest man in hockey. But, you had to love the guy no matter what!
Tikky Talk it was called and it's true, a finnish guy confirmed no one know what the F*** he was on about. A good "agitator" though.
@@MrMeraby And he was all about the playoffs. Six trips to Cup, five rings. He was a true grit player.
7:01 "hey turn around" hahaha so he can see his name to know who he is. Lol best chirp ever !!
Most of the time it doesn't matter if they are wearing mics or not. They chirp each other all the time.
The trash talk is an institution all to itself, generally it's a 'chirp' or 'chirping' and it starts right from the beginning. As for being mic'd up, that is also a regular occurrence, they change who get's mic'd up and the BEST moments are when people forget to warn their teammates, or when they sometimes didn't realize or forgot they themselves were mic'd up. It's great! MAN I miss hockey!!!!!!!!!!!!
Watch the movie “ice guardians” on Netflix ,it’s all about enforcers in hockey.
Thank you for this recommendation. I watched it right after I read your comment and omg I love it
Sometimes the tv guys put a mic on the player for "game sounds" very little makes it onto tv as you can tell. Trash talk is a constant, chirping is part of the game.
Sometimes they Mic up players to get some fun audio clips. It doesn’t happen all the time. Sometimes the cameras closest to the ice pick up some curse words too.
I was at a game (minor league) once where two guys got into a fight, went to the penalty boxes, kept yelling at each other through the entire penalty time, and promptly got into another fight after their penalties were over. Yes, planned fights happen in hockey.
Give the show "Letterkennny" a look if you havent already.
Chirping is an art all hockey players learn.
Matt Martin. He was the guy they told the other guy to “ go dye his hair “ !! He’s one of my favourite enforcers. Currently playing for NY Islanders !! 🔥
Speaking to Drew Miller, brother of goalie Ryan, and whose hair started going gray at an early age.
Yeah that was an outdoor game! It’s called the winter classic, happens every year. Also fights are often times talked about beforehand, but not always.
“What is violence anyways” is the best quote by anyone in the NHL ever, I lost my damn mind when he said that
You'd love some letterkenny, Adam.
There's a supercut of the female hockey players ripping each other hard. It will blow his mind, once he understands the slang.
When you learn hockey as a kid in canada, there are a few different things you focus on. Power Skating, Puck Handling, and Trash Talk.
Some fights in hockey are agreed upon before hand like you saw (let's have one) etc. However most fights are typically heat of the moment and they agree to drop the gloves. Hope that clears it up
Also they added the instigator penalty several years ago so a pre-arranged fight avoids that.
The Pittsburgh Penguins actually do a documentary series throughout the season called “Inside Penguins Hockey”. For a lot of the games they’ll mic a player up and they usually record a lot of good chirps.
Steve Ott: I'm fifth in the league so I'm probably gonna win it right there.
Also Steve Ott: Loses faceoff cleanly.
"I didn't think anyone spoke?"
How would they communicate then? LOL
Hockey is the sport where we beat each other up then laugh about it later.
"Well this isn't getting monetized.." 😂
Love how excited you got when you saw "chicken"!! It is great how this channel has essentially turned into "Adam and hockey"😂
Another great vid, Adam! Here on 31 December I wish you a belated Merry Christmas and (in my time zone) a Happy New Year (GMT-5hrs).
“It’s chicken!”
That game was being played outside. The NHL has "The Winter Classic" a game played outdoors, usually in the local Football or Baseball stadium. They have happened in Chicago,Philadelphia, New York(played in Yankee stadium), Toronto and a bunch of other cities. It has been happening for about 15 years now.
Re: Is this game outdoors? Yes, there is usually 1 or 2 outdoor games a year. They are big events, usually played in baseball or American football stadiums.
I think that was from the Stadium Series. That's the only time I remember the Pens and Hawks playing outdoors.
Been waiting on this one lol there's more as well part 2 next
adam i just found your channel yesterday and i’ve been watching ur content for hours and i love it
Every NHL team used to have an "enforcer" tough guy type player who would protect stars and team mates who were not "fighters".
The powers that be in the NHL governing body saw fit to implement an Instigator penalty against an enforcer for protecting his mates.
Hockey immediately changed forever. Thanks for these vids' Adam and Merry Christmas.🎅🍻
can you react to "Mathew Tkachuk Pissing People Off"
Absolutely hilarious how surprised you were by the shit talking 🤣 I’ve heard way worse chirps than this but my favorite is when you can hear them on live broadcast or live at the game when they’re screaming at each other 🙌🏻 I think the nhl should just mic everyone and then run a livestream where you can pick a player to listen to instead of the sportscaster
Some guys are incredibly boring to listen to mic'd up. For example, Vancouver Canucks did a Mic'd up video of Tyler Myers for his first game against winnipeg, and it was mostly just him breathing heavily... On the flipside, Winnipeg did a Mic'd up video of Nik Ehlers for their own little skills competition, and I would love to have him mic'd every game...
You have no idea how badly I wanted this video to come out. Thanks Adam 🙏🏻 Merry Christmas
This is probably my favourite video you've done so far! Great job Adam! Suggesting a Claude Giroux video, he's great! Giroux was the one doing the bird noises in this video.
My cousin Zach Sill is in this video! He was the Pittsburgh player that fought troy Brodie early on :)
You should watch the NHL highlights of the last Maple Leafs vs Hurricanes game. My god that was some shit right there.
I’ve been waiting for you to make a video on this since I started watching your channel!! 😆
Merry Christmas my man. Thanks for all the great content.
And yes, fights are often agreed upon before hand. Sometimes it’s plenty spontaneous, but it was not unheard of back in the day (less common nowadays I would think) for the “tough guys” on each team to set it up ahead of time. Other times, one tough guy would be going after one of the skill players on the opposing team, trying to get him to react in the hopes of drawing a penalty; in that case the opposing teams tough guy should in theory be around to step in. It’s part of the Hockey Code, you don’t go after guys unless they give you the nod back. Doesn’t have to be verbal either, sometimes the square off is all that is needed.
They have hockey games outside during the winter but not all the time
Tramp trickz they have one every year. It’s the Winter Classic. They also have a Canada Classic thing where 2 Canadian teams play outside
For context the chirp when he was talking about jacking up the rent, they actually live together
Just found your channel a week or ago. I subscribed immediately, love your content.
The team’s network will usually mic up players for their website and behind the scenes stuff. But this is complication is over multiple years.
I'm fairly new to your channel.. I played hockey for 22 years semi professionally I'm 41 now and I love watching new fans start to learn the game of hockey keep on trucking because of the game only gets better..... I'm from the Detroit area and played semi pro in Canada.... I'll start watching your latest videos and try to answer any questions that you have.... I'm sure some of the comments are getting from what I like to call bar hockey players couldn't cut it past the age of 15 or 16....
Oh I just got a great idea: React to NHL Playoffs antics
That’s just hockey!
Merry Christmas, everyone!
It’s actually hilarious watching you be so flabbergasted by the action on the ice. Like many people in the comments have said, only a few players will be mic’d up per game, if any at all. Trash talking, however, is one of the biggest aspects of hockey.
All the trash talk, or "chirps" as most hockey players call it, is pretty common at all levels of hockey. And yes, players absolutely ask people to fight. Sometimes it's arranged at the faceoff and sometimes during the play.
Sometimes people ask to fight but most of the time it’s probably just heat of the moment.
Its an unwritten rule of hockey that fights are a way to police the game; the refs cant and often wont see half of what goes on in the game. Most of the time fights are agreed upon between the 2 participants, either from previous talk, or the subtle stuff like shaking your gloves at waist height and both dropping them on the ice. Most players will take the fight as its a pride thing in hockey, but there are some players that refuse and they get theirs in other ways. Targeted hits, slashes to the legs and around the hands, etc. In general its better to take the fight, and the main reason why fights are still allowed; it leads to less of the dangerous hits from behind, slashes, etc. Allows people to settle differences and vent frustrations where both are prepared for the encounter.
It's also worth noting that the reason they keep saying "you drop em" or "you gonna drop em" is because to fight both players drop their gloves and fight. If only one player drops them he gets a penalty. So by agreeing to drop the gloves and fight, if you wimp out then everyone on the ice knows you're a bitch.
Do a part 2!!! This is the best! Thanks for doing this! I was one of the people that asked for it
There’s always trash talk in hockey but nhl games have mics around the glass and from different parts of the arena to pick up the audio of the ice and in these scenarios they make the mics more clear so they can hear conversations on ice
You are the best TH-camr love u man
React to Matthew Tkachuk annoying people, I’ll send you jersey if you do
I’m a leaf fan and love Tkachuk, I also want him to react to that video😂
I'm a Leaf fan...but also a Knights fan...love Matthew....Brady, not so much lol
Get some Brady in there too, a good Tkachuk brother video would be fantastic
Dude I love you reactions. I'm Canadian and love my hockey I'm now gonna follow you bro. Keep it up and do more of these. If you think hockey is rough, look up NLL, lacrosse games. That shit is brutal
Adam the guy that said "go dye your hair" is Matt Martin. He is a beast at hitting and fighting if you wanna give him a shout. He is pretty funny too.
Plz react to Evgeni Malkin
Edit: have been asking for this since the end of November
"This is not getting monetized" Hilarious.
Yeah, "Go dye your hair" was the best.
Finally! Good job Adam, I knew you would eventually get here haha
Omg yes!!!! Love this video! One of the best
12 for Boston there was Jarome iginla hed score 50 a yr and beat up anyone do a video on him
I didn't see it in this video but I love the one where the two guys ask if they want to fight then after the fight they're like "Good fight buddy good job."
"It's Chicken! It's Oven Chicken!" Hahaha love it
React to nhls dirtiest suspensions, Senators vs flyers brawl, and brad Marchand the leg sweeper
I believe the bird noises were that of a pigeon
4:35 is an amazing moment of respect proux had hurt his shoulder previously in the season and he was still recovering so the Philly player knew and wanted to know so he didn't grab that shoulder and hurt it again
As a Canadian it's awesome to see this Irishman's studio progressively collect more and more NHL memorabilia throughout the videos.
I thought trash talk was common in all sports. Doesn't this happen in soccer (football) as well?
There’s tons of chirping in hockey like this.
Haha chirping is one of the beat parts about hockey. I loved to do it. Also yes we used to ask the other person if they wanted to fight. Sometimes we start fights to try get our crud going and get the momentum. They also have one or two players mic'ed up for the game only on certain nights
Merry Christmas bud thanks for this
Please react to Dustin Byfuglien‘s top 10 biggest hits you would love it and you won’t regret it
"What is violence anyways?" lol this guy is smart
The ref said he was the most violent so he is going to the box that’s why he asked that
watching old Adam vids at 3:00am. im loving life right now
I'm just loving how much you are beginning to appreciate this game.
This type of talk starts happening when you're like 12 years old playing hockey lol
"What is violence anyway?"
LOL your reactions are great. They call it “chirping “ in hockey....and it is constant.
1:48 Zdeno chara can really hurt someone hit is top 3 fighters in history and is 6'9 he has destroyed people!
What? Half of his fights he just grabs the sweater and pulls them down to the ice without landing a punch. He's a gorilla on skates.
@@TheCrazyCanuck420 Yep, that's what he tried to do to big Georges LaRaque once, but usually was scared to fight him.
Yes trash talk is part of the game! Not as much trash talk as there used to be, but yes. I love it 🇨🇦
Hockey is the reverse of other sports in that the fans mostly get along and the players talk shit and fight.
New react to Elias Patterson please or Austin Matthews or Mitch Marner
just saw this lol yea it goes "you wanna go?" and then they fight. surprisingly civil.
I was @ a high school game once and a student said "ay Ref, get off your knees, you're blowing the game" and that remains the best chirp i've ever heard
Sorry for the random cuts - TH-cam made me trim it lol

Adam. The fact of Hockey is that now you know why Canadians and Americans think soccer in such a negative way. Hockey and Football players are the most powerful skilled athletes in the world that play all their lives and have out of this world mentality when playing the sport. The mic'd up is not always done but usually done around a particular event such as the new years day winter classic played in a football stadium or when they are do HBO documentary behind the scenes or Hockey Night in Canada television selective games. Go to a NHL game in the playoffs and you will see a sport like you never seen before. Its unbelievably intense.
