The talk between Wes McCauley and Bruce Cassidy about peaking at 18 is pretty funny. Cassidy was a star player in junior but his pro career was derailed by injuries. Wes was not good enough to make it as a player but is widely regarded as one of the top NHL refs and Cassidy has developed into a great coach at the pro level. So in a sense they did peak at 18 but still made it to the top along a different path.

6:01. The refs with orange sleeves are referees. They call the penalties, goals and when the goalie covers the puck. The ones without orange sleeves are linesman. They call icing and offside. I also hear u ask why the refs don’t break up scrums after the whistle. It’s because the linesmen break up the scrums and referees stand back and watch for penalties. I hope that clears things up

Should’ve said which ones have the orange. Adam, the referees have the orange arm bands. The linesman don’t. The difference between a linesman and a referee is the referee’s are in charge of looking out for, and calling penalties and goals. They’re also the head officials out there. The linesman are basically out there to do the rest because the referees can’t do it all at that level of play. So the linesman call offsides, icings, high sticks, hand passes, and they drop the puck at face offs other than the opening face off of each period.

No. Not true. College level has zero to do with it. Most refs come up through the ranks one degree at a time by proving themselves through the various minor hockey amateur , junior, minor leagues, routes.
College hockey is hardly a contributor though it is possible that it can count for something in the proving ground I suppose.

The orange stripe on the underside of the ref's sleeve is to make it more obvious when they raise their arm for a delayed penalty, and their arm remains raised until the offending team gains possession or a goal is scored. Important to see this because the team that didn't commit the penalty can pull their goalie for an extra attacker with no risk except an own goal. Linesmen also raise their arms for a delayed offside, but then drop their arms once the team has cleared the zone and the offside is cleared.

Doesn't you always have the same number?? Yes. When they introduced numbers instead of names on the refs they gave the more experienced refs low numbers.
But if for example swedish ref Marcus Vinnerborg ever comes back to nhl, will he not use the same number again? 45?
And isn't Vinnerborg still the only European ever to have ref'd the NHL?

The orange on the sleeves signify that referee is a head official, meaning he is able to call the penalties. The ones without the orange are called linesmen. Linesmen call icing and offsides

The orange flashing on the arms makes it easier to tell who the referees are and make benches aware there's a penalty coming. Referees call player infractions (hooking, roughing, slashing, etc.) linesmen call technical infractions like offsides, icing, and, occasionally, too many men.

    NHL referees game:
1st period- tries to ref the game but screws up most of the calls
2nd period- same as the 1st period
3rd period- doesn’t give a crap about anything and just wants to go home
Overtime- why are we still here
Shootout- JUST SCORE A FREAKING GOAL SO I CAN GO TO WENDY’S!!!

The ref blows a whistle and raises and arm signifying a penalty until there is a stoppage to asses it. The orange just makes it easier to see. This helps because if it is a delayed penalty the teams goalie can come off the bench adding an extra skater, as the penalty will not be called until the team committing the infraction touches the puck.

Hockey is definitely a different sport in terms of community feel, it will sometimes feel like you're part of a small town league, even in the NHL. If you haven't heard of it you might want to read up on the Humboldt Broncos tragedy. It was a small town Canadian team, who was honoured around the world. You can see that through how teams and refs interact for sure.

The orange that goes down the inside of the ref's arm is so players can see that his arm is up. example: if it's a delayed penalty, the team not getting the penalty can see the ref's orange arm up, so they pull their goalie without fear of being scored on. It basically lets the players know the ref's arm is up. Without the orange on the inside of the arm it's harder to see the arm up. Plus the linesmen don't have the orange so players know it's an off side not a penalty.

There are four on-ice officials. The two officials with the orange armbands are the referees, who are responsible for calling penalties, goals, and conduct face offs after goals and at the beginning of periods. The officials without the orange armbands are the linesmen, who are only responsible for calling icings, offsides, occasionally calling certain penalties, breaking up the scrums and fights, and conducting all other faceoff that the referee doesn’t.

9:25 when he says "you sprayed him" he's talking about stopping close to someone and spraying snow at them basically. You especially don't do this to a goalie unless you want a target on your back.

NHL Refs are so great cause they grew up playing the game and they really love the game. They’re great skaters and most of the time they’re pretty fair. And to be a ref in the NHL you gotta be pretty tough. As for the sleeves, orange stripes means they are a referee. Non orange is linesman. They have different jobs.

The orange stripe means that they're a referee. The linesmen have all black and white uniforms. Linesmen put there arm(s) up for offside and other infractions. The orange stripe helps players differentiate between calls.

Hi Adam, the guys with the orange armbands are the referees. The other 2 officials on the ice are the linesmen. The orange stripe runs down their arm so when they raise their arm signaling they are going to call a penalty, it is easier to see from the benches and for the players. ... make of that what you will! lol :-)

For the most part the referee-player relationship is full of ton of respect at all levels.
The orange are Referees- the call penalties
No orange linesmen- mostly responsible for calling offsides, and icing.
Number are just to identify them. Like wes is 4. Some other levels use the officals last name.

Ya ever hear the phrase, "Keep your stick on the ice"? I always thought it was from a Canadian program called, The Red Green Show but I just found this out that it really means something.
"Keep Your Stick On The Ice." Many people don't even realize this is a hockey phrase - they know it only as Red Green's life-affirming sign off. ... Keeping your stick on the ice means you can shoot at a moments notice, important when you're on the receiving end of a lucky bounce or a great pass.

there are two types of officials on the NHL ice. the plain black and white uniforms are for linesmen, who are like lesser referees. they typically drop the puck for faceoffs and call things like offsides and icings, hence the name linsemen. the actual referees have the orange sleeves and call penalties and make the rulings for reviews and goals and such

  • @cameronzaugg4784
