The first guy was Clint Malarchuk and he had his life saved that day by the Sabres athletic trainer Jim Pizzutelli. Pizzutelli had been an Army combat medic in Vietnam and he immediately pinched off Malarchuk's carotid artery until they could get him off the ice and the doctors got there and could start working on him.
I believe this is the reason all hockey goalies wear neck guards now. Was because of this indecent. I heard the other reason he lived besides pinching off the artery was that he was on the side the Medical facility was on so he was able to get treated right away.
@@dailygrind_games definitely why all goalies should unfortunately they aren't required to in most leagues this almost happend to my little brother cause at the time he wasn't wearing one got a skate to the neck and missed the artery by like a 1/16 of an inch. He wears one now but still should be a requirement like mouth pieces cause puck or skate to the neck has a good chance of seriously damaging you if not killing.

@@emmaduncan2991 Well, the worst injury someone survived that is. Bill Masterson died on the ice afterall, after he hit his head on the ice wearing no helmet. Also, Malarchuk was close do death but made a full recovery and played on in the NHL. Others who have less graphic injuries have had career ending injuries (Pronger, Savard, Forsberg etc), so you could always argue which is worst. The life threatening one who made a full recovery or the injuries that werent life threatening but stopped players from ever playing again.

This is one of the reasons we have trouble liking soccer/football in Canada. After being used to Hockey injuries and how tough we play, seeing the soccer guys dive and cry when they are barely hit ruins the game for many of us.
Its OK. The rest of the world loves soccer. Very few love hockey.
Same with Americas who love Hockey. I liked to play soccer but cant watch it because the so called "injuries"
athletes here in the states have a bit of a "prima donna" complex, meanwhile NHL players, will maybe go off the ice, disappear for a couple minutes, then return with a track of stitches.
A lot of people that say soccer is a soft game game have never played. There is definitely flopping in both sports. Soccer players probably think line changes and tv timeouts are for pussies. I love both sports and played them both at a decent enough level. Soccer is incredibly hard on the body I had to quit playing soccer before I had to quit playing hockey. Now basketball that’s for pussies.

The punch at 5:38 from Todd Bertuzzi, broke Steve Moore's neck and ended his career.
The punch didn't do that. It was the fall with everyone pilling up on top of the guy that did that kind of damage.

Every single team has a “trainer” a sort of doctor to help the team whenever they go. But there’s also one or two Certified doctors behind the net in case something bad like a Richard Zednik throat accident happens again.
The goalie, Clint Malarchuk, who got his neck slit by the skate survived. So did the other guy, Richard Zednik. Both could continue to play in NHL afterwards, Clint Malarchuk for almost 10 years and Richard Zednik played another 2-3 years in the NHL before changing leagues.
The goalie that got hit in the head by the stick, Tomas Vokoun, had no internal damage done, and played another 4 years in the NHL.
Steve Moore, the player who got sucker punched, played his first, and only, season in the NHL that year. The reason for the attack was because he gave a deliberate check to the head to the opposing teams captain in the last match between the two teams. Steve Moore broke his neck and got paralyzed immediately from his neck down. The guy who sucker punched, Todd Bertuzzi, got sentenced to 80 hours of community service and he played in NHL up to the 2014 season.
Max Pacioretty, the guy who was pushed face first into the side of the glas, got a sever concussion and a damaged cervical vertebra from the hit. The player that pushed him in, Zdeno Chara, did not face a suspension. Both are still playing in the NHL today.
Jannik Hansen, the player who collapsed on the bench, got no long lasting damage dealt to him. He got a concussion from the hit and, if my memory serves me right, he collapsed due to lack of oxygen (he got hit in the chest area first, punching the air out of him) and because of the concussion. I might be wrong on why he collapsed, but I think that was why.
Steve Moore wasn't paralyzed. I don't know why you'd say that. He broke some vertebrae but he wasn't paralyzed
Rebecca Johnson You’re right! I have only read the swedish articles about the event. The term used in sweden for his injury was broken neck which in sweden is a nicer way of saying paralyzed. Must have been a misstranslation or missinterpretation.

I was 12 years old when I saw Zednik get sliced live on TV, also saw Martin St. Louis get his face sliced by a linesmans skate after a faceoff from 7 rows up in Ottawa.

2:21 Yes, that was the first carotid artery slash injury. Unfortunately, while he did play again after he recovered, he suffered PTSD from witnessing Florida Panthers forward Richard Zedník suffering the same injury in 2008 (3:42) when Malarchuk was a goaltending coach for the Buffalo Sabres, treated by the same doctor.
What I find even crazier, is that Malarchuk not only survived having his throat slashed, dude survived a self inflicted gun shot to the head
6:17 The difference between a clean hip check versus the blindside hit when the one receiving the hit doesn't see the hits. This is why you learn to fall and absorb hits before you even learn how to skate, even when you don't play ice hockey.

The New York Rangers Kevin Klein got part of his ear cut off and stitched back together and came back in later to score the game winning goal. These guys are the toughest players on earth
I was watching that game and was in awe that he just came right back in after getting stitched up. I have a Klein jersey. Miss him. :( So Adam knows, Kevin Klein is alive and well but suffers from a terrible back so he retired for the NHL but went to Europe to continue playing.

Malarchuk getting his neck cut is easily the scariest injury I've seen on the ice, at least on a visual basis. It was shortly after this that a lot of minor leagues made neck guards mandatory. I still wish that it was a piece of gear needed in the NHL. Necks and blades don't mix. Also, injuries like these aren't a common occurrence. It's a rare event that you see something to this extreme.

Not anymore, after the Florida Panthers player (second clip) neckguards became mandatory

as a Canadian who played hockey a lot growing up, neck guards do restrict head movement a bit...not a lot but enough that you wont see them mandate it in the NHL...

@Ali Desch This is the league where helmets had to be "grandfathered" in, these are guys who have "issues" with any kind of gear they feel, might effect their play, which is why visor rule didn't work, players had problems with glare...

To answer your question before you ask, shootouts occur at the end of a game to settle a winner if/when an overtime period produces no goal (overtime periods are “sudden death”, meaning, if a team scores at any time during the overtime period, that team wins and the game is over despite time remaining on the clock).

I remember watching the Caps practice at Kettler 10 years ago when Brooks Laich broke his eye socket when he shot the puck and it came off the post into his face. The sound of the bones breaking was louder than the sound of the puck hitting the post. That was fckn creepy!
Also remember during playoffs in 2010 when Eric Belanger took a stick to the face from Bergeron... went to the bench pulled out several teeth and got back on the ice after having basically a root canal between periods because some of the shattered teeth had roots hanging from them. Oh, and of course the stitches for his mouth. But just seeing him digging his fingers into his bloody mouth and setting teeth down on the bench next to him before any trainers got to him was pretty crazy.
Hockey is the true blood sport.
Ive seen this happen to players in minor leagues. One player basically refused med care he got teeth chipped and he basically told the doc to do what he had to do but do it in ten minutes and that he was going back to ice. BOY I WAS SHOCKED.
Hockey is truely gruesome. Minor pros also dont make the $$$ like NHL do.
4:06 neck guards do exist actually, they are mandatory up until the major junior level or until you turn 19. It's also mandatory (in Canada anyway) to wear a full cage or full visor on your helmet until you're 18.
WHL hockey only mandates a full cage and neck guard for 15 year olds, after that no neck for WHL players until the memorial cup

The first video was from the video feed, the actual braodcast was on a different angle and that cameraman knew he was on the broadcast at that moment and did respond to the commentators request that he take the camera off Clint Malarchuk, he wasn't allowed to let the puck get out of the screen, but he was able to zoom out enough for the image to be indistinct. The goalie(Clint Malarchuk) was taken to the hospital, across the street from the arena, and his carotid arteries were re-attached. He was able to suit up and practice 6 days after losing nearly two liters of blood. Malarchuk's incident is why all goalies wear a plastic neck shield.
lazyidiotofthemonth They don't all wear neck guards in the NHL and that's not why they wear them. It's for pucks to the neck. A skate could still easily get under a neck guard because the angle. I had to wear a neck guard as goalie in high school in Minnesota and I hated it. They're so annoying.
@@TSandstrom30 The Neck Sheild is in fact required gear for goalies and the NHL implimented the rule during the summer after the Clint Malarchuk incident.
lazyidiotofthemonth That can't be true that they're required because I see NHL goalies without them. And maybe that is why they started using them, but having played goalie and been required to use one it was always thought of as protection from pucks. I never even thought or heard of it being for protection from blades, and I've played and been around hockey my whole life. And they weren't even required until high school varsity in Minnesota, which would make more sense that's it's about pucks as obviously high school shots are harder than younger level shots. And if it was about blades it wouldn't make sense that they weren't required at younger levels. It just isn't a very effective way to prevent blade to neck injuries because a blade would be coming from underneath where the neck guard doesn't even cover. And I would still get pucks to the neck even with the guard because it moves around and there's still unprotected area depending on the angle of the puck and/or movement of the guard.

You hear the commercial in the first clip because that’s the raw footage. Back then when it was live viewers would’ve been watching the commercial and wouldn’t have seen anything from that point. The audio is a the audio from the live feed so we’re hearing what the viewers are watching.
Watched live the games with Zednik and Pacioretty. those was scary moments. Btw, they implemented some changes to have padding added where the glass gets taller toward the end zones to prevent what happened to Pacioretty to happen again, or at least lessen the risk of severe injury.
Worse than seeing one of those live is being in the building. We were pretty far from the ice, so I thought Pacioretty was dead.
The guy who slid for a mile... That ended his career.
The broken neck ended his career... Bertuzzi only got a year suspension for that...
@@aralornwolf3140 And we all knew it was coming, just not who was going to do it. Vancouver was really pissed off after Moore's head-hunt hit on Naslund previously in the season. In this game, the Avalanche were up 8-2 at this point.
It was the perfect storm for some unreal shit. When it's that blown out and ugly, you don't want to send your stars out. They're going to get run. So you put the Moore's out there...but you shouldn't because he's a target. So who do you play?

We do have neck protectors, NHL is the only league that hasn’t made them mandatory. Unfortunately, majority of NHL players don’t wear them as a result.
There's WAY more leagues than just the NHL that hasn't made neck guards mandatory. Almost all leagues don't care whether you wear one or not.
Glasterz I meant like minor hockey and junior and college hockey. You have to wear one there. There are probably a few european leagues where you gotta wear one as well. Majority of pro leagues- like the NHL don’t care tho.

From what I understand, barely avoided jail. At least Moore was awarded a ton of money in the lawsuits
the worst part is steve moore still to this present day meets people hes already met and doesnt remember meeting them because he suffers from really bad memory loss. doesnt remember them at all. he suffers from anxiety and depression now as well.
Steve Moore was a bum, nothing but a 4 line player. He took out Naslund out for the season with a dirty knee. So the Canucks kicked his useless ass.
You had me laughing out loud with your reaction to some of these injuries. Hockey players are a quirky lot. Many don't where practical protection if they feel it will affect their performance. Neck guards are mandatory for minor hockey players. After that, most stop wearing them. Keep up the great reactions. Cheers from Canada!

I watched the NHL worst injuries video for the first time a few weeks ago and it took me about half an hour to make it through because I had to keep pausing the video and googling all of the injured guys to see if they were okay now.

There is neck guards and helmets like football helmets but most people don't wear them. You also have to wear them till your 18 then most people ditch um

The first clip is former Sabres goalie Clint Malarchuck. There was a doctor in the Arena that saved his life. Then the second clip also happened in Buffalo, but to the Flordia guy. You can hear the announcers referencing it.

I would highly recommend reading his autobiography "The Crazy Game"(That was Clint Malarchuk who had his neck sliced open at the beginning of the video) he was never the same after the injury. Neck guards are now worn by goaltenders.
Tod bertuzzi vegetablized thst guy when he did that and ruined his life, and at the same time scared his own. He regrets what he did to this day but what is done is done

Steve Moore made a dirty hit on Bertuzzi's team mate Marcus Naslund, injured him and there was no penalty called. It was Bertuzzi's job to remind Moore that you don't make dirty hits on stars.
Bertuzzi went too far because Moore tried to run away and wouldn't fight.

WTF are you talking about??? Steve Moore’s career was ruined and he had a major injury. He was HARDLY vegetabilized. Just google any of the dozens of interviews he’s done over the last 15 years. He looks just fine physically.
I saw a game many years ago where a lineman fell off the boards and landed on someone's skate. From his wrist to his elbow was laid open. They got home stitched up (over 100 stitches) he came back and finished officiating the game.
you have to watch the best goals, best dangles, and best saves too. it’s a brutal sport to be sure, but there’s some insane grace to it at times
It's amazing cuts from skate blades don't happen more often, but in the history of the league it's actually pretty rare.
I play high school hockey in Minnesota. There are neck guards but players rarely use them.
3:59 there is a neckguard, most nhl, ohl and ahl players opt out of using it, same goes with most travel teams as well (14-17 yoa)

I was at the Bell Centre in Montreal when Pacioretty got almost beheaded. For the first 3 minutes, everybody thought he was dead. The whole crowd was so silent, we could hear the what was said on the ice.
I was a bit surprised, that the clip started with the Malarchuk incident, as that's usually saved for the "grand finale!"

there are one sports doctor per team, usually near the players bench. Than they have real medics on standby at the zamboni area usually and sometimes also a doctor at the penatly boxes. depending on if the team doctors can manage or not the other docotrs are sent over from over ice.
the one where u said that isn’t a worst injury with the Vancouver Canucks. It was actually one of the worst. The player died on the bench and was dead for several minutes before the medical team revived him

I was at the game with the puck to the eye. Scariest moment I’ve seen live in hockey. He got hit in the eye and he started kicking his legs I’m guessing out of pain. The arena went silent, and the players players cautiously for the next 5-10 minutes, which hardly ever happens. Crazy moment.
I was at the pacioretty neck injury game when I was six and all I remember was the dead silence and not knowing what happened.
