  • In this video I will show you the easiest way of cleaning the fans without disconnecting any wires or components from Y540.
    Me after cleaning the fans after a long time saw a drastic improvement is thermal performance as even when my CPU was at 100% usage the fans were quite and didn't rev up to its max speed making it one of the most efficient ways to improve the performance.
    The model used here has :
    Intel i7-9750H
    Nvidia RTX 2060
    16 GB DDR4 3200 MHz
    1 TB SSD + 512 GB HDD
    1440p 144Hz
    2 x 2 802.11 ac + Bluetooth 5.0

    The bulky gaming laptops of old are gone, and now is the time to embrace a machine that is worthy of you-stylish on the outside, savage on the inside. At 24mm thin and 2.3kg light, the Lenovo Legion Y540 Laptop was redesigned to deliver the ideal balance between epic gaming performance and practical portability.
    Expert craftsmanship extends beyond design. The Y540 represents the culmination of thousands of engineering hours to deliver a laptop that is both powerful and thin. To support up to 3200 MHz DDR4 memory, PCIe SSD storage, and more, our engineers combined their expertise in battery, I/O placement, thermals, and motherboard design to pack the best hardware into one powerful gaming laptop.
    With its thin bezels, the Y540 packs more than 2 million pixels into a near-edgeless 15-inch FHD display. Combined with up to 144 Hz refresh rate, 300 nits of brightness, and an IPS Antiglare screen, this laptop brings your favorite games to life, for breathtakingly immersive gameplay on the go.

    I wanted to thank you dearly. I am usually scared to tinker with electronics but this time I decided to step up. I hadn't opened my laptop since I bought it 2 years ago or smth and I had issues with FPS drops. Man were my fans full of dust. Now everything works fine again. I was mainly scared of the de-clipping part and I broke a knife initially but I eventually got it opened quite cleanly! I recommend everyone this tutorial if you own a Y540 however it's really important to have a brush in my opinion, I don't know how I would have been able to clean the fans efficiently otherwise.

    Even with the best of care, those fans and vents get clogged and gross very quickly. Why oh why don't manufacturers make access easier? That back grill could have been made to lift out independently, allowing easy access for cleaning but, no, you have to remove the entire back panel. Not for the faint-hearted and this one is quite straightforward.
    Still, many thanks for the video, very helpful.

    Could you use compressed air?

    • @SaMiNM
      @SaMiNM  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes you can use compressed air for cleaning the fan but if you are cleaning after a long time you will see that some dust can only be removed by directly applying physical force on them, that why I chose a gentle painting brush.
      I suggest that at the end you can use compressed air to make sure that the exhaust vents are clean...

    Is it possible to remove the fans by removing the two screws on sides of it ?

    • @SaMiNM
      @SaMiNM  4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      No there are more screws under the heat pipes which can only be removed by removing the thermal cooling system completely which is difficult as removing it means while putting it back on you have to reapply thermal paste on both GPU and CPU and most while screwing back the heat sink on the processor and GPU if one side is applied more pressure it can cause the chips to crack or break into two pieces which is something you definitely don't want to happen at any cost.
      I DO NOT RECOMMEND TRYING TO REMOVE THE FAN UNLESS YOU ARE IN PRESENSE OF SOMEONE WHO KNOWS HOW TO DO THERMAL PASTING...

    But main thing u dint show in the video was to how to deep clean the fans.

      How often depends upon the location you are in, If you are using it mostly in an air conditioned room you will be needing to do it less often compared to someone who uses it in open window room.
      The best way to decide when to do it is when u notice that fans are ramping up frequently at minimal usage OR shine your phone's flashlight into the intake grill at the bottom after shutting it down where u can clearly see how clogged up the fans are.....

      This will improve the cooling for sure but if u don't any major improvement then I think the thermal paste in your laptop is not done properly or burned up....

      Yep fan cleaning you can do it by yourself no risk but repasting involves the step of screwing back the heatsinks back on the CPU and GPU where if done wrong and one side gets excess pressure it can cause the chip to crack into pieces that is literally destroying the entire laptop.... Something no one should experience...

    Can't understand why Lenovo hasn't made that back grill detachable without having to open up the entire back. It also doesn't seem to be coming of easily and there's a risk of breaking those internal pins. Companies these days would make everything hard to get in so you send it to them for $. I guess my fans will stay dirty. Thanks for the vid anyway

    • @SaMiNM
      @SaMiNM  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lenovo's laptops are actually more easy to open as their design are more straight lined and not curved like most of the other laptops on the market where thery are curved and fitted with red accent pieces for gamer look which makes removing the back plate be needing to remove additional parts and unclipping is an actual nightmare..

    May I use the vacuum cleaner for this?

    • @SaMiNM
      @SaMiNM  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The dust in the fan are the type which are formed by very small dust particles that got accumulated together over a long time. These dust particles can only be removed by applying direct physical contact force on their surface.
      If u plan on using a vacuum cleaner you have get the size of the nozzle and vents matching and if u accidentally drop the nozzle on the board it could damage it.....
      The best way I would recommend if u want more cleaning action is to use COMPRESSED AIR CANISTERS to blow air in and out but after completing the brush cleaning..

    • @SaMiNM
      @SaMiNM  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's normal, one fan is for CPU (bigger) and the other one is for GPU and there is no dedicated fan speed control inbuit (maybe 3rd party will be available) rather it has three modes available in the Vantage menu as performance, balance and quiet. While gaming use performance mode for better performance..

      I think there are two clips on the extruded side that need to be unclipped. Correct me if I am wrong...

    Hello! I have problem with my y540. When I enter any game, it gets hot at charging port and it just stops charging (charging port checked at repair shop and they said charging port is not a problem). Should I try remove battery and test it without battery?

    • @SaMiNM
      @SaMiNM  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Both the laptop are really similar in appearance and parts the opening method is same you would use the same set of tools the same way but u could watch an opening video of Y530 and clean the fans the way shown in this video...

    Will this work, I ordered a set of screwdrivers for this and I'm pretty prepared but I wanna know if it will actually work, I don't wanna go through all of this just for it to end up breaking or what not.

    Will doing this void my warranty?? How will the technician come to know whether i opened my machine or not?

    • @SaMiNM
      @SaMiNM  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No it does not as laptops these days are expandable (expect any Apple Product) as for anyone looking forward to add an NVME m.2 drive, SSD or want to swap there wifi networking card they have to open their laptop and there is no sticker inside that says it does as you can see in the video.
      Warranty mainly covers for manufacturing defects and warranty will only become void if u break anything inside while trying to repair it....

    Are the cooling fans on Y530 and Y540 the same? I own y540 and the fans require replacement, but I'm only able to find fans of y530 in the store near me. Can I use them instead? Because they look kinda similar. Will it work the same?

    • @SaMiNM
      @SaMiNM  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are using it mostly in an air conditioned room you will be needing to do it less often compared to someone who uses it in open window room.
      The best way to decide when to do it is when u notice that fans are ramping up frequently at minimal usage OR shine your phone's flashlight into the intake grill at the bottom after shutting it down where u can clearly see how clogged up the fans are.....
