Just wanna shout you out man....tried this today and it worked like a charm. Although it took me 2 hours to do it(just cause I was being extra careful) but in the end it was worth it, temps dropped around 20 degree C(used Arctix Mx4). Also, in my piece there were just 6 spring screws not 7 inside. If it was not for this video then I wouldn't have even tried to do it. So, thanks again.
Also, in 2022 if someone is confused between Mx4 and Mx5 then go with 4 as its better and cheaper.
wow, i repaste my Legion 5 and my CPU temp went from 94C down to 55C, and the RTX 3070 went from 66C down to 37C, truly amazing, i can't believe it!

Great video, thanks for putting this up. I would suggest to anyone trying, from personal experiance, ALWAYS start with disconnecting the battery as the very 1st step. Use a plastic tool, never a metal one! :)

thanks for this, I just replaced the thermal pads in my y740 this way. Somewhat different internals but close enough that I could follow this. I opted to use knockoff thermal pads of the same model as stock, and my load temps have come down at least 10c. Thanks!

Replaced my thermal paste on my 2year old y540, 9300h, 1660 ti since I had massive heat problems lately. Been gaming alot more than I used to and saw a constant increase in temperature. Undervolting my CPU(ThrottleStop -150mV) and GPU(Afterburner 0.900V@1700MHz curve) just didn't cut it so I found your video.
Temperature went down about ~20degree Celsius, I couldn't believe it. Used my 5+year old arctic silver 5. Thanks for the good video, so glad I finally have good temps again. Hopefully I didn't put to much thermal paste on it. Think I went a bit overboard after rechecking your video lol. Well time will tell

Went a little overboard on the thermal paste but overall nice video. I don't think any method works best, I just use the pea method. But too much thermal past can hurt performance as well. You want just barely enough to cover the entire dye, which when the block is screwed down the paste will spread. Too much paste and the heat just has more material it has to go through to be removed. Literally the least amount in order to cover it all is ideal, no air the heat has to travel through, but no excess paste as well
How often should we reapply the thermal paste? I bought a 2nd hand y7000 it's a 2019 model I think the last owner did not reapply the thermal paste yet. Playing ac odyssey my thermal can reach 70°c on room temp while using an electric fan for ventilation. Is this still fine?

Fair warning: Don't do this if your laptop is new. If yours is thermal throttling too often with lowish load, take it to official warranty, they probably forgot/did not fully pasted your cpu or gpu. I say this because the thermal paste lenovo used is pretty good and actually outperform MX4. This is from actual personal experience, had to open it up again and replace paste with PTM7950 pads to see any actual minor improvement compared to stock paste.
Gelid GC Extreme is claiming less pump out effect anyone used them before? What's best for Y540 (9300h and 1660Ti)?
I repasted my y540 with grizzly kryonaut and cleaned the fans, temps are almost the same... is there anything else I could do? CPU still throttles to 95° when gaming , gpu now maxes out at 78 but atill not what I hoped for..
after how much time it is recommended to clean the fans and replace the thermal paste . my y540 gonna complete 2 years soon and my facing lag in performance and the performance in game is also decreased

How else have you improved your y540s performance? If any undervolt, what are your settings?
I could only undervolt mine by around 100 C this time. I had another y540 that i could bring down 140 mV before i got errors in the TS Benchmark.
@@Mort_Mort You can undervolt CPU by cca 0,5-1,0V max, I use 250mV, that is enough....but if you undervolt cache by more than 100mV, then the system can crash. Nothing fatal tho

Hey thanks for the video i wanted to ask you used artic mx4 right did it seep out of the CPU dye?? I saw quite a lot people saying the paste doesn't hold for more than a week and seeps out and boom thermal throttling again
Yes, it will lose around 10% of the moisture in a week but its common only all thermal pastes are made like that so they flow easily and spread evenly on the die when pressure is applied. After that it stays consistent for 6 months or 1 year depending upon the usage. Thermal paste mostly start to powder when temps go above 90 to 95°C and also how long it stays in those temp range.

I think yes you need to change it bc air bubbles can limit the contact between heat sink and cpu , did you check the cpu gpu thermal after you put it together?

If it did, then its normal only cuz when starting up the fans spins up for a few seconds just to check if its working in the same way as your keyboard lights turn on for a second when turning on. Then the fans will only kick into action when the temps go high..
If it didn't spin after-all then I say you have not connected the fan cables properly back to the socket which you can redo and it will be all working back to normal.
The only thing I would add to this is to put the thermal paste in the shape of an X. This ensures maximum coverage. The single line won't cover the thermal paste until the edges. If you take a glass slide and press down on the thermal paste in the two different shapes(X and a line), you'll see that the X shape covers the CPU/GPU completely.
When I recorded the video I wanted to make sure its easy and simple for everyone to follow. The main reason i chose a line instead of X or 5 dot arrangement is that it has less chance of messing up..

With low viscosity pastes (which I don't use anymore on direct-die, i switched to high viscosity and PTM7950) the X or manual spread is indeed recommended. If a small part of the die remains uncovered it might fry the chip due to a very high hotspot on that area.
Trying to unscrew the heatsink, but the screws were so stubborn and wouldn't turn. Even trying applying pressure, but still results with the screwdriver jumping off the screw and possibly striped the screws. My screwdriver may not be perfect for this one. Im using a jakemy screwdriver and the head was a bit sharper. Probably have to take to the third party or official service shop just to be safe and probably won't ended up with stripped screws
UPDATE:
After a bit of a miracle, i attempt to unscrew the stubborn screw again. This time even though a bit striped, i finally managed to unscrew. The procedure runs smoothly. Well unplugging the battery is very hard so i gave up on that. The fan plugs seems delicate so i wouldn't dare to force pull it. Just applying the canned air spray and replace the paste. And done

Hey, I got the same laptop and suddenly temperatures on DESKTOP went nuts, normally they were like 45 degrees on average and now they are average 60 degrees. Do you think it is thermal paste fault and that I should change it? It was stock so maybe that would be the problem?
The average thermal paste lifetime is 1 year but with extensive heat creating tasks like gaming it will be reduced further. So if it's an old paste consider repasting it.

I think it would be enough to re-paste the GPU and CPU once. I would recommend Thermal Grizzly only if u do heavy intensive work [ rendering or long high intensive gaming sessions for hours ] on you laptop and in all other situation MX-4 work great and also costs less.

I would suggest that you do it every year it mostly depends on the thermal paste you brought its mostly a year max. In a new system the thermal paste most probably wont be applied correctly and wont be of a good quality as its done in huge assembly line in minimum time and its better to replace it with a good one then itself..

Not all thermal paste goes bad with time. I just repasted mine with a 3-4 year old Noctura NT-H1 thermal paste and it did WONDERS! :)

Hey can i use hand sanitizer which contains ( isopropyl, purified water , triethanolamine, Acylate copplymer , perfume ), i have ordered isopropyl but is haven’t reached yet i donno why its been a month , and i am done waiting. Pls reply
I will say I don't recommend using the hand sanitizer as it contains not just alcohol but chemical mix which will not evaporate away and leave residues on the chip which can stain it and make the surface difficult for thermal paste to spread evenly and conduct heat properly.
I say wait for the 99% pure alcohol as it is suitable for this application than rather risking damaging a 1000 dollar laptop to save a buck...

@@nomadstidbits Enthusiast grade pastes (Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut)do dry out faster than OEMS (MX-4) and are better at conducting heat because of it. But in case of these two its in the negligible scale of effect for an normal user and only their price difference is the major factor.

@@alien6874 When I did it for the very first time they screws had glue on their treads which made it tough but after a little bit of force it came out easily.. If you had applied like great force and still not coming out then don't try too much as you can wear out the cavity cut on the screws which you don't want so I suggest you giving it once to a store for repasting so that once they loosened the screws the next time you can do it easily by yourself...

Stopped working meaning it doesn't spin at all ? or spins super slow ? If it doesn't spin at all means its motor maybe dead and that fan needs to be replaced. The thing with disassembling the fan casing is that its extremely difficult as its casing is bend into shape rather than screwed so i won't recommend you try to dissemble the fans.
How much improvement in temperature did you get after this ?
Lowered by 6℃ and the frequency of fans spinning up decreased by a lot..

If it's a new one and it's reaching 90s then it could be due to a bad thermal paste used by the manufacturer or could be due to uneven applying of thermal paste when it was assembled as 1000s are assembled one after other and they might not have done it properly....
Idk much about the temp range of an idealpad but check online and if it off then consider doing a repaste..

Try getting a better screwdriver, cuz I went to get a cheap ass one but it was only able to open the top part of the laptop but not the bottom one.

I also have this issue and for me the cable adapter heats up a lot when charging too. I think it could be due to an misaligned pin the charging socket and can be fixed by replacing the charging port.

Good day sir, I have legion 5 amd, ryzen 5 4600h with gtx 1650 Ti, my processor average thermal is 39, when in gaming it recaches 60, I don't have external fans, I only have laptop stand for it to lift, also its warm here in my place since its a trophical country, do u think my temps are okay?
39℃ at idle and 60℃ during gaming is fine only. Just a small lift is enough while gaming so that there is smooth airflow for cooling. Just keep an eye out in the long run for any thermal throttling and consider undervolting it for better performance and cooling...

It would be wise to disconnect the battery before touching anything.
For doing thermal repaste it's fine. If you want you could disconnect the battery you can but the connector is a really difficult one to remove and is easy to break which is something you don't want.
Another way is to ground yourself on doing it where here I was grounded to the table....

I had like 65-75 degrees with my cpu and gpu without any problem but after a ram upgrade (I added an 8gb stick) the cpu reaches 95 degrees. Is this normal? Should I repaste or not?
Does your new ram's voltage match to the old ones if it doesn't i think it will cause some heat issues. Always try to have same memory on both slots for the best performance.

@@SaMiNM it got worse I think. before my temperature on idle was below 40°c for gpu and 45°c for cpu and for gaming was 50 c for gpu and 60 for cpu. After repaste for idle become 45 c for gpu and around 50 - 52 for cpu. While for gaming it become 60°c for gpu and 80-85 for cpu.

1. The paste is not spread uni-formally.
2. Not enough thermal paste was used.
3. Paste used was expired or hardened.
This could be fixed when you re-paste again but this time try to follow these step too:
1. Make sure you clean off the residue of the old paste properly or else the new paste can't make proper contact with die and heat sink and also causing it to spread unevenly. Also try to clean the paste in the gap.
2. Before applying the thermal paste the tube of paste in the nozzle will be dry so squeeze that bit out and when you get the smooth consistent flowing paste use that for pasting.
3. Try spreading the paste out evenly on the surface with the nozzle itself and the edges so that it covers the entire surface and the gaps.
Putting too much paste on a socket generally won't hurt thermal performance, because the act of tightening down the cooler squeezes out the excess. Too little paste is bad, but anything above the minimum threshold will have the same effect once the cooler is tightened down.

I have a problem. The fans are not spinning but even before the fix i think they weren't spinning
Try to replace the broken fan with a new replacement one and check which side it is as both sides fans dimension are different. If you don't fell confident doing these try giving the laptop to service centers as they will help in these cases.
Does anyone knows how to set fans at maximum speed?
Go to Lenovo Vantage and set Cooling mode to Performance Mode and your fans will ramp up to its maximum speed when it gets hot...
What temps did you observe afterwards?
Lowered by 6 - 8℃ and the frequency of fans spinning up decreased by a lot and while gaming no thermal throttling was detected after this..
dont you have to deconnnect the battery or something to be sure to not hurt yourself?

Also I had observed that spreading the thermal paste evenly before placing the heatsink over it has been the most effective one where it dropped by 12℃.
