Repasted mine using kyronaut
I got 7700hq with -160mV before repasting the temp was hovering between 70-85
After done repasting, its stable around 65-70 while gaming

I've read a lot on this, people seem to get similar results to yours with that paste, but a lot better results with Arctic MX-4
The bios update on the 730 lowered the wattage that the CPU could pull 👍
According to the community the 530 has yet to receive this update. And that was almost a year agony
Explains why there was basically no difference between the one that came with it and the "latest" version, I guess I can revisit if it ever comes to the 530 😛
It has 45W PL1 while GPU is under load and 60W PL1 when GPU is not under load

Hi guys,
I ordered a Y540 for my cousin and he was really disappointed, because of the audio issue.
I did some investigation and those sneaky lenovo engineers already created a fix, but hid it very good.
The problem mainly seems to be, that the CPU voltages ramp up and down very fast for power saving, leading to a crackling noise at every transition. That also explains, why the sound is fine when gaming, as the CPU is always running at full load.
The fix Lenovo implemented was simply to make those voltage transitions slower and therfore reduce/remove the crackling sound.
Here are the steps I did to fix issue on my cusins Y540:
1. Download an install the latest BIOS from Lenovo's site (BHCN32WW)
-> This will take through a reboot and all, just let it sit and don't touch your notebook while updating
2. Shut down your PC
3. Use a small pin (for example a SIM-Card removal tool from your phone) and poke it into the whole between the USB Port and the Power LED in the right of the Notebook
4. The notebook should start and give you a small menu
5. Select "Setup Bios"
6. Select "Configuration" by pressing the right arrow key
7. Select "Slow slew rate for ia domain" (arrow down) and press enter
8. Select "fast/8" and press enter
9. Press the F10 key to reboot
When you boot into windows now, the sound should be good.
I can't really tell what other implication those settings have (maybe the systems gets unstable, or a little less power efficient), but it worked for us.

Anytime you open up your laptop, you always have to disconnect the battery and discharge it( hold the power button for couple of seconds) to make sure you don’t short circuit anything!

@@luisrodriguez5586 i repasted it not long after I got it because it was getting pretty toasty. It helped immensely, but sadly didn't last all that long and the temps rose again. What ultimately ended up getting temps in check was undervolting the cpu. There are some great tutorials on here to help with that.

For those of you who have found a connection between the audio crackling and your wifi card, this is a great solution:
Right click on wifi icon (right bottom of task bar) and choose Open Network & Internet Settings.
Now you are at Network Connections window, Status tab (win10), click on Change Adapter Options
Right click on your enabled network adapter (Wi-Fi) and click on Properties
Now you are at Wi-Fi Properties window, click on Configure button.
Click on Advanced tab,
You will see properties in a multilist window, choose Transmit Power.
There will be a setting of selected property in the right side, choose the 4- Mid-High or 3- Mid option (I use 4, and default was 5-Highest)
Credit to pseudofate who posted this solution for the Y520 model - it worked like a charm on my new Y540.

I have a two year old Asus laptop with a gtx 960m and an i7-6700HQ, and after so much time the computer used to get really hot (like 65°C iddle), don't even get me started on the thermal throttle. After opening up my laptop, cleaning the fans, repasting and undervolting the laptop, I've managed to get around 38-40°C iddle and never get past of 85°C while gaming.
If you have a laptop for more than 1 year, I think it's pretty much a must to clean the fans and repaste.

Did u go through with the repaste? If yes, what paste did u use and was there a change in thermals? I live in hot environment which makes my thermals still high even max fans and undervolting, so any help would be appreciated :).

I've used MX-4, and the difference was minimal. Think it only dropped like 2-3°C max on load, and by load I mean hours of Cities Skylines with almost 200k population. Regardless, I had to get a regular cooler (not the slim type) and that helped a further 4°C drop at least in my hot environment (average ambient temperature of 35°C here) and I also occasionally undervolt my CPU if it gets too hot for too long. A 2-hour CS game still goes above 95°C here, and 90°C in air conditioned room. I'm now considering Conductonaut, which lead me to reviews and back to this video!
I'm even considering modding external copper pipes in contact with the rear fins leading to a copper plate with liquid cooler...but that'll just be a hobby project when I have the time for it.

The laptop started throttling when loaded for long periods of time, so I repasted it. The temps dropped around 5-7 degrees when fully loaded but at low loads like browsing, reading pdfs, etc. The temps are almost the same. Thought I would share this if it helps anyone.
I have the same exact configuration and I got it in the us straight from lenovo, got mine on sale for 800 before state taxes, pretty good deal would say since the, comparable models of the same laptop with 1050 were going around the same. Except mine only came with a 8gb stick. Thanks for doing this Jarrod.
*edit* Definitely re pasting my Y530 and under vol ting this little machine thermal throttles, but its such a great little machine for engineering student. Doesn't look flashy, I font stand out much in classes its lovely, definitely a laptop you can carry around a student.
Ah cool, thanks for confirming that it can be bought there, yeah I got mine through the Lenovo website too, so maybe that's just the only option for this configuration. Good to hear it's going well!
Conclusion: undervolting keeps CPU cooler than repasting
Depends on the paste I guess, but that seems to be my experience in the two laptops I've done it with so far, liquid metal would probably tip the balance a bit.

@@JarrodsTech Not necessarily. The heatsinks themselves are your bottlenecks. They just don't offer more surface area to disperse more heat in the air, so no matter how fast heat goes from the dies to the cooler, you won't get more heat dissipated through the fin array. In essence, the dies will take marginally longer to reach steady state, but will reach it eventually.
On BF5 I'm getting up to 93c with my new y530 8750 1060...
With even slight CPU undervolting there's unacceptable loss of FPS..
Was Jarrod's temp improvement actually worth me changing the paste?
Btw, this reminds me of my sisters Samsung Laptop (1st Generation i7). The CPU would normally run at 85°C and ~2.0GHz but when i removed the dust and repleced the thermal past (MX2) the temperature dropped to 65°C and the CPU clocked up to 2.8GHz under load :D

2:46 That was hilarious! People that still think that there's a "correct or perfect" way of applying thermal paste surprise me, cause It's been proven to not matter by big channels like GN and LTT (just gotta make sure that you don't apply way too little and that's It).

Thanks! Haha yeah, I don't mind if it spills out a bit, as long as it's all covered. It's almost like people think the tension from screwing down the components aren't designed such that they have appropriate contact, and that the paste will prevent proper contact and not just slide out lol

I never repaste or clean mine since i bought it brand new and i just did it. I feel very happy about being able to do it myself. I used Artic mx-4 and the temperature are better
not more not less, but you definitely should've used a spatula spread it out evenly lol. as those are fully exposed die. and should've tried LM and both the idle and on load numbers would've been significantly lower. not as much as TG advertises but still. and that would be a much more interesting thing to see!
I guess it just goes to show you really can't please everyone 😅 I used the spatula thing when I used the same paste on my Aero 15x and people said not to as well. In the end I really don't think it matters, as long as the thing is covered in paste it'll be fine.

Got around 12 degree from 96 to 84 by using mx4 in Helios 300 G3-571...

Instead i would try kryonaut and hope that would get me better result than mx-4...
And yeah that kind of cooling system are too simple, yet it's decent enough to pull off a desktop alike performance cpu & gpu...
And now the 2019 model seems getting better, while the 2019 nitro model get 1 more side grill for excessing the heat...
Can't wait to see those new devices cooling solution performance...
My hunch that it would be better, but let's wait for a reviewer to test on it...

I have been only gaming on this thing but both cpu and gpu have never gotten above 80c which is amazing if you ask me.Though gpu usage is kinda acting weird and I am not getting the fps I should get sometimes.I have the i5 1060 model with a 144hz screen.Great content Jarrod you should continue with it !

Use spread method. You'll get much better results in temperature and performance.
I have the same spec as yours except its 144hz, I gottta admit its a bit warm at stock settings but UV -0.150 makes a world of a difference and also if I place it in an area with good airflow that also reduces the temp to 3-4 degrees. It gets around 76-80 degrees while playing witcher 3 at max settings capping to 60fps. More windows optimized games like Forza Horizon 4 runs at 70 degrees at max graphics capped at 30fps.

@MUEED ANIM did you face any kind of frame drop after undervolting...i did UV my device & got almost 8-10 fps less from regular,then i got back to stock settings.
@@taufiqulislam1464 when you play for a long period, you'll have dropped fps if you don't undervolt as your cpu gets heated up. So for that stability of your fps, undervolting is recommended.
Hey Jarrod, is the paste still holding up or it has dried up, are the temperatures same? I want to know Kryonaut review after one year.
Think the i5-8300h is notorious for overheating, my younger brother's asus laptop with the same cpu, was hitting 95C+ stock fortnite extra low quality settings, took it to service 3 times with no luck - they replaced the heatsinks and repasted but to no avail. i took it into my own hands and had to undervolt and repaste the cpu and gpu to bring it down to about 85C, kyronaut with intel xtu and no more thermal throttling while gaming. He wasn't able to run fortnite even at HD low settings with a stutter before but now it's smooth with no issues. Although opening another app alongside fortnite still bumps the cpu up to hit 94C again for some reason?

Although this might be specific to this Lenovo model, if I understood correctly there seems to be virtually no difference between the undervolted and the repasted temperatures and performance. It seems like the laptop already reaches most of its full potential with undervolting, and that repasting doesn't really improve that. So undervolting seems like the best procedure that is also the least invasive and won't void your warranty if you buy your laptop from a particularly pesky shop (online or brick+mortar). Plus, even though repasting is a relatively straightforward procedure, not all laptops are easy to open up and there is a chance a user might mess things up.
Yes that's right, in my case I could still achieve full performance just by undervolting, though the paste change further helped lower temperatures. I always suggest undervolting/cooling pad as a first step, changing the paste is definitely not for everyone, sometimes it may not even change things (as I found when I did it with my Aero 15x in another video).
Best thing to do on laptops with Intel CPUs is to download ThrottleStop and disable Turbo. After that, along with a repaste, and undervolting an i5-7300Hq with -0.106 mV, from 85-90 degrees i was going down to 60-65...very rare to max. 70 degrees, and my in game performance was the same due to the fact that at high temps cpu is throttling and is doing bad than stock cpu.

You madman, you didn't disconnect the battery.. I've once shorted a laptop's gpu while I was fixing an issue with the heat sink and, guess what, I had to buy a whole new computer for that guy (About a 1199€ loss but at least got some of that money back by selling parts of the "Old" Laptop)...

Don't know if you'll see this, but I have a Y530 too, a 1060 with a i7-8750H processor, I have undervolting it to -0.140 but it makes completely no difference in temps. Is that normal?
It just means you're still throttling, but the clock speed should improve so you're getting better performance.
I have a msi laptop that I’ve had for 2 years now it’s got a i7 7700 and doing a repaste and a cleaning of dust it went from 88-95 degrees to 73-80 degrees Celsius
Repasting on laptop never does much unless it's a 2 years old laptop, right?
Tried to open my y540 took out all the screws except one screw. It got stripped so badly I couldn't do anything so I closed it back up now my temps are awful and I'm afraid of using my laptop because it throttles so badly...

Yeah I think anything with an i7 would be your best bet, depending on the application the GPU would probably also be important, so comes down to getting something with a good CPU/GPU combination, otherwise I'm not really aware what else would be good for those software suites. Personally I really like the Aero 15 range as they are good for a wide range of different tasks, and unlike most gaming laptops you still get other features that they are missing (though they do run hot under consistent load, but I have videos on that). Otherwise for something cheaper with an i7 maybe something like a Lenovo Y530/Dell G5/Acer Helios 300 🤔

At least in Europe we have a model with 8750h and a 1060, but it throttles pretty bad even with repaste and undervolt.
We've got the i7 one here too, I just cheaped out and bought the i5 for my review 😁 based on what I'm seeing here yeah not too surprised the extra two cores throttle too 😛

too much paste but it actually doesn't matter ASSUMING your surfaces are flat :P. if they arent flat youre screwed either way but should use lots

So I got myself a Y540 with the i5-9300H. When undervolted and stressed (-100mV) with AIDA or Cinebench, the Core1 and 2 ALWAYS trigger the thermal throttling at 94°C (sometimes 95°C). The other cores meanwhile sit at around 81°C to 87° C. My guess is that the original paste hasn't been spread very well. As soon as my new SSD arrives I'll tka a shot with repasting. Thanks a lot for this vid!

@@JarrodsTech so, the new SSD has been installed and the cores have new paste on them. Result: (with -125mV undervolting) the core max temp went down by 8°C while the package temp went down by a whopping 10°C. The fans won't even max out.

Thermal Grizzly Cryonaut is not recomended for laptops cause they tend to get high temperatures and TGC is made for temps under 80C , a temp that is preety normal in most gaming laptops. I actualy learned this the hard way back when i was thinking TGC is good for laptops ... its not !!! After 80C TGC will dryout , and most gaming laptops average from 75C - 90C temps so it will be a disaster after 2-3 months of gaming.

@@HasturrX Honeywell PTM 7950 !!! Its the one used by lenovo on their high end laptops , its like a thermal pad that stays solid on low temps and melts when temps get higher. I highly recomend it , i use it on my lenovo legion 5 and temps are excelent while gaming , i dont see temps past 80c no matter what i play 🙂

My Lenovo Legion y540 with i7 9750h and GTX 1660 ti was struggling from the start with thermal throttle, vent below 0.7mhz and back to 3.8mhz Being dumb I thought it was software related, bios and all that. but today I opened it up and it had so much thermal paste... ! twice the amount that it had on this video, it was almost on the entire chip, repasted and now it's fine still hot but not too hot. Didn't test temps before and after

My I7 model tends to run hot too, sometimes crashing games (I suppose). I'm gonna try cleaning my fans thoroughly first.

The stock paste looks so good, no wonder the difference before and after repasting is small. Mine has really bad stock paste, 15-20C drop in CPU temp after repaste

Also, can you do some thermal testing by lifting up the back a bit (or use cooling pad)?
FYI I apply a straight line on the CPU (slightly closer to core 0 and 2 due to potential low mounting pressure of the tripod heatsink) and cross on GPU when repasting. Works quite well.

It's on the to-do list, but so low priority I'll probably never get to it as I get sent too many laptops which I have to prioritize because I only get to borrow them for a couple of weeks before sending back. The Y540 is basically the same as the Y530 in terms of the chassis, so the process would be basically the same.
Will you try Liquid Metal? Or is that too much of a Risk?
Not rly, if you're not sure enough, you can cover all the little chips around the gpu chip with colourless nail polish just in case, and then you apply the liquid metal on both surfaces (gpu first then cooler)... U need like one 1.5 mm drop of l.m. to cover both ... And the results are awesome... 10°c + drops in temps ... Dependent on the oc :)... I repasted with L.M. so far 3 gaming laptops... Temps are great and they're running perfectly over 2 yrs now...
I don't personally have any experience with it and I'm not looking to try it at this time, but maybe sometime in the future!

Thanks, yes you can undervolt the GPU, I just don't personally find it to help much, but others claim much better results than me. Yes you can do both at the same time, GPU is done with MSI Afterburner and pressing control + F to adjust the clockspeed/voltage, there are guides on TH-cam.

Cool. Thanks for the info! I have the Y530 with i7-8750 + 1050Ti combo and after gaming on AC Unity for about 2-3 hours I got about 100 degrees Celsius on my CPU. Would be interesting to try repasting and undervolting it to see if the condition improves. On a side note, what is the temperature when you did this testing? My environment is about 30 degrees room temp so that might also be the reason it heats up relatively fast.
You should undervolt your cpu, I'm playing ac unity and my temp ranges from 72-84 degrees. Also make sure your laptop is placed in a well ventilated area with good air flow. My room temp is 27 degrees
The room temperature was 21c, I mentioned it somewhere in the video I think, somewhat cool for where I live. Let us know how it goes if you do it!

Hey jarrod what do you thinks is the best thermal paste for lenovo legion 5i ?
My Y530 has been a nightmare to be honest. The unit was unused and brand new, and after 26 recharging cycles the battery died. After that, certain demanding games such as Overwatch, Dark Souls 3 and Witcher 3 would shut the laptop off completely without even a BSOD. It was shutting down because the temperatures were rising too high. Undervolting helped somewhat, it prevented Overwatch from a forced shutdown, but not the other games. I repasted it but it didn't change anything.
Was fed up with the bs, so I sent it back to Lenovo. Let's see what happens when I get it back.
That's rough, I wonder if it was trying to draw more power than the brick could provide and without the battery to fall back to it turned off.
Think I won the silicon lottery with my new G7 17 8750. Temps really weren't that bad to begin with. Saw a couple of cores hit 100c on 15 minute stress test, but a simple .125 undervolt brought those 2 belligerent ones down to 89c max. However, with that said, I do have a tube of Grizzly Kryo that I bought, so hey, hate to see it go to waste!

Bro, I have a question, I just got this laptop for a very good offer of lenovo Mexico, the thing is that the only "issue" with the laptop is the HDD, it is a 2TB 5200 which really affect the performance of the core i7 and 16gb of RAM, do you think worth to lose warranty replacing the drive for a SSD or a M.2? because I called them and seems that once the laptop is oppened warranty is not valid :(
I'd just install an m.2 SSD and install windows to that, regardless of the warranty situation. For me personally a HDD is just unusable.

Have you ever used or tested Lenovo IdeaPad 330? Do you, prehaps know how it compares to Lenovo Y530 given both are configured with i5 and GTX 1050. Is there a significant difference in build quality or thermal design that would juistify Legion being more expensive?
I have not, only the L340. Y530 > L340 due to the reasons listed in my review of it.

As usual wonderful video. I have a small question which non metal thermal paste you suggest to apply. krayonot, Arctic mx4, Arctic silver, gc extreme or the new available CPU thermal pad made from graphite (I guess). I had acceptable results by applying mx 4 to my laptop but it doesn't meant for over clocking and I don't want to accidentally ruin by using liquid metal.
Thanks! The MX4 apparently has 8.5w/mK while Kryonaut has 12.5w/mK, so in theory has better thermal conductivity. I think Arctic silver 5 is 8.9w/mK. For comparison, Conductonaut is 73w/mK so quite a big difference with liquid metal, but yeah the higher rating for Kryonaut is why I used it.

What's the little exposed die that's above the CPU and GPU? Why didn't you put paste on it instead of the thermal pad
The chipset? I don't think it doesn't get as hot, and already had a thermal pad so I just left it as it was.

any how my main question.
1) I am strugling with my cpu's thermal. It's alway having one of the either cores hitting 93*C and thermal throttle. Sometimes all 4 at 89*C
2) At battery icon, power option.
(idle condition, cpu at 43*C)
Best Battery Life > core1-4 at ( range 0.7Ghz - 2.1Ghz ) max 65*C
Better Performance > core1-4 at ( range 0.7Ghz - 2.25Ghz) max 65*C

Is your laptop having the same problem? And its fan is noisy, sound like turbine engine pushing Airbus A330 to take off.
What is the thickness of the thermal pads? 1.5mm? Are they the same thickness as the Y540?
I didn't use thermal pads here so can't say, or measure any exisiting ones
if you raise the laptop 15 to 30 degreess off the table with a cooling pad you can drop 10C off of your system. try it.
Indeed, this is why I always test cooling pads in all my thermal testing videos.

No, it’s pretty average but every laptop design is different with custom cooling solutions so be careful...

mx4 seems to do the job for most people.
I haven't compared them, I used to use MX4 for CPU testing then bought some Kryonaut for my Aero 15x so used it again here. The MX4 apparently has 8.5w/mK while Kryonaut has 12.5w/mK, so in theory has better thermal conductivity.
MX-4 isn't recommended in laptops. Will dry out quickly due to low mounting pressure

Is 16 GB upgrade really needed if I will be only doing mostly chrome web browsing with lost of tabs open at all times with netflix, youtube, tradingview all running at the same times ? I don't really know, I've never had any problems with the Razer machines I've had, but I am a sample size of one and I only use them for a couple of weeks before sending them back and not long term. The software isn't great, just looks outdated, the new version is a bit nicer though. I don't have contact with Microsoft at the moment so I don't have any news or updates with new products.
Hi Jarrod, I wonder what's the temperature when you're gaming with Y530 after the repaste.
I didn't test gaming before or after, probably should have, but I wanted to use the worst case stress test as it applies the same load and can be more easily compared. As I don't have recent data prior to changing the paste I don't think it would help even if I tested that now.
If i want to add another RAM stick... does it have to be the same brand as the one inside or it can be different but has to be ddr4 2666v??
Different brand will likely be fine, just make sure it runs at the same timings for DDR4-2666, you can check this with software like HWInfo.
