I know its old but this model is my only laptop now and i would like to repaste it too (since i never did it in 5 years). Anyone knows if just turning of the laptop and disconnecting the battery is enough for the process? Cause i seen coments in other videos about doing extra safety stuff I hope some could help me and thank you in advance

This tells me task manager really needs an option to show the max usage of *any* part of the GPU... i.e. you'd have a "total" that'd show 100% if just CUDA is maxed out even though everything else is at idle, and if CUDA is idle but eg video encoding is maxed out then it also shows 100%... That's a more user friendly way of displaying the GPU's usage.

May I ask why you didn't removed battery plug?

I repasted my y540 with grizzly kryonaut and cleaned the fans, temps are almost the same... is there anything else I could do? CPU still throttles to 95° when gaming , gpu now maxes out at 78 but atill not what I hoped for..

thanks for this, I just replaced the thermal pads in my y740 this way. Somewhat different internals but close enough that I could follow this. I opted to use knockoff thermal pads of the same model as stock, and my load temps have come down at least 10c. Thanks!

Changed thermal paste and upgraded to 32 GB ram. Lowered GPU temps by 40°C, CPU temps by 10°C - CPU still spiking 95°C sometimes..? TYSM for the tutorial!

This Y540 laptop gets so hot and its really loud but otherwise it's a beast. I was able to run all my games no problem.

can i just use a vacuum cleaner from the outside and go over the grill?

Fair warning: Don't do this if your laptop is new. If yours is thermal throttling too often with lowish load, take it to official warranty, they probably forgot/did not fully pasted your cpu or gpu. I say this because the thermal paste lenovo used is pretty good and actually outperform MX4. This is from actual personal experience, had to open it up again and replace paste with PTM7950 pads to see any actual minor improvement compared to stock paste.

Even with the best of care, those fans and vents get clogged and gross very quickly. Why oh why don't manufacturers make access easier? That back grill could have been made to lift out independently, allowing easy access for cleaning but, no, you have to remove the entire back panel. Not for the faint-hearted and this one is quite straightforward. Still, many thanks for the video, very helpful.

What if I don't have the Cuda option in the drop down list, BUT I have cuda installed on my system?

In the newer version, lower part slides off instead of popping out, just saying so u guys dont break the little parts holding it together 😊

if you have the 17 inch model, i would suggest taking the fans out. most of the dirt was stuck in the vents. my temps dropped by more than 20 degrees.

Hello! I have problem with my y540. When I enter any game, it gets hot at charging port and it just stops charging (charging port checked at repair shop and they said charging port is not a problem). Should I try remove battery and test it without battery?

Great video, thanks for putting this up. I would suggest to anyone trying, from personal experiance, ALWAYS start with disconnecting the battery as the very 1st step. Use a plastic tool, never a metal one! :)
