  • In this video I show you how to use the BootP utility installed with RSLinx to an initial setup of an Allen Bradley Ethernet Bridge Module.

    Mine keeps saying
"socket connect failed for "ip" (connect refused)"
    Any ideas?

How will I create communicate between my laptop & my SLC 5/05? Here is the scenario in my case:
    1. When I connected ethernet with the SLC, signal LED of the module turned ON, but no device found in latest version of RSlinx.
    2. IP address of the module is unknown.
    3. I have used BOOT DHCP tool ( Version 3.05 )of rockwell using different subnet mask, while there was no any sign of Mac address of my SLC. However it showed only Mac address of my ethernet adapter whenever I connected ethernet cable to my module.
    4. I have tried using both automatic & manual IP address from IP4 configuration of my ethernet adapter properties.
    5. I have used one crossover cable between my laptop & module. No switch or router in between.

Hi. May be easier to pull out your RS232 cable and go in that way. Once communicating serial set the IP address to a known IP/subnet

While I understand what the utility is used for, it’s still not 💯 percent. The video is good, however just giving a brief explanation of what you use it for or could use it for would be quite helpful or in videos as such.

Hi Ardent. It is typically used on new devices where the IP address has not yet been assigned. BootP operates at the Layer 2 or MAC Address layer to allow you to poll connected Etherent devices by MAC address. Once located through the utility you can assign an IP address. An example device could be a 1734-AENT Point I/O communication module new out of the box with switches set to 999. Hope that helps clarify.

PLCGurus.NET It’s a bit clearer, as well explaining the Layer 2. We don’t use it often as many things we just do it in Studio 5000. But I know last we used it on a Plant Upgrade and recommissioning with my Senior Programing Engineer was to put the Ethernet/IP addresses into a bunch of Flex I/O that was now in the equipment control panel all connected via Ethernet back to main panel which was a huge upgrade from all the wiring from the panel that was to a PLC 5 system. Anyway thanks,
