BOOTP / DHCP tool from Rockwell is a necessity when it comes to working with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). However, it is a somewhat controversial tool as it still has a lot of bugs and quirks which frustrate even the most experienced programmers. In this article, we will be exploring the proper use of this tool as well as go over some of the common pitfalls for those who need to set an IP address of their PLC.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with this tool, it’s essentially an add-on for most Rockwell software packages which allows one to set the IP address of a brand new device. This tool will work with most Rockwell hardware as they all run an instance of BOOTP / DHCP out of the box. This process is necessary as it is often the only way to set an IP address in order to connect to the device.
Downloading and Installing BOOTP / DHCP Tool
The Rockwell BOOTP / DHCP tool comes as an addon-on to RSLogix 500, 5000 and Studio 5000 environments. There’s no need to seek a separate download unless it’s missing from your computer.
That being said, there have been many revisions of this software and we highly recommend that you download the latest one. Many of the bugs have been fixed over the years.
Establishing a Connection to the PLC
The main goal of BOOTP is to set the IP address of our device. Before we can do so, we need to configure a few things.
The first step is to select the proper EtherNet adapter through which our PC is connected to the PLC or any other device running BOOTP.

mad respect! my issue was that I was using a docking station (because I do not have an ethernet port on my lenovo yoga just usb ports) I was able to connect using a rs232 cable and add an IP address. I was unable to use the bootp tool because it would not find my mac address due to the docking station ( it found the docking stations mac address) So after adding an IP address I can now connect using ethernet! Thanks Vlad!

Just want add, if anyone has had an issue using the Reltek Family interface for setting IPs its most likely due to your firewall being on. I recently had this issue where no Mac address were popping up using Bootp. Hopefully this helps someone out there 👍

I have found out that if it does not disable bootp with the button you were pressing you can go to the tool tab at the top if the bootp pop up and disable it there then in the bottom left side of the box it will tell you that bootp has been disabled I don't know why its like that

How will I create communicate between my laptop & my SLC 5/05? Here is the scenario in my case:
    1. When I connected ethernet with the SLC, signal LED of the module turned ON, but no device found in latest version of RSlinx.
    2. IP address of the module is unknown.
    3. I have used BOOT DHCP tool ( Version 3.05 )of rockwell using different subnet mask, while there was no any sign of Mac address of my SLC. However it showed only Mac address of my ethernet adapter whenever I connected ethernet cable to my module.
    4. I have tried using both automatic & manual IP address from IP4 configuration of my ethernet adapter properties.
    5. I have used one crossover cable between my laptop & module. No switch or router in between.

Got a micrologix 1100 and the only thing active is http server and loses the ip every time its turned off for some reason

You need to check 2 things: 1, The BOOTP must be disabled after you set the IP. Connect to the PLC and disable it in the settings. 2. The ML1100 PLC Requires a battery to keep the settings including the IP when powered down. Make sure that the battery is fully operational; replace if needed.

It keeps saying 192.168.1.18, Unrecognized device. What do I do? I did all the steps correct. I'm on rslinx clssic and I had to configure my driver manually it just won't recognize my 1100 series B PLC.

You may not have the EDS file required for the device. You'll need to find where to download that, import it into RSLinx and it should display then.
