  • Real Life Example of using the BootP tool.
In this example I change the IP address of a 1756-ENBT (Rev 6.0) in an Allen Bradley ControlLogix chassis.
This procedure can be used for many AB devices. They usually come out of the box with DHCP enabled, and will chirp on boot up, where you can set up the Relation and continue on from there.
In this example we were lucky enough to witness Allen Bradley software doing what it does best: Work on the third try!

Einstein said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”
Well, Einstein never had to use Rockwell software. 🤣😂🤣

How do i setup the Allen Bradley controller if it is brand new and out of box?

It will need to be firmware flashed to whatever version you want it to be.
They come out of the box with BootP enabled, so you can use this tool to give them an IP Address, then go ahead and flash it. Or, you could connect to it over USB and flash it that way.
To flash it, you can try to download a program into it, and if you have the firmware for the controller it will give you an option to flash the firmware.

How will I create communicate between my laptop & my SLC 5/05? Here is the scenario in my case:
    1. When I connected ethernet with the SLC, signal LED of the module turned ON, but no device found in latest version of RSlinx.
    2. IP address of the module is unknown.
    3. I have used BOOT DHCP tool ( Version 3.05 )of rockwell using different subnet mask, while there was no any sign of Mac address of my SLC. However it showed only Mac address of my ethernet adapter whenever I connected ethernet cable to my module.
    4. I have tried using both automatic & manual IP address from IP4 configuration of my ethernet adapter properties.
    5. I have used one crossover cable between my laptop & module. No switch or router in between.

You can obtain Wireshark software to look at the ethernet traffic between your PC and the PLC, this would reveal the PLC IP Address.
You can also attempt to use a DF1 serial connection to Go Online with the PLC and find out what the IP address of the PLC is.

@@shortplcvideos5764 after connecting DF1 serial RSLinx found the module...but how will I know the ip address in this case?

You need to go online with the PLC and view the controller properties. There are multiple tabs in controller properties. Some say IP Protocol, some say Ethernet but they will show you the IP Address of the PLC.
