    Welcome to this weeks restoration project. This time i am tackling a pair of 25 year old Brembo brake calipers and hopefully restoring them back to their former glory!
    First job as usual is a bit of theatrical unboxing and a good visual inspection to make sure that the calipers are suitable for restoration and dont have any cracks in the castings. Im pleased to say they checked out well and the only issue to be found is that one of the calipers had stuck pistons hence the reason the silver has started to turn gold with the amount of heat that had built up at some point.
    So with inspection complete i started to tear the calipers apart, i was expecting to have a real fight on my hands but i was pleasantly surprised when there old Brembo's came apart surprisingly easy. The pistons were very nearly completely seized up it took 150psi of air pressure to budge them!
    Once apart i could finally pull the pistons and seals out the cylinders are in good condition with no wear at all so thats nice. I then took the caliper halves to the parts washer to remove years of brake fluid, oil and road grime. Once dried off i masked off and plugged up all threaded and delicate areas and proceeded to blast them back to bare alloy in the media blaster.
    Once back to bare metal i could mask them up properly and get them ready for primer and paint, All coatings used in this painting process are all perfectly cable of dealing with the temps and abuse associated with brake calipers so no need to flood the comment section with worries about this issue. The bare metal was prepped with an etch primer, then re-coated with a high build primer to smooth out the casting marks. while this was curing i took the old bolts and flung them into a rust eating solution to prep them for later plating.
    When the primer was dry i proceeded to wet flat them back to remove all defects and leave a nice smooth surface so the final coat will be super smooth and shiny. I gave them 3 coats of colour matched red and while that was flashing off i made up the Brembo logo stencil and cut it out of vinyl on the plotter and applied it to the calipers with mm precision then it was coated with pure white base coat de-masked and clear coated.
    While the paint was curing i moved onto the plating process and broke out the super sketchy bench grinder again :) the plating process will be explained in detail in an upcoming video so i wont go into detail here but you can see the bolts came out like new and i chose to go with silver passivate instead of the yellow as it would look weird against the red. I then polished the stainless steel parts with the buffing wheel on the pillar drill.
    Then it was simply a case of re-assembly being careful the loctite, grease and torque up all specified parts as well as being super careful not to damage the awesome finish :)
    So i hope you all enjoyed this Episode and i will be back with more content very soon.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    A new addition to my videos from now on will be a water mark and my channel name popping up in random places throughout the video as im getting rather tired of people re-uploading my content as their own i hope you guys understand.

    A little trick you can do when using a mask for lettering etc is to apply a light coat of the background colour after the mask is applied and before the lettering colour is applied. Any slight bleeds will be invisible.

      Clicking it twice is to ensure you reached the proper torque. After one click the torque may have built up and the wrench clicked because the torque was believed to have been reached. But if you go back a second time it will often tighten more. Then you know you are much closer to torque than with one click

    I'm an engineer for a brake company and design brake calipers for a living and would like to set a few things straight here. Sure these calipers might look 'restored' but every time you drive your vehicle the brakes go through a heat cycle and this thermally fatigues the metal. This means that over time the tensile strength of aluminium falls away considerably (up to as much as half of its 'new' tensile strength value). This translates to increased caliper flex under braking and, in extreme cases, could eventually result in complete failure of the caliper body.
    So whilst the calipers might have a nice layer of shiny new paint on them, the aluminium body of which they are made has aged and will be compromising performance. In race calipers this is in fact exactly how they determine whether the caliper needs changing, they measure the hardness of the aluminium which correlates with the materials tensile strength value.
    Brake calipers, like many vehicle components, are in fact a consumable part and should be changed periodically. This is why anybody who engineers brake calipers never likes the idea of people 'restoring' them, i.e. applying shiny paint. After 25 years of use I'd suggest your calipers are well past their best, perhaps even verging on being dangerous.

    • @epistte
      @epistte 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I became concerned when I realized that he was planning on reusing the hardware. That all should have been tossed out and new purchased,. The caliper bodies should have been checked instead of merely repainted.

    • @Marc-gm5cm
      @Marc-gm5cm 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      good point, I partially agree I would not like to buy those ones thinking they are new because they look so but they are not, that is clear and to be considered when you use a used parts
      but that fatigue and the tensile strength loss of the aluminum cannot be determined by how old is a caliper, can be?
      a more accurate way to determine it's condition will be for how much use has had and the way it has been treated. You would probably agree that It is not the same a caliper that comes from a daily driver/weekend toy car abused sporadically than another one that is used on the track every week.
      I know is there no way to be sure of which kind is the one restored here but I just wanted to give my point here that an old caliper doesn't always mean an abused caliper

    • @epistte
      @epistte 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Marc-gm5cm These look like offshore junk that shows up on eBay, Craigslist and Alibaba that get people killed who think that they are buying new parts.

    • @Marc-gm5cm
      @Marc-gm5cm 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@epistte you are wrong they look quite well actually.
      Also I would like to see the source that proves what you say of how much people are killed by caliper fail, could you tell us how many? have you got any numbers so far?

    • @epistte
      @epistte 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Marc-gm5cm I never said that they don't look good. They look brand new/NOS. The fact that they look good but that paint and shiny hardware may well be hiding fatal flaws. The problem is that he reused hardware that should have been replaced and the caliper bodies do not have an infinite lifespan because of both heat cycling and mechanical stress. They may well have more life left in them if the car that they are installed on is only used on the street and has not been modified for additional performance, but if they are used on a track car then all bets are off. When something does happen on the track it will catch the driver out and it's too late to do anything when a brake caliper fails at 200 KPH plus.

    It's kind of cool to see the sort of process my calipers have gone through.
    I just wish my pins came out as easy as that, mine were practically welded in place and started to bend when tapping them, had to cut them out in the end, sent them to Bigg Red in the UK to get them refurbed and have come back looking amazing and red instead of Silver/Grey
