You can tell the difference between the good nylon plates and plastic ones when you look at them and feel them. Thanks again for your awesome tips, Katie! 💜💜💜💜
Thanks for vote of confidence on Nylon plates. I ordered these Riedells and they come with Nylon plates. They were $569. I had to be assured by C.S. at Riedell that they would be just fine. I'm an adult. They even said they would be o.k. if I jumped with them, which I'm never going to do. I'm obviously new to quads from figure skating.

I have been binging your videos for a couple of weeks now. I have learned so much! thank you! I'm thinking of ordering some skates with your link. What do you think of Bont Parkstar for a beginner? Their sizing guide's wide fit seems to match my feet perfectly. So far, I have been skating at rinks, and I have dreams of getting a little dancy some day. I would love to get outside on skates, probably on bike trails and other paved trails. I have 3 concerns. Bont Parkstar comes with small wheels, which they say are better for outdoors, but from what I have heard, larger is better... can you tell me more? Am I right to think the standard 89A 58mm wheels would be good for the rink? Also, the skates come with 20 degree kingpins.... um, I have no idea what that means for skating, but I get the sense that it's different than the typical skate a beginner might buy. Does it matter? What effect does it have? The third issue is that it's reinforced with fiberglass -- does that negate the benefits of a suede boot?
The park stars are a great skate. They’re setup for park skating so the smaller hard wheels are perfect for outside park skating but also perfect for indoor rinks too. The 20 degree kingpin is for stability. Most standard kingpin are around 10 degrees but the 20 will be no problem. The plate is a great plate. The fiberglass again just makes then lighter for park skating but if you’re new to skating it may be an advantage too as it won’t feel too heavy. They’re overall a great skate. 🛼⭐️💕
what sucks is that not being in the US or UK is that there’s no skate shops that sell quad skates around me and if i wanted to order online it’ll be an extra $75 dollars for shipping :(( not to mention finding skates for wide feet is a bigger pain in the ass
It’s so hard when there are no skate shops. Where ever you order from make sure they have a good returns policy. Some shops will do distance fitting too which might be option?
This video is utterly fantastic! I only recently decided i really wanna give skating a try and was so caught up in figuring oyt which to buy when id completely skippped the "try before you buy" approach (hilarious because im actually a sample supervisor in a food production warehouse 🤣) Gonna try out dkating soon and hopwfully get some in the near future! Thanks so mucg for your incredibly informative, vbeautifully edited and humor-filled intro video! Defibutely earned a sub for sure!!!!+
thank you so much for this useful video!! I want to start roller skating and have 0 knowledge of what to look out for. I'm glad I watched this before buying something of poor quality, thank you
Thanks for the video!!! It was very useful for me, I'm thinking of learn and start to rollerskating and this was the perfect video, you have a new subscription here!!! Ps: do you recommend Impala roller for beginners? I loved it and wanna buy it, but I read the most various options about them and now I'm not sureee
Sadly although very pretty the Impala skates have had a lot of quality issues so they’re not one I’d recommend, along with foxy, c7, Angel and dollskill. Rookie, Rio, Chaya, Riedell etc are legacy brands and offer much better quality.
I never wear heels and I couldn't balance at all on heeled skates, even as a beginner! I find it really hard to find anything flat that isn't aimed at kids though.
Hi Katie! I find your videos and tips very helpful. I'm planning to buy roller skates for my 11years old daughter and I would like to know what would you recommend, she is size 1 (33.5 really)
I often find buying skates in these smaller sizes a challenge for my girls. I’d recommend trying to find secondhand skates as their feet grow so quick. It is possible to get adjustable quads but unless you’re in the US these can be pricey.
I love to skate and plan to start back. Been skating since I was 3. I can’t wait to buy my first pair. I’ve never skated outside before tho. We had a lot of skating rinks in Chicago. Might try it. Thank you! 🛼
If you’re not used to skating outside make sure to get some safety gear. Elbow, knee, wrist and a helmet. ⛑️ outside is unforgiving. Also make sure you have outdoor wheels. 78-85a and 60-65mm. I highly recommend roll-line helium. Have fun.
I nearly bought that Carlin 🥺 I was in love, and still miss it, but it was second hand and complicated to meet the seller, we both gave up 😅 Then I found a similar one of a national brand (Traxart Glitter 🇧🇷). I did check the size charts... But it was wrong. I did try it on, but anxious as I was and worried it would be too small, I took it. But it's huge, I think it fits 2 or 3 numbers bigger than what was expected 😂
Sorry if im a bit late. I went on your website to look at your recommendations and I noticed some of the skates had plastic plates. Is that because certain plastic plates are ok? I've been skating for a few months and I do have a pair of Moxi beach bunnies that i use primarily. But today in a charity shop, I found some leather skates with plastic trucks. I got them because they were £15 and I wanted the light up wheels to put on my bunnies but I would like to have them as a backup pair too. I only plan on skating fowards around my local park and indoor rink. No tricks, just skating. I'm also only 100 lbs. Will these skates I found be ok to use as backups? Thanks for taking the time to read this
Definitely not plastic trucks. They’re not safe for an adult. Plastic plates are ok but best avoided if you can. Nylon reinforced plates like sunlites are fine but not plastic plates. .
@@Skatie Awesome thank you so much! I had a feeling they wouldnt be right for me. I'll chuck them out but keep the wheels and laces for my beach bunnies
Hi there love your videos! Which skates are you wearing in this video? I have Sure gip boardwalks that cut into my shin, and I would like something with a higher tongue and your skates seem to have a longer tongue. Thanks so much!
So the skates I’m wearing here do have a long tongue compared to the boot but sadly this is because I’ve had the boot custom cut down so the tongue appears much longer than it would on a regular skate because the boot was originally much higher too. Sorry I’m not more helpful xx
Hi! Do you think it's a good idea to buy Jackson Finesse Viper Nylon Lilac Skates? I have had Rookie Bubblegums but I would like some better option for outdoors. Also I don't know which size to get, my foot length is same as yours, my Bubblegums are us size 6 but according to size chart maybe I should get Jackson Finesse in bigger size :( Sorry for long question
I’ve heard really good things about the Jackson finesse. Sizing is always so hard. I’d recommend to go mainly by the size chart for the specific skate. If it helps I skate in a 255mm boot and they’re very comfy. Let me know how you get on x
Do you know if Roces RC1 Roller Skates are good for beginners? I was finally allowed to learn how to roller skate after roller skating twice when I was younger. Sadly there aren’t any places or classes to help teach with roller skating and I just wanted to make sure these roller skates are good.
Always check the weight limit on skates as a lot of the beginner stuff has a weight limited stated. Make sure to look for metal trucks and a nylon or metal alloy plate. And have lots of fun! ⭐️⭐️
I got rainbow riders cause they run wider and they fit perfect for me. I always have problems with my shoe size being a little small and tight but next size is too big.
Hi! if you’re 20y/o and planning to teach yourself, what brands would you suggest I save up for? :0 I’ve not tried it yet but I’ve always wanted to try and I wanna teach myself,,,
Personally I always have different sets for inside and outside. Technically a 85a could be the most versatile but indoors it is really quite grippy but would be ok to learn in both outside and inside.
Hello, I was very interested in roller blading. Should I start with roller skating first? Because I wanted to get a pair of roller blades cause I saw that the were similar my pair of figure skates. I wanted to try rollerblading because I love the ice a lot. Should I go for roller skates instead?
I used to play roller derby, and have missed skating ever since. Now I live in a place where playing roller derby isn't an option but I still want to skate. I am really considering my options here, I am so used to a low boot but the high boot seems better for "leisure skating". Is a high boot the way to go if I want to just skate outside for fun?
I haven’t specifically. I mention them in a few. So helmets need to be double certified. Knee, elbow and wrist - Scabs, 187, Ennui, pro-tech, triple 8.
I bought a pair or uk7 bauer skates, they are loose everywhere, got size uk6 bauer skates and they tight around ankles but my toes touch the front slightly which is uncomfortable plus they hurt my ankles and blister them up, what should I do :(
Bauer are a hard shell skate and can be uncomfortable as you’ve described. It might also be good to look for a skate that offers half sizes as it sounds like these aren’t fitting you correctly. It’s really important to find a skate that doesn’t hurt you. That way you’ll be able to skate for longer.
Hey! I’m trying to buy my first set of skates. First I purchased Moxi Lollys, I absolutely adored them but returned them because I wasn’t sure about the fit. I have a standard size foot. I don’t mind spending money for great quality skates. I really need some direction or recommendations on choosing a skate. I’m a good skater. I’m probably considered an intermediate. Also I live in the USA. Please send help 🤣😅
i wanted to start skating and came across the rio mayhem 2 and fell in love with them bc they're really pretty and fall within my price range, would you recommend them for beginners or should I look for something else?
I recently had a skater who was learning on something similar to this and they had such trouble until upgrading to a heeled better quality boot. I’d look at something like the Rio roller signature or candy girl Carlin instead. If your budget can stretch I’d recommend Chaya Melrose
I appreciate your point but nearly every single option on your website is unavailable so I'll just have to suck it up and buy what's available in the shop :/
Are you looking in the correct country shop? There’s a Uk and US shop. I shall check the links and make sure they’re linking to in stock products too. Thank you.
That’s a good point. The size can differ per brand but my skates are Risport and for those I skate in a 255. The 250 I find a little tight on my larger foot.
Unfortunately if you size up it can mean the wheels then come under the wrong part of the foot. There are skates that are better for wider feet. I’ll pop a link to my website I have lots of recommended skates listed on there by foot width. Www.skatie.co.Uk
I need help- I’m new to skating, but have a very limited budget. I could fit into child sizes for skates, but it is a stretch. Any cheap big good skates you would recommend!
There are lots of affordable options. The candy girl Carlins are very affordable and a good quality skate. Child skates are definitely best avoided as they tend to have plastic trucks which won’t support the weight of an adult.
But.. When you buy shoes, you need to be able to passe 1 finger behind your heel. Is it the same for a roller skate ? And what about the toes ? It's okay if there'S a little space ? or it need to touche the front ? I'm afraid to hurt my toes if too tight, but, I also want them to be safe.
Great questions. So it’s said that skates should fit like socks. It’s ok if the toes graze the end of the boot but not mushed up tight that just hurts. 😣 They need to fit correctly otherwise the wheels will not be underneath your foot and it will be harder to balance. Does that help? If not, please ask as many questions as you need.
Hi! Have you ever looked at the Lmnade Skates? I see good reviews online but wondered what your thoughts were! They have some of the qualities you mentioned here :D
If they’re a light 11 year old then plastic plates are fine to start. It mainly depends on foot size. Something like the Candi girl Carlin is a good option but I believe they start around a Uk 3.
You can get some bargains on eBay just avoid the things mentioned in this video. It’s best to go to a skate shop if you can. If you head to the end section of the video. I have a piece about measuring your foot. This is really Important as skate size doesn’t correlate to street shoe size.

Help.. What should I do??
I totally understand. One option might be to check out second hand sites as Edea, Risport and roll-line skates come up secondhand quite often. Outside of that there are some great mid range skates in a better budget. Chaya Melrose are great skates solid with adjustable toe stops etc.
@@Skatie thank you so much. So in your opinion it’s better option to bay 200 e used but good Risport with Giotto plate then 230 e new Moxi Panther(?)I already had that idea with second hand. The only skating rink close to me is like 2 hours away, i've wanted to skate for like 2 or 3 years now but i'm a teen and still growing.. should i just wait?
One thing I am confused by is why are heeleys lower number bigger and why are roller skates size is reverse with the biggest numbers being smaller feet?
Unfortunately not. It would mean changing the entire plate to a higher spec. Probably easier to upgrade the entire skate to something like a Chaya Melrose
I tend to mess up all my skates by skating outside and skating hard. I like to jump all over the place, next thing i know i break the stopper or the wheels mess up. Im aware i’ll have to spend more for better quality and maybe im landing too hard or something? Any suggestions anyonee?

@@Skatie might be, i just took my luck with sure grip skates from amazon and i’m hoping they’re going to be worth the money and last😩
This video is utterly fantastic! I only recently decided i really wanna give skating a try and was so caught up in figuring oyt which to buy when id completely skippped the "try before you buy" approach (hilarious because im actually a sample supervisor in a food production warehouse 🤣)
Gonna try out dkating soon and hopwfully get some in the near future! Thanks so mucg for your incredibly informative, vbeautifully edited and humor-filled intro video! Defibutely earned a sub for sure!!!!+

This video is so helpful. Thank you! 😊 What’s your thoughts on Lmnade Throwback Skates? Cheers
They’re an ok skate to start on. Adjustable toe stop is definitely an advantage.
I live in ireland and i sometimes cant get good skates in my sports shop, but this helped me so much! Thanks alot 🖤💜💚
It can be so hard to try skates on, there are so few shops. Glad this helped you. 🛼💕⭐️
thank you so much for this useful video!! I want to start roller skating and have 0 knowledge of what to look out for. I'm glad I watched this before buying something of poor quality, thank you
So glad it helped. There are so many options and so many that aren’t safe for adults but are marketed that way anyway.
@@Skatie yikes. sad what people will do for money ):
Thanks very much - already got my own!

Thank you so much for your recommended skates!😊😊😊

I never wear heels and I couldn't balance at all on heeled skates, even as a beginner! I find it really hard to find anything flat that isn't aimed at kids though.
I’m getting rio roller milkshakes you have to size down 1 size but they’re flat and resemble sneakers, the colors are pretty too!
The Riedell Dart and R3 are nice flat skates. I have them on my site www.Skatie.co.uk
Chaya vintage are good options for what you are looking for.
5:01 wow! Really thanks for ur kind kindest helps ☺🥰

Have fun.
@@Skatie thank you!
I nearly bought that Carlin 🥺 I was in love, and still miss it, but it was second hand and complicated to meet the seller, we both gave up 😅
Then I found a similar one of a national brand (Traxart Glitter 🇧🇷). I did check the size charts... But it was wrong. I did try it on, but anxious as I was and worried it would be too small, I took it. But it's huge, I think it fits 2 or 3 numbers bigger than what was expected 😂
Oh no! How annoying. The Carlins are a great skate for the price
I'll chuck them out but keep the wheels and laces for my beach bunnies
hi! the typical €50 price tag is a bit steep for me, so i've been looking around on places like depop for second hand skates - would you recommend?
Yup, 2nd hand skates are a great idea. Look for Chaya Melrose, suregrip boardwalk, roller derby cruze.
Thank you for this detailed video

Hi there love your videos! Which skates are you wearing in this video? I have Sure gip boardwalks that cut into my shin, and I would like something with a higher tongue and your skates seem to have a longer tongue. Thanks so much!
So the skates I’m wearing here do have a long tongue compared to the boot but sadly this is because I’ve had the boot custom cut down so the tongue appears much longer than it would on a regular skate because the boot was originally much higher too. Sorry I’m not more helpful xx
Adorable explanation
Hi! Do you think it's a good idea to buy Jackson Finesse Viper Nylon Lilac Skates? I have had Rookie Bubblegums but I would like some better option for outdoors.
Also I don't know which size to get, my foot length is same as yours, my Bubblegums are us size 6 but according to size chart maybe I should get Jackson Finesse in bigger size :(
Sorry for long question
Amazing guide, thankyou!
What skates would you recommend for someone whos poor? Like my only real spending money doesn't go above like $50 a month. :c
I would say perhaps look for second hand skates. There are lots of bargains to be had on Facebook or eBay.
Is roller derby a good skate brand? I have 2 pairs of them and I do like them, but are they actually good?
do you know what wheel size is best for when you want to do jumps and pirouettes?
Hi. Smaller wheels are better for this style of skating.
Which skates do you recommend for a beginner skating outside? I am looking for white or purple. I wear size 11 in women's? Thanks
The Chaya Melrose are a very nice skate. It also depends on foot width, sure grip boardwalks are very nice but they come up on the wider side.
I got rainbow riders cause they run wider and they fit perfect for me. I always have problems with my shoe size being a little small and tight but next size is too big.
It can be so tricky when you’re between sizes. So glad you’ve found a skate which works for your foot x
Hi! if you’re 20y/o and planning to teach yourself, what brands would you suggest I save up for? :0 I’ve not tried it yet but I’ve always wanted to try and I wanna teach myself,,,
I super appreciate this video! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! ⭐️💕😎🛼🛼
I would recommend to buy some Risport skates or edea skates at a professional dealer 😁
They are my absolute favorite but not everyone wants to pay the price tag for a first pair.
@@Skatie but you'll get what you pay for. If you want some good skates you have to pay a bit
is there a good wheel for indoor and outdoor use or would you always have two different sets?
Personally I always have different sets for inside and outside. Technically a 85a could be the most versatile but indoors it is really quite grippy but would be ok to learn in both outside and inside.
Hello, I was very interested in roller blading. Should I start with roller skating first? Because I wanted to get a pair of roller blades cause I saw that the were similar my pair of figure skates. I wanted to try rollerblading because I love the ice a lot. Should I go for roller skates instead?
If you’re an ice figure skater maybe look at pic frame skates these are inline roller skates that are similar to ice skates
It’s really down to preference. If that’s what you’re used to then you make not like the feeling of a boot n your ankle. Can you try some on to test?
Not sure if you made a video about this but what helmets and pads would you recommend?
I haven’t specifically. I mention them in a few. So helmets need to be double certified.
Knee, elbow and wrist - Scabs, 187, Ennui, pro-tech, triple 8.
@@Skatie ok great! Thank you for the reply!
What’s your opinion on FoxySkates? Thank you for the informative video!
Sadly they’re not great quality, I would recommend looking into sure grip, Chaya, Riedell
Daughter Madisson 13 Years old. Stroke a size 7 Debby Coombs ❤❤❤❤
i wanted to start skating and came across the rio mayhem 2 and fell in love with them bc they're really pretty and fall within my price range, would you recommend them for beginners or should I look for something else?
I recently had a skater who was learning on something similar to this and they had such trouble until upgrading to a heeled better quality boot. I’d look at something like the Rio roller signature or candy girl Carlin instead. If your budget can stretch I’d recommend Chaya Melrose
@@Skatie the rio signature were actually my second option so i’ll get those instead, thank you for replying so quickly!!
Are there no skate shops in America?? Skate pro, skate hut everything is in uk
I think the us have an amazing array of skate shops. Department of skate, pigeon.
I appreciate your point but nearly every single option on your website is unavailable so I'll just have to suck it up and buy what's available in the shop :/
Are you looking in the correct country shop? There’s a Uk and US shop. I shall check the links and make sure they’re linking to in stock products too. Thank you.
Ooh wish I found this video a little earlier. Just got skates from Story gifted to me, but now I'm doubting if they are oké for me as a beginner 🙈😅
May I ask what size bont did you choose? My measurements a bit similar to yours but I’m torn between two sizes
For the candy girl I purchased the 5 but to be honest they are definitely too big. I’m sure I could have ordered the 4.
This was helpful but wish you would have told us the exact size you would order for the measurement of your foot.
That’s a good point. The size can differ per brand but my skates are Risport and for those I skate in a 255. The 250 I find a little tight on my larger foot.
Would you recommend sizing up in the case of having a wider foot, but the brand doesn't cater to wide vs regular or narrow?
Unfortunately if you size up it can mean the wheels then come under the wrong part of the foot. There are skates that are better for wider feet. I’ll pop a link to my website I have lots of recommended skates listed on there by foot width. Www.skatie.co.Uk
@@Skatie Gotcha, thanks so much! I really appreciate it.
This is before I’ve even watched- I literally just bought the LMNADEs in the beige
They seem to be mainly in the Uk market. You should be good to start on those. How are you getting on? The heel is so pretty.
@@Skatie good so far, ikrr, they are so comfortable and they roll really smoothly x
Is it okay if I have the double row skates. I regret buying them😢😢
Just be very careful. Lots of them have weight limits which aren’t suitable for adults.
@@Skatie it’s okay I’m only 13
I need help- I’m new to skating, but have a very limited budget.
Hi, yes, they’re an ok starter skate.
Which one is good for an 11 year old?
If they’re a light 11 year old then plastic plates are fine to start. It mainly depends on foot size. Something like the Candi girl Carlin is a good option but I believe they start around a Uk 3.
what roller skates do you wear?
I wear artistic skates. Risport boots on a roll-line plate
Does getting fitted 4 skates depend on shoe size,is ebay a good site too?
You can get some bargains on eBay just avoid the things mentioned in this video. It’s best to go to a skate shop if you can. If you head to the end section of the video. I have a piece about measuring your foot. This is really
Important as skate size doesn’t correlate to street shoe size.
hello super skater I wanted to ask you how to gain a lot of confidence when I know skating backwards .. I feel my head is spinning a bit .. then I try without the skate and all is well .. do you have any advice for me?

Help.. I fall in love with skates through your video and ménage to kill my first skates in two weeks-aluminum track- but my boots was glued and just separated:(
Now I don’t know what to buy because I don’t want to pay just for the name and nice colors jet to invest 500 in Risport sounds to much for beginners.
Problem is also sizing. 250 cm, 38 should i go exact size, down or up🤷♀️
I would really like to have big skate shop to try them all.
(Updated reply 3 times because I’m evolving:)
The only skating rink close to me is like 2 hours away, i've wanted to skate for like 2 or 3 years now but i'm a teen and still growing.. should i just wait?
Do you have a space outside that might work? If your feet are still going it’s ok to buy the skates a size bigger for growing room.
@@Skatie i can skate almost everywhere outside as there's a lot of bike lanes and even a skate park!! Ty for the advice 😁
One thing I am confused by is why are heeleys lower number bigger and why are roller skates size is reverse with the biggest numbers being smaller feet?
When it comes to skates it’s best to measure your foot in mm or inches not go by shoe size. If you use this method you’ll get a good fit
Great info💯👍👍✌️
Thank you xx
Do you think Lmnade roller skates are good?
They’re an ok skate to start on.
I feel better on a flat boot. Struggling to learn
A lot of skating comes down to personal preference and what feels more natural to you. Have lots of fun x

Plastic plates are ok to start with especially if you’re smaller. Enjoy your skating 🛼💕⭐️⭐️⭐️

Hi does it matter if your rollerskate outdoors on indoor wheels??:)
You’ll just find indoor wheels are harder so they may be a bit uncomfortable outside compared to something softer 78/85a and bigger 60-65mm
@@Skatie thank you very much 😊 love ur content btw it's so good and helpful ❤️
Went to ur website and above the skates they say wide or narrow? What do u mean by that?? Thank u for the video.
Hi. When buying skates it’s important to make sure they fit correctly. So the skates are labelled by foot width. Wide foot, narrow foot etc.
@@Skatie ok thank you so much!
Can you change the toe stop on the candi girls to an adjustable one?
Unfortunately not. It would mean changing the entire plate to a higher spec. Probably easier to upgrade the entire skate to something like a Chaya Melrose
Do you know if the lmnade skates are good?
They’re an ok skate to start with.
I tend to mess up all my skates by skating outside and skating hard. I like to jump all over the place, next thing i know i break the stopper or the wheels mess up. Im aware i’ll have to spend more for better quality and maybe im landing too hard or something? Any suggestions anyonee?
Sounds like you’re skating needs something a bit stronger. Perhaps look into something build for park skating? Bont parkstars etc
