Pretty sure I have a good idea of what kind of oil these engine can handle. And 5w30 would ruin the vanos system in them because it is too light of an oil.
Clay Crawford if you knew what you were talking about, you’d know that BMW themselves actually reverted back to a 5w40 for the s65... due in part to the bearing wear issue. You can easily run a 5w30 with MoS2 additive. You’ll get more power and better fuel economy.
I just bought a new MK7.5 GTI. I will probably also go with Pennzoil... I had good results with their dino oil in my Jeep. Yellow bottle Pennzoil is good stuff and its very cheap at walmart in the big 5 quart bottle.

Now I understand the potential value of this fancy green oil. Every time I take my Volkswagen into the stealership, they find some "small oil leak", and want to tack on an extra $1000 or more for "repairs". Strangely, I never have to add oil to my car in between oil changes, so with such a leaky engine, why is my dipstick still up to the max mark? I know, right? Elves are topping up my oil while I sleep. Today, the stealership quotes me over $5600, mostly due to parts that need replacing because they're causing "small oil leaks" and "labor charges" because they found so many apparent damn oil leaks. My garage floor is clean. My dipstick says max. The trade in value on my GTI is $4200 by the way, it has 50,000 miles on it and Volkswagen is saying it's rubbish. My dad was the original owner and he took meticulous care of it. I am so tempted to use Molygen in it this time and find these "small" leaks myself. It costs about $35. I hate hate hate these places getting away with ripping people off.

That question about the weights and how it “gets thicker” at high temp get me thinking. The oil definitely gets thinner at temp, anyone whose done an oil change could tell you this. So are the winter and operating temp weights based on a different viscosity scale? Throw 5w30 into the freezer which is well above the winter temp rating and the oil flows much slower then even room temp, and hot oil drained from the engine flows even better. Doesn’t make any sense how the weights work if both numbers are supposed to be linear on the viscosity scale
It's not that the oil gets thicker, but that the additives make the oil thinner when cold and to not thin it as much when hot. Similar to how adding salt to water increases the boiling point and also decreases the freezing point.
It doesn't get thicker at higher temp, it just behaves like a thiner oil at low temp. So it has the viscosity of a 5w oil at cold T and the viscosity of a 40w at high. But high T viscosity is still lower than low T, you just get a lower variation in viscosity.
For those of you watching who want to know about the 'fuel quality', it's the ethanol we add to our fuel. Ethanol breaks down the oil faster so, regardless of the oil you use, you shouldn't use extended oil change intervals.
You are 100% RIGHT! This is also why I drive 8 miles (one way) to the nearest Ethanol free station with all our cars... You pay a buck but you save a buck LOL + You have piece of mind.
jmayor88 no it’s not! Europe has up to 10% ethanol just like the US. It’s not the Octane rating either. While Europe doesn’t have 87 Regular, European 95 RON is a 90 PON, and European 95 RON is a 93 PON. So not higher than American Plus and Premium. It’s the because sulfure, Europe has had a 10ppm limit for a long time now. The US is switching from 30ppm to 10ppm since 2017. This higher sulfur content has caused issues to many new generation European engine imported to the US, especially for BMW’s. But I doubt that you will see the long oil drain intervals because… money. Oil changes are profitable.
It would have been great to include a category about what to do if you track your car, most of the time people struggles to know if it's ok to race with a 5w30 on tunned cars... As states, 5w30 and oem specifications for oils are for OEM cars, once you get tunned, you can throw that to the bin. People racing in the seat leon cup racer cars use castrol 10w60, but not sure if that's ok for a car that is used in the street.
It depends on the tune, if you just have a simple tune with intake and exhaust then i'd recommend using the same weight. When you start messing with turbos and superchargers and internals then you might want to, but you dont always need to. You should also get oil that is formulated for high performance applications
@@edwardkhachatryan7499 yes i guess that simple modifications are ok with the same weight oil, i usually tend to increase just a bit the grade like if it uses 5w30 i increase it to 5w40 but i use a racing oil as most of the cars i have are abused at trackdays haha

Also, how important is it to add the anti-friction additive that I saw you guys using in one of your videos?
Been using Shell Helix Ultra 0w 30 in my Golf Mk5. I honestly wouldn’t go back to 5w 30 unless it’s summer time. On start up engine noise goes real quick being a low viscosity in the winter. Plus I live in Wales, so it can get real cold here so the 0w is ideal for me.

Damnit, why do the Germans make inferior vehicles that easily break? Some say that it noise issue sounds like Bearing Rods! OMG, that's a very EXPENSIVE repair and all do this oil. My car is stock, no mods at all and regularly uses 5w-30 as factory specs but Liqui Moly only recommends 5w-40 of Molygen for BMW's. Damn i home my car is not ruined all because of this oil's grade. I will try and change the oil ASAP to what is specs for my car and see if the noise goes away!
Everything needs Syn now, Turbo, only Syn....I have used Motu, Total,Liqui Moly, all good, works fine as long as it meets VW 502, etc. 5/40 Never had ever an oil related issue, ever in about 1.5 million miles of driving, even way back pre syn. Syn changed everything, 10K between changes, never a problem, oil matters, use correct weight and if it meets mfg. spec, it works
The Right oil for your car is the spec in which your engine is spec'd for. If its VW 502 use a 502 approved oil, if its 508 use a 508 approved oil. Anything else is sales and marketing hype. Now if you have a rebuilt or a race motor build, then ask the person who built the car which oil to use. In most cases, what the engine is spec'd for is all you need.
Honestly that 502 and 504 talk was dope. So what I understand is this. Since the fuel quality is suspect in USA. Then running 93 91 89 octane with 502.00 oil is standard. European i think has 100 98 95 octane to their 504.00 oil. Can someone say I'm correct on this. Great video actually. Sucks that Zarcaro left ecs. Cool dude
Project Farm did a motor oil extensive testing on about 20 popular brands and sadly Liqui Moly was 3rd to last in line and failed against the cheapest oils out there! Amazon freakin' Basic and Walmart's Super Tech motor oil BEAT Liqui Moly in the first round! How in hell could that be??? The winners of the oil testing was no other than AMSOIL Signature 💯% Synthetic oil and second place was Pennzoil Ultra Platinum motor oil!!! Goodbye Liqui Moly, hello Pennzoil Ultra for my BMW 5 M-Sport! The cleaning power of Pennzoil is in another level unmatched! Now i know why BMW switch from Castrol to Pennzoil as their now OEM synthetic motor oil!!!
My wife leased a 2015 VW Jetta SEL with a 1.8L turbocharged engine...I changed the oil every 5,000 miles using Mobil 1 5W-40 European formula...the engine ran great...quite as a 'church mouse'...Liqui Moli is great oil...I believe the Germans were the first to develop a hydrogenation process for producing synthetic oil during WW2.
The statement about fuel quality being higher, in Europe, is valid only for Diesel fuel! Gasoline has the same quality standarts, and its way cheaper in the US.
UPDATE 2022: US gasoline is now Low Sulphur 10ppm standard same as Europe. Thus PENNZOIL is no longer shipping "5W-30 EURO" (BMW LL01) and only shipping "5W-30 EURO L" (BMW LL04).
I see that you do not recommend the addition of ceratec in the molygen due to its already perfectly balanced package, which makes total sense. Now my question, in a liqui moly synthoil High Tech that is the 100% synthetic range but without an anti-friction additive package, would the addition of cratec from liqui moly be suitable and even recommended there?
Based on what i am hearing is engine oil is thinner when its cold and thicker when its hot? That doesn't sound right. Regular petroleum oil when cold is thicker, oil when warn is thinner. Engine oil as additives in the oil to keep a CONSISTENT lubrication from the moment of the cold start - to the operating temperature of the motor. If the oil is to thin and it wont lubricate. You might as well run water. To think and the oil doesn't flow and there isn't enough lubrication. The first number on the bottle is describing the coldest temperature (check the bottle on the back it will tell you how cold the the oil is rated for before the oil gets to thick) at which the oil will flow without altering the viscosity to much (it dose get a little thicker when cold but it is with in the tolerances of the motor to be thinker, but not by much). the oil has to maintain that weight of the oil that is stated my the manufacture or it will start to wear the engine prematurely. But I could be wrong.
The flow is generally rated in cst or centistokes. Don't confuse its actual flow rating with the viscosity range. This oil does indeed have a lower cst rating at 100 Celsius vs 40 Celsius
"Based on what i am hearing is engine oil is thinner when its cold and thicker when its hot? " - That is not what you heard, because that is not what he said... you could have spared yourself a lot of typing... ;)
You answered the question I wanted to know. I'm in Australia and my car a 1.4 TSI says 502 or 504. The price difference is double. Also very confusing because I'm on a 15000 km interval but they dealers use 504 long life for some reason, when they could just use 502 since you have to change the old more frequently anyway. Thanks guys. I'll give the 502 a go next time since I do my own oil changes now.

@@sahangartal9049 The best you can afford. "Leichtlauf" is a very low viscosity oil and it's 100% synthetic. Now, because your car has some mileage on it (I noticed, those are km... LOL), I would recommend a compression test; you can do it yourself with an inexpensive tool from HFT. It might as well be that the compression will "ask" for a higher viscosity and in this case I would avoid anything under W10 on the cold end. For the "warm end", you can go as high as you want or afford. In any case, using the best oil, will give you a longer engine life. Also don't cheap-out on filters; very important!!! I noticed that the genuine filters at the dealership are priced just the same, if not lower than the parts store charge... (I mean, I only have experience with MB and VW). Good luck!

I think Steffen’s info about US fuel standards was a bit out of date. In 2014, EPA mandated Tier 3 ultra low sulfur gasoline (10 ppm or less) starting in 2017. That puts the US in line with EU requirements, which should mean the VW 504.00 oil spec should be followed in both places. Not that there is anything wrong with 502 if the manufacturer approves it, but 504 should in theory mean better engine cleanliness and lower emissions.
If the EURO manufacturer specifications are the most stringent, then people should buy OIL that meets the spec, tested and are approved. The liqui-moly stuff sounds like expensive german snake oil just Amsoil. Given that Castrol Edge 0W40 A3/B4 meets (API SN/CF, ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4, Meets Ford WSS-M2C937-A, BMW LL-01, Mercedes Benz 229.5 and 229.3, Porsche A40, VW 505 00 and 502 00) and Mobil 1 FS 0W40 meets pretty much the above except for BMW LL-01. Should'nt people be heading to their local Walmart instead and getting a 5 quart jug for less than 30$ instead of this expensive stuff? Noticed that some of these oils say they meet the manufacturer specs, yet aren't in the manufactures approval list (and should be avoided from a warranty perspective).
So they say climate has no bearing on oil, then later in the video they say you can choose several viscosity’s based on climate. I love Liquimoly and run it in all 3 of my BMW’s but c’mon guys, which is it?
US cars would do better with high SAP oils due to less quality fuels, but in Europe we're told high SAPS screw with your catalyst converter, a very expensive part.

I'm counting on the "moly" additive to keep my S65 rod bearings in good shape!
Use 5w30 full synthetic with the MoS2 additive... and drive easy when the engine is cold... and you won’t have any problems with the bearings.
Marek Sumguy way too low of weight for the vanos system. I wouldn’t go any lower than a 5w 50....
Clay Crawford you don’t know what you’re talking about.
Marek Sumguy lmao and you do? I’ve never herd of running an s65 on 5w30. I own 2 M3’s an 2005 interlagos blue competition, and a 2011 alpine white m3.
My 2 Volvos and 2 Volkswagens recommend Castrol, I use Liqui Moly.

LiquiMoly for my N52 only! Love it
For myself, I will stick with Pennzoil 5w-40 platinum Euro. The reason is the fantastic Blackstone oil analysis that I have gotten on my VW MK7.

VERY PROFESSIONAL INFO, EVEN AUTOMOTIVE MECHANICS MAY NOT KNOW 👍
That question about the weights and how it “gets thicker” at high temp get me thinking.
UOA V VOA = 100% Sciences or oil can breakdown faster from diluted by gas into your crankcase
Do you suggest a specific oil to counter ethanols effects? I have 2012 bmw n20 motor. Any feedback i greatly appreciate
thanks! you solved my question!
jmayor88 no it’s not!

I’m wondering about the whole thing with the 10 W 60 as a lot of people complain that it’s too thick. I live in Southern California, it doesn’t get very cold here. Would you still recommend that? Also, how important is it to add the anti-friction additive that I saw you guys using in one of your videos?
Been using Shell Helix Ultra 0w 30 in my Golf Mk5. I honestly wouldn’t go back to 5w 30 unless it’s summer time. On start up engine noise goes real quick being a low viscosity in the winter. Plus I live in Wales, so it can get real cold here so the 0w is ideal for me.

Im between amazon basics liqui moly and mobil 1 for my bmw f10
Ri2nonerok Yeah put Amazon Oil because they use it in race cars. Come on dude Liqui Moly all the way. NO Mobile One is approved for BMWs
Cool dude
They have a different octane rating system in Europe, it's not apples to apples. It's essentially the same X/Y/Z.
BMW has a new rating (does not supersede other rating). I believe it’s LL-017. Liqui Moly also has Top Tech 6600 now.
I believe European formula Mobil 1 is 0w40

Just bought 10qts of Molygen from you guys! Thanks for all the help.
Basically, just move to Central Europe..

Michael Broski lol. Castrol is really poor quality oil.
@@wawbagel I agree but Castrol 10w60 is very different than any other Castrol
Skeptical Shooter so flow-rate isnt linear to viscosity?

You answered the question I wanted to know. I'm in Australia and my car a 1.4 TSI says 502 or 504. The price difference is double. Also very confusing because I'm on a 15000 km interval but they dealers use 504 long life for some reason, when they could just use 502 since you have to change the old more frequently anyway.

It's very expensive at the parts counter. All the parts stores do not have oil that meets BMW spec. Liqui Moli 6600, which meets the spec in a 0w20 is not available and the relevant oil at Rockauto is perennially out of stock. I found Pennzoil Euro L 5W30 with BMW LL 04 spec. Will the weight cause any issues, i assume that since it meets LL spec that i am good for the summer and will hope to find 0w20 for the winter, since i have a 530e and the oil will tend to be on the cold side during most winter driving. Any comments?
