      I have loved watching all your tests. Seems like a strange thing to say now that I have typed it haha. I recently had a new engine built for my race car with forged internals. The machine shop who built my engine requires me to use Motul engine oil. I have always used amsoil. I was really hoping you could do a test with all the oils generally used for racing. Amsoil Signature, Liqui Molly, Motul, Royal Purple and then maybe verus Amazon basics full synthetic.

      The 4200 is rated for Dexos2 (dexos blue) and other Low Sap standards which prioritize Catalytic Health over all other metrics.
      It's a really strict standard that the AmznBasic Dexos1 doesn't meet.

    A good idea for another oil test would be to use the lubricity tester on the oil again after it has been cooked to see if it still provides enough protection after being exposed to high temperatures

    • @niccadoodles
      @niccadoodles 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      That won't necessarily be true. Different oils have different breakdown and break in points. There is wide range of disparity between new viscosity and after 800 miles of use. Shoutout to blackstone labs.
      There used to be a great forum that posted great analysis, unfortunately they were bought out by an oil company (go figure)

    I really enjoy watching your videos. But the testing methods in this one left me with some questions. How can you compare Oils without testing their lubrication at an actual engine temperatures? Maintaining lubrication at hight temp for an extended period of time is the MOST critical property of any engine oil. It's what makes an engine oil an engine oil.
    Cold start viscosity is all fine and dandy, but according to the tests in your video, you might as well use sunflower seed oil.

Both are superior to Mobil 1 in terms of real world burn off in the summer and have less change in viscosity. Plus both provide more power and less noise at first fill and after 3500 miles. Used all in my 1991 160,000mi CRX, 2003 187,000mi Xterra, and 2003 91,000mi G35 (Mobil 1 junk never touched that car). Bring everthing into a walk in freezer? Bring everthing into a grocery store's upright Hobart bakery rack oven. Um. No. What WOULD be good is to test the lubricity AFTER the heat cycle or possibly even after the heat cycle and the re-freeze. Molybdenum can cause problems in an internal combustion engine.
      For break in (camshafts) it is OK. But continuous use can harm the engine as molybdenum does not tolerate engine temperatures.

I actually used motor flush religiously in my 97 nissan altima for years and it didn't hurt anything mechanical anyways. In the end my rear main oil seal started leaking badly and the car wasn't worth much so I junked it. I actually read years later that the motor flush might have caused the oil leak by removing the crud that kept the seal from leaking.

    As a chemist for a major oil refiner, you realize your tests have no validity with regards to oil quality. Oil chemistry is designed for conditions such as extreme pressure, shear strength and adhesion. Oil which flows faster down a channel is in fact not what you want to happen. Viewers should not be mislead by unorthodox testing methods.

      So the amount of time is takes oil to reach all areas inside the engine that need lubrication is not valid? If that is so, all engines would run of the same viscosity oil? You want those cold dry start ups to be as damaging as possible because oil flow is not important.

    • @maleman5610
      @maleman5610 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@4wdoverlandafrica221
      Flow is important but by no means used to determine quality of a product designed for lubrication and cooling. Adhesion is a critical factor to ensure all internal engine parts retain a very thin surface layer of oil when not in motion. Without this to provide lubrication upon cold start, serious damage would occur very quickly to an engine.
