Hi, Scotty I have a few questions I have a 97 Chevy S 10 manual transmission 2.2 engine first question is when I use the right turn signal both come on the back , I've replaced the multi function switch, I checked both receptacles individually still the same thing, 2 second one when I apply the brake with truck off the dash lights flash and also the fuel pump is kicking off on lol this at the same time 🤣🤣 help please!
I clicked on this for the oil 'warning', I thought I was going to learn something instead, I had to suffer through 10 minutes of 'restless arm syndrome'.
Funny story. Watching a Scotty video a few weeks or so ago and the question of a rather new car came up saying the dealership wanted to change the brake fluid already. I laughed at the gall of the dealership trying to get money for an unneeded service. Now here's my story. This Saturday, my GF brings her 2020 Civic into the dealership for an oil change. They do it for free as part of the agreement to buy. I followed her in my car and in the time it took me to park outside and walk into the service area, they were already trying to charge her to replace the brake fluid because it was dirty she rattled off some B code. The car has 11000 miles on it. $110.00 they were trying to charge. I walked in and my GF told me what they were trying to do. I looked at the now nervous service lady and said "Really?" She started again how the car was showing that code. I retorted with that it was the pre-programmed service required light and for her to show me this code. She didn't even try but still insisted that the brake fluid was dirty and needed to be cleaned. So we popped the hood, I got my flashlight out that I EDC, popped the top of the reservoir and shined light on the cleanest brake fluid there is in a car. At this time I asked her if she wanted to try another one or just do the oil change like we asked in the first place. She backpedaled quick and didn't even try to upsell us wiper blades. I'm a nice guy, but it pisses me off too when dealerships try to prey on others. Hall Honda of Elizabeth City, NC...bite me.
Good for you. I really get pi$$ed off when businesses try that on me. My daughter, back in the day, took her 1st car to a *STEALERSHIP* & they tried to sell her $100s of parts she didn't even need. From that day on, I took it to my mechanic & it never happened again.😲😲😲
Stevenson Hyundai, and Lejeune Honda, in Jacksonville, N.C., both tried their best to rip me off on 2 different cars. They are trained to scam the customer.
Actually, if it was my car I would just test the brake fluid or go ahead and change it myself. Some manufacturers recommend changing it every two years.
True, but I can recommend better physics channels or better economics channels, or better pets channels the him. I like that. Everyone has a purpose and this us his. He is lucky to have found it. Most do not
Scotty is amazing for his knowledge of cars and everything associated with the such as, a good or a bad vehicle, what years of vehicles are better, what oil is best for your car, and all maitenance. He's number one for knowledge of all cars. God bless you, Scotty.
Because of your Infinity g37 sedan review my father at 61 demands me to get rid of my 2009 Infinity g37x sedan.. he really likes you and damnds me to follow your every video and your every word. So now I'm selling my G37x sedan with 102k miles, because of him. Thank you for helping my dad get his way.
My mother still has a 1999 Toyota Sienna, and it's a great car that still has its original motor and transmission with 290,000 miles. Runs like a champ.
Hey Scotty, I’m a long time Aussie fan who drives a 2006 Mazda 3 SP23, with a 2.3 litre engine and five speed manual transmission. I’m only the second owner and the one before me was a really anal mechanic, so it was very well looked after. I have kept up with the services religiously and the car has now has 378 thousand kilometres (nearly 235k miles) on the odometer) it runs just as well as it ever has since I bought it and the only repairs I have had to make are a new clutch and new front suspension struts. I reckong Mazdas make damn good cars and I have no desire to ever own anything European, because they cost WAY too much to fix and maintain. Love your channel mate!
Scotty I couldn't agree with you more about BMW's. You as usual are spot on. My X wife wanted a BMW X3. Im a diagnostic tech for 45 years now and owned my own shop for the past 17 years. I told my X if she buys a BMX I will never work on it. We bought a Lexus RX350. A great car. Everything you say about BMW trash is 100% spot on.
Scotty I have a neighbor, young couple with two kids and a dog. They bought a 2018 Silverado that had 40 plus thousand miles on it. Nice looking truck and it’s for the wife and mom to have something dependable and it wasn’t cheap but there is something wrong with the transmission and they keep taking it back and they say there is nothing wrong with it. They only have till October for the warranty, that’s 3 months from now. Her husband is not a mechanic by trade but knows enough to work on his own truck and he is pretty handy at most things. When the truck is going up hill the truck acts crazy like it’s going in and out of gear making noise and not acting right. How do you get a Chevy dealership to honor their warranty. October is going to come and go soon. They want to trade it in but now they’re saying it’s not worth near what they paid. They only had the truck for about a year maybe a little longer. Thanks my friend. Been a fan of you for ever. My wife who passed away dec. of 21 is the one that told me about your channel. She bought her 2013 Lexus because of you. And I have to say I’m driving it now and was going to sell it but I decided to keep it. Really is a good car. Thanks again. Peace from pennsyltucky. ✌️👍🇺🇸
ScottyKilmer - Your wisdom over the decades has fully matured and is now right on target! I recall back in 1971, watching your 1st video review on the brand new imported 1972 Toyota 4x4 FJ via 8mm home video tapes. Scotty claimed the 72' FJ was a cheap tin can and would never compete with the reliability & performance of the NEW Jeep CJ Renegade and definitely not against the FORD BRONCO! Scotty predicted cheap Toyota's would never survive the American Auto Market past 1975! Boy, was he wrong! I still see those old FJ' running around! Any JEEP CJ's? Nope! But, my grandpa (WW2 vet) agreed with Scotty, the young mechanic in 71'! He didn't want those foreign Japanese cars nowhere near the land of 'MERICA', land of the free & brave! Well, 50 years later, that's all I own! My family owns nothing but Toyotar's. We currently drive a 2005 Avalon and a 2007 FJ Cruiser. We've owned a Camry, Tacoma & Tundra. Most reliable vehicles ever! RIP - Chevy, Ford, and Dodge! POS's! Also, don't miss his video from the seventies, regarding the everlasting 8-Track tape player. You can't always be right about everything! But Scotty has come a long way since then!
Oil isn't the only issue, it's better to wait 10 to 180 seconds for the engine to go from open-loop combustion to closed-loop combustion. During open-loop the fuel/air ratio may be far from ideal depending on fuel quality, age of engine, etc., often very rich and trying to drive on rich combustion can lead to oil contamination. The engine will run best when in closed-loop, meaning no stalling, hesitation, etc.
Well, what can i say... After 36years i Dieselenginedevelopment your advices are quite accurate. EGR are systematic suicide for Dieselengines NO MATTER of manufacturer. It is important to follow the manufacturer's recommendation with regard to viscosity/density. Today's EGR-Diesels are so dirty that changing more often than the manufacturer indicates extends the life of the engine and DPF.
My 2019 Skoda Scala (1.6tdi, manual) was an incredible car. Mileage was stellar (about 750 actual miles per fillup if driven conservatively) and it would still go 140mph, although it took awhile to get there. Tdi was a dream to drive with a manual, so easy to get moving from a start with that torque. The US really gets screwed on what we get for cars. Bought it two years old for $16000 (equivalent), had front and rear parking sensors, electric defrosting windshield, folding side mirrors, heated seats and steering wheel, good sized touch screen which was great for Android auto, multiple usb-c ports, remote keyless/touch entry, keyless ignition, adjustable depth trunk floor, backup camera, and some funky cool stuff like a washer fluid filler with integrated funnel, umbrella hidden in drivers door, and a windshield scraper in the gas door. My mechanic in Germany said the tdis are great, stay away from the gas engines. Like the US gets that option. Buddies gas VW has already had issues due to DI. Miss that car a lot. It was an amazing vehicle. Cant touch any comparably equipped vehicle in the US for anything close to that price, even if ignoring the diesel advantage.
I'm never going to watch his videos again. Didn't find what he was supposed to discuss that was on the thumb nail. Also I found the Car Care Nuts channel which I really like.
Idk if it’s still there but the most honest and reliable mechanic service I experienced was at a Midas auto shop in Clarksville TN. Super friendly , humble and didn’t overcharge
Some cars use very light weight oil because the engine has extremely tight tolerances. It has nothing to do with getting oil to the top of the engine faster.
We need to hold manufacturers accountable for deliberately making inferior vehicles.Thank you for informing people on what evils to avoid, hurt them in their pockets until they change their ways.
Ny nephew bought a used Sienna van. Looked and drove great. Did not smoke. Burned oil 300 miles to a quart. Toyotas are usually good but watch out for oil burners.
Skoda is a Czech automobile company which is now owned by Volkswagen... Romania has the Dacia Logan brand of cars, which is owned by the French car company Renault...🇷🇴
You Mr Scotty are a hand waving, loud talking man with more honest straight talking person that probably offends people - Milton here, you do a great job. I myself am very direct and this does offend. Don’t bother me none - Mr Scotty, keep at it!
I believe that oil pumps are positive displacement, so that regardless of the oil weight, the same volume would be pumped per revolution. Meaning it wouldn't take thicker oil longer to get to the top of the engine, just that it would take more engine power. , so the eff
Would it damage the oil pump in the long run by adding resistance to the flow of oil around the engine, particularly on cold starts when the oil is more viscous?
@Noah Katz I saw a nerd who knew everything put the wrong viscosity into the wrong machine and when it got hot it blew oil all over a guy. It's not about the pump it's about all the bits after the pump, get the right weight and spec for the application. And if you're printing money in a condo. Good, stay there.
Good advice, don't go from Toyota to BMW, unless you've got coin to spend endlessly. Always put the recommended oil weight in your vehicle, unless you have an old GM 307 or the like, if you have overhead cams that will ruin things faster than anything.
Anyone who has ever looked inside an engine will clearly see no surface is ever 'dry of oil' before you start it... There's oil all over the inside your engine before you start it, even on the bearings and in the piston rings.
to the ram owner, when i got my charger i had an annoying noise nobody diagnosed correctly, i even laughed at one kid who wanted to replace my steering column for like 2 gran lol, anyway turned out i found a bad strut was the cause....and thanks scotty for all your advice i watch you everyday
My Grandmother Ordered a Special Non Hybrid Ford Escape in 2009. I spoke with the dealership, he told me when the batteries go dead? So does your car! It will not work because the electric part of the engine is connected to the gas engine, if that makes sense Which means it will basically lock up your Gas Engine preventing it from driving. The batteries are only warrantied for a few years also. That's why we stayed away from Hybrids!
In his defense he did say not to use the thicker oil and only use what your car calls for, 0/20 or 0/16 moves to the upper top end faster than thicker oil.
Got a 2015 dodge dart. Changed radio myself. Watch youtube video and go to work. I'm not a mechanic but I can follow step by step instructions. 100 new radio and tools included 3-4 hours work.
Sorry but what sane person would even consider buying an old BMW with a coolant leak? As John McEnroe used to say, "you cannot be serious." Buy it by all means if you relish the thought of your stress levels going up into the stratosphere and your bank balance going down to hades. Yes you can always say "it was only a small leak."
The 525i is actually a reliable car. M54 B25 engine. The advice should be to ask if it overheated for if it did, then not good. Not because it’s bmw but it applies to any car.
To the guy from Nashville with the clunk noise. Check your spare tire and confirm the tire is tight. If it isn't, it swings around and makes a clunk sound.
Another car repair channel fixed a clunking Ram pickup recently by cleaning out the old dried grease from the driveshaft splines and putting fresh grease in.
A thicker oil will leave a thicker MOFT between parts. Also, the oil pathways in an engine fill via positive displacement of the oil pump, meaning oil flows just as fast regardless of viscosity. Thinner oil is for CAFE goals, not engine protection.
In Canada they also screw you over on THE WARRANTY. How you wonder? They only Warranty the car for 100,000 Kilometers. The same car in the US has a 100,000 Mile Warranty. This is a difference of almost 38,000 miles. When my car developed a wiring issue in the trunk because of a design flaw that pinched the wiring every time it was opened, they told me my trunk had too many Kilometers on it.
If he doesn't see your question, my experience tells me it will result in increased exhaust smoke which could lead to injectors becoming dirty (hard starting). I've noticed that certain fuel oils cause black smoke more than other types. I'm guessing that will result in carbon deposits.
I decided to use synthetic high mileage oil in my 20 yr old Camry. So far, it's been great. Now colder weather coming, and before I go anywhere, I check the oil level, then if it full, I start her up and let it sit for about 5 minutes. This way, the oil heats up and it will reach the top. Then I go. But not in summer, summer it heats up fast.
It might just be me but I have a 1995 Ford Aerostar that I bought for $400 bucks with 158,000 miles on it, now has 200,000 and it runs great. I also bought it from a mechanic so that might be why its lasted so long. Had it 6 years now.
My 2002 Lexus ES300 is always parked in my garage and it doesn’t get below 40 deg. F. I always let it run for about a minute then accelerate slowly until I get up to normal temp.
Chevy Astro van or a GMC Safari would be a great minivan to turn into a camper. I have owned both for work vehicles and they are built like tanks. Toyota Sienna towing max is 3500 pounds but the Astro and Safari towing max is 4700 to 5000 pounds.
Scoda’s are great cars man I own one overseas And like Scotty said parts, available everywhere in there and every mechanic knows how to fix them fuel efficient and they have diesel options
I bet you're right about it being that guys wheel bearing. I usually have them drive real slow in a parking lot as i walk around the car and check each wheel. Youll find the source or the popping/clunking pretty fast.
I have a 76, 86, 98 gm 350’s all high mileage, can’t get them better than those old trucks. Have an 09 duramax and 0 issues. You might be wrong on the GM hate
I have been doing this for years on multiple cars. If oil is 5 20. I use 0 20. Half 10 30 high mileage oil this works on quick starts n go on hot or cold days than usual also long drives
"Scotty, im thinking about buying a BMW Wagon with 179,000 miles, what should I do to make it last 500,000 miles?" Scotty: "Yeah Send it up in space to Mars 500,000 miles away... Endless money pits"... 🤣😂🤣 Literally was laughing so hard I was crying 😂... Take SCOTTYS ADVICE! DON'T BUY IT!!!
Why don’t automakers put in an electric oil pump? Comes on for 5 seconds before engine turnover. Turns off when starter solenoid is engaged. I did it on my Jeep and my Volvo. 315,000 miles on my Volvo.
I had a customer with an older civic hybrid. The hybrid battery was totally dead, it would charge while driving but as soon as you shut it down, the charge was gone. The gas engine ran all the time and it operated as a standard internal.combustion engine vehicle. All sorts of lights and trouble codes but they drove it for years that way
Love your videos Scotty but what was the oil tip? Don't buy an oil other than that recommended for your car? Where is the part about don't buy an oil "that says this"?
Thin oil is only for 2 things Fuel economy and extreme cold starting if you don't live in a cold climate, don't use the thinner oil recommended, your sacrificing engine protection for fuel economy..
Scotty, thanks for all your effort in producing honest, informative, easy to understand and useful videos. I have learned a lot & your videos are most appreciated.🤗 Help me out here your making me real nervous about buying an Odyssey. Needed a van so I did my research & it was either Toyota or Honda. At the start of the pandemic I found a private seller close by with '09 Odyssey 156k $4700. Now its making some strange noises, only gets 10mpg & it hard to start sometimes. I'm at a loss İ don't trust the mechanics or dealer. How do you vet mechanics? Trany fluid needs help how do I get a mechanic to replace just a quart or 2 ?? Anyway you state in this video & others that Honda engines & tranys are problematic but I have also seen you praise them. Can you please clarify this? I'm quite concerned as I must make this one last as long as possible.
@@RosalineIvy Thanks for info. Found 2 videos duplicating the constant noise ( I can't find words to describe it buts it's distinct). Noise constant except when in neutral or park. Go figure. Anyhow a Scotty video I stumbled across has exact noise & claims it is exclusive to a/c compressor failing, well I don't use a/c so... I did find another video stating that noise is one of only 3 things. It's gotta be the water pump ... Then we have the 2 bad oil changes plus the worsening leaks, a lot of exterior engine sludge with white sparkles (only detectable in photographs ) and a pretty fluorescent green tint So begins the chain of events resulting in my being taken advantage of by local mechanic to the tune of $5660 and on/off carless for over 2 mos. Car taken back to shop 5 times but I've been left with a host of new questions, concerns/issues, noises and other repairs/maintenance still to be done. In search of a competent, trustworthy, honest mechanic that wil l hear what I have to say and advise. Am I hallucinating thinking I'll ever find such a thing?? My apologies for being so long-winded. After literally more than 100 hrs of you tube vids, reading articles, reviews, comments, recalls etc... in the past 2.5 months & learning about the interference engine ( Outlaw them or mandate chains no vvv or aftermarket, the mind-boggling amount of solenoid, valves, switches, relays.....Yada Yada yada I have sworn off any vehicles newer than 1998 . Just give me my old 4 on the floor & fifth under the seat and I'm a happy camper😊.
I live near Corbin Ky can I bring you a Lincoln Navigator that has a bunch of issues after the Cadillac converters we’re stolen and I put straight pipes back on… I understand the check engine light will stay on but apparently it’s more issues than that but it wasn’t having problems before the theft!! My granddaughter and I watch your videos all the time & we appreciate all your help and advice!!!!!
@9:46 Scotty....Skoda have an excellent reputation here in Europe....they are super popular and are known for reliability. Yes they use almost all VW parts but seem to be put together better than the VWs in the Czechoslovakian factory. They consistently perform much better than VW cars in Reliability surveys and anecdotally this is also true.
Scotty I bought a 97 dodge avenger with 26,000 miles on it. People warned me that it sat, but this car has treated me great! Now at 43,000 it’s given me no problems. What’s your advice on getting a car to last a long time and what are the problems with a car sitting for some time, with low mileage.
Well, I'm glad the pilot doesn't have those engine and tranny problems the Odysseys have. My 2010 Pilot is at 195k miles, burns and leaks nothing and runs perfect. Transmission shifts like it's brand new. I've done all the fluid changes as suggested or sooner.
All I got was to not put in engine oil that the engine wasn't designed for. Therefore, if your owners manual states use 5-30w oil, don't think you're doing the engine favors by putting in 50w oil. I was actually told once they use 50w oil in all his vehicles because the engine leaks less with it. Scotty is saying don't do that because the oil is not lubricating the engine quickly enough when you start it up and will experience more wear on the engine from initial start up.
I believed that marketing about silicone wipers - however, in the Southwestern desert of the U.S. - they only lasted 1-2 months longer than the less expensive regular wipers . . . I was so disappointed! Those silicone wipers aren't worth the $$ in my region of the U.S. I appreciate all of your other videos Scotty, I've been watching your channels for years - but I have to point out this one discrepancy, based on personal experience! Cheers man!
@@rwefree9469 Leaving streaks on the glass by not cleaning evenly. I think Justinian Yi is right about keeping the original frames - that makes sense to me, but when I bought mine, I couldn't find just the inserts, so I bought them with the frames. I have a 2005 vehicle.
@@mssixty3426 I haven’t heard about many people doing this but wiper blades should be cleaned once in awhile. They pick up a lot of grime from roads. Use a hot soapy rag and clean the blades. It can make them work like new.
Always prime my engines before starting if they been sitting for 24+ hours. But then again it’s based off companies now days you can’t prime all of them unfortunately anymore.
Man, it is tiring defending the Dodge Caravan but i stand by what I say. All you have to do is follow the proper main't intervals outlined in the manual. Keep the oil clean, keep the ATF +4 clean in the 65TE tranny, and opt for a few aftermarket parts to replace a few badly designed parts like the plastic fuel rail and the plastic oil cooler. Drive it cool and don't goose the hell out of it and you'll get 400,000+ miles like I did. Not a bad vehicle at all for me but I Ihad to do my part. Thanks
Not sure about the thinner oil is better for the engine part. The same BMW is specified for heavier oil in Europe than in the US. I think CAFE is the only reason.

Two things we don't agree on. Do warm the engine a little and a turbo is a hand grenade on whatever engine you put it on. 35 year line mechanic here.
And the oil not to buy is???????
Just what same conclusion I ask
@@RobertBrown-cz9qz the oil that is not recommended for your vehicle.....duh.

Love your work Scotty! Keep it up!
We need a good manufacturer and everyone support them. It’s the only way to really punish, to shift market shares.
Ny nephew bought a used Sienna van. Looked and drove great. Did not smoke. Burned oil 300 miles to a quart. Toyotas are usually good but watch out for oil burners.
I am driving my 94 Celica to Clarksville this weekend. Hope you are doing well Scotty! ❤
Email him! He'd love to see it.
If it were anything but a Celica I would suggest taking the last train. I have owned 4 and they never let me down. Bonus? Fun to drive!

Umm, so what engine oil shouldn't I buy? I watched the entire video and that answer was never addressed.
i THINK it was the 30 second part where he told you to use the viscosity oil that the engine was designed for

I believe that oil pumps are positive displacement, so that regardless of the oil weight, the same volume would be pumped per revolution.
Meaning it wouldn't take thicker oil longer to get to the top of the engine, just that it would take more engine power.
, so the eff
Put in what you should. Stick engine oil in a hydraulic system and you blow hoses. Get the right viscosity and grade for the application.
Would it damage the oil pump in the long run by adding resistance to the flow of oil around the engine, particularly on cold starts when the oil is more viscous?
@@Nozinbonsai How is that relevant to what I said?
I admit I was just nerding out on technical correctness.
@@MrWindermere123 Highly unlikely given the strength of the parts in oil pumps.
So what engine oil are we not supposed to buy? You never told us what engine oil never to buy that says WHAT EXACTLY?
Maybe it refers to not using heavier oil than what is specified by the car maker. (Scotty essentially said to not switch oils).
That's what i said he do so many videos he just throws random names so you watch his random knowledge. I do wish it was lil better organized.
I kept watching and watching like he said nothing about the OIL lol
Anyone who has ever looked inside an engine will clearly see no surface is ever 'dry of oil' before you start it...
There's oil all over the inside your engine before you start it, even on the bearings and in the piston rings.

My Grandmother Ordered a Special Non Hybrid Ford Escape in 2009.
I spoke with the dealership, he told me when the batteries go dead? So does your car! It will not work because the electric part of the engine is connected to the gas engine, if that makes sense
Which means it will basically lock up your Gas Engine preventing it from driving. The batteries are only warrantied for a few years also.
That's why we stayed away from Hybrids!
Scotty got me again with the thumbnail and I am MAD AS HELL. 😂

I've been running the same silicone wipers for 5 years. I clean them with a shop rag every couple months. No noise no streaks.

What about the oil
I have learned a lot from scottie. Thank you very much
A thicker oil will leave a thicker MOFT between parts. Also, the oil pathways in an engine fill via positive displacement of the oil pump, meaning oil flows just as fast regardless of viscosity. Thinner oil is for CAFE goals, not engine protection.
I never buy oil that says anything. Talking oil is the last thing I need.
Whats your options on adding a little 2 stroke mineral oil into your diesel fuel?

Might have to listen again. What was the answer to "Never Buy Engine Oil that Says This"😗
Oil pumps don't work that away. When it starts pumping oil it's continuous so thin oil doesn't get to the top any faster than thick oil.
@Justinian Yi I think coating time would be minuscule because the oils usually feed directly at the bearings.
Did Scotty ever discuss what engine oil to not buy?
All I got was to not put in engine oil that the engine wasn't designed for. Therefore, if your owners manual states use 5-30w oil, don't think you're doing the engine favors by putting in 50w oil. I was actually told once they use 50w oil in all his vehicles because the engine leaks less with it. Scotty is saying don't do that because the oil is not lubricating the engine quickly enough when you start it up and will experience more wear on the engine from initial start up.
