great info. I actually made the switch from 0w-20 to 0w-30 Valvoline European bmw ll-01. I do some spirited driving twice a month, and burn less oil than when I was running 0w-20. Before I had to top off about .5-1qt every 2k or so. The most I had to top off was maybe half a quart at about 4k. 0w-30 and 0w-40 for the win all day!
Weather is important, living in Florida are summers are very hot, I run 0-30 in my xDrive 440i, no issues, the slightly thicker oil helps combat overheating, heat thins oil and when it's already very hot it can get too thin at 0-20, all shops in hot climates suggest *-30 for summer, most of us running year-round.
Weather doesn't matter. Our cooling system works well whether it's 30F or 100+. And thick oil doesn't combat overheating. You need to improve your cooling system for that.
Amsoil makes a wonderful "European Spec" 0W-20 and an even better Signature Series 0W-20. I probably wouldn't use sig series until after yanking the stock cat off like you did. Those European emissions/cats are no joke.
I was curious about this. I swapped from BMW oil to Amsoil Euro 0w20 as soon as I bought the car. I have since went catless with a stage 2 tune. I wasn't sure if it was ok to switch to Amsoil Signature 0w20 or maybe even 0w30 on my next oil change?
Trying to pick the right Liqui Moly product. They recommend 0W-20 Top Tec 6600 but on FCP Euro they recommend 5W-30 because "New BMW's fitted with BXX series engines "Require" 0W-20 LL14FE+ Rated oils. WE DO NOT RECOMMEND using this spec! The levels of protection LL14FE provides are much lower than LL01. The new formulation LL14FE is mainly designed with CAFE ratings, EPA requirements and fuel mileage in mind, NOT OVERALL PROTECTION.""
It doesn't really matter what they say. The OEM designed the car to meet a standard and that includes everything i mentioned in the video. That being said, the LiquiMoly that I saw meets the LL01FE cert as well.

I love how this comment section is a b58 forum. Ive been running 0-20 on FBO and MHD tune i mainly daily except a few pulls to try and clean the carbon. I live in the country side but i did a few test cruising home at 55 and 65, normal temp a lil over 210°f but at 65 it drops down to like 190°f, has anyone noticed this with just 10mph?
Very informative video. I had experienced some oil consumption, 0W20 full synthetic Pennzoil. I didnt get a warning or anything but i always check my oil. Thinking of making the switch to 0W40, its LL01 Approved. Is it normal for 0W20 to be burned in a stage 2 catless downpipe, 91 oct B58?
Any loss in power or mpg for you with 0w40? I’ve got a stage 2 M140i manual. I’m switching to 0w40 and curious as I get 46mpg cruising in eco mode (very rarely use it, mainly sport/sport+) at 65-70mph.

So after checking and learning from this the best answer is to keep using the factory recommended oil until you start tweaking the car then you go to a thicker oil ?
Even when making more power the factory oil is pretty good. Stick with oils that meet the oem cert in your manual and do an oil analysis when you can for peace of mind.
Thanks, kern417. I’ve got a lot of knowledge from your channel about basic technology and mod for B58. Recently I changed oil by myself. I chose ‘Liquimoly synthoil 5w-40’ than ‘Leichtlauf 5w-40’ ,because ‘synthoil’ is advertised as ‘fully synthetic’. But ‘Liquimoly synthoil’ is approved as ‘BMW long life 98’ , not ‘BMW long life 01or 04. Do you think it will cause any trouble? My 340i is tuned by MHD and xHP, catless downpipe, CSF heat exchanger, tuHPFP. MHD setting is ‘stage2 98ron, sport cooling mode’. Oil temp remain under 100°C under street use. I have two questions blow. ①Does ‘BMW long life98 approved oil’ cause an issue on B58? ②’MHD stock cooling mode’ keeps my oil temp around120℃ @10℃ ambient temp. ‘Sport cooling mode’ keeps it under 100℃. Which mode is better for street use?
Agree with what you say, but... If you read thru the various forum boards, guys who routinely analyze their oil get the best results with 0w40 or 5w40 ll-01 spec oil. Then there's the guys who really beat on their turbo engines that swear by rotella 15w40 T6, although it is not ll-01 certified. In the chart that you put up, an oil with a 3.5 High Shear Viscosity or better is where you want to be. Below 2.5 any you are asking for trouble. And remember that oil with miles on it breaks down over time, so you may loose a point after 5000 miles or so.
I'm not sure where you're getting your info but you absolutely should not run 15w40. Plenty of people get good data with 0w20 as well. Stick with what the engine is designed for and you'll have the best luck.
@@kern417 My info comes from the race/drift guys who beat on their oil pretty hard. And yes, the higher shear oils within a given viscosity do consistently exhibit less wear. This is a big reason why Amsoil, Penzoil, and Castroil synthetics generally do well when compared to the rest.
You can't just go to anyone to get info because they drift their cars. Do they have B58s? Stock engines? Whats their oil change frequency? What oil temps do they see? You're talking about something that doesn't relate to the topic at hand. Running that heavy of an oil on your B58 will ruin it. All you're doing is slowing down the oil's flow when it's cold, which is when the most wear happens. Do more research and you'll understand.
Based on your video, im thinking 5w-30 on my stage 2.5/2+ 440i. Im in SoCal so it’s never reaches sub-freezing temps, and I dont beat on my car very much. I plan on running logs as well, but what do you think?

Would you advise using heavier weight for higher mileage? I own a 17’ 340ix and MTC records showed that when I bought it in 19’ it had been serviced with 5W-30 it now has over 60K and I never changed to 0W-20 because it had previously been serviced with higher weight and because I don’t know all the ins and outs of it I was afraid to change it. @@federoco1 With MG you can toggle it on the fly through the dome light button. The cooling mode is not really much use unless you are on a track, because all your doing is stressing the water pump more.

How do you like your BMW with the B46. I just got one. I'm in Miami, Florida. I was surprised about the 0w20. Never had a car with such thin oil. The Deaker told me South Motors they recommend at 60 to 70k to put 0w30. I told they why not 0W30 from the beginning to prevent wear. Tgey also told me that the 0W20 provides better gas mileage, wich lead me to believe the thin oil was just for saving gas, but then I run into this video. I'm only at almost 500 miles, and I plan on doing the first change early before 1k, perhaps even a second early one as well, abd then do them 4 to 5 k from then on. Nice video. Keep going. I emailed liqui moly about what oil should i use in my m140i e30 and this is them answer: The manufacturer requires an oil with the BMW Longlife-04 specification. In the fact that this engine is not already standard I recommend to raise to an 5W-40 viscosity for stable oil pressure. Please also check your oil temperature, which should not be higher than 115°C, sometimes 120°C maximum for a short time. If the temperatures are higher, your engine will be damaged in the long term. As perfect suitable oil from us I recommend our Top Tec 4110 5W-40 with the official BMW Longlife-04 What's your opinion about this? Thank you
It's not ideal but probably works. I still recommend doing an oil analysis. Expecially whe using 10w oil. It'll take longer to warm up and you'll drive your car longer with the engine oil below operating temp.
No does not effect cold start at all, difference between you and me is you go through engines but I have never lost an engine in my life. And yes, most of the time I'm airborne.
@@SlickJeff2020 it absolutely will increase the time to warm up going from 0w to 10w oil. It's physics. Idk what you are going on about the rest. Like I said, do an oil analysis and it'll tell you everything instead of going off of assumptions.
To test your 0w health theory hold your hot engine in third at 25 miles per hours, than slowly bring it up to 4,500 rpm, if you look for it your gonna here metal on metal contact in your cam loops, because 0w can not provide adequate film. That's science.
@@SlickJeff2020 you really don't know anything about science or engineering if you think that's the case. Higher viscosity can't provide better lubrication if it can't get between component's. 0w-30 and 0w-40 for the win all day!
Where are you located in? I live in LA, should I switch to 0w-30 from 0w-20? I drive 2020 m340i - no mods
They can recommend using a certain brand oil. I know 2 of the top that do it and that's Hyundai who rec castrol and ducati rec shell.
Amsoil makes a wonderful "European Spec" 0W-20 and an even better Signature Series 0W-20. I probably wouldn't use sig series until after yanking the stock cat off like you did. Those European emissions/cats are no joke.
The problem with Amsoil is that: 1. they're effectively an MLM company and 2. they don't go and get the approvals from the manufacturers

Thinking of making the switch to 0W40, its LL01 Approved.

Not in my experience but every car is different. I currently run 0w30

My friend, great channel congratz. Do i use ll04 or ll01 in my 440i 2019?? it comes with the extra liter of ll04.....i am in EUR
Here in UK the manual also state's 30/40 viscosity oils can be used. I'm personally running Mobil 1 FS 0w40 as it was a good price.

I would recommend switching to the LL01 oil at your next oil change
I don't use sport Cooling mode personally Because I don't see the need. My oil temps are controlled well without it on.
Thanks, I appreciate your advice.
Why wouldn’t you recommend LL98 if that is a true synthetic oil? Vs liquimoly high tech which is a blend but advertised as “full synthetic”
Just because it's a synthetic oil doesn't mean it's designed for your engine or meets the requirements. Watch the video.

I can set the "Regular engine temperature" from the settings. You know the original temperature is around 230F (very high), what do you think is the best regular engine temperature for a tuned B48-B58? Thanks so much.
It will maintain the same temps when tuned and should not be an issue.
@@kern417 So, would you keep oem setting, 230F?
@@federoco1 yes
@@federoco1 With MG you can toggle it on the fly through the dome light button. The cooling mode is not really much use unless you are on a track, because all your doing is stressing the water pump more.

I have an x3 m40i, 2018. as far as the motor/ turbo goes, are there any key differences compared to the 2/3/440i?
Nope it's pretty much the same, but fitment for some parts like the intake and heat exchanger will be different just because you have a bigger engine bay. But turbos, downpipes, etc that bolt to the engine should have the same fitment.
Do you think the Castrol Edge 0w-20 is still fine for a b58 despite Castrol not having the ll-01 cert?
I would be surprised if it doesn't but if that's the case I'd look at another. Plenty are available that meet the requirements.

I run 0w-20 on my B46 X3. I live in Florida where it’s 90 degrees plus year round. I often see myself pushing the car to the limiter at around 4-4500rpm for no more than 15min at a time sustained on the express lane quite often, been that way since new (30k mi ago). I never run the car hard before turning it off (I don’t like the fans doing the cooling for me). I change oil every 4k mi. Car is stock other than for a dinan piggy back. Is there anything I should be doing to maximize engine life? I know these cars a designed for autobahn use and meant to sustain high speeds
They Saud I could ask the service dept. to put the thicker oil (0W30), or even 5W30, if I wanted, but the 0W30 flows better . Wgat type if oil brand a tree you using, and how do you like the X3, and B46 thus far ?
Ight so I be pushing my car, and ofc not until oil is up to temp, and transmission over 170-180 °F.

You're talking about pushing 10w oil through bearing tolerances that are thousandths of an inch on a cold engine. Good luck when your rod bearings are scored to oblivion.
