What I do not understand is why a local locksmith was not hired to make a new key OR why the ignition was not bypassed . It cannot be that hard.

Now, I'm no expert - hardly even a 'car guy', but if I was buying a vehicle expensive as a McLaren, I would hope there's some proprietary device in the key to keep some dummy from only having to call a locksmith to jack my 10m+ car. The trade-off being that McLaren will make that key very hard to obtain.

@@gilbertvehicleservices It's quite a bit more difficult than that. You have to go to a McClaren dealer to get the key cut code. Which you will not get without the title and proof that the vehicle is yours. I used to work at Nissan and someone came in trying to get a key for a vehicle they didn't know and we couldn't do it. So with that knowledge, imagine how more difficult it would be for a supercar.

That was a funny line, but on the topic;
I personally don't think he'd have any issue with the Cartel when it comes to buying the car. Yeah you can't be stupid, you have to know how to move around them, but the cartel isn't usually an issue. Usually these areas are dangerous due to gangs (not usually related to cartels, which the cartels will go after).
Chances are, he would get robbed by some gang and killed prior to ever getting to the cartel.
While cartels CAN be dangerous and do go to war, you do have to understand that they own allot of the tourism businesses in Mexico, among many other regular businesses. Its not in their best interest to terrify people from going to Mexico. Plus, believe it or not, the Cartel does allot of its own policing among other things, they actually handle things as if they were leaders of a territory, not just a gang. They are respected businessmen and handle the situations as such. Allot of people view cartels as a problem, but allot also view cartels as their savior. If it wasn't from cartels, there may be no order or balance, or an economy at that.
Cartels aren't savages. I'm sure if ed showed up and spoke with a respected higher-up at the cartel (Which I assume would be someone who would own the F1). I don't see him having an issue figuring out a transaction and leaving unharmed.
Though, I doubt the cartel takes financing.

I remember hearing a lot of buzz about a McLaren F1 in Culiacán, around the early 2000s, never saw a picture or a video, but the word was that the owner was taking it drag racing every other weekend, so it could be seen some Sundays in an old airstrip... Allegedly.
I heard that same story in like 2000 or 01 from my buddy Fernando who is dual citizenship. I didn't believe him but it's funny it matches up the whole thing he was telling me is that the airstrip the racing it on is an old baja cartel airstrip he never mentioned anything about El Chapo ties just that they were ripping it up in the desert with an F1. Usually where there's smoke there's fire might be some truth to it

The reason it doesn't appear on the MOT database until 2005 is simply that that's when the computerised database for MOTs started. Prior to that, they were just issued on a piece of paper that you had to keep with the car.
I live in Mexico and can confirm this story and the car has been a mistery for the entire car community here. Nobody exactly knows where its located but many believe its still hidden in a barn somewhere in rural Sinaloa, without a key, and not in Mexico City.

There is/was a video on YT about the history of it but it was a year or two ago that I saw it and I don't recall which channel it was on or the title of the vid. I just finished watching this and remembered seeing this car in about 2009 here in San Miguel de Allende, Guanjuato, Mexico...Recardo Beltran the money man for El Chapo had driven the car to a Board meeting that I and others were attending. It was very distinctive with the gold rims and that odd color of brown. Of course Beltran was arrested again here in San Miguel several years later. Having lived in San Miguel since 2005 it is very normal to see rare cars in town.

In the UK, when a car goes through an MOT(yearly test), they check the VIN, so i think this yellow car(P440CPJ) really is the #39
What could have happened is that #39 was brought back to the UK in 2005 and the P440CPJ plate transferred(legally) back to it. Then it was painted to be a "replica" of the Harrods car #06R, which could be stored safely, being worth as much as 3 times the value of #06R

When you sell a car in the UK you can take the registration off of the vehicle and place it on retention. The car gets assigned a new registration. You can assign the plate you placed on retention to any other vehicle the same age or older. Only costs £80 to do this too.
I have a feeling in my gut that Ed will find his peace and this McLarens story is just the beginning...

This registration number has had an annual “MOT” test in the UK since 2011, with
I’ve just checked, the MOT history goes back to 12/09/05 with 4,203 miles
It also comes up as a yellow McLaren so the reg definitely belongs to that car.
Question is, did it originally and is the yellow race car, the missing one in question?
Makes me wonder if someone can figure out the last 11 digits of either V5C. We can just call the MOT tester..

I have seen by pure chance a McLaren F1 (black) in Mexico City back in 2012 on a flatbed trailer together with a new McLaren MP4-12C (Volcano Red). I was stuck in traffic on a paralleI lane when they slowly passed me on the left). I assume they belong to the same owner, seeing they were together on 2 flatbed trucks. So I guess that F1 from Chapo is still there somewhere hidden (since at the decomisioned luxury car auction back in June 2019, there was no McLaren F1 on the list).
I've always loved the story and mystery around this car! I tend to believe your last hypothesis, especially since 39 could also be used as a donor car to the owners other F1, but part of me hopes 39 is not seen again for a very long time... just to keep the mystery alive!

The car is still here in México, Culiacán. Dont know the owner but I heard about a year ago they were going to sell it, and the bet was going to start like at 10 or12 mil dlls. I dont know if it was sold or not, just before that there was a war and didnt heard more about that car. Thats all I know. Its still here in Culiacán.

Hello. Being UK motor trade I have access to some information that shows me registration number P440CPJ has been attached to the yellow car since 1996 (chassis 39).. It does however show me that the yellow car used to be Brown. The DVLA were notified of a colour change in 2005 from Brown to Yellow. It does also show me that the car has a change of UK registered keeper in September of 2020.
That was weird, a dude just talking for about 18 minutes, but omg it was very interesting, i enjoyed that really much

Yoooooooooo, I went Los Mochis Sinaloa in 2013 to a couple festivals they had and through some friends of cousins I have out there ended up at a huge party at some ranch. Instantly knew it had to be someone from the cartel because of the magnitude of the party. They even had a couple famous Mexican artist performing there. Turns out it’s one of the higher ranks from the cartel de Sinaloa. And they had a car covered in one of the garages with the body of that mclaren. And it had those exact gold wheels. Didn’t see the car itself since it was covered but I do recognize those wheels. I’m willing to bet anything that that’s the damn car. All I was told was that I was an expensive car that el chapo owned which was passed down to a son which was then sold to the guy in the cartel. It has to be that car
