It doesn't get much better than driving a Porsche roadster with a 6-speed stick, nearly 400 hp, and a howling flat-6 revving to 8,000 RPM! Porsche may have just given the Boxster and Cayman GTS 4.0 the best engine transplant of the year. The mid-engine Corvette may attract more attention and has a higher cool factor, but its the Boxster and Cayman that continue to deliver that sublime combination of driving fun with everyday practicality that so many enthusiasts yearn for in a sports car.
Getting in and out of a race seat has a technique to it. I have the CF seats in my Porsche Spyder and it’s no problem getting in and out once you get the technique right. My Ferrari sat even lower and you need to use same technique for ingress and egress. I’m glad I specced them.
I truly hope this type of car never goes away. This car is the embodiment of a pure sports car, and at price that a lot of people could reasonably afford, either new or used.

Great review, as always! One minor correction regarding the exhaust sound: the factory exhaust on both European and US cars will sound identical from the factory, because they all come with OPF filters just forward of the rear muffler. The only difference is that the US models don't have the active particulate filter found on the EU models, instead using an inactive filter matrix in place of the active one on EU cars. The EU cars use an expensive soot-trapping precious-metal coating which traps soot that is burned off later (part of the stringent Euro 6 emission standard). Since it's only the chemical coating on the filter matrix that's different between the EU and US cars, the sound attenuation on both should be virtually identical. Fortunately for us, there are aftermarket replacements for the OPF section of the exhaust from Soul, Fabspeed, and Akrapovic that completely remove the OPF filter. And in the US, these OPF bypass pipes can be installed without any changes to the factory emissions tuning - restoring the full volume of that glorious flat-6!

The market alone in North American would be at least 300k plus units. The problem with manufacturers nowadays is they’re adding too much features like auto stop, lane keeping assist, auto braking, safety distance keeping, fake exhaust sound coming from the speaker, and then a tiny turbo that allow the car to rev up to no more than 6.5k rpm, power drops after 5k rpm and costs $3000-5000 more than it should be because of all those unwanted features. Porsche is only replacing the Flat 4 in the GTS model, you will still be able to get it in the base and S variations of the 718 Cayman and Boxster. In my opinion that is a good thing, auto journalists must be advised to follow a script basing how the Flat 4 sounds (completely subjective) but seem to forget how amazing the engine is at delivering power and how quick it is.

i have the 2018 porsche gts and i test drove this 718 boxster gts not too long ago. for 90k i feel like the quality and the drive feel is reasonable. im thinking about buying the 2021 model year as my second car.
This is the Porsche I would buy, except in Cayman form and in Miami blue with the standard matte black wheels. The 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 is the perfect sports car all around.

I have such mixed feelings on the 4.0 models. They sound amazing and the power delivery of an atmospheric engine is obviously more linear and better for driving on a track. However, the torque delivery of the 2.5L and shorter gearing makes for a better driving experience in day to day driving. At the end of the day, I scored such an amazing deal on my 2.5L GTS that the price delta for the 4.0L version (assuming Porsche dealers refuse to discount the 4.0L models, due to hype) would be difficult to justify. However, if I could get a 4.0L for the same discount off MSRP I got my 2.5L for, I would certainly go for the 4.0L, if only for that sound. Yeah, the 2.5L sounds very uninspiring when you wind it out. However, the 982, like the 981 before it, is an amazing car to drive.
Interesting. I'm thinking an old 981 6cyl, either the gts or the S with a PDK to resolve the gearing issue. Or the 718 S, 4cyl, again PDK. I wouldn't mind a manual but the gears are too long.
