    Few brands can deliver on motoring perfection like Porsche can. The #BoxsterGTS has always been the very definition of that but a few years ago, @Porsche introduced the #718Boxster with a four-cylinder turbocharged engine. Performance improved, but enthusiasts whined over the death of the howling flat-6 cylinder engine. For 2021, the beloved 6-cylinder is back in the form of the #718BoxsterGTS 4.0L, now powered by a 4.0L F6 with nearly 400 HP and 309 lb-ft of torque. Although some sports cars are now more exotic looking, few can match the sublime combination of driving bliss that #Porsche is known for.

    It doesn't get much better than driving a Porsche roadster with a 6-speed stick, nearly 400 hp, and a howling flat-6 revving to 8,000 RPM! Porsche may have just given the Boxster and Cayman GTS 4.0 the best engine transplant of the year. The mid-engine Corvette may attract more attention and has a higher cool factor, but its the Boxster and Cayman that continue to deliver that sublime combination of driving fun with everyday practicality that so many enthusiasts yearn for in a sports car.

      Getting in and out of a race seat has a technique to it. I have the CF seats in my Porsche Spyder and it’s no problem getting in and out once you get the technique right. My Ferrari sat even lower and you need to use same technique for ingress and egress. I’m glad I specced them.

      It probable as long as you can buy synthetic/biogas or wait until Hydrogen injected cars get cheap. Also after we win the global warming wars maybe restrictions on cars would lift some as only enthusiasts would have gas cars anyway the rest would have EVs, Hydrogen fuel cell, or Hydrogen injected cars.

    • @autocrosseverything

      @@GreenBlueWalkthrough to be honest, I hate EVs that need to be charged. I think hydrogen is the future. I know Hyundai and Toyota have produced some fairly impressive hydrogen vehicles, but the price point excludes a majority of the average population. Once that tech comes down in price and the infrastructure is in place, I'll happily buy a hydrogen car. I think electric cars are temporary.

    Great review, as always! One minor correction regarding the exhaust sound: the factory exhaust on both European and US cars will sound identical from the factory, because they all come with OPF filters just forward of the rear muffler. The only difference is that the US models don't have the active particulate filter found on the EU models, instead using an inactive filter matrix in place of the active one on EU cars. The EU cars use an expensive soot-trapping precious-metal coating which traps soot that is burned off later (part of the stringent Euro 6 emission standard). Since it's only the chemical coating on the filter matrix that's different between the EU and US cars, the sound attenuation on both should be virtually identical. Fortunately for us, there are aftermarket replacements for the OPF section of the exhaust from Soul, Fabspeed, and Akrapovic that completely remove the OPF filter. And in the US, these OPF bypass pipes can be installed without any changes to the factory emissions tuning - restoring the full volume of that glorious flat-6!

    Dude, Porsche has not "gotten rid of" the 4cyl, it is still the engine in the Cayman / Boxster standard, S and T

  • @svmtbman
    @svmtbman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Porsche is only replacing the Flat 4 in the GTS model, you will still be able to get it in the base and S variations of the 718 Cayman and Boxster. In my opinion that is a good thing, auto journalists must be advised to follow a script basing how the Flat 4 sounds (completely subjective) but seem to forget how amazing the engine is at delivering power and how quick it is.

    • @HansWee
      @HansWee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      glad to see this. ... i'm debating getting the base model. its more than fast enough and an extra $30k seems like a lot for the sound. This chassis with a lesser sound is more than enough for most people.

    • @typer600rr
      @typer600rr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NeoHCgbz world wide car enthusiasts still love and want a car like the s2000 till these days. If Honda make another NA s2000 that rev over 8k rpm with over 250hp, weight less than 3000lbs for under $38,000 I am pretty sure it will sell over 500k units worldwide easily . The market alone in North American would be at least 300k plus units. The problem with manufacturers nowadays is they’re adding too much features like auto stop, lane keeping assist, auto braking, safety distance keeping, fake exhaust sound coming from the speaker, and then a tiny turbo that allow the car to rev up to no more than 6.5k rpm, power drops after 5k rpm and costs $3000-5000 more than it should be because of all those unwanted features. I don’t mind all these features on a daily or commute car but a real driving machine for car enthusiasts shouldn’t come with these features.

    I have such mixed feelings on the 4.0 models. They sound amazing and the power delivery of an atmospheric engine is obviously more linear and better for driving on a track. However, the torque delivery of the 2.5L and shorter gearing makes for a better driving experience in day to day driving.
    At the end of the day, I scored such an amazing deal on my 2.5L GTS that the price delta for the 4.0L version (assuming Porsche dealers refuse to discount the 4.0L models, due to hype) would be difficult to justify. However, if I could get a 4.0L for the same discount off MSRP I got my 2.5L for, I would certainly go for the 4.0L, if only for that sound. Yeah, the 2.5L sounds very uninspiring when you wind it out.
    However, the 982, like the 981 before it, is an amazing car to drive.

      Interesting. I'm thinking an old 981 6cyl, either the gts or the S with a PDK to resolve the gearing issue.
      Or the 718 S, 4cyl, again PDK.
      I wouldn't mind a manual but the gears are too long.

    I love everything about 781 4.0. I'd say its much improvement from previous flat four...but unfortunately, 981 still sounds so much better. I get the emission regulations... and this being much faster and better in every aspect, but... after being an owner of 981 boxster gts, and spoiled by its glorious sound... I just cant seem to justify the upgrade. At least give us more popcorns! then I'd get this car.

      I think newer cars can sound just as good with an exhaust mod.

    I have the 987.2 version but from what I understand compared with a C8 this is more sports experience as opposed to extremely sporty GT car in the C8. I like the compact, lightweightness of the Porsche, but I wouldn't kick the C8 out of bed on a cold night either !

    One correction though. The US model has the same exhaust system so its equally silent. I just got the 2023 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 Manual and it’s silent like the tester. The GT4 and the Spyder has a different system so it’s louder.

    Porsche designed the new 4.0 Flat Six in the GTS 4.0, GT4 and Spyder to last longer with the tougher EU regulations. They said this themselves so this engine, should at least be around for a bit. It just depends on what car they shove it into.
    It will probably be in the Cayman GT4 RS but tuned differently.

    You should leave it in Sport mode it gives you better sound vs Sport Plus which you don't get louder sound but max performance

    You could make a very good argument that Porsche is the best brand in the world today:
    1. They make simply the best manual transmission cars on Earth, including cars like this GTS
    2. They make the Taycan, which is as good of an EV as any Tesla
    3. They make crossovers, SUVs, grand tourers and luxury cars that take a back seat to no one
    They can build any kind of car to the nth degree, easily competitive with the best in the world.
    All with a level of quality, exclusivity and resale that is the envy of the world.
    If you own a new Porsche, you have arrived at the next level in life, regardless of where you started off.

    This but with some really short gears would be the absolute best. Guess you just have to take it to sharkwerks and pay 10k plus for a new gearbox.
