  • After my 718 Boxster 4-cylinder review in the last video comes a very different proposition in the shape of the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0, and I don't just mean the colour! There are whispers among motoring journalists that this is the best car Porsche makes, so lets find out...
    Many thanks to Porsche GB for the loan of the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 for this video.

    I purchased a 2018 Cayman GTS 3 months ago with 18,000 kms on the clock and yes it’s the unloved 4 cylinder 2.5L with a turbo and I absolutely love this car! Same Porsche quality as the 911 but better handling, carmine red stitching throughout, full carbon interior, Bose sound and PDK. It’s an absolute rocket and looks fantastic in Agate grey with red callipers Michelin PS2 red seat belts and as I said red stitching everywhere. Great video on the 4L but I will stick with the 2.5L thanks.

      Your GTS sounds awesome. That’s the strength of the Porsche range, that there is choice. To find the perfect car that’s right for you. And it sounds like you’ve made a good one 👍

    Good job. Enjoyed the review. I traded a 2014 911 Turbo S for one of these. It really is meant to be driven in Sport Plus (I have PDK) however where it really comes alive is in manual mode above 5500rpm. This engine is tuned for full power right up to redline, unfortunately on a public road that lasts for about two seconds before..well you get it...

    • @getdealtwithquick
      @getdealtwithquick 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's an interesting trade and probably a well considered one. Any regrets? The Turbo S is obviously wicked fast and probably can't stretch its legs on public roads which surely levels the playing field somewhat between both cars. Raw power aside for a minute, though: is there anything the 718 package is noticeably lacking over the 991? Did you experience a faster drop in the "draw" back to drive one of them, compared to the other?

      Very similar to my GT350. Down low, it’s not as impressive , but Once I’m above 3200 RPM, the car just catapults !

    Great video 🤓!!! I recently acquired my 2023 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 which has the 4L NA flat six cylinder engine (same unit as a GT4) and a PDK gearbox. Power output (394 bhp) and torque (317 lb-ft) are a nice match to this car's sensible curb weight (~3200 lbs). The color is Gentian Blue metallic with a black/chalk all-leather interior and silver wheel rims. It's definitely an entertaining driver's car!
    So far, I've only done 326 miles but hopefully a lot more this next summer! The PDK is also a lot of fun (it's definitely quick) 🤓
    All the best and thanks again from Colorado!

    Excellent review. About a year ago, bought a 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 with a manual and agree fully with all your comments. It is absolutely the most exciting car I have ever driven, much less owned. As a former BMW enthusiast, consider me now fully in the Porsche camp. The exhaust note is truly intoxicating and one of the main attributes of a truly stellar car. Also agree with your view of the long gear ratio in 2nd, as at 7,800 redline the speed is 80 mph. Initially, thought that would be a problem, but over the past year, it has not proven to be an issue. Love your “Swiss watch” analogy, which is spot on. Again, thanks for creating such an excellent review.

    This is my favorite review so far, happy that YT recommended it. A pragmatic, toned down yet enthusiastic apptoach. Many thanks for the feedback and I’m glad you liked the video 🙏. My enthusiasm and motivation for making these vids really is a rollercoaster so when I get nice comments like this it really helps 👍. I found the Bose system pretty good, but I have heard real audiophiles say they don’t rate them. So if you are of that level it might be wise to go for the Burmester system. Thanks again 🙏

    Enjoyed the review very much and just subscribed. Coming from 911 and waiting for new boxster gts4.0 to be built… I’m anxious to feel the chassis and handling/suspension difference. No doubt great engine and shifting feel, others have pinned down the suspension being a bit uneasy over bumps and could be better tuned to the heavier and powerful engine. It’ll be great if you discuss that aspect in more detail and length in future reviews. Cheers!

    Nice review. Agree with many of your opinions. I have always been a big GT4 fan but I really like these GTS models and as you mentioned, they do fly under the radar, including in price vs the GT4. Biggest gripe I have about this car is the lack of wireless Apple CarPlay, which is minor in comparison to what it is. I believe if you order it with the $2800 Porsche Connect and nav option, the wireless CarPlay is included.

    We took delivery of our manual transmission Guards Red GTS 4.0 May, 2021 in Los Angeles at the Porsche Experience Center. I HIGHLY Recommend this experience which includes mentoring on their track. Today, March 2022, we have < 3K miles on her. Still learning the nuances of her. ABSOLUTELY LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT HER ESPECIALLY THE ENGINE! Just an absolute joy to drive. I LOVE 2nd gear! I know it’s going to be a great day if I have an excuse to drive our Porsche.

    • @69FOSTER
      @69FOSTER ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm considering a GTS 4.0. As far as the engine, how is the low end torque? Does the car have good pulling power from a stop light? I have a 1999 Carerra and my only complaint is the lack of low end torque, it doesn't pin my back to the seat from a standing start.

    • @TimSpreitzer
      @TimSpreitzer ปีที่แล้ว

      @@69FOSTER Search for a dealer with one in stock for a test drive, and perhaps invest in some track time in LA or Atlanta at a Porsche Experience Center.
      I'd say if you want something to win drag races, perhaps this is not the car.
      That being said, while the PDK is quicker than the manual, in 1st gear, with the manual, accelerating off-the-line, I can see the yellow flickering of the traction control dashboard light as it prevents wheel spin. Yea, it definitely pins my back to the seat when I have pole position at a stop sign or traffic light. 🥰 Puts a smile on my face every time. I have to remind myself not to give her too much juice when accelerating in first gear to ensure keeping the rear wheels from losing traction especially when turning, though the balance is great and response if predictable, I just don't want to attract the wrong kind of attention by drifting around turns. 🚔

    • @karlhurn
      @karlhurn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wow, really tough question! From my point of view, if I didn’t have to compromise slightly for the practicality of having rear seats as I have kids (obviously optioning in rear seats on a Carrera T), it would be the Carrera T. But no compromise and just for me at the weekend, I think the Cayman GTS 4.0 wins as the engine really feels special.

    Nice video review! As someone who is looking at this as an only car in snowy climate, do you have any more comments on the daily driving practicality? The cup holders seem useless. How is the interior “space” behind the seats under the rear window for small items?

    • @karlhurn
      @karlhurn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! 🙏 Glad you liked the review. I actually like the cup holders, they work really well, But if you like a Big Gulp you might have a problem 😂. The interior is pretty practical, the space over the engine is actually quite big and could take a few large bags for a road trip etc, or perhaps two golf bags if you’re into that. There’s not really any space behind the actual seats. In the snow you’d probably need to go to winter tyres, but it depends how bad it gets. Here in the UK you could manage on all seasons.

    • @Dragobrath
      @Dragobrath 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am from Estonia and I did a Cayman GTS test drive on a christmas week when we had 20cm of snow. I tested it hard in the parking lots and the yards, that haven't been cleaned. Did an uphill start on snowy road. Mid-engine layout really makes a difference, the grip is fantastic for an RWD. Did not get stuck anywhere, even though my A4 Quattro had it rough. The car was definitely on its limit though, so I would not push it unnecessarily.
      The thing to consider is the clearance. If you live outside of the town, in a rural area that isn't plowed very often, then I'd probably look for another car. In town it's fine though.

    Your RØDE GO II sounds good - I've got one still in the box. I thought Python Green would draw too much attention (for an introvert) and also, the cops would find me even if I could outrun them (hard to do in Wyoming bc so few paved side roads) so I ordered Aventurine Green. My car arrives in May. I was interested to hear about the PASM +10 mm and forever I had wished for someone like you to have driven both the stock 20mm and the +10 & so compare for any noticeable difference... I could not find a definitive comment anywhere for a year so ultimately I went with the stock 20mm and hope for the best. BTW, I kept my options under $9K, so sticker price is under $100K, which was a somewhat arbitrary goal. Thanks for the great review - very nice job.

      Thanks 🙏 Glad you enjoyed the video. The Rode Go does a good job, although I did have some teething problems on the Carrera T video but I’ve got it set up in the sweet spot now 👌. I would imagine that the roads in Wyoming are better than they are here in the UK, so I think you’ll be just fine, also for resale I’m sure most people would expect the 20mm full GTS experience. Well done on resisting the full options list, like I said though the engine and gearbox (what you really want) come as standard 👌. Enjoy 👍

Constant reviews talking about the ‘long gearing’ has put me off manual potentially. I currently have the 981 GTS PDK so quite fancied a manual, but we’ll have to see. Also expect the sound in my 981 GTS is better than new 4.0 GTS, but 4.0 is going to be the better engine I’m sure. Glad you can turn off the cylinder deactivation. Just subscribed by the way.

      Sir, I went back and checked the configurator..cruise control is ONLY available with the PDK...when you try to spec cruise control with the manual, it adds the PDK..what am I missing?..Is it different on the other side of the pond?

    • @karlhurn

      This press car had the six speed manual and cruise control fitted as a £228 option. Maybe it’s a UK/European spec anomaly. If in doubt, I’d call your local Porsche dealer who will be happy to help 👍

    Drove the exact car in the US and found it surprisingly mundane, be it even uninspiring! Note, this is coming off a 997.2 GT3RS which is quite frankly, at another level of engagement!

    • @nafnaf0
      @nafnaf0 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @albertofourie3294 Yeah I did some spirited driving in a 2023 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 PDK through some mountain roads in the US and kind of felt the same way. It is very smooth and just sort of goes along. It is kind of loud inside and the ride is a little on the harsh side but is fine. The chassis can support tons more power than the car has, below 4000rpm it doesn't have that much grunt. Additionally, steering response and power delivery are very smooth and linear. Those factors combined might be what contributes to it feeling somewhat mundane.
      I also felt the interior of the car was a bit too tight for me (6'2", 210lbs). The 18-way seats just didn't go back far enough and I had to raise the steering wheel up more than I would have liked to avoid hitting my knees when turning. Overall a 911 992 has quite a bit more space and is more comfortable than the 718 even with the 18-ways (I have not driven a 992, only sat in them).
      The GTS 4.0 does handle and grip like nothing I have ever driven before and really unbelievable. It completely blew away a 2017 Chevy Corvette C7 Stingray in handling (and the Corvette handles really pretty well) that I had on had for comparison. The Corvette compared to the GTS 4.0 was just much less composed (still compared to other 'muscle cars' like the Camero SS or Mustang GT the C7 Corvette just blows them away) and feels like it will get away from you if you are not careful. The Porsche never once really started to feel like it might get away despite really pulling hard side to side.
      The gearing in the PDK car is certainly a problem. For spirited tight driving the GTS 4.0 PDK doesn't have 7 speeds, it only has one gear, that being 2nd gear. This is really gets to be quite annoying when trying to have fun with the car. You drop out of first gear pretty much immediately and then ride second gear all the way to ~75mph. The power below 4000rpm is really not that much and it really only truly comes alive above 6000rpm. I know some people like that, but it is really not that usable.
      It is very important to actually drive a car you are interested in and drive it in a spirited manner (it is the reason you get a car like this) not just useless dealer test drive. The reviewers usually only say the good things about the car and just get all excited, which really isn't always that helpful to someone trying to figure out if they would actually potentially want one of these cars. I also think most reviewers don't actually push the car very hard so they really don't know what it is like and as a cruising sports cars really arn't that great and that is not what they are designed for. So at the end of the day I didn't really like it and didn't really have that much fun in it (sadly).

    Getting time to upgrade my turbo 718 S after 6 years of incredible ownership. The 4.0 just didnt do it for me on my recent test drive. Looking for a low k GTS Turbo Cayman or Boxster. Just too good over what for me was a dull alternative in the new 4.0.

    • @peterbelmiro5733
      @peterbelmiro5733 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I recently purchased an 18’ 2.5 gts and exited to get it home. And you are right, turbo engines just have that low end torque that just shots you out of corners. I’ve said this in other video comments, the flat 6 reminds me of my RS3 in the sound department. Lack luster at low rpm’s but beautiful at a full chatter. Only problem is to get that sound I need to be at the track or face a wicked speeding ticket. The 2.5 and 4 liter are the identical car except for engines obviously. Same handling, interior, exterior etc. to me it comes down to power, torque delivery. I’m a turbo guy so the 2.5 will always win it for me. The potential for more is there, and it will walk away from pretty much most of the N/A flat 6 cars if tuned.
      Have a look at what the 2.5 can do on the Nurburgring vs the gt4…..you’ll be surprised

    great review, exactly what i was looking for. it is a toss-up between the gts and the emira from lotus for me and I think I will go with the gts. I think the porsche interior might be more quality. I hate the look of the steering wheel on the lotus.

      @karlhurn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many thanks 🙏 Glad you liked it. I think the Emira will be a big step forward for Lotus but it seems unlikely that it will match the quality of the Porsche. The Lotus will have a fantastic buzz about it when they start to appear on the roads this year though.

      I’ve driven both now, for sure there is a big difference in build quality IMO. They’re similar in character but so different as well, Lotus is more wow and I really like the sound too, the steering is in a different class too. However the Porsche is just quality throughout and I appreciate that when spending so much money, and it’s so good at everything it does, so I decided on the Porsche. Really nice video 👍

    Great review - I'm expecting delivery of mine in the next month or so - guards red, carbon buckets, manual, no GTS interior as that's a ridiculous extra when you're buying a GTS, but went for leather dash as an upgrade (black with black stitching), just 3 grand less than the full GTS interior package. Never driven a GTS - looking forward to picking it up....

    I don't understand the complaints about the long gearing. I took my 2014 Bimmer today for a spirited drive and was able to hit 110k/h in second gear, while this Porsche can reach 120k/h. Is the 10km difference really such a dealbreaker, or are the reviewers simply unable to find anything wrong with the car ?

    • @karlhurn
      @karlhurn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think UK reviewers might be focused on the fact that they feel it is set up for German Autobahns and not optimised for the UK. But like you say, it’s not really an issue.👍

    Like the look much. You said 3 to 4 times is a detuned engine. Don’t like that at all. Why not leave tuned. I know as some to comment that porcshe wants other of there cars that are more expensive to have the tuned engine. Still a shame that did the retuning for less HP. Maybe those that buy could have aftermarket up tuning at not to much costing.

      To be fair to Porsche, this was likely imposed on them in order to make what effectively is a race car engine available for use on the road in the UK/EU. So if it makes it possible to have that great engine, then I’m happy with that. All credit to Porsche for the off button 😂
