This must be one of the best classes of the great Katsaris. Overflowing passion and incredible technical details of the wonderful Scherzo 2 of Chopin. He also had an excellent student. A pedagogical hour of total pleasure.
Cyprien Katsaris, besides being a magnificent pianist is full of sympathy and charisma man, who certainly has the piano in his heart, so every little teaching delivery, it is full of happiness and wisdom... Congratulations! ...Wonderful piano lesson, and even more by the genial Scherzo No.2 Chopin.

Dans beaucoup d'examples, j'aime Katsaris parce que il est tres individual...pas toujours "correct," mais c'est pas grave. Il trouve un belle facon a faire la musique, mais, il fois faire attention quand tu "change" le text. Les nuances sont possible sans ca (par example, les triolets doit etre claire, pas eloigner). Anyway, c'est bon a voir une tres bonne etudiante qui joue les notes et qui fait la musique, mais qui n'a pas une voix individuelle comme Katsaris. Thanks for posting!

Granted, my French isn't perfect, but I know what I'm talking about: I am, after all, a professional musician, i.e., a concert pianist and educator. I showed respect in my comment and I expect the same from others who engage with me. Just to clarify, I absolutely love Katsaris. I think he is one of the most incredible and individual pianists living and performing today. I don't always agree with some of the odd things he does, but I always respect them. @@marshan1226 That's exactly what I was saying. I have played, performed, recorded, and taught many works, including many of those by Chopin. Katsaris clearly does not always follow precisely what is in the score if one is, shall we say, a literalist. The reason I respect him so much is because he subjectively "interprets" (a subjective word by its nature) what the score says. Sometimes, I don't agree with exactly "how" he interprets the notes, or at least what's hidden behind the notes, but I am always fascinated by his choices and respect them for the most part (i.e., 99% of the time). You are right that the concept of "correct" is a bit subjective, but there is also some objectivity to it. Of course, this can change depending on the age/era we live in. This spurned an entire debate in the Golden Age of pianism as to what is accetable and what isn't. It led to an entire movement of performance practice as well, which has stalwart advocates on both sides that make good arguments (I'm thinking of Landowska, Gould, and the like). Anyway, I didn't want to come across as callous towards Katsaris. On the contrary. While I don't think, objectively, he might follow all of the markings in a particular score, the ideas he creates from his interpretations of those markings (or even some he just makes up, as we all do), are amazing. I recentely realized that every pianist has in his/her repertoire this Scherzo, it's one of those pieces that students tend to want to do, and I read that Liszt prohibted students to bring this piece to his masterclasses, now i know why; we ALL want to do this damn piece. Is time to change, let's practice something else; all teachers should start to become aware of this and have a list of all those pieces that all students want to play becasue is beautiful for beginners. There are several different piano pieces that all of us want to start practice as beginners, these pieces should be avoided to bring at final exams tests, at masterclasses and at concerts. If I were a teacher I would create a list of those pieces that students are not allowed to bring.
