I love this, because she has an old world charm and elegance. She sings when she teaches. My teacher was Adele Marcus, very similar in this style. Adele was tougher, but their message was crystal clear. Happy to see this!
I've experienced Primakov's live performances in his early 20's as a student at the Music Academy of the West, in Santa Barbara...& I've NEVER forgotten it/him. He is one of the most phenomenal musicians I've ever witnessed...or the better word is 'experienced'. Period...& I've witnessed most of the greats. I'm just thankful there's something on utube that gives us a chance to witness the start of what is seared in my mind...although there's still nothing like being in the same room/hall/space when he LIVES & BREATHES every composition he seems to be channeling through every single cell in his body.
I love how thoughtful and skillful she plays the A minor walz. Her emphasis on phrasing and the functional approach of tempo fluctuations is just what the boy appeared to be needing at the time. He was really lucky to have her as a teacher.
What a wonderful childhood compared with today's children, who are playing only games and can't realise that life has so many possibilities to enjoy and develop. The lady is just a fabulous teacher and performer. Lucky child.
Wooow what a privilege to have been able to study with her, how much music she makes with each note. Thank you very much for sharing this video thanks thanks thanks.
Wonderful to hear her touch, instantly and comfortably in tune with the composition…..years of practice and study…and an intuitive understanding of the Waltz….likely she danced many in her life….I have no doubt that some young prodigies grow and mature….if the prodigy goes on to develop heart and soul and mind Artistry.
This is quite something. Thank you for sharing. What I love about it is that she is filling his head with ideas and giving him a glimpse of the style which is at once grand and quicksilver. (What would a boy of 10 know about gorgeous salons and exquisite fabrics?) There is a moment at about 7 mins where he is totally absorbed by a mood change. Considering the camera must have been quite intrusive there is a something about the genuineness and vitality of her communication (and his receipt of it) which I find extraordinarily moving.
This video is interesting evidence of the great imagination Gornostaeva reportedly had. She brings so many interesting insights into the period, style and form of the works. The possible background of the works. Here she tries to introduce the student to the bygone world of the salons, the different personalities that might have danced there. She even feels inspired by a Tolstoy novel... The starting point for her is always the music, the sound. Only then do the technical requirements arise (of course, the student is already technically very well equipped). Isn't this beautiful and exactly as it should be? I think that the student here is not sad, but just listening with great interest (who wouldn't?). It's so beautiful to see this scene where teacher and student work, completely absorbed and in love with music... I wish there were more videos of her teaching available.
Fully agree! Wish these were translated in full. Here’s a link to another teaching video you may know about already: th-cam.com/video/sLyUoIIjOok/w-d-xo.html
I now think it's sad that they don'tmake us little kids toying with intellectualism and great ideas in music exercise more often ! Gornostaeva is a big name in pedagogy . Its like playing . Some can reakly communicate and help . Critics and theorists are also very important .
Yes, but she prepared him for the musical choices he would eventually make. You can't just assume that talented kids will figure it out all by themselves. Even phrasing is a first of all a technical challenge that you need to train to develop a natural way of playing. A natural sounding interpretation requires a great deal of (self-)control and confidence, which is not something you learn to do overnight. A young musician may have the perfect/ideal performance in his or her head, but he or she still has to develop all the technical skills necessary to realize this 'ideal interpretation' in a performance.
At that age, it's all about getting the right notes. Some musicians never leave obsessing over the technicalities to actually feeling the music. She was trying to convey to his little age 10 mind that the piece is a waltz. I venture to say that most, even concert pianists, do not envision playing it to one actually waltzing, and even more, have no idea (nor care) what a mazurka is. To them, it's just pretty music and gradually the dance and feel is reduced to "pretty music"

To me he looks so unhappy. He looks tired; tired of concentrating. Perhaps tired, right now of so much practicing. Maybe he gets yelled at at home if he doesn’t practice more - become great ????
To think that the musings of a devotion to artistry would result in a comment like this? What you see on the surface is rarely indicative of what occurs internally. Pfft. Time and time again, it seems that laymen and amateurs _blindly_ and unknowingly envelop themselves with superficialities.
@@paolomarchettini2753How good of you to descend from the lofty heights of your superior perceptions to grace us poor lowly laymen and amateurs with your pearls of wisdom.
All this stupid talk and showing is a waste of time. He has the technique so just listen to other yt performances and combine those for a unique sound. That's what I did
Friends are dumb kids, he is not completely kid but more mature. Plus his passion to push forward and "devour" as much of the musical knowledge as he can separates him from the majority. He's "hungry" like a true afficionado and nothing can quench that life defining urge.

I'm a piano teacher and I sing/hum too. I have a student who hates when I do that....lol. I'm a music director more than a piano teacher.

WOW WOW WOW!
How marvellous to watch how this Lady professor teaches and plays!
She's encouraging him to tell a story with the music. Imagine characters speaking to each other, etc. Really interesting video. Thank you!

“Which is at once grand and quicksilver” You captured the essence of the entire lesson beautifully!
……and He sure still is a fantastic pianist. He really is.

Fantastic. Love this video.

Vasily should play Waltz no. 1 now, as an aged, virtuoso pianist as a tribute to his mentor

This is a difference of mindsets; the human universe of an aged lady cannot be the same as that of a ten-year old. He will get it with time.

He looks nervous, and his mistakes in all the technical sections show it. Still, he had a extraordinary musicality in the lyrical sections

This boy will never enjoy his childhood and be with friends. He’ll be alone practicing for hours and isolated in his own world.
