Vulture's plan was working for 8 years and would probably have kept working because he didn't draw too much attention to himself. Even knocking down the building on Spidey should have worked, how would he know otherwise, unless he read the comic in 1965? It was the Tinkerer's plan to go after the plane and Vulture knew it was a bad plan. So it is no longer the Vulture's fault that the plan doesn't work.

Going for the plane would have worked and was working up until Spiderman showed up. That's part of the problem I have with this list, when you judge the plan by whether or not it fails then you ignore the fact that it HAD to fail and was always going to fail because they are the bad guys and the bad guys lose in the end.
But when you remove the Spiderman factor his plane robbery works fairly well. It's clear he had what it takes to succeed though. And if his henchmen had been able to take out Spider Man then the plane heist works.

44:40 Thanos should have been in the Great Plan category. The reasoning for his plan is absolutely bonkers - but he ACCOMPLISHES WHAT HE SET OUT TO DO. He got the stones. He destroyed half of all life. He destroyed the stones so what he did couldn't be undone. His plan succeeded. He won. Then, if you want to use 'both' versions (even though he was either alluded to in or actually in way more than just the two movies), he *almost* wins again. He got a little bit cocky at the end, which is really the only reason he failed (aka a writing workaround to make him lose).
He's the only one on the entire list who actually did what he set out to do. Everyone in your Great Plan tier eventually loses without actually fully accomplishing their goals first. Thanos only ended up losing because the Avengers went back in time to get replacement stones. I suppose you could critique Thanos for not looking into the future like Dr. Strange and seeing the SINGULAR WAY he could have lost, but you didn't do that. He had a great plan, I'm sticking to it.

He only loses because the Tchalla’s body washes up on the borders of a rival leader, a rival leader who decides to preserve the body of his sworn enemy, and then help Tchalla’s family who managed to steal a fruit when they turn to him for safety. Considering Killmonger had NO way of knowing the internal politics of Wakanda, I think that’s enough to give him a pass.

The best defence I can imagine would be that he really got cocky because dealing with super beings I don’t think will ever get old and casual for ordinary people,so now that he’s defeated someone who is considered if not one at the moment of battle. Like a protective parent. A father figure. That would be building off of the themes of the first movie.
Also, I would have kept everything in the arcade. Focused on the video game aspect of things. Maybe a fear of getting replaced by a newer game. That was also a forgotten theme in the first movie that drove Turbo to become a villain.

for zemo although the plan we saw play out depended on a number of coincidences, I assume that if things had played out differently he would’ve adapted - basically he didn’t necessarily plan out for the events we saw but he excels at adapting on the fly and coming out on top. And also now that we know that he had a butler running around, its possible that there was coordination involved that helped the coincidences play out (like the EMP delivery happening right when he needed it)

He doesn't bother to destroy the fin, it's almost like an afterthought to him. And, his plan results in a straight-up massacre of Yondu's entire crew, with Kraglin the sole survivor. If that's not a disaster, I don't know what is.
Also, everyone outside of the Ravagers who he talks to never take him seriously. So there's also that.

I would actually argue that, ironically, Loki's plan in Avengers is fine (and only backfires as said because of Coulson and the fact that he doesn't take the tactical advantage of actually defending the machine on Stark Tower in the final battle). Up until that point, the plan is going pretty smoothly, for what it is, though I would imagine he would have a better plan if the whole "also get the Tesseract for Thanos and you are obliged to use the Chitauri army" didn't factor in.
In Thor 1 and Dark World he's working on the fly, so not really much planning in it (though whatever he does in Dark World to get the throne, it works!). But Ragnarok - betraying Thor out of nowhere when its established that Loki probably doesn't want to stay on Sakaar either. Not his smartest move. And what was his plan for overthrowing the Grandmaster anyway.
