Love this! I was born in PI then moved to USA then moved to AUSTRALIA 🇦🇺 but now I’m feeling the need to learn Tagalog! Please continue to share your step by step journey !
Hi Jocelyn, I’m Leidz from the philippines. Stumbled on your vlog cos I was learning japanese and was curious how it was like for people who were learning my language (tagalog) and wow you did so good! Napaka husay! Para sa mga ingles ang pangunahing wika, mahirap talaga matuto mag tagalog kasi sobrang magkaiba sila. Natuwa ako sa video mo kaya ngayon ako ay bagong subscriber na.
When you said there is no word for transgender or cis gender. Actually there is, in Pre-Colonial Old Tagalog. It's very uncommon but there is a word for it. "Pina-laki" since before and you won't see this on the Internet since only old people knows these terms and sometimes it is very rare to see it, Filipinos see gender differently. It was the Spaniards who actually made the Philippines backwards in that culture and introduced Christianism. That's why we have gender neutral statements. Like "Siya" "Niya" "Ikaw" "Ako" those don't have gender specific. It just means who you are as a person. Not as a gender.
@他妈的穆斯林,穆罕默德和真主 "Primitive ang Pilipinas noon." Gago, hindi Primitive ang mga tao noon. May mga sarili silang batas, kultura at mga kaharian, at May sarili din silang mga pananaw sa buhay. Katulad ng Kaharian ng Tondo, Butuan, Ma'i at Sulu at iba pang mga Kaharian dati. Potang inang to. Wag kang bobo at wag kang mag magaling.
Kolonyal ang pagiisip mo if ginagamit mo ang word na "primitive" to describe a society lol Anyhoo, I'd like to add for your information and for the benefit of everyone na rin na there is evidence of "transness" in pre-colonial society and language. Hindi man siya usapin ng "equality" pero evidence na rin siya in determining the world view of pre-colonial "Filipinos" (at this point let's call them Filipinos na rin even though they weren't). These Filipinos were specifically called the Teduray tribe. In their tribe they call "transness" as "mentefuwaley" which means "one who becomes". For transwoman, they call them "mentefuwaley libun", libun meaning woman, hence "one who becomes a woman". For transman, they call them a "mentefuwaley lagey" or the "one who becomes a man". So in essence, LGBTQ narratives are not new in post-colonial Philippines. Mentefuwaleys and the concept of gender & sexuality has been in existence long before we were called "Philippines" and "Filipinos"
Yet...you govto Catholic Church. If it was me I would reject that crap. Lapu Lapu was a true hero. Also you can tell HE's a male. Practical not backwards. Common sense. But thankfully you did not adopt gender for all nouns ..
Hi Isabel! Thank you do much for watching! I'm very happy that I took the time to learn and now I can speak with Lola in Tagalog. I am learning more and more about my culture and language everyday
My mom told me to find these videos because my dad married her (she's Filipino) like 12 years ago and I told her I want to be able to speak to my Lola without relying on her, so thank you (:
We have to understand also that the trend of conversational Tagalog is moving towards Taglish (Tagalog mixed with English) so most LGBT words, which are recent definitions, remain in English.
Really really like the way you are approaching learning, I'm in my 40s and was wanting to learn this, you gave me hope, you are using some very effective learning skills, I'm going to give it a shot, thank you for sharing this video
Hello Jocelyn. I actually am currently living in the Philippines and in grade 9, yet I never passively absorbed the language around me. So I am not doing the best in my Tagalog class, where we have to read tagalog stories and watch tagalog videos and I AM STRUGGLING. So I want to do my best to become at least semifluent so I won’t have to rely on the translations of my friends and google translate.
Omg, I'm grade 8 and I have the exact same problem. Google lens is my one true savior in fil and AP and my friends are not very good in English either so I feel guilty since they're trying for me. 🥹
The brilliance of this video is that you have put together a really efficient system for diving into learning any language, Tagalog specifically. It is a language that, due to its mottled history, is notoriously all over the place. Modular word order, fast-evolving slang, borrowed foreign words, and multiple verb modes (not just tense) are enough to confuse and intimidate newcomers. There's no central, monolithic standard of learning (even in the Philippines) , but your video is a fantastic place to start. ;;Being musical also helps much more than you think-- fun songs repeated throughout the day are effective tools in reinforcing vocabulary and usage. Movies are also great: comedy movies usually have LOTS of visual slapstick so the entry level to understanding them is pretty low. (Learning-wise, ignore the wackier characters and listen to the plainer-sounding dialog-- say, parents and older siblings) :: Thank you so much for making this.
Hi Jocelyn! Bakla is the Filipino translation for gay, not for the entire LGBTQ+ Community. And yes, there are a lot of English words that do not have Filipino translation😅. That is why Filipino recognizes the use of "transliterasyon", or how a local spells a word, based on how he or she pronounces it. For example, in Filipino, it is acceptable for driver to be spelled as "drayber". The same goes for quarantine, computer and many more. Anyways, I hope you enjoy learning the Filipino language! Mabuhay!
Hey! Thank you so much for your comment. I did mention in the video that bakla means homosexual, but as far as I've researched, I couldn't find any other Filipino words for LGBTQ+. Thank you for introducing me to the use of "transliterasyon". Mabuhay!
JocelynJocelyn... Try learning Malay (bahasa Melayu) in one week. About 1000 words are similar to Tagalog.... Eg anak. Lima, takut, Aku. Batu. Mahal etc. However the grammatical structure is much simplified. In the last 50 years Modern Standard Malay also absorbed thousands from English loan words. Eg Aseksual (asexual), gender, hipertensi. Intensif (intensive), final, militari, kulinari, emosional, profesional, revolusi..... 😊 It is understood in Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, South Thailand n Indonesia... ie by around 300 million people. *_Cuba_* la!!! (try it out)...
just because you learned Tagalog in 7 days does not mean everybody will do the same. to be fare, i think 99 percent of people will not learn Tagalog in 7 days.......i think this is called click bate.......
Everything that you’re saying about gender neutral that’s not all true. It all depends on where you go to in the Philippines, because the word biute means gay in the Philippines as well and that is for boys not gay girls. You have a lot of misinformation in this video.
My name is Jocelyn and my pronouns are..... I tried to focus to the video as long as I can but can't really get over the first sentence.. it's so unnecessary and no one cares to be honest.
everytime I learn a new word in tagalog I swear to god I feel like im casting a magic spell

Actually gender is important to the Philippines but its just for short the words the Filipinos use.
It's just sad that your parents didn't teach you Tagalog. But I guess they have reasons.
