You know what.... I just watched this video because it's you; because I've been learning Spanish since I was in high school and I'm gonna be 34 this year and I'm still not where I want to be with the language. But you kind of just made me think that I'm probably learning too passively. The idea of repetition and really going hard to drive home what you're learning - that is very good advice. A lot of us have the problem of only being able to understand and not speak the language, and that is for lack of hammering home the grammar and the "essentials/basics" and also simply practicing speaking
yesss for spanish it can be pretty easy to find resources! you should def listen to music/watch tv in spanish because if helps you learn how it’s actually spoken. i struggled for a long time because i spoke like i swallowed a textbook lol but learning a more colloquial way to speak is better for travel or meeting new people.
I’ve been “try learning Spanish” most of my life, my mom tried teaching me and I’ve listened to Spanish learning videos on repeat and well I still know very little Spanish and have never held a conversation. But now well I need to learn be able to hold a basic introductory conversation in Hindi in 7 days, I’m 4 days in now and I can speak more Hindi than Spanish, I have chosen the things that I should be able to understand and speak for a first conversation like “Hello, my name is” and have written it down in Hindi then English to fill up a page and now I can actually remember and spell out almost everything I have written down, I am feeling really confident in this upcoming communication.
Yes, this is my issue as well. I do it passively and that's the reason, after almost 6 years, I'm still struggling. You've inspired me!! I used to love learning languages when I was in college. I at one point was fluent in Spanish but haven't used it in such a long time. I'm feeling motivated to get back fluent in Spanish AND learn Italian for an upcoming trip to Italy! Thanks.
There’s a few languages I want to learn and with time the list will likely grow… I took French from middle school to my sophomore year of high school but was never great at listening and speaking. I considered learning Spanish bc it’s the 2nd most spoken language in the US but somehow i fell in love with Korean. I sometimes get criticized for choosing Korean before learning Spanish (which is also on my list) but then i realize that if i follow what everyone else is saying instead of what i want-I’ll learn nothing. Never fully committing to any new language. Plus you never know where life may take you. I might need Korean someday. This video came at a perfect time. Thanks
I look forward to meeting you one day. Born and living in Ghana, I got my DALF C2 last year. I now speak some 8 languages in total ... And you were definitely a big inspiration when I started this "madness" back in 2013. Thanks and all the best to you! 🥴
@@bashhouseofdenim2833 Closest I've gotten to posting a video of myself speaking several languages (anywhere other than on my WhatsApp status) was a recording December, 2022, Ig. Needless to say, that video was never posted because I didn't quite like the quality. 🙈
@@B-Proficient Yes o ... But only in English and French. My Spanish and Portuguese should be at two different ends of the intermediate 'spectrum'. Twi comes naturally now since it's a language I've been speaking from childhood. My Ga and German aren't too fluent but I can get my (simple) point across. My Russian (like my Arabic, Dutch etc.) just takes a lot of effort and time even to read the most basic sentence... to talk more of understanding what I would have read. 😰
Thank you for making me feel so seen! My mother introduced me to Spanish and French when I was a child. I ditched the French early and devoted myself to Spanish. I added American Sign Language to my list in high school and Chinese to my life in my early 20's. I stopped nurturing them in my late 20's. In my 30's, they spinning the block on me! I just learn from putting the language in my face long enough and studying 90% verbs and 10% nouns and focus on what makes the language different from mine and it’s family tree and also learn it in the other languages I speak and knowing I’ll know more of it in time if I keep finding out what I don’t know
High school Spanish teacher/aspiring polyglot here. Not sure if you have any formal study in language acquisition, but your tips are spot on, and your passion and motivation for learning languages shines brightly and infectiously! hi, I'm from Russia.I'm learning English and I've also started learning French. Thank you very much for your video. Good luck to everyone who is learning other languages now! I believe we can do it!
Aren't you terrified that one language will override the other. I had a brain fart in my Japanese tutoring and started spotting out French for some reason.
i’m learning arabic and whenever i try to speak my brain fills in the blanks with portuguese. same happens with spanish when im speaking portuguese. it just takes time, you’ll get there!
Language interference is a thing.😂 But it's also fun. When you're detailed and focused, it happens less. I wouldn't trade it for anything. Language learning rocks!😊
I often start a thought in German, fill in some words with Spanish, and then remember that I'm supposed to be learning Irish and try and translate it but then by the time I also remember that thought was something I wanted to say out loud and I try to translate it into English I've lost the thought entirely.
This happened a lot when i tried to learn two languages at once and i was sometimes making sentences and it made sense if u spike both languages but obviously that isn’t the right thing lol so i just chose the one I preferred and stuck to it:) it was also making me make slower progress now that i just learn one it’s a lot easier and faster to learn for me
Reality hit for me a year in. Then, I fell out of learning the language for 6 months, started back up again 2 months ago. I have a lot I’ve been reviewing, but I’m coming at learning with more patience, like you mentioned.
I needed to see this video. I started learning Portuguese (Brasileiro) over a year ago and I’m so glad I stuck with it. Watching this video inspired me to start practicing more vocally and more intentionally. Thank you!!
I just discovered Language Reactor thanks to you. It's amazing. I was frustrated trying to improve my Portuguese with Netflix but always had to switch between Portuguese and English subtitles. By the was, I am from Belgium but the french part, but I speak Flemish as well :)

Hi there, I am so happy to know that other girls in this world have the same lifestyle and passion as me. I am on my 4th journey with Portuguese, I speak French as my second language (fluent), Spanish, and English. I am shy and I am not fluent yet, and I think I am gonna apply your method to get there and pursue Deutsch, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Arabic... You are inspiring. Thank you!
Thanks so much for this video Jo. I decided to pick up learning Spanish last year after dropping it years ago. While doing Spanish lessons I thought let's add French too! lol. For a while I thought I was crazy for trying to do both, but this video makes me more confident in learning more than one language.
I learning english beacuse is so essential in my studies of college, so I'm watching your videos and the others channels, this is helping me a lot in my process of learning english. Thank you!
I don't have a deep reason that explain why i want learn portuguese and japanese. I have that feeling that make me be curious about others cultures (I Love anime❤😊), in this moment portuguese and japanese language. Is Just that. Understand others in a different language than yours is AMASING✨.
Omgosh me too! I love anime and I want to learn Japanese and hopefully visit one day. I’m also trying to learn Portuguese just cuz it’s similar to Spanish and my niece already knows it too lol. Good luck to us 😁👏🏼💪🏼
I basically was a bilingual person since birth and I never ever cared about English. Never. I was learning it in classes, but it was just some basic stuff and I wasn’t really passionate abt it. I was in grade 8 ig when i’ve actually started to care about English, because I had only one year to choose what do I want to do with my life. Yeah, in my motherland we can go to college since we’ve done grade 9. So, I decided to be an IT guy and that was a point when I started to realize that I NEED to know English. I’ve got a tutor and started learning. It was half a year when I started studying for English and I was pushed in a situation when me, my lil sister and my pregnant mom have to leave our country just because we wanted to be safe.(there is a war in my motherland now) My English wasn’t fluent AT ALL in that moment of time, but I actually knew something and I was the person that took responsibility for all my family(besides my father, he couldn’t move out from our country) because I was the only one who understand English. I moved to Italy for half a year and there is the moment when my English started to improve. But it was not because of environment(in town where I lived there was really few people that could possibly speak English,so) it was because I started to get all my social media, all of my activities in internet in English. There is the point of my comment. If you are not interesting in content in that language that you learn you will never ever reach your goal. And if you’re interested, now I live in Canada, I’m 17 and I go to school with Canadians. I do the same thing as they do, I can read, I can write and I can understand. Yeah, my English is not the best, it could be better and it’s gonna be in the future.
Hey Jo!

I'm attempting to learn my first second language which is Arabic misri and gotta say you're the reason I've gone with Pimsleur and on top of that I found an amazing tutur on Preply, Somaia! She is really really awesome! I've hit that kinda slump that you talked about there and I have to say Somaia told me the same thing and I'm kinda recognizing this part of the journey. For me its not a slump much as its a realization of what it actually takes to really learn a language/culture. It's a lot! But I've not stopped having an awesome time learning with a new friend! So thanks Jo! 🤘👿🤘
When I was much younger I was fluent in German. I tripped over your channel today. I think I will try your approach out to see if I can re-learn what I once knew.

oh my GOD, this is amazing. first of all, I'd like to say that I'm a huge fan of yours and second, the fact that you said my country makes me 10 times more interested in your Flemish learning journey. I'm originally from Suriname and we do speak Dutch and from what I hear it can be a challenging language or even an understandable language, which ever one it is, I'm sure the journey will be well worth it. the languages that I currently would like to learn and are learning are French, Italian and Turkish. Have fun on this Flemish learning journey. I hope that one day you can come to Suriname and speak Dutch.
This is by far the best video i've ever watched about learning languages, not kidding. I've watched SO many of them yet this one takes the cake without even asking for it.
I took the learning test and literally was all of them. Which is true. Due to what I’m learning depends on what helps me to learn it easier is the method I use. E. G. If it’s an auto book I can’t sit and listen to it. I rather get a physical book or ebook. If it’s a webinar I can listen with no problem.
Dude, I used to feel the same way until I found methods that actually work for ME and learnt to see it as a sorta superpower. I currently speak portuguese, english, japanese, spanish and italian. Here's what I do: grab every positive adhd trait, weaponize it. Exploit it to a maximum, just like the goverment does to our funds. Being atypical just means you gotta find ways to navigate life differently and we do, cause we depend on it. That makes us more resilient than typical ppl. Anything a neurotypical person can do, we can re-invent and better!
I have seen your books out there but just assumed it was another person who doesn't actually do the hard work and pretends it is simple for everyone (the "fluent in five days" kind of BS we see out there). The moment you started talking about patience (more so with ourselves than anything) I was intrigued THEN when you mentioned the whole having to let a language stew in your brain for some months or years before it all suddenly clicks resonated with me so much. I have gotten to a point where in starting a new language I remind myself "you are going to get frustrated and confused in a few months and walk away from it and this is good as you need that time for your brain to rewire" and it works every time. I am studying Akkadian and Middle Egyptian right now both of which I started learning years ago and found unfathomably difficult. Now in coming back to it something has reorganized itself in my brain and the grammar makes total sense. Can I explain it? Absolutely not ha ha. So nice to see a genuinely fun fellow language nerd! I am a convert and I apologize for assuming the worst! :/
Hey! Glad you gave me a second chance 😂❤️ I really am shocked at the brain and it’s fantastically long process for learning. It’s all about patience I swear 🫶🏾 good luck with your journey! I’ll see you on the next videos I hope
Anyone here wanna study Spanish or French or even Mandarin together with me? I’ve studied French for 8 months, Spanish for 2 and half years, and Mandarin for like 2 weeks bahaha
Hi from Ukraine 👋 Jo I am curious how much time it took you to get fluency in your first foreign language, and how much time it takes now to get fluency in some new language?
Hiii! Hope you're well! It takes a while! Like at least 1 - 2 years if I'm studying far from where it's spoken! If I'm living in the place, I'll start picking it up in half the time because i'm fully immersed!
I speak French and English on good level , got Spanish lessons at university years ago. Turkish is my native language. Working for tourism 17 years now but I couldn't advance neither on German nor in Russian due to laziness. ( this 2 language is the most important for our clientele in hotellery right now) I felt motivated after seeing your videos even I am 42 now 😅❤
Love this. Controversial opinion: if you're a really shy or reserved person, it's gonna be a slog. I think you have to enjoy people and be outgoing (big fire sign energy lol). I don't think this is mentioned enough that you have to have a passion and creativity for talking and inventing and enjoying your own native language first - some people haven't got that down first cos it's just not in their nature.
Here's the irony: I WAS shy. I had to outgrow it. When I was a kid I was incredibly introverted, I literally grew up in hiding being undocumented, and being the different one in every room I stepped in. It was skill that allowed me to cultivate confidence and be more "outgoing." That and the awareness that everyone is self conscious, so it evens everything out.
I’m learning Dutch, Italian, and Hebrew. I also want to learn French and pick up the Scottish Gaelic again. Oh, and I just signed up for classes to get a degree in cybersecurity. And the knitting and crocheting. And the ukulele. It’s fine. It’s all fine.
Why does everyone want to Own the method? Ollie tries to convince people HE invented learning a language with stories. Hmmm, my mother used stories to learn English 70 years ago, Kato Blomb used and suggested stories, and she lived long before Ollie. Some people get on YT saying They invented chunking, while ignoring or not know of The Lexical Approach book which came out decades before their video.
I love learning new languages. I started with learning Spanish and French in 2019 and have now added Finnish, Korean, Swahili, and German to the list. Most of my learning happens on Duolingo.
Thanks
Same! From the French in school and not being good at it, to feeling pressure to learn Spanish, but learning Korean instead.
I have watched videos of people explaining how to study languages and this is by far the most detailed and helpful. Thanks. Am learning Chinese, 你好
I look forward to meeting you one day. Born and living in Ghana, I got my DALF C2 last year. I now speak some 8 languages in total ... And you were definitely a big inspiration when I started this "madness" back in 2013. Thanks and all the best to you! 🥴
Wow C2!
Hey @hamiltonblankson do you have your audios on Spotify?

@@bashhouseofdenim2833 Closest I've gotten to posting a video of myself speaking several languages (anywhere other than on my WhatsApp status) was a recording December, 2022, Ig.

You have inspired me to document my journey and to understand the gift I truly have.🥰 This is my first time on your channel and I look forward to more of your content.
You are an inspiration just like our beloved Jo ;)
@@rompecabeza1509 I'm honored to be equally inspired!
Wow, I`m Flemish!! How cool you understand my language!!
What helps getting through the hard times is discipline or setting up a good habit routine for learning. Plus everything else that Jo said.
So true! Habit is more powerful than anything else!
How are you all not excited!! She is amazing!!
You just dropped the entire goldmine. Thank you for this!
Omg as an italian, you're italian is FANTASTIC, SO REAL!!
Planning on sharing a clip of this with my students at the start of next school year. 😉
hi, I'm from Russia.I'm learning English and I've also started learning French. Thank you very much for your video. Good luck to everyone who is learning other languages now! I believe we can do it!
Spanish...I have dreams of speaking fluently but I am definitely not there yet.
I am so happy I found your channel!! I’m learning Korean but I’ve gotten stuck between upper beginner/lower intermediate.
Lmao same, but for me spanish and chinese
*I COULDN'T FIND YOUR CHANNELS! I'M SO SO GLAD TO HAVE FOUND YOU AGAIN!!! OMGOSHHH!*

Hi there! I just started learning Brazilian Portuguese. How confident in Portuguese do you feel after one year, what would you rank yourself?
I remember when Jo started the 21 day challenge. I started it but never got further than the first day. Hopefully will try that again 😊
I just discovered Language Reactor thanks to you. It's amazing. I was frustrated trying to improve my Portuguese with Netflix but always had to switch between Portuguese and English subtitles. By the was, I am from Belgium but the french part, but I speak Flemish as well :)

How’s your learning going? Good choice going with Egyptian though, it’s definitely the easiest dialect to learn!

Learning languages (speaking) with social phobia is definitely not easy ... I hate being scared of attention and judgment (in writing and talking).
Thank you for the tips. Currently learning a second language, Spanish
french is just not progressing. A1 to A2 is difficult
my best tip learning french is stop and learn spanish. Hope this helps👍🏻

Why does everyone want to Own the method? Ollie tries to convince people HE invented learning a language with stories. Hmmm, my mother used stories to learn English 70 years ago, Kato Blomb used and suggested stories, and she lived long before Ollie.
