A cool game I play is called "Coffee Talk" (on Steam). I change the language to French and basically it is a story based game where you serve customers coffee and listen to their stories. It is all text based (so you read the dialogue instead of listen), but I find it very enjoyable and before you know it, you've spent a couple of hours on it, reading their conversations. It is a great game.
Having tried for 40+ years to learn French, repeatedly going back to course books, the key breakthrough for me was the LingQ app. After one year of daily study (first thing in the morning with my coffee in bed), I'm probably at the B2 level now in listening comprehension. Shadowing has greatly improved my pronunciation and I've almost completed the Pimsleur course. I'm now confident enough to begin speaking with an online teacher.
@praywithoutceasing4939 Yes I would definitely recommend LingQ. As an engineer I am very good at bottom-up learning: taking one brick at a time in order to build a house from the foundation up. But I realised (after 40 years!) that that approach does not work for languages. I needed the top-down approach, which is how children learn languages. The secret is to not stress out over making mistakes or by trying to understand everything before moving on. Just let it wash over you. The brain is supreme at extracting patterns from data (which is what it is designed for) and over the course of a few months of daily exposure to what is called "comprehensible input", neural pathways automatically form. You won't notice improvement on a daily basis, but month-on-month you'll be astounded by how much more you can understand. And it all happens without really *trying* to learn. The LingQ app is a community-driven platform (meaning that there's endless content for all levels) and is designed around the "comprehensible input" approach to learning. Each day I listen and read a new piece of content. Sure I might need to look up the meaning of a word here and there, but I don't try to learn it. The act of seeing/hearing the word in context is enough to anchor the word in your subconscious. Eventually you just know that you know that word without translation. No flash cards, no vocabulary lists. I'm going to adopt the same top-down approach to other fields of learning, like jazz piano which is similarly inaccessible using a bottom-up approach. It's been quite a revelation to me.
@@andread.dominguez290 yeah I paid an annual fee which gives you access to all languages (dozens), not just French. There is a free version that doesn't get you very far but at least allows you to try. Well worth the fee in my opinion if you're serious about learning a language. For pronunciation, you practice 'shadowing' which is simply to repeat out loud what you hear as close as possible. The Pimsleur app is even better than LingQ for pronunciation practice because it performs real-time analysis of your pronunciation and grades how good it is. Consequently I've been using LingQ and Pimsleur together.
@@andread.dominguez290 LingQ is good for pronunciation practice by shadowing the speaker. But you should also try Pimsleur which is designed around active speaking. It also has a voice analyser which will rank how well you are pronouncing phrases/words.
Easy French Channel is really amazing! They make learning French enjoyable and put a lot of cultural aspects on their videos… also it’s based on real people talk.
One of the TikTok teachers says to watch French shows. Watch the episode 2-3 times without the English subtitles and then the last time with the subtitles. That’s really helped me understand
Me too. My favourite shows right now are Supernatural and One Tree Hill. I can now say “kill”, name every monster, call people idjits in 47 different ways, and referee a basketball game. Sadly there are no job interviews in supernatural or one tree hill. Heh 😅
Assez troublant.
It IS the most beautiful language! Yes you are my kindred spirit on this. People always come for me. Chinese Mandarin is my mother tongue, and English my daily operating language (learned it at age 11). Currently trying to learn French. It's not easy for someone whose mother tongue is so different. But it is SO satisfying when I speak, and French people can understand me and it's just...an amazingly powerful feeling. Not to mention the world of incredible French literature that becomes available to you, once you master this language (I'm still in the beginning stage).

It truly is a self motivating thing. I took French from 7th grade to 11th grade. It didn't stick, but maybe some did cuz I knew everything in the first few lessons. To be fair german is one of my native languages, and its very similar to danish, but 2 months in i read harry potter in danish and understood around 80-95% of whats going on depending on what the topic/scene was. In 6 years i barely got to B2 french, but now im thinking of using my same self study methods to reach fluency (its possible, even at an old age. my best friends dad is now fluent as her mom is french and they speak french at home) i already have a good starting point given im at b2 :) merci pour ton video et bonne chance! I just restarted studying French literary 2 days ago, I have classes 5 times a week 4 hours each. I love songs in french, I already talk english and my native language os Spanish. Like you said it's a personal goal of mine since I was a child❤
Your journey mirrors my own, but you have gone much further. I got a French Bible and a French-only dictionary. I watched cartoons in French. I watched movies in French. You are right about subtitles and audio translations. The audio translations tend to match the mouth movements better and the intended meaning, whereas the subtitles tend to be better literal translations. Both are very educational. For cartoons, I recommend "Annabelle's Wish", which has been uploaded to TH-cam. The music is charming. By the way, I love your eye makeup.
Thanks for this video! I’m a French major and after French 202 (fourth semester of French in college) and in 301 and 302 it’s all completely immersive and the professor says words we were never taught and expects us to know them and even though I got through my third year with good grades, admittedly I learned nothing and am in French 401 (seventh semester) and am now realizing something has to change because I’m about to graduate with a major that I’m not even competent in.
I love the authenticity of this❤ truly encouraged me! u guys get me back here to tell u how it goes guess that'll make me put some holiday time to use and get out of bedd

This is actually really helpful - I passed A1 4 years ago but now I need to re-learn French in order to ensure they let me stay in Canada - I have around a year to pass the B2 so it's nice to see someone else make it as well!
I love these tips! The whole journey you shared in the video shows how important it is to try things and to not be afraid of finding a new strategy once the old one isn't working anymore. Great content!!
I'm glad I stumbled on this video. This really mirrors my journey, I'm just a little bit behind you, but I got plenty of great tips here for keeping my study time varied and enjoyable! Bon voyage!
It's validating to see that we sHare so many activities that help immerse us in the language. Makes me feel like I'm on the right path. I talk to the FB messenger ai we play french learning games. Listening and studying lyrics and shadows listening, journaling, and the Bible which I did more of in french. I struggle with grammar/structure but my vocab is pretty good.
im french but youre video helped me to practice my english haha, et bonne chance pour ton apprentissage du Françcais, en plus tu as une très bonne prononciation bravo !
I like when you speak french in the end. I'd like to listen to you talking french sur les sujets qui tu interessee(?). In this way we can learn from each other!
if subtitles are not available on a youtube video in french, you can use the windows caption app. as long as you have the french language downloaded on windows, it will automatically subtitle whatever you are watching on any platform, subtitles or not.
@@SuzanAirbnb in the language and region area of windows settings, it allows you to install other languages on your system with English. once you install French, you can pull up the live captions with Ctrl+Win+L, and set it to French. It will auto-caption anything in French no matter where you are watching it.
This is probably the best advice to get to B2 I believe. Also, make sure you dont get lazy when you're talking to yourself or you hear something or a word or a phrase you dont understand, make sure to look it up!
Well done Corinna! Thank you for this video. I'm an older person living alone in France and I struggle with both the language and self confidence, especially since my husband died. You're right about doing Duolingo, at least in part, just to maintain the streak. Also, the voices on Duo are cartoonish. It was better before they changed the format. I'm going to try several if not all of your suggestions. Thanks again.
Excellent French Pronunciation.
I concur, excellent pronunciation. Still I wouldn't call it a fully native-sounding accent, there are still traces of English in the r's and the nasal vowels are a tiny bit off sometimes, though absolutely nothing that hinders comprehension. I'm sure you'll get there very soon though, it's only a matter of listening a lot for a long time (speaking from my experience of learning English)
Thank you, 100 times thank you. I'm going through the A2 at my local AF and as you said, the classes have become very book-centric and I feel we're missing a lot of stuff like grammar and verb tenses. I feel we're like learning to "understand French" rather than express our own ideas in French. Maybe that's their initial approach? I don't know. I was dabbling between a Lingoda Sprint or "normal" classes and decided to jump on the AF and I think it was a good start. But will definitely go through the YT channels and your advices to get better results. Merci beaucoup et à bientôt!
As a french, the last 10 secondes are so cute.

I did this while I learn English. Until I don't even realize that I am learning the language in everyday basis. Now I am convinced to apply this method to learn more languages (and French is on the line 😀)
As a native french speaker this is great! Your French is also very very good! I'm trying to learn my third language (Spanish) and seeing someone learning another language than English gives me motivation! Bravo très beau travail! Tu peux être très fière de toi! Salut!
Thanks this was a really good summary of what's out there, and good advice and motivation. I've found 'Coffee Break French' is excellent (both YT and Podcast) , 'French- Speak French with Moi' (a podcast, sometimes the recording is not very good quality which actually makes it a bit more realistic) and, 'French Learning Accelerator' for repetition and speed (both YT and Podcast)
Thanks for this. I did an online berlitz course over the summer and I was a bit frustrated. The instructors were good, especially two of them. Maybe if I practiced more early on I would’ve been more successful and less frustrated. I try again with your recommendations. After I learn some of my wife’s native language Tagalog.
Hey Corinna! This is a great video. I’m not learning French personally but I did find everything you said to ring super true to my experience learning Spanish (which I basically learned by bingeing youtube videos). I loved that you included your personal story of learning French but then also gave really clear takeaways for the video at the end that people can action to get results. I’m also just happy that I have found another Australian in the language TH-cam space. Are you learning or planning on learning any other languages apart from French?
I'm English in Canada and I'm going to teach myself french ( I was at least beginner level , learning and speaking but not writing until I was 15 in high school ) . I would like to start travelling and also possibly open up job opportunities - I would also like to learn Spanish and I love french and Spanish music . 😮 Def gonna download this .
It depends very much on the teacher... I got at c1 only from school alone and Idk what id do without it since with french its harder and you need help along the way you dont get selfstudying
I love love love Duolingo. It helps me so much with new vocabulary and memorization. Since I am a gamer, I kinda treat Duolingo as a game and I love grinding XP. Beside doing Duolingo, I also converse daily in French with my boyfriend who is a native speaker and he helps me with my pronunciation and even slangs. Same with you, I am currently taking offline class from my local AF, and yes I agree on the different ‘levels’ from the teachers, but I still enjoy the class because I can meet new friends who are also learning French and we can talk and share materials. I treat AF as the place for me to learn more about grammars also because my native bf couldn’t really explain to me about sentences structures, grammar formulas, etc 😂 It’s been 8 months only for me but I feel like I can already ‘function’ in french mode now and I’m super proud of myself! Going to start my B1 class soon ❤ Good luck for both of us!
I learned French the hard way in the late 1980s looking up words in the dictionary and then Petit Robert and Becherelle rouge. I was reading after 1 year. There was not internet then and not even and electronic translator nor teachers where I lived. Now trying to learn Greek since live in Cyprus. I find Duolingo is crucial because it keeps it interesting. Boredom and difficulty as you said are things that make people stop. But the rest of what you say is true. Try many different things all at the same time. I am trying to pass the A2 test. One thing I like to do is read books for 5 and 6 years old. That keeps it interesting. Look up words you don’t know. Then look up those words in a Greek-Greek dictionary. That’s important because many words have lots of different meanings and the translator just gives one. As for TH-cam I do that too but obviously there are very few compared to French. Merci
Bonjour Corinna Jacqueline!

same, since I also speak Spanish I feel like it's gonna make it easier for me, in the grammar department at least.
@@JosiahAlexander-br6pn happy to hear that. I have been trying to understand the fulcrum of the grammar rules of French for a couple of days..
"You’ve taken this topic to a whole new level!"
I read the French Bible too.
@@BijouDeLaMer Awesome! Is it hard for you to understand it?
I've read it fully in English. It helps that I know the content, so not really.
Thank you for the tips! Im learning another language (not french) but these tips really are great to learn any language!😊
Hope things are going better for you
You have been so helpful with this. Thank you.
I love the authenticity of this❤
truly encouraged me!
u guys get me back here to tell u how it goes
guess that'll make me put some holiday time to use and get out of bedd
A fantastic video, I love how you describe your learning journey and your look also! Thank you for giving your time to talk about your language learning experiences.
This is actually really helpful - I passed A1 4 years ago but now I need to re-learn French in order to ensure they let me stay in Canada - I have around a year to pass the B2 so it's nice to see someone else make it as well!
I am also trying to do the same. How is your studies coming along?
How’s your learning as you’re closing in on a year?
Set aside negative thoughts and commit to action. This is fabulous advice for learning ANYTHING new. ❤
Bon voyage!
Same here! She's pretty awesome.
It's validating to see that we sHare so many activities that help immerse us in the language. Makes me feel like I'm on the right path. I talk to the FB messenger ai we play french learning games. Listening and studying lyrics and shadows listening, journaling, and the Bible which I did more of in french. I struggle with grammar/structure but my vocab is pretty good.
repetition and reading is very useful for language learning
im french but youre video helped me to practice my english haha, et bonne chance pour ton apprentissage du Françcais, en plus tu as une très bonne prononciation bravo !
1:09 Oui ! French is the most beautiful language!! And I was on Duolingo and worried too much about my streak.
Most of these tips are great for learning any language. Thanjs for taking the time to share.
I like when you speak french in the end. I'd like to listen to you talking french sur les sujets qui tu interessee(?). In this way we can learn from each other!
Love the advice. Best I've seen
YOUR VIDEO HELPED ME GETTING CLARITY OVER METHOD RESOURCES TO STUDY
if subtitles are not available on a youtube video in french, you can use the windows caption app.
as long as you have the french language downloaded on windows, it will automatically subtitle whatever you are watching on any platform, subtitles or not.
can you say more about how to do this? I don't know how to download the french language on windows...
@@SuzanAirbnb in the language and region area of windows settings, it allows you to install other languages on your system with English.
once you install French, you can pull up the live captions with Ctrl+Win+L, and set it to French. It will auto-caption anything in French no matter where you are watching it.
Thank you! I will give it a try
Beautiful video and the best part, this applies to learning any language. Merci, gracias, thank you, grazie!
Duolingo is fun for beginners to make friends with a new language.
thnx for sharing useful tips and links of other apps/channels! Merci
This is probably the best advice to get to B2 I believe. Also, make sure you dont get lazy when you're talking to yourself or you hear something or a word or a phrase you dont understand, make sure to look it up!
Thank you! And yes that's so true and a really good tip!!
This is INCREDIBLE advice thank you!
tres incroyable
Girl! I needed this video! You gave me some good ideas to keep me moving!
I LOVE this, thanks for letting me know about Taylor I enjoy his videos a lot. Merci beaucoup
Merci beaucoup pour la vidéo!
thank you for sharing this! your suggestions are really helpful ❤
Very real review, I can relate to most and will try the language reactor extension. 👍✌️
Thanks for this video. It's given me a push to look beyond Duolingo
C'est difficile, mais pas impossible. Tu as réussi l'accent, bravo. Merci pour tes conseils
This video is absolutely helpful! Thank you
this helps so much! you shared a lot of unique and useful tips
As a french, the last 10 secondes are so cute.
I agree with you that consistency is key when going about learning a new language. I’ve been using Immersive Translate every day to study Vietnamese, and already I’m making a lot of progress. Immersive Translate is a great way to supplement your language learning journey, and I highly recommend it.
I learn french and English. Thank you so much.
Thank you for sharing your experience with French, je suis étonné de voir à quel point votre français est bon, felicitations .Vous avait raison lire la Bible en français cet excellent 🤗
I did this while I learn English. Until I don't even realize that I am learning the language in everyday basis. Now I am convinced to apply this method to learn more languages (and French is on the line 😀)
That's so incredible! You've got this!!
Bonjour Madame,
This was a very informative and interesting video indeed.
I’ll try out your advice, in my case for learning German. 🇩🇪
Thank you 🙏🏻
Brilliant, merci beaucoup!
Love your determination! And how beautiful that the Bible has been part of your journey. Bless you.
Thank you :) I think I mentioned in the video that I’m not religious though
Learning is boring when we are forced at school to learn. Learning on our own has zero stress involved so we can learn at our own pace.
I’ll say that I did discover some cool French pop songs. Tout Savoir by Ade is my favorite
Excellent tips. Merci beaucoup !
TH-cam recommended me your video at the right time. I’m stuck in A2 since so long. Thank you
Great tips. Thanks.
I learned english and french by watching youtube videos.
Listening is the best way to learn a language.
I'm thoroughly impressed-great job!
Hi there, thanks for the resources and your account of language learning trials and errors! Bon chance everyone
Thanks for the video. It was pretty cool and helpful! 👍
Thank you for this helpful video!
Wow this is a really great video! Thanks 🎉
I treat AF as the place for me to learn more about grammars also because my native bf couldn’t really explain to me about sentences structures, grammar formulas, etc 😂
It’s been 8 months only for me but I feel like I can already ‘function’ in french mode now and I’m super proud of myself! Going to start my B1 class soon ❤
Good luck for both of us!
Wonderful tips
Excellente Video, merci a vous!
Très belle prononciation ! Bravo !
Very helpful, thank you! 🙌✨
