+sussezq The bandanna/fabric is to mute any extra vibrations coming from the strings at the top of the guitar where they are attached. It gives the strings a bit more of a "pop" and gives the sound of the strings more clarity. These bandanna's are mostly present in fingerstyle/percussive style guitar music.
I saw him a week ago and i asked him what the rag was for, he said that whenever he plays a note or a chord, he can hear the high pitched sounds from beyond the nut... thats how good his ear is

@@weaseltown I’ve always deeply disliked the concept of “mugicianship”. I’ve talked about it a lot with colleagues over the years and we’ve always felt it does such a disservice to musicians. People too often assume this has something to do with talent. If you practice hours a day for many many years you can absolutely achieve a high level of skill. Naturally, some people have physical predispositions that mean they are suited to playing well - just like how being tall means you are naturally better suited to play basketball than a shorter person. However there are plenty of tall people who won’t play basketball professionally because they don’t practice. Antoine should be celebrated for his very hard work and mature dedication to the instrument and his compositions. What his hands do is simply a byproduct of that. Myself and others often have felt treating musicians as some how separately gifted or magical does a disservice because it means you don’t adequately celebrate them for the qualities they really deserve. Namely, the dedication and hard work it takes to practice obsessively even when you are tired and often practicing repetitive or boring exercises or phrases. Nobody sees the unglamorous, boring, exhausting, endless practice they just see the end product. While the end product is important to celebrate I think it is more respectful to celebrate everything that went into creating that end product.
Haha! Just the opposite for me. When things are going great I watch this to remind myself that no matter how good things get, I still suck at guitar haha. Keeps me humble.
Good headphones are a must for listening to this, the fullness of sound and harmonic color is mesmerizing. Antoine Dufour's music has kept my jaw on the floor for a good number of yearsnow. It never gets old.

I hope Antoine Dufour today is in good health and still creating what he loves. How amazing the fungibility of beautiful music like his that can speak to us in our particular moments ("moments") regardless of ever-changing context. Music like his is a constant soundtrack that grounds us in the things we love while we experience the constancy of change. Forever grateful to Antoine for this masterpiece. A true prodigy & something of a musical genuis. The term starving/struggling artist really applied to me within the last few years. Between making ends meet financially chasing happiness & chasing my dreams I somehow lost ambition for my passion for music. But seeing Antoine play this live at the Canvas Festival after NAMM was a life changing moment. Sometimes you struggle & lose everything & everyone that matters for your passion. Sometimes one moment is all it takes to remind you what you live for.
Absolutely fucking amazing ! This is what musical talent combined with an immense amount of hard work might turn out. Remember people: You too can achieve greatness. Cultivate the art of whatever it is you're doing. Think outside the box, never give up and always look for inspiration wherever you can find it. Life sure is wonderful. It might at times seem like a fight, not worth fighting - and it might not at times be... Emil Hägglund I think you misunderstood my comment. My point is that this song is just as good, and deserves just as much recognition and views as Andy McKee's, "Drifting." This song is definitely more technical, but that doesn't mean it's any better or worse either, however, Antoine is not as popular as Andy, so to anyone who is new to Percussive Fingerstyle, Andy's name shows up first, and that's what they show all their friends. They do this before they ever even watch Mike Dawes, "The Impossible!" or even some of Lucas Jury, or the contestants of the #LowdenYoungGuitarist . There's a lot of talent out there, and "Drifting" will always be a classic, but this should be too, haha. ,Cheers Mate.

Antoine! I bought your album at the Candy Rat website in 2006 and lost it. Too my absolute astonishment I was able to redownload it in 2020. I totally forgot about this AMAZING piece of music an realized when I heard it that I knew it. You are with the greats with Don Ross, Andy McKee, and Michael Hedges!
Is the scarf on the headstock there to ward off some stray or unwanted resonances? I'm guessing with this style of play, the entire guitar is used to make musical sounds, so maybe the scarf mutes a sympathetic resonance in the neck...? Astoundingly good playing by Antoine, as usual...
You may also have noticed that he bends the strings up there for the echoing effect during that one juicy moment of calm in there. I noticed when playing the song myself that squeezing onto those strings (they are stiff) kind of hurts your fingers a little bit; maybe that could be another reason.
It's so that the strings between the head and neck of the guitar don't vibrate - which in an intimate recording can be heard making out of tune notes. Also it's makes your harmonics very crisp and loud. It's all for the sound of a perfect live recording.
I'm just wondering about what steps to start in a path to becoming this type of guitar player. I originally bought a guitar to play songs I liked but when I started hearing music like this I was hooked. If I can be at least 10% as good as he is that'd be awesome. How does a person even start to going down this path of guitar playing?
Hey Peterson, It's great to see that your interested in learning how to play guitar! If you want to play this style of percusive acoustic there are a few basics that will greatly improve your playing. My first recomandation is learning how to drop the tuning of your guitar into an altered tuning of some kind if you don't know how already. This can be easily done using a inbuilt tuner if your guitar has one or through a cheap external one. A good drop tuning to start with is DADGAD( This is the tuning Andy Mckee used in "Drifting"). After you get that done look at a quick turtorial on how to resonate natural harmonics (those bright shining noises) by slapping, tapping, plucking, or scraping them. The last step would be to get comfortable with hammer ons from nowhere and incorporating percussion. This is a technique where you just use your finger pressure to resonate the notes without having to pluck the string and percussion is simply hitting the guitar body in certain areas with your palm, fingers, etc.
Also one more thing I didn't start playing until I was 21 years old so there is always hope to get this good if your willing to learn and spend some time with the guitar. I have a few original compositions of my own if you want to look on my channel and if you have any questions feel free to message me.
I was in the same boat as you a couple of years ago when I first heard "Spiritual Groove" by Antoine Dufour, completely hooked from the first moment. Mostly I do my own compositions, so I don't know an abundance of fingerstyle songs, but that is the song that I first learned when I wanted to become a fingerstyle guitarist. If you like "Spiritual Groove", I would absolutely recommend it as a starting point for Antoine's style of playing. Minus the bridge it is fairly manageable should you spend some time on it. Antoine is selling tabs for most of his songs though should you need it. Either way, good luck and don't give up, like most things this will take time and practice.
Always a pleasure to see someone who is a master at his craft. The thing that amazes me about Antoine Dufour is that his compositions show a maturity beyond his years. The guy is only in his mid-30's, but his music sounds like it comes from someone much more seasoned in life. Plus, he seems like he's just a normal guy that you'd like to have as a friend. Big fan, hope to see him in concert some time.

I totally forgot about this AMAZING piece of music an realized when I heard it that I knew it. You are with the greats with Don Ross, Andy McKee, and Michael Hedges!

Is the scarf on the headstock there to ward off some stray or unwanted resonances? I'm guessing with this style of play, the entire guitar is used to make musical sounds, so maybe the scarf mutes a sympathetic resonance in the neck...?

You may also have noticed that he bends the strings up there for the echoing effect during that one juicy moment of calm in there. I noticed when playing the song myself that squeezing onto those strings (they are stiff) kind of hurts your fingers a little bit; maybe that could be another reason.
It's so that the strings between the head and neck of the guitar don't vibrate - which in an intimate recording can be heard making out of tune notes. Also it's makes your harmonics very crisp and loud. It's all for the sound of a perfect live recording.

I'm just wondering about what steps to start in a path to becoming this type of guitar player. I originally bought a guitar to play songs I liked but when I started hearing music like this I was hooked. If I can be at least 10% as good as he is that'd be awesome. How does a person even start to going down this path of guitar playing?
Hey Peterson, It's great to see that your interested in learning how to play guitar! If you want to play this style of percusive acoustic there are a few basics that will greatly improve your playing. My first recomandation is learning how to drop the tuning of your guitar into an altered tuning of some kind if you don't know how already. This can be easily done using a inbuilt tuner if your guitar has one or through a cheap external one. A good drop tuning to start with is DADGAD( This is the tuning Andy Mckee used in "Drifting"). After you get that done look at a quick turtorial on how to resonate natural harmonics (those bright shining noises) by slapping, tapping, plucking, or scraping them. The last step would be to get comfortable with hammer ons from nowhere and incorporating percussion. This is a technique where you just use your finger pressure to resonate the notes without having to pluck the string and percussion is simply hitting the guitar body in certain areas with your palm, fingers, etc.
Also one more thing I didn't start playing until I was 21 years old so there is always hope to get this good if your willing to learn and spend some time with the guitar. I was in the same boat as you a couple of years ago when I first heard "Spiritual Groove" by Antoine Dufour, completely hooked from the first moment. Mostly I do my own compositions, so I don't know an abundance of fingerstyle songs, but that is the song that I first learned when I wanted to become a fingerstyle guitarist. If you like "Spiritual Groove", I would absolutely recommend it as a starting point for Antoine's style of playing. Minus the bridge it is fairly manageable should you spend some time on it. Antoine is selling tabs for most of his songs though should you need it. Either way, good luck and don't give up, like most things this will take time and practice.

Always a pleasure to see someone who is a master at his craft. The thing that amazes me about Antoine Dufour is that his compositions show a maturity beyond his years. The guy is only in his mid-30's, but his music sounds like it comes from someone much more seasoned in life. Plus, he seems like he's just a normal guy that you'd like to have as a friend. Big fan, hope to see him in concert some time.

Believe it or not, that is there to cut down on harmonics from the strings above the nut. There is an audible difference on many guitars. :)
