Their headphones weren’t noise cancelling. They essentially had to concentrate on deliberately playing off time which is so difficult to do when you’ve played on time for so long
Not really. When you play for long enough, playing on time isn't something that you are forced to do. It helps with adaptability, but the stability is still there, so if you can get focused on being the exact same distance from the other one, it will be stable as long as no one messes up. Which seemed to be the biggest problem here

no, they are just listening to themselves in their headphones and playing to a click. you can even hear rob say in the video, "do we need to move you further away so you can't hear us?" to the guy on the end.
@@eyeseeyou913 that's exactly what the comment meant I think. They can hear each other, but not on purpose. So they have to be careful not to sync up. There must have been added pressure of everyone being there and time running out. In defense of middle-guy, he probably had it the hardest because he was hearing the song delayed in two directions relative to him, while the other guys only have to hear it delayed in one direction relative to them. Also, I feel like it would have been better to just play through to the end of the song whenever someone messed up. That way you don't under-practice the later parts. Not going to lie, final take gave me goosebumps and I may or may not have gone a little misty-eyed. Watching this again after 2 years and it's still one of my favorite guitar videos.
My god, that was beautiful. 60 takes can be super nerve-wracking even for guitar players who experienced all the pain in the world trying to play "that one song" over and over again. And having to play in a team makes it worse. Kudos to you guys, you overcame the trouble and did it. Also, matching outfits is hillarious touch lol
I keep coming back to this because it's honestly just one of the most beautiful things I've seen in a modern recording context. Rob's a guy who I'd love to have in the studio, just for the sake of his sheer determination to play it right and not leave until he does.
I love the guy at the backs reaction when he fucks up. It's just a whole lot of head and hand movements and very little noise compared to the other guys lol
I failed to properly read your comment before I replied.... I really should have paid more attention before assuming you were just being another pedantic TH-cam commenter.... ;-; Nice meme my dude ;)
I keep coming back to this video just because it's truly awesome to see musicians actually take fucking forever to capture a solid performance without any editing or tricks. It's the greatest thing to see everyone's tired and agitated faces at the beginning of the final take turn to relief as they nail it.
As an amateur musician and aspiring TH-camr I often get caught up in that perfectionist ideal and the illusion of "all in one take". Seeing the number of times you guy had to do different takes, take breaks, and just be frustrated really helped me remember that I'll never be perfect the first time around. I wanted to thank you for showing the process leading up to it, as well as the finished product. It really helped encourage me.
Good luck with music in the future my dude. As a fellow TH-camr, i have problems every week, and i see how hard it is to keep the cool, but stay strong, we'll get there someday!!!!
Its super interesting to see how youtube and stuff has an effect on people. Back in my day, the way to get things right was to do it until you got it right, but i guess with all these edits and clips it takes away from that natural realization.
Dunno how you got that idea in the first place.... A lot of albums take 12 months straight to get done, or in some cases much more than that. If people did things in one take, every album would be recorded over a couple of days.
@@vortexbeater8267 Even back in the day there was still a fair bit of editing going on. Quite a few classics have audible cuts or are well known to have been cut from many different takes. Although it's definitely gotten way more full on nowadays.
It's actually frightening seeing rob that agitated right before the camera guy suggests they take a break. Rob seems like such a nice guy and those are the dewds you never wanna see mad.
@@THCHead They're talking about 5:25, on take 24. You can see it building up throughout the previous takes though. Rob like quietly nods with this murderous expression on his face after they fuck up.

You're very welcome! i love how he puts so much details in his videos, so much commitment. He never fais to make me laugh, teach me something and make me headbump good :)
I find the technical aspects of this fascinating, the audio production side of my brain is loving it, and major respect for sticking at it for so many takes. Turned out great though, true analog delay 🤘
after spending most of the day today in the studio and finally finishing the recording of a metal piece after 108 takes, i feel like i probably should have practiced more before going to the studio lol
I feel your pain. Recording so many covers I sometimes end up getting stuck on one riff because of simple mistakes over and over again.... Does get easier though!
Well, technically it is delay, although it is not a delay pedal. But it is awesome how close the sound is to the actuall track with pedal, really a great accomplishment!
If you think THIS is cool, then check out the real thing: Robert Fripp and the League of Crafty Guitarists. I like this vid, too, but I gotta give credit where credit is due.
"Asturias" is a song performed by them that DEFINITELY comes to mind. Before I forget, there's also the "California Guitar Trio" which was started by three guys who were students of Fripp. It's all amazing stuff, I had the rare opportunity to go see the "Crafties" a few years ago and they haven't played since. It's truly one of a kind. Enjoy!!!
It happens. If you are a working musician your instruments will catch a few dings, so as long as it isn't broken it's fine. An acoustic guitar dropping on the wooden floor of that empty room must sound mightly loud though.
SteelSkin667 yeah I know. I've dropped a few of my own guitars too. Two or three of them have chipped headstocks because of that. I always panic whenever I drop one though, or whenever I hear one fall.
Imagine if distortion pedals weren't a thing. And people heard this for the 1st time. Unbelievably cool concept and amazing result man. Thank you for your content.
I've used a staircase with an unplugged Tele. I was right at the top and I swear it sounded 100% like an amp breaking up, I got as beautiful a bluesy edge of breakup sound as any amp could make. And some nice reverb too of course.
The commitment to recording it correctly and getting a perfect take is truly inspiring. Wish more of the bands I record showed even a fraction of that.
Adam Mercer No, what he's saying is true. Delay is a cheat in a lot of ways, not saying you shouldn't use it, but it's an easy escape, it can make simple things sound really good and impressive
This is how i started to listen to music. I think in my own head that i can listen to one instrument at a time in a concert, to then expand the view from one to all gives me the chills. This creates that understanding of coherence in between the different instrument, to then hear the whole. In this end, this makes song so much more enjoyable to hear, and enjoy. Which is due to this song, Thank you Rob! :)
not analog. it's just delay. analog and digital refer to representations of sound in another physical phenomenon, like voltages in an effects box. the delay here is actual soundwaves produced moments later by other musicians. and the reverb is actual soundwaves bouncing off walls of the room. the delay effect is produced without any transformation made to/from an analogous signal.
I don't normally think about the performance of the camera operator. But give it up for them being a champ for 60 takes just to finally capture the one that made it. Literally giving their all 60 times as if each time was *the* time. Bravo.
The same button starts the recording and the metronome for each musician. They'd have known pretty quick that something wasn't right. source: am a sound engineer.
To some degree, technology is the reason for a lack of collaboration, and connection. But then again, I never would have seen this video without TH-cam.

I don't know though, maybe that would have taken longer.
TheLazyKey well, once you are off beat it is hard to get back into it so they just restart
I think he was hearing only his guitar in the headphones, not the other 2. The mistakes happened simply because the song is hard to play...
Alessio David it's an acoustic guitar fam they we hearing everyone play, the headphones were there for a timed click to let the user know when to start playing.
In the video, they suggested classical guitar guy to move back further so he couldn't hear them so they were all hearing each other play.
He was hearing all the guitars, the song itself is relatively easy to play
8:18 I love how at that point everyone was feeling the same music in their own way althought playing the sam song

Urban Self Sufficiency no they each had different tempos in their headseats
exactly, it was the same for all of them

Thats because he is the last delay so the volume is low
I mean you can tell he's just being less vocal about it. He just likes gesticulating ; - ;
Ignacio Centurion, you are a legend.
was joking about the intensity because he is the last of the delay...
I failed to properly read your comment before I replied.... I really should have paid more attention before assuming you were just being another pedantic TH-cam commenter.... ;-; Nice meme my dude ;)
I’m gonna be honest, I am surprised it was only 60 takes, this would’ve taken me years, just goes to show how talented these three musicians are.
I thought the same.

This comment. Agree 10000%.

It's hard for me to realise that it's not delay. My brain just really wants it to be delay.

Enjoy!!!

That guitar drop felt painful
"Professional musicians."
I don’t understand how Rob just look back and didn’t say anything xd
That’s always painful.

"...makes you sound like you're a much better guitar player." Don't sell yourself short Rob. You're pretty damn good.
Adam Mercer No, what he's saying is true. Delay is a cheat in a lot of ways, not saying you shouldn't use it, but it's an easy escape, it can make simple things sound really good and impressive
I like this idea. It's interesting that effect done in this way because the "delays" aren't exact duplicates of the original sound. So cool!
The first take sounded really good!
It did, but look at 4:44, the third guy jumped to the change first, before Rob.
the first impression it is what stays. if any of others 59 takes was the first, would be the same.
I love how I can't even notice when they mess up
This is true analog delay
Mind = blown
Haha damn..
lose the digital click track and go for it
holly shit thats right
not analog. it's just delay. analog and digital refer to representations of sound in another physical phenomenon, like voltages in an effects box. the delay here is actual soundwaves produced moments later by other musicians. and the reverb is actual soundwaves bouncing off walls of the room. the delay effect is produced without any transformation made to/from an analogous signal.
Very impressive and makes you appreciate how much reduction in complexity a simple small pedal offers.
