  • Mizuno JPX923 Forged vs JPX921 Forged Review. Arguably Mizuno's flagship model in the JPX line of irons, well on sales performance anyway. So if you are looking to upgrade, or even coming from an earlier model or other manufacturer, this test is done with raw performance testing in mind and also testing miss strikes to see which of these two are more forgiving.

I have been watching more and more of your videos and I have to say that your level of detail and honesty is enjoyable to watch. Being a fellow Mizuno enthusiasts I realize that other manufacturers make great clubs as well and I appreciate that you represent that in your comparisons.

Jay, one of the things that is so impressive to me is the repeatability of your swing. Would you consider doing a lesson on your swing and the particulars of it (posture, setup, takeaway, etc)? The simplicity of it seems to lend itself to repeatability and would be a great one for people like me to work toward. Pretty please?

I totally regret the decision when I return the 921 forged for 921 hot metal. The 921 forged was a set of great clubs

I think so many golfers get lured in by the “easier to hit, more forgiving, game improvement irons” when at the end of the day, a bad strike is a bad strike. No amount of engineering is going to correct an overly thin or fat swing
Besides, irons across the board have gotten way more forgiving in general over the last couple of decades. Even the near-blades and shallow cavity backs have gained a ton of forgiveness

Great review, love these kind of comparisons which are very insightful. I would disagree with the conclusion of better performance/distance tho; the 923 forged tested had a one degree stronger loft than the 921 forged. The 923 forged just does a bit more loft jacking than the 921.

Yet the 923 had the same peak height and descent angle yet carried further, effectively free distance advantage over that of the 921. It's marginal yes and I wouldn't be persuading anyone to upgrade on a small gain, but anyone coming from older iron models and needing to be fitted, I'd happily take the gain 👍🏻

Nice info as usual. For the future it will be nice if you could make the head to head comparisons looking at 2 or 3 generations back as it will be more likely that golfers using those older equipments are currently looking for new irons.

Possibly have go be 919 as I think I have got the 900 but it's in a 6 iron.....

Jay, I hit more than 9 different irons when I chose my current set. The 921 forged was the second best feeling iron for me. I bought the WS D7 Forged and it felt the best and most consistent to me, but loved the 921...didn't like the 223 or 225...strangely enough.

Similar story, struggled with 223, 921f and 225 almost identical numbers, except got the 921f and a matching GW for less money than 225. Admittedly I didn't try WS D7, but did try Titleist t200, TM p790 and Callaway DCB. It was a long day 😅. Bought them July 22 so I'm happy to see that for my level, not waiting for 923f wasn't a mistake.

I just moved from my 919 Tour to 223 and I have to say that the feel , while both being Mizuno feel, the 223 remind me more of my old MP60/32 set for softness while the JPX had a nice firmness and feel , much like my MP25’s with the boron infused face. It was my enjoyment of the MP25’s that led me to the 223 as the set up with micro slot and strengthened face combined with traditional Mizuno softness in the scoring irons appealed to me. But I get both sides of the appeal, for me the final kicker was the KBS $ Taper shafts improved my accuracy even more than the KBS Tour and allowed me to hit a higher ball flight with no loss of distance. The 223’s just are butter, maybe not the prettiest clubs in the world but I appreciate the technology.

Actually, they are almost same in function, feeling, and forgiveness I compared between them

    So only cosmetic change/improvement?
I'm so glad that I pulled the trigger last year and got the 921F at slightly reduced price :)

Very slight addition to performance, extra 4 yards and some extra toe forgiveness, but it's not such a big playable gap as say the Hot Metals are 👍

Using the same shaft on the 921 and 923? Curious?

Surprisingly the 921 Forged has a narrower sole and shorter head length than the 923 Forged. The 923 Forged are slightly larger.
One sort of issue with my 921 Forged is how low the bounce is, especially on the 4-5 irons. I assume the 923 Forged has increased bounce from maybe 2* to 3 or 4* with the long irons.
I own the 921 Forged and am happy with them. I will say, I agree with what you said about the slotted Chromoly 4-7 irons feeling springier and faster on contact than the 1025E short irons. The Chromoly irons don’t feel much like true blades, but they do give some extra help in ball speed and distance. But I will say the 923 Forged looks way nicer. Such a beautiful design.
