You turned back at the right time brother. They were really trying to keep you and your camera away from something that likely would’ve become a quick problem. I used to be a cop and security pro and was immediately picking up cues at the top of the hill. Stay safe David.
Took a wrong turn walking in Bogota and got lost heading back to my hotel. I didn’t panic, brought up Waze on my iphone. Asked a young kid on a bike who verified I was heading in the right direction. I’m glad I know some spanish otherwise it would have been difficult communicating with him. Learn some basic Spanish guys when visiting Colombia. It’s a must.
Just a comment and not a criticism @tonyonsax . . . iPhones stand out in South America. I use an android when I am out on excursions and leave my iPhone for areas and situations where I don't have to think twice about pulling it out of my pocket.
@@jlennertz4018 I’m really discreet when using my iphone. I don’t pull it out around people or in a busy area and when I do pull it out, I make sure no one is close enough to snatch it from me. I wear a flat low profile shoulder bag under my jacket. You can’t even tell I am carrying anything. Surprisingly enough I noticed in Bogota that a lot of Colombians don’t really hide their phones when talking on them. I did not expect to see that based on all the stories I’ve heard.
@@jlennertz4018 Btw, I never carry my iphone in my pocket!
You're brave taking your phone out and asking for advice with it☠️ Lucky you didn't get robbed immediately
@@dlc2479 I didn’t ask for advice with my phone out. I said I checked Waze to find out where I was and then asked a kid on a bike if was heading in the right direction and he confirmed I was heading in the right direction after I put my phone away. I’m pretty astute when it comes to my safety. I know very well how to blend in and not draw attention to myself and my Spanish is good.
This guy is more Colombian than me, that whistle is the most obvious signal of danger, you did ok retracing your steps.
why is it danger?
@throwawaybruh7518it can also mean cops, 1 is trouble 2 is all is normal 😅
@warlord1207 Because he’s letting his homies know there’s a mark in the hood. That’s the sound of you about to be catching a critical beat down while getting your pockets flipped, and it’s a funny question coming from someone repping the warlord handle, so are you’re trolling us here?😆
@@stricknice5260 bruh i'm built for the battlefield not the hood
@@selvamani1973-p7b By battlefield you mean sitting on the couch with a controller and Doritos in your hand right?
Whenever I go to Medellin, I never bring up his name, as it's a very sensitive topic for many.
David & other ex-pats have said the same thing many times before.
Seems tacky to do it. I wouldn’t bring it up either. Seems like a signal of ignorance even saying his name
@Timnguyen819you seem like someone who gets a mental breakdown if someone gives you a pink lighter.
I never mention him to my Colombian wife. too many bad memories for Colombians who were adults then. taboo!
This only proves one more time that camaraman never dies.
Eres hermosa!
A man who murders 3,000 people including cops, judges and children - does not have any goodness in his heart. He helped the neighborhoods to buy public support and guarantee his Saftey in his hiding places. Plain and simple.
Yeah but, they still got their homes didn’t they? You won’t EVER be able to see them from their perspectivE, that’s fine…
David, as you talked to the guys at the stairs the other guy walked into the area where they told you not to go and it looked like he was lifting his cellular to his head. Super good that you got out of there . . . the whistle and then the guy with the cell . . . that was going sideways super fast. Be careful my friend. Respeito do Brasil para o que vc fazer.
5:37 for anyone curious :)
I’m from Medellin and there’s no way I’m going to be walking around that neighborhood. It’s full of low life people and it’s very dangerous. 5:40 did you hear that whistle? It seems like ignorance is bless in this case because David didn’t panic.
That's the reason he didn't end up going up there. He's obviously not clueless.
@@nathancasey7712He's got good street sense. Those people around that area weren't particularly friendly.
That's a clue, plus going away from the main path, puts you at even greater risk.
Seems a relatively safe area to me, at least the blocks around the touristic spot. Thieves smell fear like we say.
Estos solo muestran lo feo . Y los extramgrros estan llegado a Medellin solo por drogas y por menores de edad . Cuando mires un extramgrros sin esposa y familia Colombiana es por algo .
Me neither - if i dont need to be in a place, i dont go there.
Leave the crazy stuff to Kurt Caz. You don’t need to make the headlines in a bad way. Yea I would say that you were about 50 steps from a beat down and getting robbed when that guy whistled.
Eh it wasn't so bad and honestly he did the right thing. If anything we need more examples of people treating areas like these with respect and not just douchily walking into bad areas like they are untouchable.
The streets look well maintained and clean.
Right leave tha Basra to Kurt Kaz lol
Kurt Caz has been mugged before in Latin America, he just wasn’t recording at the time. Kurt is very street smart though from growing up in South Africa.
@@mizp I live in Colombia. Re read my post. That’s exactly what I ment. Stay outta these places or at least keep your head on a swivel. Which he did when his spider senses went off. As far me and mine. If I don’t have any business there I don’t go there. Same rule applies in Denver.
I like these self aware videos on the Whistling call out to others.
many people do not like being filmed and their home neighborhoods treated as objects of curiosity.
just taking out your phone and filming is an amazingly disrespectful thing to do, for many.
The young lady asking you about a particular place...her "investigating..." response was ⛳
You got some colorful video up there but I started feeling the same vibe you did when going up those stairs. Thanks for sharing Dave, you have a great channel!
I knew you were in a sketchy situation when at the very start of the video the girl quickly covered her face with her hair.
I caught that too. I also caught how she took a long hard look at his face as if to make sure to be able to easily recognize him later or remember him This guys going to get himself kidnapped if he keeps this up
She was looking real fine too
Who didn't notice her ❤❤
@@Ayban3that's a trans!!! LOL
your example is informative to see how someone might get robbed thanks david
Good luck on the mayor getting rid of that neighborhood. Pablo built more houses and schools for the people there than the government did. Regardless of his motivation those people's grand parents that got houses from and their families still love the guy. History is sometimes based on perspective. The people there have a completely different perspective from other parts or town. Good call on the bailing out after the whistle. Stay safe.
The guy at 537 saw you recording and whistles and the guys ahead by the cab move to the side..they were probably more scared of you recording than anything else..but at the end of the day in this neighborhood you don’t get a second chance to be wrong
ye!! never have your phone out videoing especially when walking around a barrio up in the hills!! they think you are undercover police!!
Man, Colombia is going downhill fast. The huge influx of Passport Bros has created a new cash cow for the gangs. I have spent about a year in Colombia in total and would not go there right now even if you paid me a large sum of money.
Yep, same. I actually canceled my next trip. I knew those idiots were going to F it all up with all that social media.
But , why
I didnt see one foreigner other than David and he was scared to get got himself. I don't see your logic
@@Ambience88Where do you think the ppl who are drugging and robbing in poblado live?
Blaming passport bros, there are not as many as you think
I love how you’re exploring these lesser known parts of Medellin in a fresh manner. I was in Communa 13 for the first time earlier today and took 1 of the metrocables to Juan XIII. Absolutely amazing. I will definitely return there!
Go see Parque Arvi as well. Beautiful area.
no tourist in their right mind would go up there anyway....no need to warn us
😂
Fr 😂 I'm from Medellín but never go there 😂
If anything don't get fooled by some people, I was born in Medellin, I'm 40 now and still living here, Pablo Escobar was a bloodthirsty narco terrorist, and he left Colombia with a huge problem, the guerrillas of FARC, ELN and M19
I know that barrio whistle! Always trust your spider senses in Meddy. Great vid.
I got a bad vibe the moment I saw the guy working on the bike and then the other guy on the bike was hesitant when you asked that question. Then, the whistle. He was signaling his buddies around the corner that you were coming. I’m glad you got out of there.
that dude whistled like it was pay day!
Better to be safe David. Let Volpe or Kurt go into the danger zone 😂
Kurt mostly doesn't go to dangerous areas. The exceptions were Siloue in Cali, where he didn't even enter the area. Or a Brazilian Favela where he went with a guide.
Most people have no understanding of the the fact that even the Touristic areas have risks, as these areas attract the Criminals.
@@spirittravels. to say Kurt doesn’t go to dangerous areas is just nonsense, not all of his videos are dangerous but he definitely goes to a lot of sketchy places
I'm sure you noticed the small apartments on the way up those stairs were very ominous looking. The area was a bit darker and concealed. It's said that Escobar once had more $100 dollar 💵 bills in his possession than all of the United States. There are many properties of his on nearby islands that have been abandoned - HUGE MANSIONS!! It was the US gov't who provided Colombia with the surveillance and tracking technology to locate Escobar. 30 years ago the tracking technology was far less sophisticated. Radio signals were used to track his phone. The USA provided what Colombia needed... but the Colombians had to "take him out." They weren't there to capture him... they were there to execute him. Was he helping the poor people of Medellin or helping himself??! BOTH!!
I worked with a Colombian dude that thought Pablo was a hero. He grew up through all that. He also had the sound of an ak-47 for a phone ring tone. Fun guy to work with No-fucks given what so ever. Meet some really interesting people working in the oil patch.
I don’t think it matters if it’s from the goodness of his heart or not. People respect actions, not intentions.
That whistle had the hairs on the bacc of my neck stand up‼️
Me too

Before the whistle, I saw two doors being closed at your left from residents as if they knew something was about to happen… You made the right decision not going up the stairs with that guy!
A great life lesson, "trust your gut"!

That seemed like a smart move to go back down at 8:50
I’ve been there and I was told not to go beyond the wall area

in 2021 I went to Medellin with my Puerto Rican friends. I am a total gringo so having my Spanish speaking friends along was needed. I wanted to go to BPE, so we did. We parked by the tour bus parking at the entrance on the main street into the barrio. We walked in and were met by very nice, and honest people. One of the locals who live in BPE his entire life, gave us a tour around the place. And we ended up drinking at one of the street side bars for the next 8 hours. We bought beers for our local tour guide, and other locals who wondered why a white gringo in his 50's was in the hood. I didnt feel unsafe at all. I was aware of my surroundings and didnt let my guard down, just in case (just like in Medellin proper and Lleras and Poblado). We left BPE at midnite, a little drunk and the locals we hung out with, walked us to our car at the end to make sure we were safe. True PE was a ruthless killer narco terrorist, and he built the barrio for the people whom he later used to hide him out and keep safe from law enforcement. In Colombia, you dont bring up PE, most of the people hate him, but like David said, the BPE people mostly like him and are grateful for their free houses. The houses by the way that were given to people, were handed down thru the families, and now there are very few OG people in BPE, and their kids and their kids kids are in the houses. They pass down free of charge, and they just pay power etc. Every country has their ugly past. We in the USA also, with some uglyness going on presently. Thats life.
♥️♥️🙏🏼
@6:35 great call!! always trust your gut instinct/intuition/vibe... no amount of content creation for us living vicariously through you on TH-cam is worth your life... you have loved ones... we appreciate all that you do as it is

It seemed like the people didn't want to get filmed. I have been wondering for a while now about the consequences of Passport Creeps exploiting the population in their videos. Wondering if they caught up to it
Exactly and then they're shocked that they're dropping like flies now☠️
@dlc2479 It's the black entitlement they are used to be getting in the states. They think they have the same above the law privileges outside of the country LMAO these clowns 🤡

David, HORRIBLE decision going up passed Pablo's touristic block. GREAT decision not keep going up after you felt the bad vibes after hearing the whistle. Even a Colombian like myself, won't ever go to a barrio like Pablo's alone and a camera on my hand. You are lucky you are alive brother! Medellin is nothing to play with, once they acknowledge you are American, you are marked! Stay safe!!!
History should be preserved- Pablo built that neighborhood and helped people out- whether or not it was for the right reasons- we don't know - he will always have a bond with the people he helped.
I think we have some kind of sixth sense. I've been in situations before where a 'feeling' has stopped me doing something, that would have ended very badly. It's hard to explain
You're right, that MFKR was a criminal. No glory to him or pity from me!
Great video David. Fascinating place and history.
David, you made the right decision coming back down. Trust me, i know ,the part where there's pablo pictures you're go ,but even higher than where you went is a no good, my friend aunt leaves around there's, and i went with her at night there's so many people in the streets and was dying to pull my camera out and she told me don't you there ,that probably would have been my best video in my channel lol
Last time I was in Medellín, 2019 just before the covid outbreak I met Pablos brother Roberto, actually set down and talked to him for about 10 minutes, was a very friendly old man and humble.
OOooooh man that was intense, good you trusted your gut and went back.
If ever there was an example to trust your gut feelings, it was this.
Great videos and im going to subscribe as ive watched a few now.
5:40 as soon as you started asking them where to go, I was like that's not too smart. If I were there to do you wrong, I'd be like "yea, just go on up that way. Let me show you." And lead you to a boxed in dark place. I'm glad you figured it out before anything happened. You made yourself a mark. You should have just walked on where you wanted to go like a boss.
Does it matter with what kind of motive he did the houses?.. what matters is that he gave homes to poor people, we have plenty of corrupt people in congress and they have done nothing for the marginalized people of Colombia.
Pablo gave to the have-nots of Colombia. The 'have's" work hard to keep chaos, inequality, and insecurity on the forefront. His actions, like all benevolent rebels, threatens the power structure, the status quo
I would never visit that neighborhood alone as a foreign toursit.

Indeed...
She wasn't a working chica, because he was in a residential neighborhood, not centro, poblado and definitely not a "pink zone". That's how some girls dress up. I'm surprised you get impressed quite easily, no wonder why some foreigners end up dead with the real working girls. 😐

I walked up in and around the neighborhoods in Comuna 13. It felt pretty safe there during the day though it didn’t feel entirely safe either… I would not do it at night.. I got some cool photos from there.. it looks a lot like some of the neighborhood that you were in here with lots of stairs. It was an interesting experience.
Hey David , you were observed both directions up and down. The kids popping out on your way up and down, then the women grabbing their phones,,, the ones you were told are ok to speak to hey hahah There were shouts calls & whistles plus bird calls all marking your movements in both directions. The girl you asked is it safe up there, did you notice her give the NOD up the lane to somebody direct after she said your investigating? The girl with her when asked if she was from that area went to say no? The chaps at the bikes - that whistle, see the chap in white further along leaning on the yellow car/cab? He instant reacts to that whistle. Watch it on a wide screen - you will see what i mean?? Best of luck on the travels bro - take care.. peace
They prolly thought he was a cop
Good eye!
Yeah I noticed that too, how the guy in white further down reacted to the whistle. They were probably selling and he gave him the heads up to split.
