Hey guys. This advice mostly applies to people coming down here for the dating scene. Most occurrences happen when meeting people on dating apps. But I have heard of these criminals approaching people in bars and other scenarios, using the honey pot method. Medellin Colombia is a wonderful city, just have to be safe and know what to look out for. Take care everyone 🙏🏼
This makes me feel a lot better. Have been seeing a lot of videos etc on how dangerous it’s gotten. I’m not moving there for dating, especially not like the stereotypical gringo, so think I’ll be fine
I think you are still a big target even if you are there for business trip. Organized criminals are looking for all foreigners, not just the tourists that are looking for cheap sex. Of course, your risk is reduced if you don't go out at night and hanging out at the bar. Kidnappers don't care why you are there.
This reminds me of the golden age of TH-cam. No stupid background music, no stupid tiktok-style edits with cuts every 2 seconds, just quality informative content.
Yeah just rambling and repeating the same things, or not doing a Google search to figure out the details about what he is warning about, and constantly saying he doesn't know. The perfect person to get information on to protect yourself...
I absolutely love Colombia and I've spent a significant amount of time in Medellin, but my plans for moving there have changed. I'm not interested in living in a place I need to look over my shoulder every 5 seconds or worry about everyone I meet. WIll always visit my friends, but I'm no longer interested in retiring there. Its just not worth it.
Me too I just got back good expression from Medellin, but these horrible news sucks if ever want to go back.any body who has interest on Colombia tourism has to find political solution through lobbying us ,Colombia governments not only release number of death there.
As someone who travels and has lived in Tijuana for many years (I am building a house in puerto nuevo). I have been in some of the worse areas in what is considered a very dangerous city. I have been to Medellin 7 times, I have never had a problem with cops or generally the people. I usually rent a car do my own driving, but what has happened in Tijuanas Zona Norte has happened in Medellin, flashly gringos trying to be captain save a ho's has corrupted the place and now the criminals have caught on. I will say one thing, Colombians are friendly warm loving people but compared to lets say a Buchona from Sinaloa, the bad paisas are far more cold blooded and willing to go farther than any Mexican girl I have ever met. Men you have to be very very careful with women down there, be wary of the ones from Robledo they work in groups.
I’m a Latino dude from Miami , I have traveled extensively around the world ( over 80 countries) When jn Colombia I see lots of foreigners who think they are in paradise They want easy girls and sex but they have forgotten about what Colombia is about Medellin was for years one of the most corrupt and dangerous cities in the world Generations were brought up in a climate of poverty and violence for some , stealing from foreigners is ok But gangs are still part of their culture If u hi there and I expose yourself to people like that , then u are the problem You become a target because u are a foreign traveler and they know it Especially if u are white or African american Even though many Latinos passing as Colombians , are also mugged If I go there , I don’t bring any valuables Just a cheap Amazon watch , no expensive clothes and always a small Pouch to keep some Money , I use a dummy wallet as well If I get a cab I don’t tell the driver gen exact address , just nearby And that I’mNot traveling alone , I’m visiting with a group of colleagues or friends Safety first !!
There are many white latinos out there. Latino is only a cultural tag and its people come in any race under the sun or mix of, including most certainly white. It beggars belief that a latino precisely would have been brainwashed into thinking there are not. Also, all black people from Latin America are African Americans too. Stop appropiating the term 'American' to mean exclusively from USA. Anyone or anything related to any region of the Americas is American too.
A safe country is a country where you can be a bit naive with precautions and get away with it, a dangerous country is one where you cannot be naive with precautions. In Seoul where I’m from, people walk around the streets with their phones out and walk alone at night all the time, because nothing happens.
Guess i was the lucky one 🤣🤣🤣 not all girls are bad there...i met a girl online,i traveled to Medellin, she waited for me at the airport late at night, with her father, they took me to their home, met the whole family and 4 years later we are happy and have two kids 🙂
A friend of mine - Tou Ger Xiong was lured by a girl who he met on a dating app. Then he was kidnapped, ransomed and murdered just 2 weeks ago. I wish he was more careful when he went over there. Just youtube his name and you'll see the story. Thanks for raising awareness
I am very sorry for your loss and that story has really impacted me. I feel that Medellin blew up in popularity among Asian and brown men because dating in the west has been very challenging for these groups. I think men risking their lives just to have company of women is a symptom of the greater problems related to the loneliness and isolation faced by many men in the west.
The tres cruces murder didn't happen at Tres Cruces. This guy was kidnapped the day before and dumped at Tres Cruces. A couple weeks after his murder another foreigner was kidnapped. But, the kidnappers crashed their car with the foreigner inside. Several kidnappers were arrested and a license plate tied to the Tres Cruces murder was also found in the car. His error was not calling the Uber himself, but getting into a car she arranged. She brought her dog on the date and were gonna go drop the dog off to continue the date. 14 people were arrested in September for orchestrating a kidnapping network that operated for 2 years and was linked to the Tres Cruces murder of Kyle Alexander Mackenzie.
Being arrested in Colombia means nothing. They soon will be free. Indeed, those who really rules the city (huge gangs that control the territory) are targeting foreigners. Medellín is not the kind of city for a guy who comes from the first world, all the natives, including myself, have internalized the kind of behavior for being safe. Foreingers, specially gringos, are a gold mine for those gangs.
For those interested. Semana has a detailed news article titled "Hijos de papi y mami lideraban tenebrosa banda de paseo millonario en Medellín; extranjeros sus principales víctimas, hay un muerto."
Same reasons I still haven't been there or Brazil. If I'm not going with a local to show me around and keep me on a safe track, I'm not going. Too many ways to be robbed or worse
I'm Colombian living in Minnesota, my coworkers are his family. He met a woman online, went to Venezuela with her and took her to places, events, shopping, a concert and his family told me they received messages asking for $2000.
I’m a Colombian woman married to a well off Caucasian American “gringo”. My love for him is so much that I try to keep him as far as I can from Colombia. Yes, there are some fun things to do there, but it feels like playing Russian roulette every time you go out. As a Colombian myself, who grew up in the most dangerous place in the country in the 80s and 90s (Zona de Uraba), I can smell danger situations easily. I just came from Bogotá, after spending a month there and honestly, I couldn’t wait to leave. Only after passing the emigration point, I felt at ease . It is sad to say it, but I’ll never recommend anyone to go to Colombia. The chances of getting violently robe, stabbed, taken advantage of, or murdered are too high. All it takes is one little mistake to be ⚰️
@@amandaburleson2035 Oh dear, are you projecting your insecurities onto me? As a matter of fact, I'm encouraging him to go to Thailand for fun, but he doesn't want to go. Yep! I'm that type of wife😂
Big D you always tell it like it is, unlike the weasels selling "Move to Medellin" courses while downplaying the safety concerns. This is why you got called to Mexico to film documentaries, because you possess integrity. Keep it up.
What’s the name of the documentary I’d love to keep an eye out for it, as for your comment you hit it on the head brother happy holidays to you and yours!
It's simple. The big red flag is to NOT use dating apps to score. Also, and this needs to be said, many of these types of crimes are being perpetuated by Venezuelan gangs. They're extremely violent even compared to the typical Colombian criminal. Most foreigners won't be able to tell the difference. Peru, Ecuador and Chile can attest to this statement. Stay safe brother.
Seems like venezuelan immigrants are easy to scapegoat on this issue. What proof is there that it is venezuelans perpetrating these crimes, and not colombianos?
I heared that Ecuador only all kidnap tourists first.panama ,Costa rica ,Mexico safer because economy is better.but no place has climate, girls, food of Medellin.
I’m Mexican and I’ve just returned from Colombia, all I can say is, I’ve found Medellin more dangerous than Mexico City, I had to watch my back all the time. Everybody told me not to go to downtown. I didn’t have that feeling in Bogota. But I have to say, I’ve spend a glorious week in Guatape, where I felt super safe and met the local people and their families. I will return to walk to the Last city.
I've been to Medellin many times but haven't been in a couple years. I'm actually one my way there right now. Can u give me some specific examples of the danger u saw or felt? Thanks
I'm a gringo, with Mexico residency, and living in Guadalajara. I've traveled to Colombia 5 times to different regions and Medellín felt the most dangerous. Overall I feel much safer in México than in Colombia, especially when it comes to street crime.
I’ve been to 30 countries and dated girls in just about of them. Medellin was hands down the worst. Every girl wanted money, even the mediocre ones. None of them had a good vibe. I’m not sure how or why people would go there for women when there are many other places that offer much more
I am not sure either. I found much better-quality women in Barranquilla, Bogota and Bucaramanga. The worst quality women were by far in the main tourist hubs of Cartagena and Medellin.
This Just Happened To me. On 12/30/23 I arrived to BOGOTA COLOMBIA I went out to the bar and had a drink and I meet some people there and I know They put something in my drink. I woke up in the hospital. And they took everything I had. iPhone wallet and they hacked into my whole entire accounts. I’m thankful that I’m alive but I can say to be careful. And thank you for spreading this information!
Same to me in Bogota last year I was drugged robbed and found 3 days later spent 11 days in ICU but I still love ❤️ Bogota and will return but alot more cautious
Maybe we should just not drink or dang near eat at all while there lol Maybe drink stuff out of a vendor machine or beer with a cap and hold it with you at all times ???? Idk
I’ve been visiting Medellin for the past 3 years. I practically live there part time. All of the victims are males and involve women from dating apps or a prostitute from Lleras. If you get rid of the ingredients that involve dating apps, street walkers and heavy drinking with these kinds of people, you will be fine visiting in Medellin. The criminals will always evolve because society will always be 1 step behind. 70 percent of visitors to Medellin are new visitors and quite possibly new inexperienced travelers. Approximately 55% percent are male and 45 % are women. So why is it that the males are the ones becoming victims? It’s because most will be going to Medellin for the wrong reason. For those that are looking for a hook up, sorry to spill the beans but there is no hook up culture in Colombia. However, there are places that you can go to have a safe legal adult entertainment. Stay off the apps! Avoid the fufas and deprive these criminals from taking advantage of the opportunity you may display to them.
@@Dividenddream yea but white knights gonna pretend that Colombia is perfectly safe 😂 I was in a secure park and some random guy wanted to rob us. luckily i wasn't alone and it was afternoon with a lot people around that's safe us from robbery
Had my first bad experience in Colombia on my third time. I was locked up in the back of nightclub for 6 hours. Tried to charge me 1300 US for drinks. Had to fight 6 guys but I found out I was locked in room from outside. They tried to run up my credit card but it was marked for fraud. They took my phone and wallet as collateral. But l just left it there and went home. Luckily I had my passport at hotel. I lost my phone and $250 US but it could have been worse. I could have lost 1500 or my life.
It wasn't even a strip club. It was a bar with girls with white uniforms called Baru Bar in Llares. Literally went there for one beer and grab something small to each and got tricked into buying girls drinks and they came back to me with a bill 0f 1500 US. I stupidly dropped my guard but this was a brick and morter bar and it was still daylight when I went in. Went to cops and most of them were in cohoots with the owner. Its beyond crazy. @@JohnSmith-dm1wo
@@JohnSmith-dm1wo It was beyond my normal precautions I had planned for. Went to LLares for literally one and day and that happened. Had a much better time in Sabaneta as boring as it was during the day.
Other than security, taxes are very high and worrying. If you stay in Colombia for more than 6 months, you have to file your tax. It means that a group of people in DIAN have information about your worldwide assets, and this information can leak into the wrong hands.
Unfortunately I think you're right David when you say the problem is just going to get worse. Medellin is becoming overrun by tourists (many sex tourists from the United States sadly as well) and they just don't understand the culture or the dangers involved. I am glad that I am no longer doing the whole dating/Tinder thing in Colombia, and fortunate that I actually met someone I see being part of my life for many years to come. Knowing what I know now about Colombia I would not have used Tinder in such a caviler fashion as I did two years ago, especially in cities like Bogota, Cartagena, and Medellin!
@kurrwa The coast in my opinion is the worst representation of Colombia. People are rude and they try to rip you off every chance they get. No desire to ever return to either Santa Marta or Barranquilla.
Don't see the news? Keep up to date, please. I am local and every week a US Citizen or European citizen is killed here. My advice is: If you love your both kidneys and appreciate your life don't meet with strangers here. Meet only with well known people. This is one of the most dangerous cities in the whole world. If you are not careful, It will be dine and die!
The best part of Colombia isn't in big cities like Bogota, Medellin , Cali, and even Cartagena. Visit the small towns like Salento & Filandia, I felt really safe there, the nature is stunning and people are so kind.
Spent November in Medellín and made the decision to move there next spring/summer. Brakes are on now. The scariest thing is not just the single event, but El Colombiano says it's the 3rd death of a tourist IN DECEMBER! And that kidnapping of foreigners in Antioquia IS ON THE RISE by a double digit percent. BTW, Tou Ger was found about a mile from where you are walking. For me, I thought I was safe and careful the whole time, but now I understand people who think they are safe are fooling themselves.
you dont even want to know how many people are getting robbed here at gunpoint. i was robbed about 2 blocks from there the guy in the video is. it was 2:00 PM on a thusday! sold my apartment in medellin, you cant relax in this city, wont miss it! all you single men enjoy the cheap transactional pussy!
Just because you're a tourist does not magically give you protections... Remember you're in a foreign country, you don't go walking around bad parts of NYC or Philly at night do you? Because you will get robbed or killed the same way, stay in the safe parts of town
...the reality is, you talk about where people have traveled to as tourist destinations. Well, people also thought that Colombia was a tourist destination. So things happen in other tourist destinations as well, pick pocketing etc. But kidnapping!! Any place where you can be kidnapped...targeted for money as a foreigner and kidnapped is not a tourist destination. So if you are going to Colombia it should not be for tourism. I'm from New York. I've been through all the hoods and I've seen some crazy shit. But ain't no tourist or outta towners getting kidnapped. There's no way around that and honestly I feel like good luck if you going there for tourism. You might as well go to North Korea.
Im from NYC too and just thinking here in NyC is not all roses and sunshine but you can walk down the streets or riding on the subway with a cellphone out and 98-99% you won’t get robbed (not saying it never happens but the chances are lower). In Colombia or most of Latin America once you outside the streets you need to keep on guard every second like the rest of the locals.
I was drugged in Bogota back in 2021, but even after that happened, I spent 6 more months in Colombia and was perfectly safe and had a great time. But with this new wave of crimes, I have become completely deterred from returning to Colombia. I am now considering Chile or Ecuador and I hope other men consider the same.
@@nealmccoy6176 Nope. Quito is very dangerous too. Costa Rica probably the safest of all latin countries. Far more gringo tourists there, and lots of cool places to go and see. IMO, head far to New Zealand or further to Australia. Fiji as well.
The bottom line is if you want the hot or feminine women the PP bros talk about, you're going to have to accept some kind of compromise in terms of safety, lacking infrastructure etc..I lived in Bogota and Santiago, Chile and found the experience to be just fine as long as you avoided the bad neighborhoods and didn't think exclusively with your small head. I am sure much of this applies to Ecuador as well.
Colombia is extremely dangerous right now. I am an American that also moved to Medellin 5 years ago, and I am seeing an alarming rise in crime in the city.
@@ComplexWork it’s not Gaza dangerous but at this time Colombia has one of the highest theft and murder rates in the entire world. So yes it’s extremely dangerous. I live here and I hear all the stories of what’s happening around me. Believe me, it’s dangerous.
As a gringo whos been to Medellín twice and mexico dozens of times, i personally think mexico is safer. I have no problem looking flashy or walking alone in mexico, but in Medellín i did not have the same level of comfort. I was always on edge in Medellín. It gets exhausting, having to constantly be on guard.
I went to Cali Colombia this passed summer to visit my wife’s family and just like any parent my head was on swivel 24/7 especially the area not having any tourists at all (I was aware prior.). There is 100% truth to any area can be dangerous in the states, overseas, etc but being in completely different country than you’re used to instantly puts you at a disadvantage regardless of how well you can try to blend in. We hiked Las Tres Cruces in Cali and it was great experience I can only imagine being there with less traffic or veering off to a more secluded part especially at night. Even here in Long Island NY it’s perceived to be far safer than the 5 Burroughs and there’s plenty of shootings, violent crimes, and many reports of people with vans in shopping center parking lots approaching parents with kids (especially with women) asking weird questions with bad intentions. So much evil in this world as much as we don’t like to hear it as it gets exhausting we do need to be reminded thanks for the video.
Well I hope long island would be a safe place and not be on a dangerous level like Colombia.......born and raised long islander so I would be shocked if it was a unsafe place to be.
I am in Colombia now, in Santa Marta, where i find it to be a little less sketchy than in Medellin. It’s more laid back here and I have come to enjoy it here quite a lot. I loved Medellin, as it is one of the first prominent cities in South America that i have spent any time aside from Cuzco, Peru. Laureles, Belen and Envigado are my favorite spots in Medellin, but you have to be very careful in Laureles and Poblado and anywhere in Colombia or South America, in general, in my opinion. It’s a different world down here. But even the US is not exceptionally safe in many places, especially now. I too have been considering moving here. I have not had any problems in the 8 months that i have been in the country, but i would say the best way to stay out of trouble is to consider your state of mind and your intentions. When you go out, have a definite plan, have a purpose and a direction. Know where you are going. Have a point A and a point B and see it through.. in my experience darkness has a way of inviting itself into your personal space when you are unaware of your own intentions and your purpose. And so your awareness is your best ally. There are many people who will talk to you and they are very friendly and there are others who will try to engage with you and are seeking to take something from you in one way or another. You have to be self aware enough to know the difference. In my time here, I have met far more beautiful and wonderful Colombians than the opposite, but every time i go out on the street I keep a very clear motive and intention for where I am going and what I am doing. As a single man, there is certainly a very honest risk in meeting women on dating apps or out at clubs.. I personally do not drink much or spend time at bars or parties, because i know that increases the risks of being taken advantage of by a significant amount. If you are out at night, do not take the risk of walking distances, take a taxi or Uber to your destination. And to the single men, do not let your guard down with women until you have been able to assess the purity and beauty of her heart, her intention and perhaps know something about the way she lives her life. Too many of the women here are only interested in your money and how you can help them financially. Nuff said. Be careful y’all.
I loved Medellin. People. Food. Climate. However, I do not have dark complexion and dark eyes like David. I was followed, harassed, followed into small stores, warned not to walk alone on empty streets (daytime). I agree, watching my back, head on a swivel, situational awareness, exhausting and tiring.
@@todayisagoodday5027 to live or to visit? To visit, it’s fine. To live? if you stay in the main gringo tourist zones (Centro and Getsemani) and avoid drugs and working ladies, you will be fine. The problem is crime is increasing on the edge. Robberies in Pie De La Popa. Gringos killed up in Marbella. Robberies at sit down restaurants in Bocagrande / Laguito. It’s definitely safer than Medellin, but I’d weigh that against the cost against other areas.
@@southpawrighthook6205 Thank you. It would be to visit and don't do drugs or drink much. The ladies are the problem lol. I'll have to pass for now I guess.
Wow im visiting soon and glad I came across this video because I am using dating apps, there are red flags… I’ll be sure change how I go about things from here
The more I think about it, they probably only asked for $2,000 because they figured the family would be willing to pay it without hesitation and without getting the police involved. They figured "let's not get greedy. let's keep a low profile", smh. Now, why they continued to torture the guy and eventually killed him after getting the money is perplexing and terrifying.
By the grace of God I spent 6 weeks in Colombia using tinder and didn’t have a bad experience. However, I’m an experienced traveler (street smart) and always verified these women on their social media, met them in a public setting, etc. But even with that, I easily could’ve fallen victim to an elaborate scheme. I will never return to Colombia and I hope everyone stays safe down there.
@@LifewithDavidDavid, I know you will disagree with me but I tell it as it is. Colombia and Brazil romances and socialization destinations are death traps for foreigners. Best to keep out. Horrible place to be.
I love Colombia, been a few times for work - only Bogota however. Generally I’ve been fine by taking reasonable precautions and being aware of my surroundings. I speak a little conversational Spanish which helps. It’s a beautiful country with a rich culture, that has pros and cons like any other nation on earth.
@lifewithdavid this exact same story happened to my friend and I in Cali, Colombia. This girl he was seeing for a month set us up and used our credit cards at gunpoint for over 24 hours. Luckily we were released unharmed
Recently seen a girl pick up a guy on a tiktok video. And man, the danger is you couldn't even see the danger. She was sweet good looking, and there isn't a guy who could resist that attention. But glad you putting it out there.
I once thought of visiting Medellin but I started having doubts where the protests broke out. Then after the murders that have occurring towards foreigners, it is completely off my list. Not even if I traveled with a remote work community and I have been traveling solo and with communities since 2002 (LATAM, Asia, and Europe). Be safe out there.
David, the thing about it is that men are still going to Medellín in droves. The only way this is going to stop is if every guy becomes terrified and thinks he's going to get killed. Obviously that's not happening because these types of crimes just continue to occur. And if that does ever happen, what that's really going to do is discourage all foreigners from dating Antioquenas. Paisas in general would develop a bad rep as being "Scope Sisters." On the other hand, this entire thing would be a non-issue if the dating scene in the United States hadn't deteriorated into a pustle of feces. It's only my opinion, but that's what I have to say.
You just touched on a very important point. The dating scene in the US is terrible why there are many men travelling to Colombia for sex and criminals in Colombia knows this. This is why criminals are basing their whole hustle on swindling foreigners
@@jakemccoy Yeah plus the Colombian gov doesn't give a damn about its citizens. They keep them oppressed and poor so they can stay in power. And I agree about dating in the US gone terrible. I don't even bother looking at a cute American female nowadays anymore. I get a headache thinking about her long list of expectations. F that
Dude, I'm from Medellin and been 30 years living here. The girls that are honest or nice are neither on dating apps or hunting for men on the streets. Do not trust, and don't ever think you're so handsome all of them are coming closer to you with good intention. If they reach you, they may not be the indicated ones. Also, sorry to say but good weather and cheap living doesn't come free... The price we pay is living in danger. Hope y'all stay safe, sorry to hear that.
For vacation, I imagine a place where I can accidentally fall asleep on the beach or at a cafe, wake up, say “oops”, and then walk home. But in Colombia, there is a high chance of not waking up at all.
Great video. If you're a well versed Traveller/Backpacker, then most of this will be obvious stuff. And you'll probably be safer because of this: Nobody should visit Medellin, unless they fully understand the basic safety precautions, they need to know. You're putting yourself at risk by simply being a well dressed Foreigner, by using your smartphone in the street, or using an outside ATM. As well as meeting the wrong kinds of people. Colombians are naturally wary of this, but Foreigners aren't necessarily. Rarely, you can even be walking along, then a Motorbike comes up with an armed person, pointing a gun at you. People might be paying attention to you, and be planning things... You need to have a good sense of people, and awareness of your environment when you are walking in less busy areas, etc. Be extra careful when it comes to nightlife and go out with good Friends you can trust. Etc.
The long game is the hardest to defend against. There is a guy in Cali who has lived here over 30 years and he got got by someone playing the long game as well and he is obviously not naive and speaks fluent Spanish.
Been going to Medellín for the past 20 years, tennis in estadio, hiking Tres Cruces etc. Since pandemic its a bit more dangerous. I'm pretty sure my total time maybe 14 months have been kinda lucky to have no real incidents. Maybe a close call or 2. Sad to say I'm done. Such a beautiful place.
I’ve been to Columbia and Medellin twice over last 5 years. I’m not sure when I’ll be back there again as there are other places to visit for variety. But your doing a good job in simply communicating what is happening or been happening and just making people aware whether they are there locally or elsewhere and not aware of things. Your informing people and some ways they can minimize their risk traveling to there. Yet that same advice serves when traveling to anywhere foreign country and just practicing safe travel techniques. We all have to be reminded to always be safe while traveling and just moving around locally.
Colombia is now level 3 safety (Reconsider traveling) and the borders are level 4 (Do not travel). David you're trying to sell it as a safe place (And you are a good guy in my opinion) but I unfortunately see the day that you will have to say it's just too dangerous.
lets be honest alot of the safety measures are politcial. not saying that certain places are not dangerous cause it definetly could be but there are places that are way worse in the usa just like their are spots that are bad in colombia that you dont want to get caught in
@@ksoccer32No. It's kinda different. I stayed with a doctor, tennis friend. I said well Laureles is pretty safe. He said ..no place is safe in Medellín. Be alert. By the way he and his girlfriend got robbed in traffic at a light. He got his car bullet proofed. Double windows etc. The car was so heavy it had trouble getting up to Rio Negro.
Take a look at which other countries are level 3, you’ll be surprised. My friend just got mugged and brutally beaten in Florida in a smaller beach town in the panhandle. Crime and horrible people aren’t bound by boarders.
Wow. So it sounds like the first rule to protect yourself is: DON'T USE DATING APPS! I'm not blaming the victims, but it seems that the common thread is that the men meet the woman on a dating app. So if you want to minimize your chances of being drugged or kidnapped by a woman, then don't use ANY dating apps in Colombia. I visited Bogota, Medellin, and Cartagena about 8 years ago and loved it. It WAS on my short list of retirement destinations. But I just can't justify it anymore. I don't want to live someplace where I have to "keep my head on a swivel" or can't use my phone out in public. I don't want to live in a place where even the locals are wary and distrusting of each other. I'm looking to leave the US to get away from this kind of stress. Oh, and David, when you profess your continued love for Medellin, you sound like a parent professing their love for their child who can't stay out of prison, LOL. "Yes, he's done some bad things, but I still love him. I will always love him." 🤣
Wow, thanks for the words of precaution about Medellin. I am currently researching the logistics of getting some major dental work done in Colombia (which would cost me $10K in Colombia vs. $40-$50K in the US), which would require a 1 week stay. As a pale skinned middle aged East Asian from the US, I suspect that I will be a very, very highly visible target for mugging/kidnapping, regardless of how I am dressed. If you were in my shoes, would you think it is worth coming to Colombia for this? To be clear, I have no intention of going out at night or even having a single drink. Is daytime exploration out of the question for me?
You should be fine. The bad people are mostly targeting guys looking to hook up with girls. They do what’s called a honey trap. For what you are going to do. Just research really well the dentist to make sure they are reputable.
Just got back from a boy's trip to Colombia. It has to be the only international trip that I've regretted. I was relieved when the trip ended due to the stresses of being over there.

People have to realize Medellin has 4 million people, incidents like this are not common. In a city with 4 million people, there are going to be tragedies that occur unfortunately. I’ve been to parts of medellin where I felt safer than several parts of the USA. The USA has 4 cities with higher murder rates than any city in Colombia. You do have to be more skeptical with meeting people in Colombia generally , that is true. But the fact that there are several cities with higher murder rates in the USA than any city in Colombia shows that you gotta be careful everywhere.
That's insane. Every Colombian has been robbed at least once and has a family member who has been killed in the conflicts here. US isn't remotely as dangerous as Medellin. The stats out of the mayor's office are total BS, just talk to anyone
@@THGY123 it does increase the risk, although the same things happen to locals, or even worse. It doesn't matter if you're giving papaya or whatever, you'll eventually get robbed. It's just a low-trust society with no state presence.
Yup, I'd mich rather go to somewhere like Peru or Chile. You probably don't have to deal with as many tourists either. Granted, you should always he alert in South/Central America. I got myself into a couple sticky situations in Guatemala, thankfully I spoke really good spanish at the time. A lot of people didn't think I was American either.
Its only a matter of time before they target the wrong person. Talking to a Russian buddy of mine who used to know mobsters. If you did that to one of their guys they would send a whole hit team. They would wipe out their entire village if they felt it was necessary and be out of the country before anyone knew anything. These gangs targeting tourists are not very smart because eventually it catches up to you. I know the American military has a plan to go after cartels in the next year or so, full blown deployment. They have made agreements with all the governments of Central and South America. Those wild west days will be coming to an end soon. They messed around one too many times. They use Space Force to track movements, cell phone use, bank card use, and computer use. They already know who they are and where they will run to. Enjoy the show.
I’ve been saying it needs to happen for a long time. Their governments are beholden they won’t do anything to stop the crime but it NEEDS to end for the betterment of the innocent people there. The only way I see that happening is if the US gets involved
So many other places to visit in this world. I'm definitely scratching Columbia of my to visit list. I know theres alway a risk but It seems really dangerous there.
Please don't come, I say it with respect, another of the reasons why this happens is that we are tired of tourists coming to meet womens and more, in a normal proportion of tourists it is fine, but they go too far, It's something that sooner or later has to happen, Medellin is a city like another, not a tourist destination for foreigners, which because of its qualities turned it into that
Medellin is a beautiful city with beautiful people who have been exploited by tourists thinking of being a tourist destination to meet women and more, we are tired of that, that's why it happens
@@DavidEspinosa-jh5vySo the tourists are gang banging and running crime syndicates bruh? Anyway tourists are going to go small in numbers (it's not even that high currently) and the criminals will just be fully targeting locals again, and judging by your attitude you need the wake up call.
Go to south bronx, Brownsville or east Harlem in NYC. Skid row in LA, West Garfieldn Park in Chicago or any other major city in the USA, you will also need to be in the look out. Not much different. On the other hand, I guess... the bad press is beneficial. If people stop coming here, it will calm down the gentrification and rental prices. Locals are having a hard time affording to live in their own Land. Thanks for the convenient bad press. Much appreciated.
I'm in Medellín right now (with my family, so not doing the dating scene). IMO, (mostly) American men who came down here to prey on attractive but economically distressed Colombian women have instead found themselves being hunted. There's another TH-camr who does these "Dating in Colombia" videos. I watch his stuff and just laugh; he's just setting people up for the kill. Guys, if you're struggling in the U.S. dating scene, coming to a country which only in the recent past was the pioneer in the industrialization of crime is not going to solve your problem. If you can't speak a lick of Spanish or you can't tell a Colombian girl from a decent family from a desperate Venezuelan refugee DON'T COME HERE. YOU will become the next contestant on that Summer Jam screen. I will admit though, that 🎂 is a severe temptation. I went to an event last night where I'm pretty sure I was the only foreigner. I felt perfectly safe, although I was also not putting myself in a position to be a target. The 🎂 on display was mouthwatering 😜. Look, but don't touch boys, unless you REALLY know what you are doing.
Bro it’s easy to always scapegoat the Venezuelans but there’s colombia a doing the exact same bullshit. Being desperate doesn’t justify turning to a live of crime and violence. I do agree tho if you’re a pesky sex tourist that doesn’t get 🐱 in his own country then you don’t have to wonder why people target you
Colombia is a wonderful country with all the photographs, from beaches, deserts, mountains, plains, great variety, Medellin the city of eternal spring in Colombia, good video. 8:00.
My entire family was planning to move back to Colombia after 20 years living abroad, but things seem to be getting worst and violence, etc. Also, having an “ex” guerrilla as President made things really bad
That is too much chaos for this old guy. I am living in Batumi, Georgia to escape all the violence in the US. As beautiful as Medellin is, I just couldn't deal with all this you talk about. 😞

His brother I believe said he did not send him the money, he called him the next day and his phone was disconnected. He met her on a dating app. That’s where locals find targets.
This is really scary stuff. I no longer have a desire to visit Colombia, after years of mentally planning to check out the country. I know a Colombian here in Boston. He's from Medellin. Whenever I mention an incident in the news to him, involving a tourist in Medellin, he insists it's Venezuelans. He says they're the ones who like killing. But I don't think so. I think he just cannot accept that his beloved city is starting to fall back to its old ways.
Colombians are very patriotic. They will not admit wrong doing and they will blame any incident on the victim “ giving papaya”. Specially people from Medellin (paisas). Don’t believe what he says. This is coming from a Colombian too.
I just got robbed biking from Manta to Playa Marianita. They took my backpack and bicycle. Obviously I was not being situationally aware as I was biking through these poor barrios to get to my destination. Red flag No 1: Two guys circling on a motorbike. Solution: Run. Red flag No. 2: Overly friendly locals who don't catch your initial hint to fuck off. And Red Flag No.: Do not wear nice clothes, no watches and when out, wear old shoes, and leave your wallet and passport and bank/credit cards and your cell phone behind. Bring just the absolute maximum money you may need for the day. And if you are really scared of being mugged from behind, walk backwards. Not too worried to be kidnapped. My family would pay them to keep me.
His name was Tou Ger Xiong, a diversity consultant, comedian, storyteller, and rapper according to wikipedia. He is on the list of well known Hmong people of the world, so he's not a "nobody". Appears he had ties to the Fresno Cali area as well as Minnesota. I'd expect the Asian-American community wont simply, with the Hmong communities leading the charge, "let this go"....so there will be continued pressure from the USA for Colombia to find justice for their citizen.
I loved visiting Colombia. Beautiful landscapes, friendly locals and everything’s super cheap. However, I find that you always have to look over your shoulder and can never fully relax when out in public. I’ve been to many other places in Latin America where that isn’t the case, so I’ll be sticking to those places from now on and discovering new ones.
@the_wanderer5536 Jardín and Jerico too. Many people are painting broad strokes in these comments in regards to saftey/crime. Hell, there's places I felt much safer in when visiting Colombia than I do in any number of places in the United States.

Hey man, appreciate the video. I'm planning to go mid November, but I'm in doubt due to safety .. Because we would like to go out in Medelling. Not looking for pay to play, but just going out for some drinks, dance, flirt, etc. Can you enjoy yourself while going out in El Poblado for example? I won't be traveling alone, but with a big latino guy who speaks Spanish and lived there for 3 years. I already aware of watching your drinks, don't accept drinks from others etc. What do you think?
Im from Mexico city and i thought about visiting Colombia but a few friends of mine who are colombian did warn me about not going out there since its not doing good for now. I know every country has its ups and downs and hopefully everyone stays safe and do more research. I've had people tell me there afraid of going to Mexico as well. :)
Objectively speaking Mexico has 8 of the top 10 most dangerous cities in the world by homicide rate. I love visiting tho. Btw Medellin doesn't even make top 50
This could easily be solved by the government getting involved… but it’s sad that they don’t seem to care. Usually in countries that rely on tourist dollars the police will go out of their way to punish the people who are targeting foreigners. I don’t know why that isn’t happening in Medellín… esp after they spent so much time rehabbing the image of the city (and the country). I’m glad that I got to visit in early 2020 right before covid because I had a great time… but it’s hard to envision myself going back given the risk factor.
I lived in Medellin for about 3 years before the "two weeks to flatten" the economy. I moved to a smaller city, and I have made 3 trips back to consider returning to Medellin, but I'm taking that off the table. Medellin today is nothing like it was 4 years ago, and I won't be going back except to visit.
I was there a few months ago and it wasn't any different then 2 years ago when I first went, besides alot of the street hoes being cleaned up off the streets I didn't notice a difference 😂 but inflation def hit so that's probably what's driving the crime uptick
I use to be an avid Uribe supporter. Then slowly but surely information began to surface about his close ties to murderous paramilitary groups and Narcos like "Pablito". The final straw for me was the case of the 6500 falso positivos. Apparently, his administration tolerated and some even say, he encouraged. Falso positivos were innocent boys and men and some girls who were tricked into thinking they were needed to perform some labor or work at some company or for a wealthy individual for example, only to be murdered later and dressed up as guerrilla fighters and then were paid bounties by the military. There's no excuse for such vile actions by anyone. Especially by the powers that be. So, even though Uribe did a lot to hasten the demise of the FARC, his hands aren't clean and he should face the justice system.
I have been here 7 years. I love Medellin but unfortunately everything you say is true. I cant tell you how many foreigners that I have met, that were living here or visiting that got scopolamined by a chick on a date or robbed at gunpoint. Just one example, about a year ago I met a American guy at a bar that had just moved here. He was telling be about a chick he was seeing. A few days later he took this girl he was seeing to dinner in the nicest most expensive neighborhood in town (Provenza) this was 9 PM on a Sunday night . When they left she had her buddies waiting outside, they robbed him at gunpoinI . According to the police he resisted and they shot him dead. I read about him the next day in the paper. Something I hear all the time when speaking to Colombians that don't realize I live here. It is not "welcome enjoy the city" or "you have to eat at this restaurant" or anything like that. It is if you get robbed give up you money because they will kill you without thinking twice. I have now moved out of Medellin proper because #1 the price of living has exploded and #2 the increasing violence. Since I moved here I have seen it getting worse, you now not only seeing the increasing crime rates being committed by Colombians but also a large increase in crimes by Ven. immigrants. It is a unfortunate truth about this beautiful city.
I'm traveling to Colombia in February for 3 weeks. Landing in Medellin and already have a room reserved for two nights in the Laureles neighborhood. I wanted something quieter than Poblados. From all the videos I'm watching lately it's making me feel like maybe I should get the heck out of Medellin as quickly as possible. I'm more introverted so not a partier or overly social. I'm more into Nature and low key chill interactions with people. I'm looking forward to going to Manizales and visiting some natural areas around there, maybe including a hike around Los Nevados park. I'm also interested in visiting some small towns in that area before heading further south to Popayan where I want to go visit the arqueological ruins of San Agostin. I have to return to Medellin to catch my flight back. Hopefully I can enjoy the country and not encounter any drama/dangerous situations . . .
Parque de Los Nevados is definitely worth checking out. If you do, check out the town of Murillo too and the Murillo Travel Store. Ask for Felipe or Cristina (owners). Definitely bring some warmer/waterproof gear to trek around the park. Manizales is nice and quiet comparatively for Colombia.
I think you could still enjoy yourself but if you're a real introvert then you may be overwhelmed. Street hustlers, music everywhere, loud and fast paced. If you're a nature guy theres a lot to see but you may find it difficult to find especially if you don't speak decent spanish.
I'm pretty much the same personality type and have managed to deal with and survive living in Medellín for three years now, but I think I'm ready for a change - and Manizales is definitely on my radar. Your trip strategy sounds good to me, and I hope you enjoy your time here.
Lets put it like this medellin for a tourist..soon as you land in medellin its like jail..youre Free but its like jail and prison..and it really feels like that..
I have been watching DC Rob channel and he reports on the activities going on in Medellin also and there has been so many robberies...deaths and killings in Medellin in the past two months that it's crazy
I have read so many reports about the danger of Colombia. I no longer consider it as a long term place to live if I have to worry about my safety at all times.
The story you relate is tragic. You can't judge an entire country on one tragedy. People often make judgements on the US based on mass shootings. I don't know if the victim spoke Spanish or not. That does make a difference. People who go to other countries and speak only English are, unfortunately, easier targets. It's hard to be a good judge of character when you don't speak the other person's language. I've been to Colombia four times. I've met many people on my trips and I've never had a bad experience. I speak Spanish. It makes a significant difference. Generally you're more respected if you speak Spanish, even as your second language. I'm planning my next trip to Colombia. I now prefer Bogota to Medellin mostly because in Bogota the digital nomads are less conspicuous. In some parts of Medellin, like Laureles, they stick out like a sore thumb.
if youre scared, if you look white, if you dont speak spanish, if you have never been to jail before to test to see how well you are around criminals dont go.
End of 2022. No, my Colombian friends taught me a lot about the country. I left because of the influx of foreigners and targeting of foreigners. @@TobyNomad
More “passport bros” should share stuff like this. I’ve seen a major bump in the number of American dudes everywhere. They’re not ready. Most seem like good suburban or liberal nice guys who tend to have a misconception of what safety and risk is. I’ve been to Medellin and I’m going back. But I don’t dress like I have money, I don’t go out drinking, my head is on a swivel.

You can easily be target from the moment you arrive to the airport. Believe it or not. 😢
There are many white latinos out there. Latino is only a cultural tag and its people come in any race under the sun or mix of, including most certainly white.
It beggars belief that a latino precisely would have been brainwashed into thinking there are not.

Semana has a detailed news article titled

What strip club was it?
It wasn't even a strip club. It was a bar with girls with white uniforms called Baru Bar in Llares. Literally went there for one beer and grab something small to each and got tricked into buying girls drinks and they came back to me with a bill 0f 1500 US. I stupidly dropped my guard but this was a brick and morter bar and it was still daylight when I went in. Went to cops and most of them were in cohoots with the owner. Its beyond crazy. @@JohnSmith-dm1wo

Other than security, taxes are very high and worrying. If you stay in Colombia for more than 6 months, you have to file your tax. It means that a group of people in DIAN have information about your worldwide assets, and this information can leak into the wrong hands.

that is very good intel and doesn’t get airplay. thanks
I don't even think having streetsmarts is enough. People simply need to realize if they come down here and mingle with people they're at risk.
Knowing what I know now about Colombia I would not have used Tinder in such a caviler fashion as I did two years ago, especially in cities like Bogota, Cartagena, and Medellin!
sad. i was exactly where david is for 3 months. medellin girls are 10s. but now i wont go
From my expierence Medellin is the worse
@kurrwa The coast in my opinion is the worst representation of Colombia. People are rude and they try to rip you off every chance they get. No desire to ever return to either Santa Marta or Barranquilla.

@FreedomTravels720 Divorced once already to an American girl. I am a grizzled veteran in that arena. Don't worry about me my friend.
Small towns are also at risks
Especially rebel groups
Antioquia has some great small towns as well. I would recommend Jardin and Jerico!
@moshesierra6849 You obviously have to be smart about the regions you choose.
U mean girls r not dangerous?
I think if u eat, sleep, walk ,live in good area or do not take any body into ur room ,I do not think any one will be captured.
70 foreigners killed this year my friend and the year is not over , it is pretty bad right now.
81 % increase in kidnapping compared to last year per el colombiano

you dont even want to know how many people are getting robbed here at gunpoint. i was robbed about 2 blocks from there the guy in the video is. it was 2:00 PM on a thusday! sold my apartment in medellin, you cant relax in this city, wont miss it! all you single men enjoy the cheap transactional pussy!
Thanks for the updates David very helpful. Your information could definitely help save peoples lives. Great work.
I was drugged in Bogota back in 2021, but even after that happened, I spent 6 more months in Colombia and was perfectly safe and had a great time.

I’m glad you brought this up David you can see the criminals are changing there tactics on tourist 👍

Hola amigo Que tal parece

And you'll probably be safer because of this:
Nobody should visit Medellin, unless they fully understand the basic safety precautions, they need to know.

Been to Colombia twice but can't spell it correctly? Yeah right
Colombia is now level 3 safety (Reconsider traveling) and the borders are level 4 (Do not travel). David you're trying to sell it as a safe place (And you are a good guy in my opinion) but I unfortunately see the day that you will have to say it's just too dangerous.
He did get robbed at gunpoint one time. So I think he's been transparent about his experiences.
lets be honest alot of the safety measures are politcial. not saying that certain places are not dangerous cause it definetly could be but there are places that are way worse in the usa just like their are spots that are bad in colombia that you dont want to get caught in
@@ksoccer32No.
And those ratings are based on stats that don’t have all the crime data, because many crimes are unreported, under investigation, unresolved, etc.

People have to realize Medellin has 4 million people, incidents like this are not common. In a city with 4 million people, there are going to be tragedies that occur unfortunately.

His brother I believe said he did not send him the money, he called him the next day and his phone was disconnected. He met her on a dating app. That’s where locals find targets.
David I appreciate the information and your time.
*I mean Medellin use to be the cocaine capital of the world...*
@@Jay-jb2vr and usa is one of the largest importer of the cocain they produce. So it works both ways
@Gus5515 Not my point....a city that use to be the drug kingpin capital of the world, is still going to be very much dangerous, years later 💯
@Gus5515 yes, Americans have a drug problem, that's a widely known fact
I visited bogota in October. First and last time i will ever go to colombia. To risky. It's pretty crazy there.
Why didn't you fight like a man!
in his story, the guys family paid and he was still murdered
What places in Latin America do you recommend visiting?
In the Colombian cities, I agree. But I thought Salento and Filandia and Villa de Leyvas were pretty safe.

I was there in Medallo in August and LOVE it. Cant wait to go back. I traveled solo and didnt have any issues. Its all about how you carry yourself.
Thank you for the warning. Have a good Christmas.
Because of my age, I have many Colombian friends in 50's, and thats why they love Uribe. They remember the dark days in 80's, 90's and early 2000's
Uribe assassin more than 6.402 innocent people and pass them as criminals/ is what we call falsos positivos- you can search that on google facts
Just stay off Online dating. But you will need more time to meet a regular woman. Meaning, not a criminal character.
Saludos Compa
I have been watching DC Rob channel and he reports on the activities going on in Medellin also and there has been so many robberies...deaths and killings in Medellin in the past two months that it's crazy
I have read so many reports about the danger of Colombia. I no longer consider it as a long term place to live if I have to worry about my safety at all times.
Rather than worry about all the dangers to foreigners in Colombia I have this trick I use. I just don't go.
Meddy is a beautiful city with awesome people. It lures you in and becomes a part of your life. It's heartbreaking to see stuff like this happen.
Please don’t call it meddy lmao
Medallo NOT Meddy, please
Cringe!
You make me changing my plan to visit
if youre scared, if you look white, if you dont speak spanish, if you have never been to jail before to test to see how well you are around criminals dont go.
It's not worth it. I left Colombia after living there for 5 years.
When did you leave? And were you ever mugged with a knife or gun?
End of 2022. No, my Colombian friends taught me a lot about the country. I left because of the influx of foreigners and targeting of foreigners. @@TobyNomad
Awesome info and video, I am traveling to Medellin in 3 weeks for vacation and watching all these videos to be prepared.
David, thank you for the update. Sad to say but it seems like it's becoming as dangerous as some places in Mexico.
I still could end up kidnapped of course, but it’s like putting an alarm on my car when these other dudes have a wide open door. These newbie “passport bros” are just easier marks.
Speaking of passport bros, the girls that grow up in these hood environments end up being street smart af and so instead of being Chads the girl ends up protecting them from what's out there. Ironic.
