- Visiting Krakow Poland after many years. It had many surprises for us, we didn't expect it to be such a nice place, especially to live if you want to move to Europe.

Fact that they had straight faces. didn't smile doesn't mean they were rude - they were not sarcastic as well :) As you admitted, even the PA was "rude" :) I understand in US or in Columbia people smile a lot but lack of it or a somber tone doesn't mean they are rude :)

In September 2022, I spent 13 days in Poland. I started in Gdansk and attended a Dozynki Harvest Festival and even broke bread with the village leaders in a small town outside of Gdansk. Then, I headed to Torun to learn about the amazing astronomer, Copernicus. Then, off to Warsaw and Krakow. I saved the best for last, The Majestic Tatras Mtns, in Zakopane! Everyone was very friendly and nice. I traveled solo, and a nice young man sat down next to me and asked, what are you up to today? We made fast friends on a crowded 45 min. shuttle to the national park to the trail to hike to Morskie Oko. When we got off, he introduced me to his friends and told them where I have been in their country and that I love Poland! It all started after I met another nice Polish man on the Faroe Islands. Then, on Grimsey Island, I met a British man married to a Polish woman who told me to go to Poland. True story. ❤😊

@@user-ud4vo2zr3z Bredzisz. Mieszkam tu, zaczynam mieć dość nadmiaru turystów ale tacy jak ten pan - autor filmu, są jak najbardziej mile widziani. Przecież kupił bilety tramwajowe, kupił jedzenie (normalne - pierogi), zrobił sympatyczny film, podobało mu się. Cichy, spokojny, grzeczny, czysty. Jak widać niektórzy autochtoni u nas zawsze czegoś muszą się czepić.

It's not that we are rude, we are just minding our own businesses and don't smile at everyone without a reason, also we don't small talk, we always go straight to the point and don't bother other people without a reason.

@@LifewithDavid ....I would say that we dont need a big reason to smile, it is enough that we are talking to each other for example in a restaurant when we buy food there. Customer service person can smile and not be like somebody who looks like bothered or bored.

My experience with Poland was that everyone was very helpful
It never ceases to amaze me how many people can speak some level of English in these foreign countries that aren't even especially close to the English-speaking world. Not just tourist-serving businesses but even random people on the street.

why should you be surprised, it's Europe, people speak different languages, Poland is a Central European country, a tourist country, children are taught English at school from an early age, sometimes French or Spanish, I know 3 languages, I understand at least 7, mainly Slavic ones
Young generations who grew up in free Poland (from communism, russian influence) had and still have compulsory English lessons in schools. People who are now over 40 years old grew up in a different era, where russian was the compulsory language, so they weren`t taught English. That's why on the streets of Krakow, for example, in this video, you can see how freely younger people behave when it comes to your language (we know it) and what older people who have never had contact with your language do ;). That's why I recommend tourists to talk to the younger generation, you will be able to communicate with them without any problems.

Well after russian occupation end in 1989 in schools instead russian language, people get english language to learn :) my both parents speaks russian, when i and my brother 1989+ speaks english so most of the younger people speak english.

18:18 That's the Kraków barbican, a late Medieval fortress that served additional protection to the main city gate shown at 18:20 . The barbican, the main gate and fragments of the wall with 3 towers are the last remains of the Medieval city fortifications. The park you walked through surrounding the old town is actually a perfect outline of where the city walls once stood. So if you look at the city from above you can actually see the outline of how it looked like in the Middle Ages. Pretty cool if you think about it.

Congratulations, you passed the meeting with the "kanar" (this is the colloquial name for ticket inspectors in Krakow:) This one was on the level - he recognized the tourists, the local would have received a fine of about PLN 120. I had a similar experience when going to the airport in Rome, I bought a ticket but I didn't recognize validate it on the platform not inside the train were was no vaidation machine. I also found an understanding controller.
As a Czech, I am surprised they actually helped to him, here in Czechia, they target tourists on purpose and they have no mercy.

Did I hear you say Prague. This city is amazing. The Charles bridge has been in several movies. I remember Mission Impossible and Spider-Man and I’m sure there are a few others. The Polish people are not really rude. They are just, what I call dry, you know Colombians want to spend 30 minutes talking and sticking their nose in all your business. Remember The Central and Eastern Europeans lived under communism so this explains why they are so dry. I thought the same thing until I spent a lot of time there and just realized it’s the way they were raised. A lot of them have a fantastic sense of humor once you learn the way to interpret them. Thanks for showing us Kraków , that was an awesome video!! As far as people in the public sector being rude it's just part of a way of life in Europe in general I find. I lived six years in Germany and I'm not defending rudeness but just like Colombians are generally friendly (lived 2 years in Medellin) it's part of their culture it's completely normal to be in a public service job in Europe and just be to the point and straightforward they don't believe in niceties or politeness as we know it. However I have to say speaking of cultures I would take the safety of Europe along with their coldness or rudeness as you say, over the insecurity and always having to live with my head on a swivel as I did when I lived in Colombia.

One very important tip- YOU CANT CROSS STREETS ON red LIGHTS , and You can’t cross any streets unless on the white stripes . You are gonna get ticket or get rode over by tram

Krakow is definitely a gorgeous city. It's on my bucket list now thanks to you David. I'll visit during the spring when the weather is cool to a little warm. that's my type of weather like in Oriente Antioqueño, Colombia.

Great video David. I once backpacked through Europe solo back in the spring of 1981. Crazy adventures, with loads of interesting personalities. One guy I remember, looked like Charles Manson. Dude was an Australian Army Veteran who had been a Sniper in Vietnam. Had been riding the rails through Europe for ten years, strung out on PTSD with no final destination? Crazy experiences from another version of Europe
I bet times were even more interesting back then.
Most of us buys goceries in markets. You can google shops like Biedronka, Lidl or Kaufland and check one of them. All of them have bakery, meat and vegetable stall.
Vhen I visited Krakow, I had the same problem - no supermarkets around, I found that I have one literally 1 minute walk from my hotel in last day. 🙂 They are hidden inside of buildings. It's like that even here in Prague in center, there are supermarkets, but mostly located in underground or it's masked inside of some historical building.

However, please take under consideration that (1) you did not asked her if she didn't mind / would like to be filmed (2) she's from a bit older / middle generation.
You can see at the look she took at 23:31 - she had noticed she was being filmed.
Many people get tensed when filmed (especialy without prior notification / asking).
I'm actually rather impressed how well she's handled converstaion in English. For her generation it's quite remarkeable.
We like foreigners here in Krakow. I personally love any opportunity to speak foreign languages with them. However, in recent years/days it's simply becoming so many (too many?) tourists.
All in all, the little detail / coultural difference you might have missed in this interacion was your partner filming the lady without even notyfinyg/ asking her about it.
There's plenty of big supermarkets and shopping centers. "Galeria Krakowska"- a shopping mall is just a short walk from the city center and there's carrefour on the -1 floor. Most people buy groceries in the supermarkets because such open markets like Nowy Kleparz are just a few in all of Kraków. But they are definitely a nice place to go, as the food is often healthier and the prices are better.
As for the "rudeness"- they're really not being rude. That's just a cultural difference. You expect constant smiling and small talk type of interactions, but frankly, to us it's something that feels unnatural and forced. I like to think that people in this part of the world just evolved differently, because of different environment- we're very economical in our behavior. So we keep the neutral face and prefer directness, because smiles and niceties cost energy, which should be saved for other things- like surviving cold winters and fighting agressive neighbors 😂

As much as I like your video, I have to comment your comments about the lady on bus station. Exactly which part of interaction you find rude?? The thing, she wasn't giving you a smile? She gave you all information you needed, she saw you recording her maybe she wasn't super comfortable with that, maybe bad day. ALSO Poles they are very critic for themselves when they use English or any other florigen language - maybe that was the reason she didn't want to interact to much. I'm a Pole and for now I live in UK, I see here a lot of smile I hear a lot of "hi love/darling/whatever", but as the time goes (over 10 years now) I can see which smile is honest which is just "worker mask". You pend long minutes criticizing her, which wasn't nice as well (rude?) .
Remember that people in middle and in Europe at all have bit different background than in warmer parts of world. That's just how it is.
PS I'm not sure how it is in other European countries, but in Poland when you walking in to someone's house, restaurant, church, public anything - hospital, office, and you're a man - you should take off your head cover. [exceptions are shops]

6:03 @LifewithDavid you could go to the next stop by the tramway (Bratysławska), there is big hipermarket - Kaufland, but you were a little bit right about small grocerie stores in Poland :D We like doing shopping there, because we can but fresh vegetables, meat and other food in much better quality :D
Btw, if you're still in Kraków try bus line LR0 to beautiful place Ojców, but be aware, it's crowded, so take it from the first stop Os. Podwawelskie

@@LifewithDavid To be precise, it is the "Ojców National Park". LR0 its a holiday bus (tickets are the same as for regular public transport). You get off at the last stop in the forest and turn right. You walk for about half an hour through a beautiful valley surrounded by limestone rocks and you reach the trout farm "Pstrąg Ojcowski" for which Ojców is famous. You can rent a fishing rod and catch it by yourself. I also recommend visiting the nearby caves (they are along the way). Be sure to bring cash and save a map of the area offline because there is no wifi/range there.
I saw that "no valid bus ticket", and immediately checked the comments to see if you got caught lol.

For me as a Czech, it's super confusing when light is not in middle of zebra, I just don't see those lights when it's not located in middle, it happened to me in a lot of countries, I just don't see light, I need them in middle of crossing. It's weird that such detail can make you not see lights.

Next time it's better to buy tickets ahead of time in the bigger machines you can encounter on some stops because they take both cash and card. Unfortunately some trams and buses still have coins only machines OR card only machines.

Go to Żabka shop, they are everywhere and ask a local to register it. It it fast. Im not sure if u can do i it on foregin passport or id. There is plenty of options with GB from start. It shouldnt be hard. Żabka on every corner. Green sign.

@@LifewithDavid Culturaly yes, geographically? Partly, it's hard to say, but when it's more close to Lisbon then to eastern border of Europe, it's just weird to call it eastern europe. Countries like Poland and Czechia are called Eastern Europe because of 40 years of communism, which is very offensive.

These are not 'metros' - These are Trams.

@@LifewithDavidmetros are the ones underground. Trains usually are for taking people outside the city to other parts. Trams are for the inner city transport. I think in colombia there is one tram system or is it a metro? It's in medellin, a pretty new system still but in the past there used to be trams i believe in medellin but fell out of use. Now perhaps this is meant to bring them back there. In Europe trams been running in various towns and cities for a long time. Not all countries have them (lithuania doesn't) but many do. In the neighboring latvia there are three different train systems in three different cities
Why you not using Uber/Bolt it’s so cheap and easy to get around especially if it’s more than one person :)
The trams in Kraków are charming. The old town is pedestrianized so walking or the trams are the best way to go.

...no kidding, what is wrong with you? Are you inviting people to your country, or not? They pay, respect your rules, and eat your food. Why is it so difficult to be helpful, to smile when they are buying and paying ? Smile makes tourists feel welcome, costs nothing.
And pointing camera to everyone, that's considered super rude without asking. Here in Czechia, some older person could even hit him for that.
