  • Real Talk about why I don't like living in the United States anymore and why I can't see myself ever returning. I had invested a lot of time and money to research and travel the world to find where I best fit in, which culture I feel more comfortable in. After almost 6 years of continues life abroad, I really can't see myself ever going back.

Sage words amigo. For me its is also important to walk around and get to know a city... especially one as beautiful and green as Medellin (well the flat parts like Laureles). I grew up in Virginia, but my family moved to England when I was 12. America is in some trouble with plenty divisive rhetoric amongst people and politicians. Not to mention an over consumerist society. I don't think there is much hope for its future unless people come together and realise what is truly important in life.

Neighbors will not talk to eachother unless they sit out front on their porches/ verandas in summer . Now these suburbs have no outdoor spaces for neighborhoods to talks and chat . I’m from Chile and met a now crazy American woman and ended up marrying her and moved to the US, very much against my instincts. 20 years later and three kids and now divorced all I want is to go back, I’ve never liked it here, it’s all about money and politics, and most people are stressed out, overworked, angry, unfriendly, intolerant, and competitive….I miss my culture everyday, I’m down to a couple of friends who are not Americans either and they hate it here and want to go back too. What’s sad is how ignorant Americans are of the rest of the world and what little they know about life in other places where people might not be rich but they live basic human lives with lots of friends, family, parties, and naps in the middle of the day.

Consumerism culture, no walkable, tense atmosphere surrounding many things, and overall highly competitive place. I live in Mexico and Colombia, split between each. Many people I talk to cite the stress of living in the US as their main reason why they left and won't go back. I suspect the stress is also contributing to the aggression that you discussed.
I also think we have created a hermit culture in the US because, as you stated, we go to our jobs and come home, shut the doors, and spend the evenings by ourselves doing whatever. We don't make time to go out and have to schedule appointments with friends. Nobody is spontaneous anymore. You can't just call a friend and go do something.
But we need to be busy with our jobs in order to pay for our overpriced homes and new cars. We demand this lifestyle and it comes with lots of work and stress.
And don't get me started on dating. It's a terrible, awful mess and has been for years. The social life in the US is horrible.

It feels like a competition they want to win just to feel better about themselves. And when you tell them about living happily in another country, they look at you as if you have totally lost your mind and need to be on some kind of psychotropic medication.😆 BTW, I'm a fellow Texan and have lived also in el DF, Mexico. I lived for several years in Medellin and own a condo in Cali, but let’s be real. Colombia has a lot of things working against it. It is very dangerous and has an abysmal economy. David is fortunate because he can make money off TH-cam. Imported goods are very expensive. Every day errands take forever to do. And forget about the convenience and comfort of the US. Forget most hobbies too. Having said all that, I will probably move back in a few years. LOL.

    • @RedScareClair
      @RedScareClair ปีที่แล้ว +6

Right but that is what comes with a pace of life that is slower and a country that isn't hypercapitalistic. Sure, Amazon's 2 day shipping is convenient but the cost is miserable employees that are over worked, underpayed, and treated less than human. They get notified that they are taking too long if they stop at a gas station to get a snack and to pee. They get fired via text message. Amazon literally epitomizes everything David said he hates in the video.
So it becomes a cycle. Miserable, antisocial people that don't need to leave their homes to get anything anymore that then go back to a miserable job they hate so they can get me stuff they don't need shipped to their door.
Lastly, the US is pretty dangerous as well. It was only a few months ago that some guy shot up a super market full of elderly people and a couple of weeks later another psycho locks himself inside of a 4th grade classroom with an AR-15 and killed people's babies.
So yeah... Let's be real... Do you want to be somewhere where people are more relaxed and maybe commit crimes because the economy is slow or do you want to be burned out and angry at the world but you were able to get your dog nail clippers without leaving your home?

David. I understand you perfectly. You definitely have a Latin soul. The loneliness of the streets in the United States was the most negative impression I had when I went to that country as a student. It seemed to me an oppressive and aggressive loneliness. You could drop dead on the sidewalk and it would be hours before anyone found out. I also like to walk, in fact I am a hiker in the countryside, and I walk at least 10,000 steps every day in the city. I hardly use the car. Like you, many foreigners are happy here basically because they find life in the streets and in its friendly, curious and talkative inhabitants. Here in Colombia there is human warmth, friendship, affection and solidarity with the other. Without this, life is not worth it. Your reflections as an American seem very valuable to me because you have discovered that there are other ways of living in the world that are more welcoming and rewarding than the "American dream" without the absurd wasteful consumerism. Your phrase that "the best things in life don't really cost anything" defines your philosophy of life. Congratulations David.

This. As an european I noticed it is nigh impossible to have a normal, chatty conversation with most americans. In most of the interactions with them they either try to one-up you on something, covertly criticize you or use you in some way. It is really draining and it can end up making you cynical or antisocial.

I was born in the USA and my parents and grand parents were not immigrants, so I have no ties to another country, and I agree with what you said about the USA. Actually, I'm going to start living in other countries and experiencing other cultures soon. I haven't decided which country I will ultimately settle in, it depends on what I learn from my travels and which will be open to me immigrating there.
I'm older than you and grew up in an America very different than you did. I'm not exaggerating, the culture was very different. The neighbors all talked to each other and entire street block would be like a family with everyone watching the kids that would play in the narrow neighborhood street. Even as young as 6 years old, I could walk a couple of blocks away to visit friends without my parents around. There was always an adult looking out a window, in the yard, etc, keeping an eye out for us. We walked to school without adults, sometimes a mile or more. The neighbors would gather in each other's yards, pull up chairs, and talk. It was an open invitation. You didn't need some flashy material possession to impress anyone, just good conversation. We also had lots of neighborhood activities involving both kids and adults, going to the lake, playing softball, etc. And adults having a beer when socializing outdoors was ok then.
Back then, politics didn't matter, friendships did. There were no school shootings. There was little violence and crime and no gangs, at least not in the small towns I lived in. I grew up in that America and had to watch this country decay over the decades. America can't continue in this decline without completely coming apart. I don't know when the breaking point will come, but I now believe it will years, not decades, and I won't be an American when that time comes, I'm done.

@@britneyt9253 The long answer would take a thick book to explain. The short answer is the news media acquiring significant reach and influence. The problems started with Broadcast TV. It's first effect was turning western culture upside down in the turbulant 1960s. The problem magnified with the addition of cable TV rapidly increasing news and opinion stations and 24-hr news. The clck bait internet and social media has exasperated the problem and will significantly hasten the downfall of the USA that began in the 1960s.

I moved to Spain in 1992. In 2021 I can safely say I will never move back to the states. My family stopped asking me when years ago. I always thought that living in the states was the deal until I moved to Europe. Your point about walking is right on. Here is Madrid there is so much to see when you walk not to mention the exercise. When I visit my family who live on a beautiful island on the coast of Georgia almost nobody walks. In fact, my partner and I were walking to the local super market 3 miles from my parents home after insisting to my mom that we would walk not drive. Some of their neighbors called the police to report two men walking in their neighborhood. The police asked us for I.D. and were firm but courteous. I have so many reasons for never returning to the states, now more than ever.

After 55 years of living in this country, I'm looking at Colombia and a few other countries that offer a lifestyle that's healthy and well-balanced. I'd rather splurge on a fantastic meal or weekend getaway rather than the latest electronic gadget. And then there's the sad and unsettling reality that American culture has steadily gotten more coarse over the last 40+ years that imagining a future here is nearly impossible. Kudos to you for taking that brave step towards a future YOU wanted when you started your journey 6 years ago. And btw, I'm so glad you're making videos again!

Brother I have to make a video on why I will never return to the United States because you were spot on. The consumerism society and lack of interaction with people and women, and how everyone stays in their homes 24/7 is depressing. Here in Mexico you'll see people out and about on the streets and in the malls and doing good. Even friendly neighbors in my gated neighborhood who are all locals and I'm the only American seem to be nice. When I left Alaska 2 years ago, I didn't care if I'd end up on the street, I was never going back to the USA. Moved down here with 500$ and credit card. I have grown tons financially since this time and don't regret my decision. If you are reading this leave the usa. The recession will break off the middle class next year. You touched on it, but one of the worst vulgarities in the States is the waste. It’s apparent right away. 1. Leaving your car running to keep it cool while you’re in the grocery store (often unattended). 2. You never see clothes hanging outside to dry. 3. Leave the lights and television on all day from morning to night. 4. Never bother to open the window coverings. 5. Throwing good food away. 6. I was in Cartagena last week and watched a US family throw in the dustbin at least $10 worth of just purchased food at Juan Valdez instead of keeping it for consuming later. The irony is that the majority of the population is in credit card debt beyond control. They never can take vacations because they fear for their job or else don’t have any money because they waste so much. The list goes in and on. Great video.

I'm an Australian and I've been to Colombia twice, and love the people and culture. Australia is very similar to the States in that urban sprawl is a huge factor in the lifestyle, so much of what you said about the States is so applicable. I usually choose to live in the inner-city suburbs of my hometown because it's much more sociable, but you summed it up better in that it's 'walkable'. Even what you said about being frugal resonates with me. I'm not an aspirational person by nature, at least not where money is concerned. I'm hoping to return to Colombia this year but it's so expensive to get there from Australia.

And a recent move to the San Antonio metro has been healing, which carries a slow and peaceful vibe. Lots of family values and warm people here. A couple years ago my daughter and I traveled to southern Costa Rica to help with a church construction project. I had no idea what I was walking into. I totally fell in love with the people, country, and culture - essentially for many or all of the reasons you've stated. The people and culture are more relaxed, family and community are really important, there's less pressure to buy stuff and fill your life with things, people tend to be friendlier and much less aggressive and confrontational, and the list goes on...
I'm working on learning Spanish. When we finally get the kids settled, there's a pretty good chance we'll move to CR. I don't hate America - it's my country, I love it, and I owe it a lot. But I love the deep sense of community and family in C.R.
    And... I LOVE to walk.
    Good luck.
    Cheers, mate!
