    A couple nights ago I went out on a recovery with a friend of mine who owns a towing company and does a lot of off-road recovery. We took his 6x6 military wrecker up 3 miles past winter road closure at 9000 foot elevation and 3 feet deep snow to recover a jeep 25 feet down an embankment on its side against a tree that stopped it from landing in a high flowing creek. Anyway that big military wrecker made it look easy just lift that jeep up out swing it onto the road. Then I drove the jeep out following the tracks from the big green rig. Yes we did chain the front tires of the big wrecker and it plowed through like it was nothing. Fun seeing y’all recover that pickup with three rigs there and not a tire chain in site👍

    A couple three winter tips from a New England Yankee:
    1. Keep a bag with at least some warm gloves, knit hats and scarves in the truck.
    2. Put your tie down straps in the truck before leaving the trailer so they won't freeze or be hidden under new fallen snow while you are gone.
    3. Leave your truck and trailer pointing towards the road.

    I’ve been on so many of those roads scaring myself over the years and I really don’t mind the snow but when it has ice under it it’s a whole new ball game, especially when your going down a steep grade . The one thing I learned is don’t use the brakes . Stay warm and thanks for the video.

    • @k1j2f30
      @k1j2f30 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you do need to use your brakes going down a steep and very slick road, put the tranny in neutral before you touch the brakes!! You will slow down and stop much, much better, safer and in control, without the transmission trying to push the vehicle and making the tires slide like on ice skates. Of course, this little trick is only meant for vehicles with automatic trannies.

    • @chb2551
      @chb2551 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As an Alabama Gulf Coast native snow was a 'once in a decade' occurrence, and even then it didn't last long. In the early 1980s I moved to Shreveport, LA for a job. I remember all too well the time that it snowed about 6 inches and paralyzed the city! In the first hour there were over 400 wrecks along the I-20 corridor-- mostly people sliding off the road. The combination of extreme (for the area) weather conditions and a totally unprepared and inexperienced populace was a recipe for disaster!

      Can't imagine they don't have go bags under the seat etc., considering to them they are local, certainly in the mountains, imagine they have some method of contacting the shop or 10 layers of extended family with snowcats and tractors should it come to it, pretty sure it's movie magic, I'd put money on Matt having a jacket under the seat should the convoy break down on a 20 degree night.
      I won't head out in the snow without my bag, half my backpacking gear in the back, improvised shovel, communications that will work. I'm on the east coast and it's usually to explore the winter in the forest in Appalachia. Many would be surprised how remote you can get in the backyard of the capitol. Many parts of Monongahela there's no hope of even analog cell on any network. Still there's a level it doesn't matter where you are and what you're driving, it's possible to get stranded and break stuff, or get blocked by traffic, being able to keep yourself warm with some calories available for a few days is important, for oneself and whoever you might find.

    • @gmukeu

      I agree. Up here in Canada we load the truck from fall to spring with survivor gear and never leave the shop without winter wear. With most companies they will let you go if you are on the road unprepared. There is a liability issue. With family you are not setting a good example. As the grandkids buy vehicles my present to them is a trip to outfit them for winter. It is amazing how many people you help that should not be on the road. Like Paul we start out on the warmer flat lands but you know the Rockies will be snowy,cold and likely to change for the worse so you need all the gear that will get you home .

      I messaged FabRats that they should have a chat to the lads from Patriot Campers while they were at SEMA since they brought their FJ over from Australia for the show. Im sure the lads from Patriot would have been glad to help to source some Oem parts for Paul’s FJ but they don’t read their messages. It might have been good to have a Australian contact and fellow TH-camrs and FJ fanatics in their corner.

    Living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on the shore of Lake Superior.. We get that type of snow all the time.. We received 6-8 inches of that slick wet heavy snow plus sleet and rain as well.. Makes for a snow day from work.. Great day for watching Fab Rats 👍👍

    Hey Paul, we are always prepped up here in SL County to help others who get stuck. My son and I both have Maxtrax and 23 Zero Recovery straps and shovels in our rigs. Not been out into the woods and the deserts lately, but plenty of action in parking lots and side of the road slide offs. Cheers on a cold recovery with your boy Landon. Great memory building times.

    That would have been easy peasy if you had a tow truck with chains on, I like how the customer wanted to go into town to buy snow chains after he got stuck. Message for Landon, always be prepared for anything, especially with a dad like yours, so boots, gloves and knife.

    I worked construction and you never knew when you would have to be outside, sometimes there was no warning. I always used to keep a cold bag in my truck; it would have a pair of rubber boots that could fit over my work boots, a pair of insulated overalls, a big jacket with a hood, extra pair of gloves, a wool hat, and a bunch of those heat packs. It all fit in a standard size duffle bag so it was easy to stow, that bag saved my butt more than I can count.
    You guys did fine and everyone came out ok, it just made me think of it at the end when your kiddo had that "it's so cold it hurts" look on his face. A lot of people don't make it home because of the winter weather, I 'd hate to see you all get hurt while you're helping others. Take care.

    driving in snow is a whole different skillset than driving in sand or mud.. worst thing about snow is it will compact in your treads and when that happens it is like driving with bald tyres thats why normally "Snow" tyres are usually Thin with metal studs to grip the ground under the snow but nice recovery !! i am thinking santa should have brought you some snow chains for the FJ.. :).
