That was emotional for me to listen to him tell the story, the worst part of it is to hear about how everyone just went by and wouldn't help them with two little kids, that's just completely inconceivable to me, even if there's one hell of a storm going I'm still gonna try to stop and help young parents with two little kids on the boat, we're all coming out or going down together where there's kids involved. It's really cool to see this though, I bet they'd long ago accepted that they'd never see the boat again
It is pretty much marine law that if you see someone that needs help on the water you gotta either tow them in or take them off their boat. Help them whatever way you can. I do.
I just hope at least one of those 8 people sees this video and remembers that day.

As a father of three, and a Navy Veteran, I am absolutely disgusted to hear that nobody stopped to help them. I hope every individual on the lake that day comes across this video and has to listen to this poor man tell the story of how he nearly lost his family. Even if the boat can't be towed, you rescue the people. Period. I had to hit pause numerous times because of the emotional impact this had on me. All of you are amazing for bringing this tragedy to a better ending. I love you guys, many could learn from your example. Including myself.

I agree, caring nothing for a fellow human boater with a wife and small child and an infant should disgust and enrage us all. Hopefully, those subhumans have joined the human race as decent/caring people. If not, may karma bite them every chance it gets!
The only reason I can figure why people wouldn’t stop is because they were all inches away from the same situation themselves and whether it’s right or wrong self preservation kicks in.
The only person I would hold any animosity towards is the “captain” of the tour boat. If any boat on Lake Powell that day was equipped to help other it would be that tour boat.
It seems inconceivable that the boating community that day did not come through. It makes zero sense to motor off and leave them on a sinking craft. The human condition is is not easily understood.
It's amazing everyone was able to bring back a piece of history for a total stranger. I think this shows more than ever the kind hearted people of the Fab Rats family and the general goodness people have that is overshadowed by the wickedness of others

As someone who went out in a canoe as a pre-teen to pull people out of a stormy lake, I can’t imagine people, especially a commercial captain, refusing to help a family in obvious distress. Wonderful series and so glad the family is back in touch with their boat.
In my opinion that commercial boat captian should have lost his license.
As a father I felt the emotions of the Dad when he was telling what happened and that he would have sacrificed his own life to save his family, I and I'm sure many father's would do the same. This one hit right in the feels 100% , well done Fab Rats family and friends best episode ever! 💝🤘🤘🤘
Yeah no kidding it was actually hard to watch. Scary and crazy is fine on your own or with a group that knows what they could be in for. But with kids it is a whole different story.

@@SadPuppySoup At no point in the video did they say they were giving them the boat. They said they'd let them decide what to do with it, which makes me think they gave them an option such as paying them for the work they did on the boat.

If this story hadn't been documented, I never would have believed it. A jet boat that sank and sat at the bottom of a lake for 30 years, salvaged after the lake level dropped enough to retrieve it, and then revived with the original motor to power it once again.......absolutely unbelievable! Merlin (you ARE a magician🧙♂) & Fab Rats, great job! It's a Christmas miracle!
uhh.. well it turns out that they didn't use the original motor, they put a different one in it.. so it turns out that this story wasn't quite true. Merlin just admitted it on his page.
I'm sitting in my driveway with my daughter sleeping in the back of the jeep, 12" of snow melting by a dec 30 rainstorm I'm in tears over a recovered boat being fixed up and returned to its owners after 30 years.
You all deserve a million subscribers after this story. I hope my Cummins speed boat doesn't end up at the bottom of a lake..

Amazing how those feelings resurfaced after 30 years. You could feel the trauma as he relayed the story. ( Maritime Law REQUIRES you to lend assistance ). The big grin when he was driving his old boat said it all. It will be interesting to see how this eventually plays out.

The fact he remembers so much detail tells just how traumatic this event was for them, but he made sure they lived to tell the story, you guys did something really good here for this family, it might seem like it's "just a boat" but it's more than that.
You just watched full blown Post Traumatic Stress. That boat triggered it and put him right back in that moment when he thinks he is going to have to die to save his family.
The Fab Rats didn't realize what this was going to do to the family.

Sure, they knew what they were going for. They did not anticipate that it would be a triggering event. Although we don't know what conversations they had in deciding whether to go or not. ]

@@masondegaulle5731 I remember that day clear as a bell, everyone was in bad shape, our boat barely made it back to the ramp and we were passing boats that were already swamped and abandoned, it had to be a struggle for them to even stay close to another boat without smashing into itl
Watching you recover the boat and haul it out of the dirt was all fun and games and sure, we all thought about it sinking but hearing that man recount the day in the storm with his young family and no help thinking they were going to die is a hard to relive with him. I can't imagine his pain from that day.
I gotta agree man... I had a small issue with "blurry screen syndrome" listening to him talk about throwing his child at someone who didn't want to take him. I'm a dad too... that was definitely hard to listen to.
What also got to me in a different way... as a lifelong mariner (I grew up a live-aboard) I simply cannot comprehend why no one would help them. The law of the sea is never leave someone to drown. Even in the middle of the war in the Atlantic Ocean, German commerce raiders would pick up the crews of the ships they sank. There's absolutely no excuse to leave a family to drown on a lake.
I've loved the Fab Rats for a while now, but this series with this boat has touched me very deeply. Thanks folks. Ya done a right proud thing here.
I fully agree with you Sean..I also had a hard time seeing the screen though very blurry eyes. I just had a really hard time trying to understand why no one would stop and try to assist this young family in the midst of the monsoon. I was born, raised and still live in Arizona so I have experienced a lot of life threatening monsoon storms so I know how scary it must have been to this family in 1993. My hat is off to the Fab Rats, Merlin and all those involved in resurrecting this boat. You all are a excellent example of good and caring human beings.
What an amazing and emotional story this is! Just finding the boat and salvaging it 30 years after it had sunk would have been an unbelievable story, but to have the boat actually float and drive was a small miracle. Then to be able to hear the original owners story and to bring them out to see it was just so overwhelming and emotional to watch. Thank you all for sharing this story!
Wow! That was a harrowing experience for that family back in 93! I can't even fathom why no one would stop to help, especially with young kids in the boat. To hear the father say that he was prepared to die that day to save his family, that's what a real man would do.
That was a good little series, good to see. FabRats & Merlin's old school garage work together to make it happen.

@@scottsluggosrule4670 It's just a good rule to help someone in need, but you are NOT obligated by law in most states to offer help. Now if it was an accident scene or if you caused the incident, that puts someone in peril, then yes you are supposed to help.
Most people would stop & offer help, it's the right thing to do.

Bonus trivia: the bridge they went under is the (old) London Bridge.

Having spent 6 years in the Coast Guard & been prevy to sinking & drownings your series & the story that the owners brought about brought me to tears. I think the most unfathomable thing of their story was no one stopped to help.
So a bad situation almost turned deadly. There's an unwritten creed boaters normally share. Never ever leave someone stranded. Aid & assist as much as safely possible. Shame on all that passed, at the time, this young family to possibly all parish.
I loved your story a bunch & have shared the link to lots of my boating buddies & nonboating friends.
Hopefully they took their boat home & will continue the reconditioning if such a treasure.

I have soft spot for anyone from the Coast Guard. You guys rescued my friends (and my brother when he went out to try to rescue them) when they where kids, stuck on a rock in the middle of Lake Champlain, at night in stormy weather. even saved the boat they were in.
Part of me got angry. Spent a decade fishing AK and we drop everything and anything to assist somebody in distress.
I never boated a lot but I did grow up on Erie and always knew if you were in trouble someone would help if they could. Boats passing them by just floored me.
Not just creed sir, as you know it's law. For that commercial skipper to refuse assistance is as criminal as it is unfathomable.
Look at the look on his face when he turned it over and all those memories of driving it came flooding back. What an amazing story, I'm glad you were able to give him closure! You can tell this was his pride and joy

Ok, it took me an hour to watch this video even though it's only 25 mins long. Between my crying like a baby and knowing what it's like to be stranded on a sinking boat I reached the end. I grew up on the Norfolk Broads, and always understood that if you see a boat in trouble, you help out. it was so disheartening to hear that so many people just passed on by when they were in trouble that day.
Hats off to you for restoring their pride and joy!

I realize my comment is probably negatively biased, but I chalk that up to where they were, California. I've been on rivers, creeks, and lakes all my life and have never seen or heard of an instance where someone in distress didn't receive help. My own brother, mom, and step-dad were thrown from a boat once and had assistance from the first passerby that saw them.
This truly is one of the best stories on the net! It was fun to see you guys repair it and watching Brian relive that day brought a tear to my eye! Shame on all those people who went by them on the lake in '93 and didn't stop to render aid. I'm gonna buy a flare gun for my boat. If I get into trouble and no one stops, flares will be launched at them!!
The early-1990s powersports market wasn't saturated with oversized, overpowered watercraft the way it is now. Everyone else fleeing for shore in four-foot swells with driving wind and rain at their back, was in the same situation: taking on water, barely able to drive against the conditions, and praying furiously that the next big splash didn't go down the carburetor. One light craft pulling next to another in that scenario just means the next big swell can stack the two boats. You get two smashed craft and twice as many dead people.

I am pleased that they were re-united with their boat and willing to share the memory of the day they lost it. As a seafarer I am disgusted that no-one was willing to help until they were forced to, it is actually a crime to not render assistance to others in distress on the water.
If that boat was in salt water it would have been unrecognizable but a cast iron engine in deep fresh water was preserved.
At this point, I don't know if he would be better fixing the boat up, or letting it go, but hearing their story of their frightening experience that day really hit me in the feelings. Thanks to all of you for cleaning up the lake, doing the work, doing the research, and sharing a real world story with us all. And somebody better put a Valvoline sticker on that boat right away (ha ha)

@@edc6333 Ed, thanks. I went and watched the video over and caught that part at the end. I felt bad for both sides, the family for their horrifying experience, and for Merlin and Fab Rats for the somber reception on the boat reveal.

I couldn't help but tear up listening to him talk about getting caught in that storm and how no one would stop and help as he was trying to keep his family alive. I was in a kayak about three years ago, on a lake in Colorado on a photography expedition. I'd crossed the two mile wide lake, taken some still photos and some drone shots and as it was getting late in the afternoon, I decided to head back across the lake. There were a couple other boats on the lake, fishing. When I was halfway across the lake, I heard thunder behind me. There was a storm building, coming over the mountain behind me. Having spent a considerable amount of time in the Rockies, i knew how fast storms can form out of nowhere and become deadly. Being a mile from the nearest shoreline, I started rowing as fast as I could and within five minutes the wind and waves kicked up, and waves were blowing over my head. The boats on the lake took off at full throttle with one of them passing by me less than a tenth of a mile away while I tried waving them down. They never even slowed down. It took everything I had in me to keep that boat pointed in the direction the wind was going in order to keep the wind and waves from blowing me over. When I finally crashed into the rocks on the back side of the lake, the skin was coming off my hands from the oar. My 40 plus years of sailing experience is the only reason I'm still alive.
If you're on the water and the weather turns bad, make sure you don't leave anyone behind!!
That wasn't just another project, Paul and Michelle, that was giving back. Real generosity. Helping others come full circle to get their closure. You were brought there (the two of you, Ben, Papa Darr, Merlin, Hunter, and anyone else involved) to do what no one else could have done. Good on ya all! Mission accomplished. Give a thanks.

As a Utah boat owner and someone that frequents Lake Powell, I have experienced bad weather situations with my family that were really scary, but can't even imagine the stress they went through and no one offering to help as the boat was sinking. I can tell it was a very bittersweet moment for the family to dredge up all the bad memories, but also know there are great people out there that truly do care. Hats off to the Fab Rat and Merlin garage teams!
I'm a Dad with young children and we love boating... I can't imagine being in danger in a storm and no one being willing to help. That's heartbreaking to say the least. What an incredible series this has been!

my family went through the lake powell monsoons back in the day we would head to shore and tie up to ride it out but we weren't near wahweap that would be nuts i imagine every little boat was scared to stop

The owners of that boat seemed like some cool people but I can't imagine what it was like the day it sank, I can't even fathom the fact that no one would stop to help them. Awesome to see the boat on the water though, it's pretty cool that after all that it can still be used and enjoyed!

No way in hell I wouldn’t have stopped to help it’s as simple as towing them to the ramp there is zero excuse for leaving a family with babies out on the rough waters like that.
As a former boat owner, I can easily condemn people for not stopping and helping. Helping people out is just part of being a boat owner. It may not be a written rule, but it is certainly part of the culture where I live. I have both helped people and been helped by people while on the water.
It’s the law of the land in Canada 🇨🇦 to stop and help anyone in distress on our waterways.

This series was the Christmas present I did not even know I needed. This was awesome even for Fab Rats which is normally awesome. You can see how emotional that trauma of sinking was even 0 years later. The owners wearing a Nine Line shirt and a Coffee shirt listening to Van Halen tells me I could really hang with them!

Can I give this more than 1 thumbs up? What a great ending to the story. Obviously emotional, but it was probably good for them to get that out. Dad is a hero for the way he saved his family. All those boaters that passed by....I hope you see this.
Both Jean and I honestly thought that the build of the "Golden Nugget" for Ed by Matt and Paul and the Fab Rats Family was the "Pinnacle" of TH-cam Viewing. Well, Boy were we WRONG! The combined efforts of Merlin and Paul along with the efforts of Ben and Michelle with the rest of the Fab Rats Crew have taken this recovery and build to a Whole New Level! Having been a "Waterman" all of my life, You don't realize how small you feel when you are on the water, and "Mother Nature" rears its ugly head. My wife Jean and I were "Snot Crying" by the time this vid was over. Hearing the owner's story of that fateful day 30 years ago, brought back memories of my childhood with my own father giving up his life vest for me to wear when things got "REAL" while on the Atlantic Ocean, over 50 years ago. My dad "Pulled a Rabbit Out of His Hat" and we made it back to the Marina that day, but it was a close one! It is refreshing to know that there is a new generation of men and women that live their lives with honor and dignity. Thank you Fab Rats, for this "Christmas Miracle"! Earl and Jean Harrell.

An intelligent little rodent comes along maybe not a chef as in rattatoulley 👈 not sure the spelling but 2 shops connected and took on a project that connected a span of 30 plus years. Great people helping great people. Its not about money , its not about profit or the bottom line. Its about learning , helping and being there for others. The only way man will survive. ✌

I am sad about people not helping. It show exactly how people can be in such dire need of help and outsiders feeling safe in their bubble just don't see how much danger there truly is.

I'm trying to think of something to say that would express how heartwarming that story has been to watch but, I realize that I just simply don;t have the words to say it properly. I would be so proud to call the people who helped in this effort my friends. You folks set a wonderful example of how we all should be treating people each and every day.
WOW, what an amazing almost unbelievable story. All you guys show us what being a good neighbor and good person really means. It's all about the "golden rule" and living it out. I think the fact that their son remembered at least one of those toys, absolutely incredible. At 18 months of age, he may not have been totally aware of what was going on, but he would have seen the emotions of his parents and that etched some of those memories in his mind. So glad someone upstairs was looking out for them that day, or this video would have had a much different outcome.
Such a crock. If "someone upstairs" was watching out, then why did "someone upstairs" allow the storm to happen? Why did he not guide the others to help them? Foh. These people survived because they got themselves to safety.

Wow, who would have thought the story behind the day the boat sank and all the emotions the owners went through that day, then watch them relive the story all over again. Very Emotional !! Wow, I was so moved by the story, and stunned about the fact that no one would help out this family in what must have been the worst of nightmares that parents to small kids could ever face.

Jesus christ. As a father, my heart broke listening to that story. To imagine, facing losing your whole family and no one stops to help. The helplessness. Cant imagine being in that position. Puts tears in my eyes. Most sobering FabRats episode ever. You guys are amazing.
As a father myself and a boater for over 30years, I ALWAYS stop to even ask, are you ok? You never know when that day comes, you'll be the one asking. No one gets left behind
That was beyond emotional. And the story including boats that passed them by while they were in danger made it even more emotional. If I was the owner, I am not sure if I could take it back knowing what happened on it last trip 30 years ago. 1 bad memory can wipe out all of the great memories they had with the boat. Guess we will find out. I am just amazed that after so much time on the lake bottom, the boat still floats and the engine, with just a basic cleaning, still runs and sounds good. Merlin, Ben, Paul and his family are definitely good people.
Certainly bought a tear to my eye with this story. Being a former First Responder I can relate to the story. I have seen these situations go really bad. The recovery of the boat, the tears from the gentleman retelling the story shows how bad it really was, the near tragedy of the whole sinking. The hand over. Everyone who had a hand in this story should be commended for taking the time to do this for this family. Bit shocked by how people just left them to deal with it though.
What a story. As a boater you ALWAYS try and save others during a time when a boat is sinking. What non-sense that other boaters would not stop and help. I was caught several times on Havasu when storms came thru. Beached several boats and waited for the gully washers to come. He also had a lowered C/10 that matched the boat. That was also the rage back in the day. Lake Havasu in Late December or early January is cold. People do not realize that the "Desert" gets cold. Brings back all kinds of memories for me when you went under the London Bridge. If you look at the blocks on the bridge they are numbered. It is how they put the bridge together when it got to the final destination of Lake Havasu. Great video! Thanks again!!
Hats off everyone that made this possible for this family. We had no idea the emotional story that lead to this boat sinking. This reunion obviously stirred up some memories that laid on the bottom of Lake Powell since 94 not only for them but all the viewers as well. Thanks for sharing with us this journey. Iv had five boats in my life and a few times the engine had stopped. and the amount of people had stopped to help was on believable. the people who just drove past should be ashamed of their self's I was almost crying myself listening to them telling the story. and gog bless you guys for the lovely thing you did for the family. putting the boat back in the water. What a heart-wrenching story. Hard to believe that so many boats went by with nobody stopping to help. I’ve seen the waves kick up on Lake Powell during a summer storm and it can get very scary, particularly in a jet boat with so little freeboard. Well, I hope that the owners take the boat and create some new happier memories in it. Great story and kudos to Merlin’s crew and the Fab Rats for getting the boat back on the water where it belongs.

As someone who has had his boat sunk in a traumatizing way and lost member of my family in the incident this was very emotional but satisfying to see you bring back this guys prized possession of a boat, I am happy to hear their family all made it out safe and ended up getting their boat back after 30 years. this day will be as unforgettable as the day his boat sank but for a much better reason. thank you for what you did here, truly amazing people to do this.

I played tennis tournaments at the club right next to the bridge back in 1979-80 while on a college team. Everything was so new & undeveloped back then. Dislocated my shoulder skiing behind a jet boat just like that. Though I preferred V-Drives. Grew up on the Colorado River. Became a SAR diver. Been there. Done that. What a heartwarming story. So glad heroic Dad stepped up & kept his wits about him. Mindset: Prepare yourself to keep your head in a chaotic, dangerous environment. Panic is your enemy. It's what kills most, not the incident itself. Great gesture/job gang! Happy Safe New Year!

The thought of restoring this boat so you can give back to the owners comes from the kindness of all your hearts! The bitterness I would have felt toward all those who wouldn't stop to help would have been strong enough to put me off boating for a while. So, after this rock bottom display of people at their most assholic, to meet Paul and the crew, who have recovered and restored this thing, just to return it gratis to this quiet man, I hope humanity got a measure of redemption in his eyes. One of the best things I've seen on youtube.

That was the most emotional youtube video I've watched. Y'all are so genuine people. That was so hard for the owner to tell that story and I do think a part of him didn't want to see it again. It would have brought up some terrible memories that he'd rather leave in the past. So glad all survived.
