Ken I’ve been reading your reviews for years. You rock! Well! 😂 I’m going to pick up an R5 today, I couldn’t be more excited. Thanks for the tutorial and the written review my friend!!!
just got a R5 after using a rebel t6 for the last seven years, the difference is insane and terrifying! glad there’s videos like these to help figure everything out
I’m getting back into photography this month! I used to read your reviews when I was into photography in high school back 10 years ago, you were always the best!
As usual, hugely informative and helpful stuff, Ken. As I type this comment, my R5 is out for delivery to me. I had considered the R5 Mk II, but since I shoot no video at all, based on my research the R5 is going to be more than sufficient for my needs. Really looking forward to this, and hoping to use my 200-800 to get some shots of the moon tonight and tomorrow!
Hi Ken, quick question, there seems to be several different pd chargers available so is there a preferred wattage to buy? Could I just use the one that came with my MacBook laptop?
I'd use an 18W or 20W and you should have more than enough to charge the little battery as fast as it can. Otherwise I haven't experimented; If I need a fast charge I carry a second battery, so I don't care how fast it charges overnight. Wish I could be more helpful, but with the Canon EOS R5's 16 WH (watt-hour) battery a 20W charger could have enough power to charge it in an hour - if the camera could handle it. In other words, 18W ought to be at least as much as it can handle.
@@KenRockwellTV Awesome thanks! I do have a 2nd battery for my R5, but you peaked my interest with this additional option. Turns out my MacBook charger is 87w ,so the risk of blowing up the R5 made me do further research. The Canon PD adapter is rated for 5v/15w and 9v/27w so like you mentioned the 18w non canon Amazon option is perfect. Love your channel!!
Hi Ken, a question: I am trying to find out what a circle means in the middle of my R5 viewfinder? Do you have a clou or answer? Greetings Martin Mooij Alkmaar the Netherlands
you briefly mentioned choosing the rbg over the brightness channel but i didnt quite undertand the reasoning behind that. Care to give a pleb a simple run down of why it's better?
I wonder if they leave the shutter open because the shutter mechanism is very delicate. Touching the sensor is bad but touching the shutter could be catastrophic.
No! Works awesome. Canons EF lenses have always been 100% electronic since the 1980s (the worlds first), so everything is perfectly compatible. Mount size is especially irrelevant because the mount is so close to the sensor in Mirrorless; they’re no “tunnel”!as their was with DSLRs. Thanks!
Thanks for this video, Ken. Great way to get started with the R5. The 50mm 1.0 is a bit pricey, so I am looking at the 50mm 1.2 L, but would you go for the RF? Or is the $1k less EF version sufficient?
The RF 50/1.2 is by far the best performer. See my review at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/50mm-f12.htm The f/1 is a classic I bring out just to show what Canon has done. See the 50/1.2 at
At least these videos for the EOS R system. No other full frame comes close. See the comparison at www.kenrockwell.com/tech/comparisons/nikon-vs-canon-vs-sony-full-frame.htm
Yes. See it’s review www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/50mm-f1.htm it’s a special lens for special people; for most uses the RF 50/1.2 is a much better performer for half the price www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/50mm-f12.htm
i was trying to figure out how to revert everything to auto in the FV mode and I am glad that I watched your video. Voila, trash button, problem solved, Thanks, Ken~
Kenny, great tutorial. As someone who is changing over from Sony because of their lame touch screens and menus, is there a good start to learn how to use all the advanced features of this particular camera. I am expecting it from B&H soon hopefully!
Just read the manual and keep playing. See of course www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r5.htm#usage and the guides for other models may have some applicable tips, like www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/eos-rp-users-guide.htm those show how to jockey the camera; for how to take great pictures see www.kenrockwell.com/tech.htm thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV thank you Ken. I have always loved your stuff. I always thought of you as the Nikon guy (*I know Matt was another too), so I was surprised by how much you love the Canon. I am awaiting mine, and cannot wait!!! Especially after your video!!!Thank you Ken.

Do you have any video recording experience with this lens and if what are your thoughts? Thanks!
I only shoot still on my R5. For video I rent Panavison or Arri - or hand held I use my iPhone. Ever tried the stabilization on iPhone? You won’t see it while shooting, but on playback it looks like my walking shots were on a dolly. Thanks!
I think you did not give correct battery info. Shutter speeds are reduced depending on which canon battery version and almost certainly off brand batteries.
What? Shutter speeds don’t care what battery is used. I don’t think frame rates care either; I used a third party Watson battery most of the time. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV of course you are correct! I meant frame rates are affected by which version of the battery is used. Now I have to find which of the 20 reviews I saw this tested…
Nikon’s been behind since the 1990s. Eventually it’s time to move forward. I went to Canon in 2013. While I still have Nikon, I only use it for nostalgic purposss. Thanks!
Not so sure you’re right if your comparing Nikon to Canon. Canon dynamic range in their sensor wasn’t so good until now that they’ve released this camera. If you’re comparing Nikon to Sony than you’re partially right. Sony have upped their game and became a force. Still not happy with their ergonomics or user friendliness though. It’s hard for a lot of us that have invested in good Nikon glass to just switch Ken. The latest Z series isn’t that far behind so there is hope in the stills department. That’s my main concern. Stills photography. Hoping the next generation of Z6 and Z7 get a bit more refined and practical with dual slots as they’ve done with the Z5.
4:15 What? It has 45 Megapixel so it could be 5bit and it would look great??? No thats not how it works... 5 bit would mean just 32 different shades of color per channel (RGB). It would look like a C64 game. :D
Nope: because of all the pixels, by the time it’s displayed you have the equivalent of dithering which allows subtle gradations. If you had only 640x480 that’s one thing, but at 45mp it’s no big deal. I’ve done this for a living and designed gear since the 1980s, and I’ve been in the lab where we disconnected the least significant bits and yes, even down at five bits per color channel it still looks fine. I’ve simulated it on photoshop, too. What happens is that the naturally occurring noise dithers the actual result, and with so many more data pixels than displayed pixels, it actually works. Sorry if it takes a PhD to understand; there’s more to explain than time for it here. Thanks for your skepticism!
Just not a fan of the new canon stuff… the electronics are good, but the quality is and UI is down heavily from previous generations despite having the same or higher price tag…

Program the M-FN button to immediately switch between stills and video.
As you prefer; mine gets me to crop modes. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV Please explain, Ken. Why shoot crop mode vs cropping in post?
@@djack41Because he prefers to get the picture he wants directly in camera, cropping included.
When you use the EF to RF adapter is it basically an extension tube and precludes your ability to focus to infinity?
No, simply compensates for the fact that mirrorless cameras have their sensors much closer to the lens mount. Works GREAT!
