I bought the RP with the 35 RF and I LOVE it. Super versatile, compact, lightweight, reliable AF and great image quality. I think the RP is super underrated and has a excellent value. Even if I have 2x R5 with great RF lenses for weddings/events, I easily prefer the RP for personal use (vacation, family, hobby)!
Man I remember reading your reviews in high school, when I got my original rebel camera. Now I just celebrated my birthday and turned 30... time goes by so fast, super grateful you’re still here talking about your passions and loving it! This was one of my favourite cameras to feel out in Best Buy, maybe illl get one one day, still playing with my eos m and magic lantern raw video but on the other hand it’s a great little camera with that 22mm f2
Thank you for this review. I went to both Sony and Canon stores yesterday. Played around with both cameras. The canon RP is a lot lighter than the A7III. Feels a lot more comfortable to hold, the menus are more intuitive. And I have to say that the EVF and the LCD are super clear. I just got sold my Panasonic G7, so compared to that camera, the canon is on a whole different level.
Exactly. RP is a better camera for less, just be sure to get yours online and never at retail to ensure you’re not buying something that everyone else had their hands on. www.kenrockwell.com/links.htm#stores
I’m glad that I’m not the only one singing this cameras praises, it is awesome and takes superb photos and like you say can the Canon colours are very hard to beat and make it all so easy thanks for the review.
Thanks for the review and bringing back the joy of photography in me. Never thought a 36k subs channel and your website would enlighten me better than any other place on the internet. I myself fell into the bottom level of photographer (according to your blog), wasting money for cameras every years buying every new Sony cameras to do lab test images then put in on shelf top. I was so brainwashed by the web into thinking canon is inferior in term of video spec (which I never shoot video) and noise at ISO I never used. I tried Fuji cameras but their film simulation wasn't my taste and I could just replicate it with just a click in Lightroom. I took a break from photography for a year due to mental health and realized photography is much more than reading specsheets and watching youtube videos, in fact most of the images Im proud of was taken with my phone during these hard time. Last week I found your EOS RP review page and tried out this amazing camera. Everything feel right the first time I hold this camera in my hand, the color is miles ahead compared to other things I've used. Thanks again for the godly information on your website. Stay safe and keep up the good work!
I bought my first serious camera in 1983, a Contax 137 MA with a 50mm and a 35mm Zeiss lenses from B&H. I still have the lenses and they are awesome but the body died because it's electronic and I got it damp on a trip to northern Vancouver Island. Keep up the great work! I justt sent a $5.00 donation to Ken.
I’m so greatful for your reviews and your channel. I’ve purchased a Canon RP, sold it and bought it back. I couldn’t be happier. RF 24-105 4-7.1 and 50 1.8 are great too.
Thanks so much for the review Ken; I have been following your site and reviews since the Nikon D50 era in 2005 (a camera which I used & loved for many years.) I have never had a single regret on any of your reccomendations and I'm a new Canon EOS RP owner: I love it!
Thank you Ken. The best review I have seen of the RP. Sensible and a reality check. You have also saved me a lot of money lol Buying the RP which will suit my amature needs and more. I wish you well
I dont know if other people are like this, but when i spend too much on a camera, it takes away some of the joy using it because of the guilt lol. But when you can get just as good results with "budget gear" it ADDS even more joy. Idk what i'm saying.
I ordered mine yesterday from Canon website. I’ve been looking for another camera to pair with my 5D iii. I like to hike and take pictures but don’t feel like dragging my bag with me. I love having my 24-105 L/F4 with me, but always wish I had one of my primes as well. After hours of research it became very clear that the RP was a no brainer. I too, had no idea you had a TH-cam channel and have visited your site numerous times over the years. Thanks for confirming my decision.
Hi Ken. Love the way you do reviews. Not flashy, just to the point with well sustended arguments. Canon will own you a new customer because I'm going to get this Canon RP in the coming days. Thanks for your great job!
Whoa! Forgot about Ken Rockwell (have to use both names)! Man, for the better part of a decade I never bought a piece of gear without checking to see what you thought about it first. Glad I stumbled across your channel. The OG of gear reviews 👍🏼
Your video is simply the best one I have viewed on u-tube. To be perfectly honest, you have convinced this amateur hobbyist to get this Canon RP. Thank you.
The RP is fun to shoot with! I also love changing focus on the touch screen when looking through the EVF (The Nikon D5600, D5500, Z50 have this too). I also appreciate the touch to focus, which initiates tracking and the tracking does a great job too. In other words, it works and it is intuitive. Also, don't listen to the negativity around the RF 24-240 lens. It is sharp, AF is fast and silent and with lens profiles the CA/V/Other issues are non-existent. I mean how many other full frame 10x zoom lens exist that are this good? It might be the best FF 10x zoom ever made.
Great review Ken. My budget isn't large, so I'm planning on buying one of these at the end of 2022. A good, solid full frame DSLR is all I need - bells and whistles are great if you're a pro and need them, but I'm not so this will be awesome.
Just Purchased this camera 2 days ago and will be here tomorrow, There for a while thought I made a mistake for buying the RP due to the videos I Have been watching, But most bashing video, I do not shoot video just love Macro and think this camera will do a good job on macro praying anyway, Your video made me feel a little better about my purchase and will find out tomorrow how much I love it, Before this, I started with the Canon 20d and moved up to 7D about 3 years ago have never owned a full-frame. Subscribed and liked Thanks.
I love the RP. There’s never any risk when you use my favorite stores to get yours ( www.kenrockwell.com/links.htm#stores ) because if you don’t love it, just send it back. I love it. I use my iPhone for all video, never interchangable lens cameras. Thanks!
I love my RP, my first (owned) camera (did borrow my friend's T3i so the difference in image quality is significant)... got myself a 40mm f2.8, 50mm f1.4 and 28-75mm f2.8 lenses, soon a 70-300mm IS so excited
Sir , you are a legend. One of the reasons I picked up the camera and stepped into serious photography is you. I was thinking to move to mirrorless and I am a canon user. I don’t know why but canon had more appeal to it. But then I was planning to move to Sony system which works well in conjunction with canon lenses, after watching this video I think I am gonna stay in the canon family. Wish you good health and keep inspiring us.
I have not even finished watching the video and already clicked like, subscribed, and absolutely love the style of the video. The commentary are not only precise and accurate but damn funny. Love it
This camera is so underrated it’s kind of ridiculous. I was looking for a second body to pair with my Mark IV for events, weddings and portrait shoots. And there were 5D Mark III’s in the $6-700 range with over 100,000 on the shutter on eBay. Then I saw an RP for $750 with 2 extra batteries and less than 6000 shutter, and was like “Is this camera that bad that it’s in the same price point as a 10 year old DSLR with a hundred thousand clicks under its belt?” So I picked it up along with the RF 85 F2 as I’ve been looking for an 85 and figured I’d start my RF glass collection. I’m impressed. I mean, the ease of customization and weight are just incredible. And all my images have looked sharp as well. I’d definitely prefer two card slots and no exposed sensor, and I’m sure the dynamic range isn’t quite as good as my Mark IV, but for a second camera that’s super light for events that is full frame and cost me $750 practically new? I can live with that.
Wow you are a legend!! I am glad i found you here!! I have trusted and shared your no BS viewpoint as a PHOTOGRAPHER on camera gear for many many years!!! Pre digital cameras hehe.
Hello Ken, what a timely video. I just pulled the trigger on an RP and EF-RF adapter today. I remember when I decided it was time to try digital and leave the film realm in 2006 I found your review on the D40 Nikon. Bought that and still have it. Now many Nikon and Canon DSLR bodies later time to try mirrorless. I still have a 300mm F4 IS L and 28-105 USM II. Both a little long in the tooth but good glass anyway in my opinion. I will probably add some RF glass in the future. Look forward to more no nonsense video's from you.
EF 50/1.0 is more of a show lens from film days than a shooting lens today. Full review: www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/50mm-f1.htm get the RF 50/1.2 for actual shooting.
Just ordered with your link Ken. Got an email from Adorama with the new $999 kit price today. Ordered a Tamron 75-300 to try with a EF adapter. This review solidified my decision.
Ouch! I’m no fan of Tamron or sigma. Optics can be ok but my worry is potential lack of compatibility or repair ability after the warranty expires. I’d not buy off brands form Mirrorless; get a kit with the 24-240 is what I’d do. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV Interesting! Ended up not getting the Tamron but a Canon 75-300 EF with the EF to R adapter. Canon discontinued the 24-240. Canon does have a refurb kit with the 24-240 available at the moment.
The praise for the RP is justified - I owned it for over a year but switched to the R6 recently. 2 Reasons: Recovering shadows from the RP Raw images didn't work great. The dynamic range is somewhat limited, even at ISO100. The second is the speed (or lack of it) of the autofocus. We own a dog since July and the RP didn't stand a chance to get sharp images of it running around. But that's about it with the disadvantages. I also really liked focussing with the touchscreen while looking through the EVF. The RP is a little gem if you're not looking for an action- or nightshoot-camera.
Showing off that 50mm f1.0 I see you! I’ve already made some of my best gear purchases based on your reviews and recommendations (85mm f1.2 L, 70-200 f4 IS L, etc..), so it looks like this will be my next upgrade!
Ken Rockwell yes I have to remind myself that modern cameras are to be used, not for collectables and will be obsolete junk within a few years I bought a comprehensive collection of G and E series Nikon lenses- in a few more years the Z series lenses will make them almost worthless
I got an rp in July, and love it. I pair it with the rf 24-105 f4 I got to replace the Ef 24-105 f4 I had with my T7i. I also use my Ef 50 1.8. It’s an awesome little camera at a great price point. I have taken some of my favorite photos ever with the rp. Most reviews will rip on it because they’re coming from a pro perspective, when it should be understood that it is truly an entry level full frame mirrorless camera, not an r5. It should be treated with more understanding, respect, and enthusiasm the way you did.
As an enthusiast thinking about going full frame (from Nikon D7200 and Lumix G85 & GX85), I like what I see here. I can shoot stills with this camera and keep the Lumix cameras for video. I really like mirrorless cameras (the two Lumix cameras have spoiled me) and I have to remind myself to check the meter every time I pick up my Nikon. The backward lens capability is a great selling point too. You're the first reviewer to give it some love, but you use it how I would use it. I'm not frustrated by not being able to shoot in a pitch dark room. I'll turn the light on.
Ken as a hobbyist I would like to try my hands on every genre of photography and also do occasional videos of gym workout, so which one you will suggest a mirrorless like RP or a DSLR like 90D , you can also suggest camera in this range from other brands.
Almost ready to pull the trigger on this and wanted opinion on the lense…24-105mm F/4L vs the variable aperture kit lense. BTW bought my first Nikon DSLR based on your review and looking at this for first full frame mirrorless…
Both 24-105 f/4L and STM are great and take the same pictures 95% of the time. The f/4L costs a lot more and is much heavier, but offers much more light-gathering at 105mm, while the STM is nearly weightless and has extraordinary stabilization. Either is so much better than anything from Nikon or Sony; you can't go wrong. Let your wallet or how much you want to carry be the judge - or whichever comes at a greater discount as a kit today. Be sure to use the links in my description or at my full written review at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/rp.htm for the best service, and here's my famous RP user's guide www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/eos-rp-users-guide.htm Thanks!
Great review Ken. Nice to see you on YT finally. Love your sunny attitude...I'm considering one of these to compliment my 70D. I was going to go for a used 7DMkII but I think full frame and mirrorless is the way to go. I can always get a 1.4 teleconverter to get extra reach on my 400mm 5.6 L
Just bought one, and the RF 50mm 1.8 STM to get started! You're reviews and no bs explanations of what is what is so refreshing. Question for you! You seem to also like the 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM. Think i'm going to grab one, but anything else you prefer or suggest in the $600 - $800 range?
You give the most informative reviews on the inter-web! Straight and to the point. I was looking at the EOS R6 and R. But I agree with your common sense and practical taste regarding the controls of the RP, especially the mode dial. I just wish the sensor had a dust cover. Oh, well. I will purchase the RP and the Control Ring Adapter thru one of your links. You mentioned $899 for the camera body. But which link is that? The ones I clicked on say $999. Thanks for your great reviews, Ken!
Ken do you still recommend the Canon RP in 2022 going into 2023? What lens do you suggest I start with? (Mainly family photos, portraits, vacation). Lastly would you mind attaching links to you suggestions.
you are clearly the best reviewer on line today period! You have almost sold me on a rp! Can you please get your hands on a Panasonic s5 and review it?
Thanks!! You’re the best commenter!!! I probably won’t get the time to look at Panasonic until someone sends me one; I have all I can do to stay afloat in Nikon, LEICA, Canon and now Sony.
Thanks for the review. I was considering upgrading my older D7000 to this one. I liked the price and the features. Should I move forward with this plan or go to another mirrorless model? I keep seeing reviews that bash this. I plan on getting the 24-105 lens because of that range. I'm happy with that range ability.
I love the RP. Dollar for dollar it’s the best value there is. It’s not fast; forget it for action, but for Nature and landscapes I love it. It’s easy to pick fun of by people who can’t take great pictures, but for those of us who know how to use it it’s a great camera.
@@Kreemerz Absolutely, its new and awesome. I like th R7 even more because I love its unique new automatic leveling feature. Full reviews of everything at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/index.htm
Nice review! Even most of the youtubers/ reviewers calls the eos rp crippled or eos RIP...i think its all about the user...canon eos rp is not a bad camera...its not a camera way back from 1800's....most of the reviewers are specs hype thats why they think eos rp is a mistake..its all about the creativity of a user thats all matter
I love your reviews say it as it is in the real world! As an enthusiast wanting to get back into photography properly, I have seen your reviews on the Canon EOS 90D and Canon EOS RP and shortlisted both as a result. I will take photos pretty much of all types of photos, wildlife/animals, nature, landscape and family portraits, plus a bit of video. I will be starting again with my lenses as my old Canon EF lenses are from EOS 600 film camera days. So what do you think, is best way to jump as cost is pretty similar. Perhaps this another video subject for you!
RP better for things that don’t move, and works great with the adapter with every film-era EOS lens. 90d is best for action, sports and fast motion. I use iPhone for video. Thanks!
Hi Ken. You swayed me into buying this camera from a Nikon user. Currently I have the RF 35mm, EF 85mm f1.8 and EF 50mm f1.4. I think that's a good line up. What do you think? Thnks and lots of love from Singapore🇸🇬🇸🇬🇸🇬
Great lineup! You’re so lucky; your two EF lenses were introduced 30 years ago and as you can see, work great on your camera. Never would have been that way with Nikon; Canon’s lenses have been 100% electronic since 1987 so everything just works. Thanks!
Hey Man, ‘been watching your videos on and off for years, they have always informative and opinionated - which is great. I want to know when someone likes a camera and why they like it, and you gave lots of excellent reasons, thanks.
Love my RP. Upgraded from a 6D after the screen died after 150k clicks. The R6m2 is also very nice, but makes much more sense to my bird photographer friend than me. It's fast enough for wildlife if youre not a pro, and if you are, no way you're buying a 600mm f4 and an RP.. this thing plus the 40mm 2.8 or 24-105 f4 on an adaptor is my go to bring everywhere combo. I might upgrade one day, once the R6 or something dips down to the price I paid for this RP, like 600 bucks.
I’d say there are 3 things that are holding this camera back from an instant buy from me. 1. I’d like the shutter window to be down when changing lenses. 2. I wish it used the lp-e6 battery that the r was using. Finally 3. I’d like shooting speeds go be a bit faster than entry level dslr. At least 6.5 FPS across all modes like 6dmkii. Maybe an rp mkii will add these 😢
I sort of do. 1.) start here: www.kenrockwell.com/tech.htm, or come on one of our photo tours where you can get all the one-on-one instruction you like over the course of a few days out shooting. See these at www.kenrockwell.com/workshop.htm; we'll be in the Sierra in a couple of weeks for fall color. Of course you can use the contact page at my website www.kenrockwell.com/contact.htm to ask anything in particular and send samples of the bad photos so I can make intelligent suggestions. Thanks!
Seems like whatever camera he reviews is the best of the bunch and his favorite. In the NIkon mirrorless review, he didn't mention that FTZ adapters were crappy.
I always qualify “best” when I use that word. Everything is usually the best at something. I must have mentioned the crappy FTZ someplace. They really tick me off not working with half my lenses and a huge reason I so prefer the EOS-R system with its 100% compatibility. Thanks!
Hi Ken- can you help me on this? I really value your expertise and honesty. Would this camera be good enough for professional shots of moving kids (toddlers)? I gather this is a great camera for stationary subjects for sure. But how about mobile ones?
Hi Allison! Uh, no. Most Mirrorless cameras are way to slow for kids - and kids only get faster as they grow. You’d want the R5 or R6 or a DSLR. Does this help? I have all my reviews at KenRockwell.com ; TH-cam is but a small selection. Thanks!
Ken Rockwell Very helpful. Would the M6 mark ii do it? Really want the mirrorless route but trying to be budget conscious. Thank you for taking the time to reply!!!
Sounds like you like the Canon RP and the Nikon Z50 --- which is the better buy for $999? Imagining quality appears to be great with both, is the edge to Nikon for dynamic range, or the RP for larger sensor?
I prefer the Canon ecosystem. There are loads of native pro and consumer RF lenses, while with the Z50, all you need are really the two dinky kit lenses. The choice really is your preference for lenses. Thanks!
Mine lasted almost a half year. I bought both the lenses for it. I live in Bangkok where it is hot and humid. I use my camera three or four times a week for street photography. Everything is fine except it will not turn on. The humidity killed it. My Nikon d7000 series cameras did very well in Bangkok. I am looking for a D7200 or D7500 now. You should probably avoid the RP if you use your camera often.
You let me know to late. I can vouch for the Nikon 7000 series standing up to Bangkok conditions. The battery doors fall off and get lost almost immediately though. -- These modern crappy , tiny, mirrorless cameras are disgusting. Whey does everyone pretend they are oK? Thank you for your expert attention. Next time you are in Bangkok I will roll out the red carpet for you. @@KenRockwellTV
Hi Ken, nice to see this review. I'm using the rp now for 16 months and I always love the image quality, but somewhere I sometimes missing the option to bring back the Shadow's. Do you know how the dynamic range is in comparison with example the new r5? Thanks.
All look great to me. What are you saying when you say “bring back shadows?” I shoot only JPG and perfectly clear software lightens the shadows just great if needed. www.kenrockwell.com/tech/athentech/perfectly-clear.htm
I did have the RP for a couple of weeks - I couldn't get good images which is obviously my failure as a photographer. Me and the RP did not gel. I got the M50 as a backup to the 6D and will get the R6 at the end of the year to replace the 6D. The R5 is too rich for my budget
I didn't do enough research before buying my RP and upon delivery i found out it needed a firmware upgrade. Of course with canons great instructions i ended up sending it back to canon repair to do the upgrade and from what i understand the upgrade was about foscus problems.
Hi Vanessa! Why do you feel the need to change cameras? I'd need to know that to make an intelligent suggestion. Barring that, It all depends on how fast your subjects move. Except for the EOS R5, EOS R6 and the Sony A9/II, mirrorless cameras still can't track focus well enough for sports or fast action. It seems like your subjects don't move that fast, or actually will pose for you, so the RP ought to be awesome. Real difference is being able to see how the pictures will look BEFORE you take them, and the ability to set menus and see playback and magnify everything in-finder, and see it all clearly even in direct sunlight. Good news is if you get your RP from any of my links in the description or in my more detailed review at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/rp.htm that you can try it, and just send it back within 30 days for a 100% cash refund if you hate it. Does this help? Thanks!
Ken Rockwell in TH-cam! Amazing! Reading your reviews for a long time! First time listening your voice ahaha! Congrats! I'm an amateur photographer that mainly tries to shoot landscape, some street, architecture, basically, I go out and shoot on my town, or go to a place that I like with car and try to get the most! I have an 1300d (I'm from Portugal!) and I'm leaning on getting an mirrorless and the RP sounds good, but for the other hand I look at the 90D and seems good also! What do you think? Congrats from Portugal and keep going! You're a reference!
Oh fun! Ignore people telling you to use raw files or manual settings; set it to AUTO (that’s the green [A+] setting on the dial) and have FUN! You’ll only need to worry about settings if or when the pictures in AUTO don’t give you what you want. Have fun!!!
@@KenRockwellTV thanks so much for the info! Can I ask you a question? Do you know if I would need a adapter for the rf24-105mm f4-7.1 is stm. I know for the more expensive 24-105 I would. Thanks again! I will be using your other video regarding the camera when it arrives! Thanks again!
All RF lenses work on the RP, no adapter needed. EF lenses need an EF to RF adapter www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/ef-adapters.htm . You don’t mention which kind (EF or RF) is the other 24-105; Canon has made many 24-105 lenses. The best guide to using the RP is at Thanks!
Thank you! I have been giving the RP a long look, to replace my old T5i, but have been concerned by the number of negative or less than enthusiastic reviews out there.
Those negative reviews are from people who don’t shoot for a living and are just repeating published specs. The RP is on sale now; get it from any of the links at my written review at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/rp.htm and you have at least 30 days to return for full cash refund if you don’t love it. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV I haven't had a chance to go through all of your, very extensive, written review and have a quick question. One of the criticisms, of the RP, is its dynamic range for landscapes. Do you have an opinion?
Hello! Thanks for your contributions! I would like to ask you the following: For the same price which camera would you choose: Canon R, Canon RP or Sony A7 III? Thanks. New subscriber here!
All depends what you want to do. I prefer the RP. R is good, too, for faster speed. I don’t like Sony. See www.kenrockwell.com/tech/comparisons/nikon-vs-canon-vs-sony-full-frame.htm thank you.
I just bought an RP. I shoot motorsports mostly, for which I use a 7D2, 5D3 and 5D4, but thought the RP might work as a travel camera alongside or instead of my LX100 MKI. It's too early to talk about my experience and views of the RP, but I like the fact that it's so capable and flexible (on paper at least) yet relatively small and light, especially on days when Arthur Itis is visiting (I'm 65). What I'm hoping for is that Canon will develop a truly lightweight zoom in the 24-105 range, but with a faster aperture at the long end than the RF24-10f f/4-7.1 offers. I would be OK with f/5.6 so long as they can figure out a way to do that without making the thing significantly heavier. I reckon the RP body and a lighter 24-105 f/4.0 - 5.6 would be a great travel combo. I can only wish!
True ORTF stereo accurately reproduces the motion of my head in 3-D space! It’s me moving around as I do it all live; I’m not replacing the audio later from a script like in a movie. This is the original production sound. Thanks!
My website has the definitive review at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/100-500mm.htm. Ultimately TH-cam is just a shorter version of the written review you’ve already read. Most important is I’m waiting for Canon to update R5 & R6 firmware to get the IS to work better.
How good is the RP for wildlife/BIF photography? does the AF tracking work well for small moving birds? or should i spend more on something like the R6 or get the RP and spare the money for glass?
The RP is not about speed. I haven’t tried it for action, while the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 are intended for action, I have tried them, and they work great. If things are moving, go Canon EOS R6.
@@KenRockwellTV could you have a lookie if it's continous tracking on maybe a movong dog is good? it'd be a shame to spend a lot on a cam that might get outclassed very quickly, i do want to fit a canon 800mm f11 ere
You’d have to try it. No worries, just use the stores I do and you have at least 30 days to return it for a 100% refund if you don’t love it. www.kenrockwell.com/links.htm#stores or links in the description.
Great review, Ken! One question. You mention in the "what's bad' part of your review that the RP does not have a closed shutter. Other than that it looks like a good transition camera from dslr to mirrorless for those of us who have used Canon dslrs for years and loved them. I have read that the open sensor is a concern, in terms of dust collecting on it, especially when changing lenses and the sensor is completely exposed to that big hole in the front. Is sensor dust going to be a problem with this camera? Would appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks!
@@sl2608 My answer was about dust. Dust can damage a shutter to the point that it no longer works. It then blocks the sensor. It can also be damaged very easily when you change lenses because it sits at the very front of the housing. Also, even with such a shutter and even if you rarely change lenses, dust gets on the sensor. This is because many lenses, when focusing and zooming, move air into the sensor space like an air pump for bicycles.
@@KenRockwellTV Are you saying the Canon sensors have the dynamic range of Sony sensors? They don't. Of course it is best to get the light setting correct, or take a shot under and over, if in doubt. But there are times when you get but one chance to take an image, and don't have the time to double check before firing-off the shot, like in street photography. I assume Canon RP does have auto-bracketing, which would help in such cases. I looked at this camera, and it feels really nice and solid. For the bucks, it might be the deal -- especially if they run that $999 for camera and lens deal again. I like that Canon camera is made in Japan and the lens in Taiwan. I can see people concerned about recovery of the image in the shadow areas, and that Canon is not noted for dynamic range, but then again Canon has good color, and dual-pixel auto-focus. I will consider this RP camera, the M6 mark II and the Nikon Z50 + adapter deal. I do have some Nikon lenses. I have the Nikon D3500, Olympus and Panasonic cameras. Take care, and have fun shooting! -Loren
Hi Ken. Just wanted to ask you a q. Can canon rf L lense work on RP? Is it worth to buy one or should I upgrade the body first? I really wanted to get into the portrait side of the photography... but wondering if rf L lenses would work on my RP body.Thank you very much.
They all work awesome. Great idea - but pictures won’t be any different from what you have. L just means built tougher and maybe fancier, but just as sharp. www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/l.htm
Hello Mr. Ken, I would like to buy the r5 but I have read and seen a lot of complains about it, I don´t know if that camera is really bad or not but thousands of people from around the word don´t like it ... Finally I found this video regarding th RP and I would like to ask if you recomend me to buy this little RP or if in your experience is really better the R5 or not? Thank you in advance.
Berry different cameras. See the details and comparisons at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/compared.htm Canon EOS R5 is a very high speed high performance camera. RP is a basic camera and super light and inexpensive. If money matters I love the RP, and with an open budget the Canon EOS R5 is my favorite Mirrorless.
What is really great about RP is its af capability is not crippled compared to R, they seem to be in the same ballpark. What's your advice on a walk around lens wider than RF 35mm similar size and weight? Adapting ef 24IS? RF15-35 is too heavy and bulky and expensive.
Ken, have you used any third party lenses with the RF to EF adapter, are there any issues? I have a Tamron 70-200 f2.8 g2, I'm trying to decide weather to go for a DSLR or move over the RP.
Not tried. I rarely If ever recommend third party lenses, especially today. If money matters, I buy used camera-brand lenses at eBay, see www.kenrockwell.com/tech/ebay/index.htm I’ve always bought used when I can. Thanks!
Thanks!
Louis Luzuka same. I’m 28. Been following Ken since i’m 15. He’s the reason I got the Nikon D80 over the d60 back in the day!
The Most Beautiful World I’m curious, why did you pick the d80 over the d60? Was it really that big of a difference?! Worth the upgrade
Bingo! Thanks!
Bingo! Thanks, and don't forget always to take your phone. My iPhone takes some of my best pictures because its always with me!
The RP's getting some love at last, and being appreciated for what it is!
Always loved it. Awesome camera, even better price. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV You just saved me $1000+ bucks. Thanks!
Happy RP’s owner here! 🙋♂️loving every second I use it
Me to!!!!! Thanks!
THANK YOU!!!!
I’m so greatful for your reviews and your channel. I’ve purchased a Canon RP, sold it and bought it back. I couldn’t be happier. RF 24-105 4-7.1 and 50 1.8 are great too.
Ditto. Thanks!
Thanks so much for the review Ken; I have been following your site and reviews since the Nikon D50 era in 2005 (a camera which I used & loved for many years.) I have never had a single regret on any of your reccomendations and I'm a new Canon EOS RP owner: I love it!
And the price is right! Thanks!
Thank you Ken. The best review I have seen of the RP. Sensible and a reality check. You have also saved me a lot of money lol Buying the RP which will suit my amature needs and more. I wish you well
I love this camera! Thanks!
I dont know if other people are like this, but when i spend too much on a camera, it takes away some of the joy using it because of the guilt lol. But when you can get just as good results with "budget gear" it ADDS even more joy. Idk what i'm saying.
The RP is a no brainer: a superior camera at a fraction of the price of everything else. Thanks!
Hey 👋 I know same here 😊 I could have easily bought the R5 but chose the RP instead 🤣 much better value.
Just bought this so happy to hear you like it. Some reviews are not so good.
Some people don’t shoot every day for a living - they just talk about it instead. See www.kenrockwell.com/tech/2-kinds-of-photographers.htm thanks!
Certainly the best review I have seen here in TH-cam. Lots of love from India.
Thank you! Greeting from the U S of A!
I've bought it at day one in 2019 and I'm still in love with it! Yesterday I bought also the 70-200 RF F4, I think they'll be very good together :)
They will be awesome!!!! Thanks!
Thanks, but I only recommend these dealers I’ve used since the 1970s www.kenrockwell.com/links.htm#stores. Enjoy!!!!
I've had my RP for over 3 years and never thought of programming the video record button to MENU. Awesome tip!
Love it!
Hi Ken. Love the way you do reviews. Not flashy, just to the point with well sustended arguments. Canon will own you a new customer because I'm going to get this Canon RP in the coming days. Thanks for your great job!
Great camera at a super price!!! Here’s my user guide www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/eos-rp-users-guide.htm thanks!

OMG I didn't know you had a channel!! I've been reading your reviews faithfully for years 😅
Heh heh!!! Thank you!!!!
Your video is simply the best one I have viewed on u-tube. To be perfectly honest, you have convinced this amateur hobbyist to get this Canon RP. Thank you.
Hope you love it!!!!! Thanks!
Such a sweet gesture of replying to each and every comment 👍
I genuinely appreciate you folks adding comments. Thank you very much.
Here’s the 24-240 review. It’s awesome: www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/24-240mm.htm
@@KenRockwellTV Thanks! Also thanks for noting the location of the 24-240 serial number, with indoor lighting, I couldn't find it! :)
Great review Ken. My budget isn't large, so I'm planning on buying one of these at the end of 2022. A good, solid full frame DSLR is all I need - bells and whistles are great if you're a pro and need them, but I'm not so this will be awesome.
The RP is a steal!!!
Fun! Thanks!
Stick with Canon! Details at www.kenrockwell.com/tech/comparisons/nikon-vs-canon-vs-sony-full-frame.htm
@@KenRockwellTV it’s really impressive analysis on the three brands and thank you again sir, now I have your official blessing to stick with canon. 🙂😀
I have not even finished watching the video and already clicked like, subscribed, and absolutely love the style of the video. The commentary are not only precise and accurate but damn funny. Love it
Thank you! I try to get to the point.
This camera is so underrated it’s kind of ridiculous. I was looking for a second body to pair with my Mark IV for events, weddings and portrait shoots. And there were 5D Mark III’s in the $6-700 range with over 100,000 on the shutter on eBay. Then I saw an RP for $750 with 2 extra batteries and less than 6000 shutter, and was like “Is this camera that bad that it’s in the same price point as a 10 year old DSLR with a hundred thousand clicks under its belt?”
So I picked it up along with the RF 85 F2 as I’ve been looking for an 85 and figured I’d start my RF glass collection.
Exactly! Thanks!
Wow you are a legend!! I am glad i found you here!! I have trusted and shared your no BS viewpoint as a PHOTOGRAPHER on camera gear for many many years!!! Pre digital cameras hehe.
Thank you!!!!!
just discovered your channel thanks to kai w. what a find! perfect. Just the right amount of everything. Clear explanations, and good photos as well!
Did Kai mention me? Actually this channel is just for fun; my real reviews are far more detailed and up to date at KenRockwell.com THANKS to all!
THANKS!! Be sure to see my RP tricks at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/eos-rp-users-guide.htm
Hi Ken great video. Just got the RP. Now I'm going for the Canon 50 1.0. Thanks
50/1.2? World’s top 50mm: www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/50mm-f12.htm thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV I returned the Tamron and bought the Canon 24-240
The praise for the RP is justified - I owned it for over a year but switched to the R6 recently. 2 Reasons: Recovering shadows from the RP Raw images didn't work great. The dynamic range is somewhat limited, even at ISO100. The second is the speed (or lack of it) of the autofocus. We own a dog since July and the RP didn't stand a chance to get sharp images of it running around. But that's about it with the disadvantages. I also really liked focussing with the touchscreen while looking through the EVF. The RP is a little gem if you're not looking for an action- or nightshoot-camera.
Exactly! Thanks!
Showing off that 50mm f1.0 I see you! I’ve already made some of my best gear purchases based on your reviews and recommendations (85mm f1.2 L, 70-200 f4 IS L, etc..), so it looks like this will be my next upgrade!
They’re all great, just different. Thanks!!!
A long awaited video review! This has been really helpful, Thank you so much from Ukraine!
Thank you! I have Ukrainian headphones: www.kenrockwell.com/audio/verum/1.htm
It great to hear you so excited and genuinely enthusiastic about Canon cameras
I still can’t get past all that plastic but it’s all about the images
The price is right! Lots of plastic on R5 and just as much on R6!
Ken Rockwell I’m still living in the past where I expect canon cameras to be built like the old F1n
Ronald Sand they are, if you get a pro camera like the 1DX Mark III www.kenrockwell.com/canon/1dx-mk-iii.htm
Ken Rockwell yes I have to remind myself that modern cameras are to be used, not for collectables and will be obsolete junk within a few years
I bought a comprehensive collection of G and E series Nikon lenses- in a few more years the Z series lenses will make them almost worthless
Just ordered a refurb RP $899 from Canon just now, Thanks Ken!!
The RP is so much more than entry level. It’s the best there is where portability or price or usability are paramount.
Thanks for posting this Ken! There’s so much material on the R5 & R6 that it’s refreshing to hear your views on the RP vs those high end models.
RP rules. R5 and R6 for pros or sports; RP is for what Mirrorless was always supposed to be about. Thanks!
ISO 50,000... I remember pushing Tri-X to ASA 1600 in D-76 and being happy.
Correct. No one should ever need to use ISO 50,000, it looks bad. Thanks!
The RP is pretty god in the dark, especially compared to Nikon.
Thanks!
The RF 24-240 is my favorite Mirrorless lens. Get one and you’re done. Thanks!
Looks like you missed the sale. Links to the best stores are at my full review at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/rp.htm
Ken do you still recommend the Canon RP in 2022 going into 2023? What lens do you suggest I start with? (Mainly family photos, portraits, vacation). Lastly would you mind attaching links to you suggestions.
Yes! I love the 24-240mm. The 24-105 STM is ultralight and inexpensive.
you are clearly the best reviewer on line today period!

Thanks!
This is my birthday gift 😯 & I haven't shot since my pentax me super 😊
Fun, huh? Happy birthday Kate!!!
Thank you for finally somebody telling me that I made an okay purchase.
It’s a great camera, and for the price, unbeatable.
Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV Thanks and stay safe during this pandemic!
Hey Man, ‘been watching your videos on and off for years, they have always informative and opinionated - which is great. I want to know when someone likes a camera and why they like it, and you gave lots of excellent reasons, thanks.
Thanks for noticing!!!
Thanks!
Great video! May I ask if there are any problems or compromises using EF canon lenses with the adapter on this mirrorless? Thanks
Nope! Unlike other brands, Canon EF lenses were completely electronic since the beginning in 1987 thus everything is 100% compatible.
@@KenRockwellTV Thanks! 🙏
Maybe an rp mkii will add these 😢
Sorry, look at the EOS R www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r.htm
Wow! Do you have a camera course? I can’t even get clear photos of my daughter from 4 feet away with my RP 😅 what am I doing wrong??
I sort of do. 1.) start here: www.kenrockwell.com/tech.htm, or come on one of our photo tours where you can get all the one-on-one instruction you like over the course of a few days out shooting.
Thanks!
I can't help but notice you like showing off that 50 f/1.0 lens in your canon reviews lol. Another nice video!
Great review and you have enough lenses to know....wew!
Thanks!
Hmm, never had a problem but I’m halfway across the world. Most cameras are only rated at up to 85% humidity which many places exceed
Thanks!
I didn't do enough research before buying my RP and upon delivery i found out it needed a firmware upgrade. Of course with canons great instructions i ended up sending it back to canon repair to do the upgrade and from what i understand the upgrade was about foscus problems.
I just read your article last night on RP! Is that good for the family, seniors, newborn, travel photography? Or go to 6D Mark II? I have older 6D.
Thanks!
The reason I want to change the camera is tilt screen. I’m short and difficult to take the shot at above.
Great reviews I owned one and love it.
Thanks!!!
Thanks For the great Review.....
Thanks for the great comment!!!
Very nice video, really good. Thanks!
Easy: 90D is for motion and action. RP for things that hold still.
@@KenRockwellTV You rock sir! Thanks very much, i do not shoot much action, so the answer is easy! :)
Just bought an RP. First time getting into photography. Love your energy and input!

@@KenRockwellTV thank you so much! I got the camera today can’t wait to dive in I’ve watched your guide a few times so far! Thanks for the link too!
@@KenRockwellTV th-cam.com/video/-xncgp9of7M/w-d-xo.html This guy shoots for a living.
Very nice review. Appreciate your honestly and awesome personality :)
Thanks! Just saying it like it is.
Hope you love it. The RP doesn’t track focus as fast as your DSLRs. thanks!
What is the secret behind the left-right audio panning in all your videos?
True ORTF stereo accurately reproduces the motion of my head in 3-D space! It’s me moving around as I do it all live; I’m not replacing the audio later from a script like in a movie. This is the original production sound. Thanks!
Hi Ken. When is the rf100500 review coming out on TH-cam?! I've read your website review already and it looks great!
Hi, I’m thinking between this camera and 6d mark II?
Totally different, like men and women. Which is best depends on the job. Thanks!
There is a battery level when you view through the evf
Just a vague icon, not a precise level.
I think my next camera systems will be a Canon mirrorless system. Thanks Ken!
If you want Mirrorless, you want Canon. See also www.kenrockwell.com/tech/comparisons/nikon-vs-canon-vs-sony-full-frame.htm thanks!
I just got mine , so the romance has just beginning .
Only gets better with time. Thanks!
Thanks!
No, not a big problem. Thanks!
BTW: A shutter is more delicate than sensor.
@@avronaut My question was about dust, not durability.
When do you choose to take RP vs X100V, since you have both?
Always prefer RP. X100S is only for people, family and event photos where I need great fill flash and skin tones.
So why is everyone complaining about the dynamic range?
50% of people have under-100 IQs, or simply inexperienced or misled. Many consumers and most youtubers aren’t experts, either. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV thank you very much!
Looks like Palm Springs, that's where I was born 55 years ago.
Close! Thanks!
The OG. Thoughts on EVFs in general for flash photography?
EVFs fine for flash if you want to see immediate playback. I prefer slr for studio strobes and manual focus at full aperture. Thanks!

Easy! RF 24-105 STM is wider and it’s magnificent and inexpensive and small www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/24-105mm-stm.htm
@@KenRockwellTV thank you! Long live the Ken I have been reading your contents for well over a decade. Just knew you have a TH-cam channel too.
You’re the best!!!!!
Thanks!
