The Colour of Spring was Talk Talk's transitional album away from their earlier synth-pop to their masterpieces, Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock. IMHO, some of the finest music ever created.
Those of us who had been into prog in the 70's but still made the leap to "new music" in the 80s tended to like Talk Talk because they were more musically adventurous than a lot of the standard synth acts of that period. That's even evident on their earlier stuff.
Sorry, but that's not correct; Ian Curnow plays the lead synth that sounds like a guitar, and it's Tim Friese-Greene on the organ. Steve Winwood plays on 3 other songs on the album, though 🙂
Love you guys. I mean that when I say that anyone from the 80’s would never describe Talk Talk as not of the time - they were 100% of the 80’s which looked back to Motown across multiple bands and added the synths and current percussion and guitars. Hall and Oates is another prime example but there are dozens if not 100’s of others from this era. Understand why you see verses as awkward but this is what we always loved about T2 and Holis. Then there are songs like Its My Life and Talk Talk (yes there is a song called Talk Talk by T2) were quintessential post-punk 80’s.
Yes, 80s was a LOT of different things, very unlike and divergent. That was the joy of the decade, you could have a great listen across a wide range of musical genres.
I guess also what happens as time is telescoped, for those who look back who weren't around at the time and listening to the sheer breadth and depth of different kinds of music being made, you see the 80s music scene through a specific lens. It gets categorised into pop synth or poodle rock etc. But there was so much more going on. And it's all 80s :)
For what it's worth, Talk Talk is a British band and the Brits spell a lot of words with that extra "u". At some point, Americans simply stopped using it and just went with "or". Canadian English still officially uses the British spelling, but no one bats an eye when the American spelling is employed. It's pretty much interchangeable for anyone outside of government.
Mark Hollis was an amazing musician and I'm sad to say I wasn't more into them in the early 80's, even though I was still a little young. Just wish I would have been able to experience them live. They're Live at Montreux show you can find on here shows how truly great he and the band were.
Sadly these guys have no real appreciation for MARK HOLLIS and his creativity MARK is not boring his music is DIFFERENT he was a very emotional writer and performer and the musicians are SO GOOD. im 77 and only remembered a couple ofTalk Talk songs as i was busy writing and recording my own material. BUT NOW i am so lnto his music i cant get enough.❤😍😘I love music that has meaning.TALK TALK DOES THAT😮😊❤
That's precisely how it was! [re. 8:20 on] If you liked Talk Talk you'd rather be found dead than listen to, for example, Stock Aitken Waterman productions 🤣. I definitely was a musical snob. Nowadays it's all good, nostalgia kicks in.
You're right about this being a little atypical of the 80's. I remember when it came out some Talk Talk fans, and 80s synth-pop fans in general, were disappointed somewhat by how retro and organic it sounded. A lot of people seemed to be expecting 'It's My Life Part 2,' whereas this album has a lot more guitar and piano/organ as opposed to synth. Interesting what you said about the "whispery" vocals. Hadn't thought of it till now, but with that in mind you could almost hear Bryan Ferry doing this song. Some of his post-Roxy Music solo work has a similar vibe.
Loved that you keep getting back to Talk Talk, great reaction! I would love to see a reaction to "Living in Another World" live performance from Montreux 1986 (same show as you reacted to Its My Life), Im sure you would think its fire! Album version (also from Colour of the Spring) is great, but this live performance is just next level, one of my favourite live performances all-time!
My neighbours boy is a 20yr old DJ and says the floor fillers are the British electronica from the late 70’s and through the 80’s. They can’t get enough of it. Todays music sucks…..his words not mine.
I saw Talk Talk multiple times in the late 80s - mid 90s. Their live shows were awesome. Mark Hollis (R.I.P.) was a musical genius. If you get a chance, check out the live version of Give It Up; if you really wanna see Mark "popp'in off".
Here in the deep reaches of the 606, I wound up listening to "Spirit of Eden" and "Laughing Stock" this past summer for the first time. Someone described Mark Hollis' voice as "Pete Townshend on Dramamine." If you think his voice is shaky here, listen to "Laughing Stock" or his only solo album. Also, if you think they didn't care about changing with the times, just try those two albums. Those two albums are considered progenitors of post rock. Mark Hollis didn't give a damn what anyone thought about the last albums--especially their record company.
Greeting guyz!!! Today, I would LOVE to suggest a brand new song entitled "Dissociation", by the French Canadian Death Metal/Classical project named "Disorientation". This is a lyric video* Thank you for your attention and have a nice day ;)
In the eighties this would not have been "hard rock" enough for me. It's not bad . Probably not play list but I would not turn it off either. Nice different sound. Nice job.👍
I love Ty, but you two are different together. Ryan doesn’t know a whole lot about things that Nick does…so it’s interesting to see what you guys come up with together. Still hangin with ya boys!
Going to keep peppering you guys until you check out some some of the newer Bands playing great old sound music. Try The 88 - It’s Not Going To Be Like Before. Just give it a try. Check out the keys. At least give me the high sign you liked it!!!
Just finished my top 10 songs of all time... Hollis and co got TWO in the 10, being Life's What You Make It and Desire. Alas, the likes of which probably won't pass this way again with all the total knobbery abounding these days. Radiohead quite influenced by them, that's saying something.
@@gabrielmcdonnell8699 …….thank you. As long as he is ok. I really enjoy your reactions. The chemistry between you three was special, lots of laughs, opinions and just plain fun. As an old rocker, I enjoy seeing this generation finding all this excellent music. All the best from Canada. I’m in the 506.👍😜🇨🇦
Not familiar with the band. His voice is pretty good but he just does some odd things with it. I really liked the music though. Very soothing. That black square in the middle of the bottom part of the screen is distracting. Your hands and arms keep disappearing behind it. Is it a patch job?
The whole album, "The Colour of Spring", is perhaps the best album of 1986. Talk Talk at their best.
It's definitely in my Top5 of Talk Talk albums! 😁
Yes.
Agree, and probably their very best recorded album, I'd say.
Steve Winwood plays the Hammond.
A fucking masterpiece of an album. Way ahead of their time. Any musician worth his salt has this legendary band in their all time list
The Colour of Spring was Talk Talk's transitional album away from their earlier synth-pop to their masterpieces, Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock. IMHO, some of the finest music ever created.
Such a cool band. I love their sound. They have so many great songs.
That album is a masterpiece. Give it a few more listens. “Time It’s Time” is a perfect outro. They weren’t main stream. We liked that.

Well said - and so true!
By the way, that is Stevie Windwood guesting on the organ. Tim Friese-Greene on the weird synth - works for me!.

"Life's What You Make It" was the hit off this album...plus the video is AMAZINGLY COOL!!!!
I think they've already done this one.

One of the best albums of the 80's and one of my all-time favorites!
Talk Talk is one of my favorite bands of all time. Nothing awkward about his voice to me.
For what it's worth, Talk Talk is a British band and the Brits spell a lot of words with that extra "u". At some point, Americans simply stopped using it and just went with "or". Yes, it's just British English as opposed to American English.
We’re probably the only predominantly English speaking country that doesn’t spell these words the original way.
One of the Great bands - Americans spell things differently. Australians like me Colour, Metre, Autumn (lol....Fall isn;t even close!)
I LOVE THIS ROCK BAND....They are one of my all-time favorite Rock bands.
This is one of the bands I bought anything I could find. Their 12" remixes are incredible. Always good to see them on the channel!

Song still slaps 37 yrs later. “Creepy synth”? I like it. 👌🏾
Loving your Talk Talk reaction videos 🩶

Ooooooo this is going on the Pool Music playlist. Such a groove.... Thanks, Ryan!!!
The real masterpiece is "Tomorrow started". Case closed. Listen to it, you won't regret it.
Agreed 100%!! One of their very best tunes!!
For sure!!!!
This album. All good! I can’t pick a favorite!
Super album❤❤❤❤❤❤

Talk Talk were genius, Mark Hollis was genius (RIP Mark). So much jewel to discover for you ;-)
RIP Mark Hollis

They can’t get enough of it.
Todays music sucks…..his words not mine.
Great song from a fantastic band

You couldn't have seen them in the late 80s/early 90s, as they gave up touring in 1986. Why lie about such a thing?
Ryan needs to hear " It's My Life " by Talk Talk. Essential track covered by No Doubt a few decades later.
they've already done it
As a sidenote, listen to the last concert Talk Talk ever did. Talk Talk - Live in Salamanca (10.09.1986)
Noice.......Ryan is way into it. Very excellent
His "awkwardness" is the defining sound that his fans love
Ryan, your taste in music is impeccable!
Spot on
Do April 4th from this album. Genius. About his wifes birthday. RIP the genius Mark Hollis

It's only the U.S. that spells Colour without the 'u''. Same with Favour, Neighbour, etc...
"Colour" is the British spelling
The original ya mean. 👍
I hope the Brits didn’t take offence. ☺️✌🏽
No one mentions the song, "Talk Talk". It was awesome too.
Years ahead of its time ...If it were a painting it would be a picasso 😊
Greeting guyz!!! Today, I would LOVE to suggest a brand new song entitled "Dissociation", by the French Canadian Death Metal/Classical project named "Disorientation". This is a lyric video* Thank you for your attention and have a nice day ;)
Mark Hollis was/is a gift.
Colour is the British spelling

Steve Winwood on organ. But as for how we saw them in the 80s ,they were alternative/ art pop. They developed post rock.
Going to keep peppering you guys until you check out some some of the newer Bands playing great old sound music. Try The 88 - It’s Not Going To Be Like Before. Just give it a try. Check out the keys. At least give me the high sign you liked it!!!
Voice like a Sax

Sorry guys I have been away for awhile…….where is Ty?
Second question….where exactly, is the 502?
Ty got a new job and moved. 502 is an area code in Kentucky.

English language, English dictionary = Colour, the correct spelling 🙂
hey man! Mark Hollis is one of the greatest songer/writer ever exsist! please understans HolliS way of singing and the lyrics!
Colour is the english way of spelling it. Color the american
It's an 80's album but there isn't a synth on it. Listen to the top 10 any month of 1986: nothing sounds like this.
Not familiar with the band. His voice is pretty good but he just does some odd things with it. I really liked the music though. Very soothing. That black square in the middle of the bottom part of the screen is distracting. Your hands and arms keep disappearing behind it. Is it a patch job?
Yes, lighting issues this past week
