Mark Hollis (RIP) suffered from severe stage fright and had difficulties performing live. So if he had to wear shades, avoid looking towards the audience and sit during instrumentals, so be it. I am just grateful that he was there at all so we can enjoy the music. Cheers!
It was one of the reasons he quit touring with the band in 1991, the other being he wanted to spend more time with his family. He did have a very serious case of stage fright that he was never able to master.
Been a fan since hearing this tune in 1983, never realised it was "stage fright" that caused them to split. I thought it was creative differences and Mark had had enough of corporate influences trying to control the music. The tale of his producer brother dying at the release of "Spirit of Eden '88" and the company releasing "I believe in you" about Marks brothers battle with drugs really doesn't surprise me.
Thanks guys - The percussionists are playing CONGAS (not bongos) - but lots of love for y'all lovin' one of the early 1980's best bands - PLEASE check out GIVE IT UP by TALK TALK LIVE - its ICONIC - trust the peeps that were in University when this band was coming up - Mark Hollis was incredibly sensitive and absolutely masterful with his unique song writing - sadly this beautiful man passed away from cancer in Feb of 2019 at the young age of just 64. He was a family man - he chose to break away from the music industry to devote himself to his family. Hollis lived in Wimbledon, London with his wife Flick (a teacher) and their two sons, before moving to Heathfield, East Sussex where he lived until his death. He was a beautiful soul and he is very much missed by many TALK TALK enthusiasts. Check out the Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock - the last 2 of the 5 iconic TT albums that shunned radio format for creativity and artistic integrity. Love that man. Miss him so much.
So many bands deserve a spot...Talk Talk will be lucky to ever be nominated, but I agree they're worthy. At least as worthy as some of the bands that are in there now.
Man… Mark Hollis was a once in a lifetime genius. I don’t know if it would make for great reactions but I would highly recommend Talk Talk’s last album, Laughing Stock. It’s an amazing instrumental journey from where they started. Anyway, yinz have impeccable taste in music reactions. Love y’all
There are tons of great songs from their debut album, titled Talk Talk. Songs like Talk Talk, Today, Candy, Hate, and pretty much the rest of the album.
Glad you guys are featuring a great band from the 80's. This is a unique song, Mark's voice and the instruments combine for a favorite of mine from 1984. "Life's What You Make It" is also a gem to give a listen to. RIP MARK, going way too soon.
Beautiful choice! the No Doubt version is admirable but since I have been a Talk Talk fan since day one it's not even comparable. Mark Hollis is the most amazing of musicians and voices. I cried for a week when I heard he had passed away. But I don't miss him since I still listen to Talk Talk all the time! It's hard to miss someone who's voice has been part of your life for almost 40 years. I love your reaction guys. I was surprised by it but that makes it even better!!!!
Mark Hollis' voice is like the woodwind section of a symphony. Regarding Mark's presence and behavior in concert tours, he was terrified of speaking in public and hated/loved being lead singer. He was advised by an associate to try the sunglasses---he couldn't see the audience clearly and they couldn't see his eyes, the windows into his soul. Strange really...he loved his music and he is one of the best of the New Wave (1981 to 1986). He was physically fragile, dying from brain cancer in 2019 at age 65. He left a wife, two sons, and a home in Wimbledon, London. And a body of work that continues its rise to fame with each passing year. RIP lovely spirit.
Glad the guy in the middle chose this over No Doubt's awful cover. Gwen can't hold a candle to Mark Hollis's vocals and the No Doubt bass player can't touch Paul Webb.
Talk Talk started as a very good synth band, and the record company had hoped of grooming them to be the next Duran Duran. That wasn't in the band's plans at all, and they evolved over the 5 albums into an extremely experimental project pushing the recording process in completely new directions. Their middle album "The Colour of Spring" is my personal favourite, and probably their most catchy, but they are all good.
I love this song. You guys should have done the studio version because the orchestral movements in this would be a little more accessible than in the live version. I'm so glad you did this though.
This song is about mark regretting signing up to the record label (it's my life don't you forget) the band was with they were trying to mould them into some crap pop band but mark and the band wanted to do their own thing and progress with there music..
New wave is basically what The Americas also call, the British Invasion 2.0. Punk bands from England got tired of playing for their beer tab, cleaned up a bit and BOOM! ❤️ it
I was 19 years old when this song came out. I grew up with this kind of music. I have to say this live version is the best! Why, you ask? Because it's longer! it's excellent.
Wow!! Great call on choosing this live version of this song, guys. I've long been a fan of the studio version, but this live version adds a whole new dimension!!
Real talented musicans, that haunting sound of Mark's voice, the arrangement of the music. A live performance doesn't get any better... I so wished I was in that crowd over there in Montreux... Can somebody invent a time machine please?
This song has aged like a fine vintage. Its far better than the No Doubt cover, at least in my opinion. Classic 80's joint and a staple on my new wave/synth pop playlist.
That 2 note synth motif as well as the synth "pop" on the chorus backbeats are just a sprinkle of 80s music magic and a great example of what made 80s music so special.
This is why we old folk in our mid-60's will ALWAYS love the synth-pop music of the middle-1980's. "It's My Life" is very special to me--almost 40 years later--because it helped me through a four-year battle with Hodgkin's lymphoma (which I obviously won because "it's my life" then, and it's still my life today.) The POWER of this recording lies in its deeply felt BEAUTY, and both those aspects are inseparable. Sometimes I feel as if this miraculous performance does, in fact, tap into the human collective unconsciousness through the voice of Marc Hollis. One cannot deny its appeal across time and distance. It leaves its mark on us all. In the harmonies of Talk-Talk's "Its My Life" people find a harmony within themselves as truth and beauty mesh. A joyous and inspiring song from a man who was known specifically for his "gentle beauty."
WOOOOOW! you said that so beauiful... I belive Mark was with us to channel many many things.... I LOVED HIM FROM THE BEGINNING TILL TODAY deep in my ❤... and I understand now why.... Oyu could really feel what a wonderful person he was.... Just love him❤❤❤ always and forever
I found out about Talk Talk very late, but way before No Doubt. Mark Hollis to me is a genius and a wonderful singer. Well..was. I miss him. Hugs from Sweden.
Talk Talk progressed from a Synth Band to an ethereal jazz/ambient band. Recommendations: What a Shame, Talk Talk (the song), Living in Another World, I Believe in You, Does Caroline Know, I Don't Believe in You, Happiness is Easy, Dum Dum Girl, Pictures of Bernadette
I supported this band in the 80’s @ St Albans Arena with a band called Dance Dance, they were amazing live, they opened there set with there first released song that was called TalkTalk 🎸❤️
That conga interlude was so cool - a real bonus of live music of that era, when musicians would take impromptu sidetracks at live performances, a lot of which was done on the fly, managed all by ear & by eye contact between band members. This is a great example of that. Everyone in the moment, the crowd fully drawn in and silent, no half-present iPhone waving zombies. Great track & reaction. And wow to drummer Lee Harris too - power and precision.
Great reaction video - loved Talk Talk since they broke out in the 80s. My fave still remains Such a Shame arguably their biggest hit. Search for the live version of it at the Montreaux music festival. That is 8 minutes of sonic bliss - lots of freestyle jamming! Guitars, Synths, Piano, Drums! In my opinion one of the greatest live performances by any band; everyone was so tight! Ecstasy to the ears!
I'd never seen this live version before, absolute fire. That percussion breakdown and build up was ridiculous. For some other Talk Talk reaction recommendations: Life's What You Make It - another well known song Happiness is Easy - smooth Inheritance - really chilled out
Acho que deveriam se apresentar sempre em bíblico marck holliea tímido, enigmático e aquele vozeirão ele é o máximo da um toque de mistério qual é a graça música boa cantor diferente nota mil para marck
Great reaction! Good choice to go with the live version from Montreux! The whole concert is just awesome, can really recommend Living in Another World from the same concert!
Mark Hollis was a great song writer. There are several well known music acts that made it to the top of the charts performing songs he either wrote for them or did a cover of one of his songs.
the full Montreux concert video is excellent - really well recorded...... and with a lot of the early tracks from the first 2 LPs and introducing some of those from the trasitional album "the color of spring" . The later albums were so so different from where they started (spirit of eden & laughing stock are almost jazz/contemporary classical)
Thanks for this reaction. Talk Talk produced many more hits you'll like, but if you dig a little deeper than that there are tracks you'll love. 'Living In Another World' and 'Tomorrow Started' for example.
Notice each species of animal has a hieroglyphic lettering of "IT'S MY LIFE" around its mouth, while Mark Hollis, the human, is blocked from talking. Great reaction, fellas. This is one of my all-time favorite songs, and I love both Talk Talk's original and No Doubt's cover. Comparing the studio versions of each, it's really hard to pick which one I love most. On another note, I saw that you reacted to, "Don't Bring Me Down", by ELO about 3 months ago. They're my favorite band, so I'd love to see you react to them some more. Especially since the song you reacted to 3 months ago is not even close to being one of their best. For your next ELO reaction, I suggest doing the studio version of either, "Evil Woman", or, "Livin' Thing". Both were huge hits in the mid-70s!! If one or more of you guys already knows those songs, and you need one just as great but less well-known, then react to the studio version of, "Tightrope". It is the quintessential ELO song!
Is no doubt about it Talk Talk and Mark Hollis were the best! Rip🙏🕊️Mark, you were taken from us way too soon!🙏 you guy’s should listen to more of them! “Life’s what you make it” “such a shame”👌😎👍
All the great 80's bands on stage, wouldn't just perform the song live, but there would always be a bit of improvisation thrown in. That's why 12" versions were always available of single releases at the time.
Mark Hollis R.I.P. - Respectful reaction, gentleman and at those days, Talk Talk meant so much for me...caus their music has always been one step higher than so many others. I remember dancing to this in the clubs in 1986 (yes, this was emo-rock)... and then again in 2003 with No Doubt's cover. ♾ #ViewFromThe502 #ItsMyLife #TalkTalk
as you said this is another level. my favorite song, favorite live performance, makes tears in my eyes (of joy, excitement, sadness, nostalgia) amazing reaction from 3 quality persons. hats down you nailed it. Thank you so much!
Many Hits Talk Talk uses a lot of instruments, and Yes! they do improv on many of their songs, during thier live shows. They will not let you down whatsoever. I remember going to the New Wave Clubs here in Portland Oregon, they were an underground band, that we're not known by anyone in the US unless you were dancing at the new wave Clubs, throughout the country. They would later become a little more popular, but still more in Europe than the US.
I love a lot of British solists and Bands. This was my littlesisters favorite. I love The Housemartins (my favorite is: Caravan of Love - A'Capella) - U shut listen to them. I also like: Blur - favorite is Parklife. Elton John, Sting and Phil Collins is also on the list. I'm was a teen in the 80's. English music and my homelands (Denmark) music was played a lot. It still is.... My favorite with Talk Talk is: Such a shame. Great.
That two tone synth throughout the song replicates the sound of the warning horn on any U.K. passenger train back in the 80’s. You also hear replicated bird noises. A story of a Train trip to see an unrequited love by the sea.
Still can't believe he's gone and I'll never be able to personally witness him perform. Though, I was perfectly content just existing on Earth with him at the same time. If you liked this, listen to something by them that's less poppy; Laughing Stock and Spirit of Eden are both amazing albums.
This blows away No Doubt.
No doubt about that!👌😎👍

Definitely!

I only ever heard the no doubt version. Finally heard this original version and love it more.
The bass line alone is genius
RIP Hollis. Screw no doubt! This is the original right here.
No Doubt knew a great song.

I didn't know it was brain cancer. His last home where he died was in Sussex.
Amazing bass line that no one ever mentions.
Its genius and very tricky to play
Trust me, us bassists know this is one of the best and its not that tricky to play.
The bassline is the heartbeat of this song.
Nice choice for a reaction.
"Life's What You Make It" is a react worthy jam. Mark Hollis was an underrated vocalist in some respects.

Never heard this version (pretty good) but I am partial to the original studio version. It's AWESOME, much better than the No Doubt cover IMO.
Great.
the bass player slays on this my preferred version
That two tone synth throughout the song replicates the sound of the warning horn on any U.K. passenger train back in the 80’s. You also hear replicated bird noises. A story of a Train trip to see an unrequited love by the sea.
Such a shame has an elephantine trumpet to the intro
This song is about how our pets/animals see us, love us and feel neglected by us...!!! Believe it or not x
Love this live version
At first I had no idea who these guys were, but once the song started I'm like, I remember this song.
Righto ,Sandy .When you said that, I figured I had heard it. It's pretty catchy...Glad you enjoyed hearing it again.
I. Like the album version of this song, but this is much better, thank you!
They have five albums, all made without the convenience of modern computers.
Still can't believe he's gone and I'll never be able to personally witness him perform. Though, I was perfectly content just existing on Earth with him at the same time. If you liked this, listen to something by them that's less poppy; Laughing Stock and Spirit of Eden are both amazing albums.
Sublime indeed.
❤️ Great live version
