An absolute masterpiece from a truly amazing band. The bassline being played on piano is pretty unique and iconic, combined with that drumbeat. Mark Hollis had severe stage fright, hence the glasses. What an immense talent, rest in peace!

This was the first I ever heard of Talk Talk. I was completely nailed by the piano which can only be described as 'mesmeric'. It blew the mind of a 13 year old and still does it at 52. RIP Mark and thanks.

I was totally obsessed with this song back when I first heard it. I've been listening to it regularly for 30 years and I don't think I'll ever get bored of it. So many great elements alongside a killer riff. The lyrics read like poetry. Great job on a first listen.
This is actually untypical of their work. They were very much an album/studio band and famously awkward after 86' in terms of not wanting to tour, do any album promotion or even make singles. A groundbreaking band who's influence is very much heard today in bands like Radiohead and Elbow.
Check out 'Living in another World' and' I believe in you' two more great singles.

Me too. It fell off the radar and I forgot about it for years, then dragged back memories of the fantastic video and the piano beat, but I couldn't for the life of me remember who it was, or track it down somehow, for years and years. Then I got randomly assigned a Return to Eden track on TH-cam, bought the album, and later wondered "what else have they done before this?" To my astonishment, it was the same band! Talk about a wild progression of styles from this to Eden to Laughing Stock.

This song is simply extraordinary. I can't quite believe we've lost *Mark Hollis* - an incredible loss to the music industry.
Sadly only the chap in the middle really seemed to grasp the brilliance of what he was listening to.
The other two look rather baffled in the face of something they didn't quite understand...

@@ajmmusic3961 I find that with so many reactors - particularly when watching female musicians or vocalists - all you get is _"She's cute"_ or something equally asinine. Or they watch a compositional masterpiece and say _"Yeah cool"_ as if that's the sum total of their music appreciation vocabulary.
They certainly don't have to like everything they react to, but I want reactors who are really *into the music,* rather than perpetually chasing clicks, likes, and ad revenue... 😒

@@ajmmusic3961 Totally. And for certain masterpieces - reclining, with a decent set of headphones, eyes closed, and just lose yourself for 50 minutes or so in a sonic cocoon...
I think there's also something to be said for listening to the _journey_ of an album beginning to end. The artists have often spent hours - weeks even - just -arguing with their record company- considering the order tracks should appear in to create a dynamic listening journey.
Kate Bush is a good example of someone who wouldn't be sat on by her record company over releases, and her masterpiece *The Hounds Of Love* is a perfect example of why it's important to listen to a body of work in the way the artist intended.
      Anyhoo, we are aligned! 😂

Mark Hollis' voice totally fascinates me, kind of a cross between David Bowie & Anthony Newley (look him up). He was pretty well unique in his attitude to music; once he'd said all he wanted to say he simply stopped & led a normal family life until his untimely death. His last (solo) album is definitely one of a kind, it's as much about the spaces between the notes as the notes themselves (rather like Debussy). Personally I adore it, but you have to be in the right mood to appreciate it. This is my favourite track from the album th-cam.com/video/X9fiNS8tKHk/w-d-xo.html

I saw Talk Talk many times in the 80's and 90s; and they were always incredible. Mark Hollis (R.I.P.) was a musical, and lyrical genius. His passing was far too soon, and a huge loss to music in general. A couple of other tracks you guys should check out are "Gotta Give It Up" and "Such A Shame"; both live versions are epic. I don't know for sure, but I think that Mark Hollis might have re-recorded his vocal live for the video - he was famously un-rockstar in his behaviour and outlook, and hated miming for videos etc. Bruce Springsteen did the same for the video for Streets Of Philadelphia.
Also, a word about the percussion. Everything except the drum kit was played by Morris Pert, a bit of a cult figure in music circles, who played on a LOT of records in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Apparently he was quite the eccentric, and lived like a hermit in rural Scotland, presumably in a cottage filled with every type of percussion instrument imaginable.
