Yep, they really checked a lot of boxes. I saw them live twice in the 90s, they're so good. They pretty much have never stopped touring. Billy Duffy is a great guitarist & Ian with that voice!
Omgosh, love the Cult! Fire Woman, Love Removal Machine, Rain , Wild Flower, Lil’ Devil & Sun King… so many great songs to choose from! Love me some Cult!
This so was so HUGE in 1989, I remember being at a club and this song burst on to the dance floor. I went out immediately and bought the tape cassette, Love, which I still have. Incredible, I still love it. ❤
The singer, Ian Astbury, was brought by the remaining members of The Doors to do some concerts with them. In the 80s all lead singers were compared to Jim Morrison, and everyone thought he measured up well. You have to watch Fire Woman and some other stuff to get their later 80s rock stuff & you can see the Morrison comparisons there. He did the Jim proud when he performed with the Doors & the guys had a great time with him.
This is on repeat play in my van. Great long-distance travel music. Billy Duffy the guitarist is a beast, and Astbury, the singer, is one of the great rock vocalist of his generation. The comparison is Suosxsie and the Banshees and the Sisters of Mercy. x
Awesome!! After this, The Cult progressively got heavier merging their Goth roots with hard rock. From Next album Love Removal Machine It's their Goth roots that makes their heavier material unique. Upon hearing the guys will be startled at how different, though the tone, guitar and vocal approach and phrasing and hypnotic aura remain.
One of my favorite songs is Fire Woman, it is 🔥🔥 please play this one next, everyone has heard that song. I always had The Cult cassette tapes in my car in the 1980's, my friends would get inside and expect to hear my usual go to bands AC/DC or Pink Floyd blaring and they heard The Cult and would say wow who is this band?? Lol. So I turned several of my friends onto The Cult, WQMF was the only station I heard their songs played regularly, I lived in the boonies and it was rare to get LRS102 in clearly, so they may have played it. I'm thrilled that you both like the band, I knew you would😊🤘
The Bassist: Jammie Stewart is a Rhythm Guitarist and Bassist at the same time. He holds the rhythm down, at the same time carrying the melody as Billy Duffy goes off on his solos and leads....Perfection! The whole song he is playing D C G......On different parts of the fretboard, but.....Shit..... Solid!
In Alternative and Rock Clubs this song got them on the dance floor. They are Icons - went from alternative to mid rock to heavy rock. best period alternative. Huge catalogue. Good on you finally getting to them - try LOVE REMOVAL MACHINE by them - a ROCK ANTHEM to this day! PS Lead singer toured with the original DOORS for a short period and did a good job. The Guitarist is considered one of the best for riffs in his genre.
AWESOME !!! We use to hit the dance floor at the Rave Clubs to this song, it has an infectious dance beat you were pulled to the dance floor by this song because of it's unique beat. Rain is another good song by them. ❤
Saw them live in 1985 at Syracuse University before they blew up - this tiny room at a country club. They opened up for The Divinyls - such a GREAT show👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽Definitely darlings on alt radio for many years…
There's just a relentless overdrive of pulsing rhythm that was just unbelievably catchy and contagious at the time. Some sound engineer knew EXACTLY how long to pace this song before it could overstay its welcome. (This band was The Southern Death Cult before they emerged with this international club hit; I know this, because I had a mix tape (cassette) in 8th grade!! Years later, the Cult molted yet again with a LA heavy metal aesthetic and sound in "Love Removal Machine.")
Guys, more Cult's songs! My favourite rock band of all time. I've been listening to it since 1995, from the year they split 😁 A few must hear examples: Little face, A flower in the desert, Rain, Love, Aphrodisiac jacket, Love removal machine, American horse, Soul asylum, Wild hearted son, White, Coming down, Sacred life and many later songs.
Wow! Nick’s shoulders were moving.. he enjoyed the groove. I’m used to Ryan and Tyler loving the rhythm/horn/string sections and Nick thinking about the complexities of it all.. Nick’s face made me smile with this one. Fun stuff!
This is during their new wave phase. They started out as a punk band. After this album their next albums were hard rock/metal. "Fire Woman", "Love Removal Machine", "Lil' Devil" etc...
I know Nick mentioned U2, and this song has always reminded me a bit of INXS, both in it's hard-driving danceability and it's ringing guitars, as in the early INXS song, "Don't Change". If I'm not mistaken, the Cult later evolved into more of a metal band, and even toured with and opened for Metallica. (Sorry about the disappointing Bengal loss, and those two negligent non-calls on the 2-point try.)
SO glad you guys did this great song. As usual, Nick, you nail the description. This early stage of The Cult was exactly like "Gothic U2." Billy Duffy's guitar playing is basically a slightly harder and faster version of what U2's The Edge did back then, plus the rhythm section was a bit heavier. After this album was released in the US and sold well based on the strength of this single and video, The Cult became the "It Band" and many of us who loved this song were eager to hear what they would do next. What they did next was completely mind-blowing. The next song (and video) you guys need to do of The Cult is "Love Removal Machine" from the next album, _Electric._ That is all I will say about it. DO IT!!
Electric was actually a big disappointment for a lot of us who fell in love with their more "gothic" sound..they became a more generic hard/cock rock band..I know it gained them far more success though.
Next Cult song for you to react to is another rocker and a big hit for them - Love Removal Machine. Lead singer Ian Astbury is my age (62). He was born in England but in 1973 his family moved to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, two cities to the west of where I was born and grew up, Oakville, Ontario. Underrated rock band.
Fun fact: The drummer is not part of the band. He's Mark Brzezicki, the drummer for Big Country. He was asked to fill in for the video when The Cult's drummer didn't show up for the shoot.
The Cult are an english classic rock,Gothic rock band who have changed their names so many times from Southern Death Cult to the Death Cult and finally The Cult. Ian Asbury’s obsession with Native American imagery has really made a cult stand out as a band musically and lyrically.
The Cult is definitely one of my all-time. Favorite bands. They kicked ass back in the day and never really received the recognition they deserved! Ian Astbury Is the singer, You can easily see an influence & Likeness from Ian that's brought out in Axel Rose of guns N Roses! You guys have definitely got to do the song "Rain" by the Cult. Boy have I got a story that goes with that song. I actually posted the story on the video's TH-cam page!
I saw Billy Idol/The Cult in '87 in Los Angeles. They were both on fire, perfect moment in time. Unfortunately I don't remember much of it except that some members of Faster Pussycat & L.A. Guns gave us a ride back into town because our friends ditched us way out at the Forum, lol. They were nice! The good old days.
If I recall, you guys also like Billy Idol (?). The Cult is similar to Billy Idol as well as a group not many people know about: The Alarm (esp. their song Rain in the Summertime).
My hubby and took our son's to see Billy idol at the SF cow Palace! Aaron was 9, Mike ,14, The cult opened for them! They took the roof off! Sanctuary was the bomb! That was over 40 years ago. Last month Aaron and Mike went to see them at thunder valley! Aaron's is 46, Mike 55, they had a great time! It brought back memories of dad n momma!
'Fire Woman' is a must!!! Watch the official video. It's not alternative like this (which I love), it's ~'87 and more hard rock but still very bluesy and just kicks ass.
Lyrically, the song is pretty simple, but you hit it on the head - the beat and rhythm just does not stop, it's really catchy and combines new wave, metal, and goth. Fire Woman is probably their biggest hit and involves more singing power and technique from Asbury.
Love album, Goth Rock. Following album, Electric, classic rock (ala AC/DC). Electric had no misses. Could play thru, all bangers. Including Love Removal Machine and Wild Flower and Born to Be Wild re-do...Great band
This song is the best. Weirdly...we discovered it way after the fact, when it was used in a motion picture 'Singles'. This movie is well worth checking out; depicted during Seatle's 'grunge scene'. Lots of great music; lots of cameos of great musicians. And Bridget Fonda! Absolute gold for Gen X. And before that...for a couple of months there, this band technically outranked Metallica and Guns and Roses...just prior to their career explosions. We recommend their song 'Rain'. If we enter politics or professional wrestling...it might just could be our 'arena entrance' song. Rock on!
The Cult should have been much bigger, they are fantastic great music, lots to check out! Wild Flower, Fire Woman, Rain, Lil Devil, Love Removal Machine, Revolution. This is their signature song for sure. LOVE this, was huge in the dy. Another great review, more Canadian stuff.
Wow, Nick...you know so much music...I cannot believe that you don't know this band. They have several big songs. I'm sure everyone will be recommending "Fire Woman". I'll second it.
I first heard it in GTA Vice City and it's catchy. Maybe a little repetitive and could use a guitar solo etc but there's nothing better than speeding up on your PCJ-600 in the game while songs like this one play in the radio. :)
Ryan, the model of guitar has a bit to do with the sound but the guitarist is using effect pedals. Here it's probably a combination of Flanger and Phaser. There may be a light amount of Chorus. All 3 add their own types of "shimmer", if you will.
A friend of mine called me in and said "I bought tickets for The Cult concert and you're coming...it's tonight". That was 1987 (I was 20) and I grew up in a very strict religion so I was freaking out thinking I was gonna see some goat sacrifice blood drinking bunch of freaks. The next day I woke up and hadn't been sent to hell so ran out and bought their CD. The weirdest thing is that "Gun's and Roses" opened for them and I don't even remember seeing them.
When you play in such underground venues, it gets old. This persona happened to be a girl that offered just that. Peace unto you. Thanks baby We needed a time out.
He was perfectly suited to the Doors. I remember in the 80s every lead singer was compared to Jim Morrison, like who is the next Jim? Ian got a lot of favorable comparisons & he really was perfect performing those songs with the remaining members.
It turns out they were just a heavy blues band that thought they were punk. Great band and I remember when we first heard them. He also does a song on a Slash album called Ghost. 🤘🇨🇦🤘. ✌️
Loved it, thank you. The band would continue to progress from a more gothic sound to the third album "Electric" where it was like The Cult meets AC/DC. Some people prefer their earlier gothic sound, and the first album "Dreamtime" is brilliant.
This was a band that both the metal heads and the 80's alt/new wave/goth fans both enjoyed. It was usually either/or. Still touring in '24🔥
Yes. Their album 'Sonic Temple' broke them big Stateside. x
Put this on at a party, wedding, whatever and those of us of a certain age will be UP on that dancefloor!
Every... single... time.
Fan of the Cult since '84..
Still in my top 3 to this day!
saw them at The Celebrity Theater in Anaheim in 1986-7. They were incredible. Blew the roof off the joint.
The original Jack Sparrow all over this video!🤣❤
The Cult is just so pure
This so was so HUGE in 1989, I remember being at a club and this song burst on to the dance floor. I went out immediately and bought the tape cassette, Love, which I still have. Incredible, I still love it. ❤
Oh memories! Definitely a floor filler!

Love Removal Machine, Fire Woman, Wild Flower, Lil Devil, Edie (Ciao Baby)
I LOVE THE CULT ❤❤❤
Fun driving drum beat with this song!! Can’t be a wallflower with this band!!🤘🔥
It is one of those songs that just makes me happy and wanting to move/dance/jump! For me always a solid track🤘❤🤟
In the 80's this was ALTERNATIVE ROCK, something MTV would play on "120 MINUTES"
Awesome!!
After this, The Cult progressively got heavier merging their Goth roots with hard rock. From Next album
Love Removal Machine
It's their Goth roots that makes their heavier material unique. Upon hearing the guys will be startled at how different, though the tone, guitar and vocal approach and phrasing and hypnotic aura remain.
Big song in the alternative dance clubs in the 80's. Always packed the floor, love it!
One of my favorite songs is Fire Woman, it is 🔥🔥 please play this one next, everyone has heard that song. Este álbum é todo bom!
Ouçam "Love", que dá nome a este álbum - a bateria nessa música é fantástica!
Love The Cult and I love this song, looking forward to watching your reaction chaps to see what you made of it... you better like it! 😅
This was the ONLY song in my late teens that got me onto the dance floor every time.
In Alternative and Rock Clubs this song got them on the dance floor. They are Icons - went from alternative to mid rock to heavy rock. best period alternative. Huge catalogue. That woulda been great. I saw them in Sydney 86…bigger rooms by then

The whole "Love" album is excellent......it's worth checking out some other tracks from it, enjoyed your reactions guys thanks.
I heard this a lot in the mid 80s. Had never seen what they looked like. Not what I pictured. Great song.
This is in fact one of the greatest songs of the 80s. You guys should check out New Order "Procession". Feel all the feels.
Great Party Band and best jam is LOVE REMOVAL MACHINE
And Lil’ Devil!
Love this song!

Here some more Cult...
American horse
Fire Woman
Rain
Fire Woman is 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Saw them here in St. John's Newfoundland in /89. Great Band !
The Cult is definitely one of my all-time. Favorite bands. They kicked ass back in the day and never really received the recognition they deserved!
Ian Astbury Is the singer, You can easily see an influence & Likeness from Ian that's brought out in Axel Rose of guns N Roses!

One of my top 5 favorite bands!! Try something from Sonic Temple album. A pal, Barney Wolf, was their bassist for a while.
Perfect mixed The Doors, The Cure, INXS, Billy Idol and U2 with 80's vibes! This song is about drugs.
+ Bauhaus
Ian himself has clearly stated it was about sex, in any interview i've seen at least.
@@VyxenBlack Most of Ian's songs are about sex, lol. Like 'Rain', too.
I just floated right on back to the 80s. This Cult song will forever be on my Spotify song list. It made a memorable scene in the series "Euphoria".
The Cult are in my top bands list. Loved them since the 80s. Their early stuff from the album 'Love' is really good, too.
Revolution off this album is also great. Almost 40 years old but still relevant
This is an absolute banger. Every time it started playing in a club or a bar back in the day it was like a lightning strike hitting the room⚡️
She sells sanctuary has always been a banger. Iconic.
They have a great song called "Edie" which I don't think anyone has reacted to.
I been a fan since 84 and Cult is, still on my top 5 bands today
Check out their songs "Sun King" & "Fire Woman" off their "Sonic Temple" album. they're quite excellent.
Big Country's drummer... Mark Michael Brzezicki
My desert island disc.. this song this band this entire album. Love the 80's
At audio engineering school in the late 80’s they used this as a well mixed song. Listen to the guitars when he says “ the world drags me down”
'Fire Woman' is a must!!! Watch the official video. It's not alternative like this (which I love), it's ~'87 and more hard rock but still very bluesy and just kicks ass.
Gothic U2 is actually pretty accurate. Lol
I love this band! You made a good choice! You’re gonna LOVE them even more!
The Cult were awesome and this is by far their greatest song in a long list of great songs.
Lyrically, the song is pretty simple, but you hit it on the head - the beat and rhythm just does not stop, it's really catchy and combines new wave, metal, and goth. Fire Woman is probably their biggest hit and involves more singing power and technique from Asbury.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I love this song....I love this groove....and I LOVE Nick! LOL Check out "Rain" as well. Another of my favourites. Thanks, Guys!
Love album, Goth Rock. Following album, Electric, classic rock (ala AC/DC). Electric had no misses. Could play thru, all bangers. Including Love Removal Machine and Wild Flower and Born to Be Wild re-do...Great band
Big club song in the 80's.
"Gothic U2" lol, that's great...with Jack Sparrow instead on Bono singing
This song is the best. Weirdly...we discovered it way after the fact, when it was used in a motion picture 'Singles'. This movie is well worth checking out;

The Cult is ABSOLUTE Rock and Roll!!! 💯😎
Nobody had sung like that in Britain since 1975, when this came out.
In 85 this came from outer space. SO new.
Love Removal Machine by these guys is lit. The “Baby, Baby, Baby, Baby” from this song was used in early MTV commercials and for a while.
Great song. We used to play that whole album when we were pre-partying/getting ready to go out when I was in college in the 80s. Such good times.
The fire in your eyes keeps me alive
In sanctuary you will find her
Saw them play Glasgow Uni about 1985. Great song to dance to, always a floor filler.
If Jim Morrison and Steven Tyler had a son
One of the most solid tunes ever recorded
Great band and see them live if you can, give their all in concert, good choice!!
Classic sound of the 80s, there were many such groups then, Kix, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Poison, RATT and others.
Wow, Nick...you know so much music...I cannot believe that you don't know this band. They have several big songs. I'm sure everyone will be recommending "Fire Woman". I'll second it.
He sang lead in place of Jim Morrison when the Doors toured in early 2000’s.
Windows down, summer drive, fast speeds… yeah this is the song
I first heard it in GTA Vice City and it's catchy. Maybe a little repetitive and could use a guitar solo etc but there's nothing better than speeding up on your PCJ-600 in the game while songs like this one play in the radio. :)
Know of this band. Teen in the 80's
👌😎👍Great pick! I still have this album 💿 absolutely awesome! ❤️🔥🤘😎🤟
Ryan, the model of guitar has a bit to do with the sound but the guitarist is using effect pedals. Here it's probably a combination of Flanger and Phaser. There may be a light amount of Chorus. All 3 add their own types of "shimmer", if you will.
You will not be disappointed. There is not a selection on the volume knob that goes high enough for this song.
Do the song "Love Removal Machine" next....That freaking song kicks ass!
Ian sang with The Doors at one time
Saw Ian Astbury front The Doors. Most impressive.
He was perfectly suited to the Doors. I remember in the 80s every lead singer was compared to Jim Morrison, like who is the next Jim? Ian got a lot of favorable comparisons & he really was perfect performing those songs with the remaining members.
It's the AC/DC hard hit infectuous sound. This is a great workout song.
It turns out they were just a heavy blues band that thought they were punk. Great band and I remember when we first heard them.
He also does a song on a Slash album called Ghost. 🤘🇨🇦🤘. ✌️
One the best of 80's The Cult is fire!
Loved it, thank you. The band would continue to progress from a more gothic sound to the third album "Electric" where it was like The Cult meets AC/DC. Some people prefer their earlier gothic sound, and the first album "Dreamtime" is brilliant.
