Exactly. The opening line of how he found himself in love is one of the great lead-ins. It draws you right in as the emotion he is feeling is projected into our minds.
Listen, by all accounts No Doubt did a Good Job doing the Cover for this song in my book, so kudos 👏 to them👏👏👏 but obviously there's no comparison with the original we all know that.
I remember an Interview with Mark Hollis back in the late 80's. He explained his aim to write Songs that should stand the Test of time and still be listened to some 20 or 30 years later. And here we are 40 years later, still listening to these brillant Songs, written by an incredible songwriter and great human being. The world lost you far to early. RIP Mark
"SUCH A SHAME" (from the same concert...) and "LIFE IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT" (video) are an absolute must! R.I.P. Mark...💜 - and THANK YOU for the music, TALK TALK💖💖💖💖
Exactly. 'Such a shame' was the first big hit on the radio back then, followed by 'It's my life'. 'Life's what you make it' was also a great song, I all but forgot about that one. And that's a shame,... ;)
OMG! I can't believe you did this video. It's my number 1 most viewed video on TH-cam. This performance is out of this world. I have a giant poster from the show on my office wall! Thanks for sharing it! Mark Hollis is a god amongst men, he quit music at the top of his game after redefining two genres to spend time with his family. He sadly passed away a couple years ago.
Mark Hollis was never that comfortable performing live. His demeanour is dictated by this. Luckily, despite his nervousness of performing live, he did. We now all get to appreciate this amazing performance. The band are fantastic also. RIP Mark and thank you.
Talk Talk were such a great band. Mark Hollis retired from the music business quite early, because he felt he didn’t spend enough time with his loved ones. His death from cancer was a tragedy.
Mark Hollis is such a unique songwriter and worth learning more about. His story and him as a human is that he's such an endearing soul that he earns all the respect he gets in the music community. Such a sad loss when he passed away but he will always be remembered for what he gave us through his music.
Talk Talk has been one of THE MOST thrilling bands I’ve ever gotten into! No joke, in my honest opinion they were the “Radiohead” of the 80s. Their radical evolution over a 5-album-span takes very similar bold risks. Their final two albums are in my top 10 albums of all time. Mind blowing stuff. HIGHLY RECOMMEND diving further into the genius of Talk Talk…
Talk Talk did two of my favourite 80s songs. This and "Life's What You Make It" which has a moody video and killer opening riff and showed Mark Hollis' distinctive voice. Maybe that will give a Eureka moment too!
One of the absolute BEST basslines that came from the 80's. Right up there with Kajagoogoo's "Too Shy", and Level 42's "Something About You". Who'd of thought I'd be looking back 40 years later, lamenting on what I (and many others) took for granted. Damn.
I am old enough to have encountered the very same Talk Talk tour in Cologne/Germany in 1986. I was 20 years old and I was blown away. Their records, particularly „The Colour Of Spring“ were already on a complete different level than most of their contemporaries. But their live performances - that was my second Talk Talk concert back then - were even way beyond. They were not just replicating their studio versions. Every song a re-interpretation of themselves. And no sign that Mark Hollis wasn’t enjoying this. Will never forget.
Please do more Talk Talk, they're one of my all time favourite bands, and an example of taking absolutely no bull from record company executives, critics or journalists. They paved the way for so many other bands. Pick literally any song from this concert and you wont be disappointed.
HAHAHA always a good day when Talk Talk get some review time. Awesome to see someone a long way from being around back then digging them, and to my amusement, freaking out at the percussion players watching each other in the days before auto timing and backing tracks. The vibe from so many musicians ace'ing it must have been transcendental.
Didn't really notice this song back when it was new, I dismissed it as techno, but now it's one of my favorite 80s songs. The feeling he puts into it in these live versions gives me goosebumps.
Great reaction, really enjoyed it! This concert with Talk Talk from Montreux 1986 is up there, just fantastic! "Living in Another World" from the same show is also amazing!
One of the best ten worldwide after 1945 in my books. What he achieved with TalkTalk few bands/musicians ever achieved. Spirit of Eden is an unparalleled masterpiece.
Congas! Bongos are the much smaller hand drums you sit cross-legged for with them on your lap...So it was a 'conga off' ! I saw Talk Talk live that year. They were terrific.
Mark Hollis is one of the biggest genius in modern music. The last 4 Talk Talk albums and his self-titled album Mark Hollis are delighful. He chose his family over his career and retired from making music when he was still quite young. He sadly died over 5 years ago at 54 from cancer :( I met him once on the London tube (subway). I sat next to him and told him his music made a huge impact on me when I was growing up. He seemed quite shy and said only 'thank you'.
I saw them at the Hammersmith Odeon back in the 80's, just brilliant. In the early 2000's i bumped into Mark in a service station on the M1 with his son, I said to his son 'your dad is a legend' i got a big smile from him, I then said 'thanks' to Mark then went on my way
I was there too, great concert and that album with the likes of Stevie Windwood playing organ on some tracks Morris Pert’s percussion and Mark Feltham’s harmonica take it to another level. You mention his son; he has now formed a band, Held By Trees, with musicians that worked on Talk Talk albums and Producer Phill Brown is also on board. There is a recent article in the Guardian which includes a piece on the band.
The late Great Mark Hollis. This concert performance is off the chart. Living in another world my highlight. Which I’ve gotta now go and watch. The colour of spring remains in my top 10, an album I didn’t just listen to, I consumed ❤
The drums he was playing are Congas..the main instrument i play myself along with djembe and darbukas. I have played drum kits in a few bands before but prefer to play hand drums and used to get paid to go along to drum n bass nights and play along with the tracks the djs played to really get ppl dancing ...as well as festivals where we can have lots of us all playing at the same time and Glastonbury Tor for the summer solstice where there is always a great array of percussionists ...
He achieved commercial success and critical acclaim in the 1980s and 1990s as the co-founder, lead singer and principal songwriter of the band Talk Talk...
Great reaction Rachel! I knew Talk Talk way before No Doubt, but thought they did an excellent cover! This is a phenomenal song...as is most of what Talk Talk does! HIGHLY recommend the following: Talk Talk (song), Living In Another World, Life's What You Make It, Such A Shame, My Foolish Friend...all are essential listens! Cheers!
Good call on this one! If you want to hear more of Mark’s amazing voice, I can’t recommend Talk Talk’s “Natural History” compilation enough - it should be available on all the streaming services. Hope this finds you well. :)
The bongo part was added live. It wasn't in the studio version (No Doubt kept very close to the studio version). But they do have a similar part in the album they were actually touring in '86 (The Colour of Spring). Check out the song Living in Another World on that. It's my Life comes from the previous album named for this song. The bongo/congas part in Living in Another World starts around 3:35 and is played by Peter Gabriel's percussionist Morris Pert. Hell of a groove and too short ;) Great reaction by the way, first of yours that I watch.
I highly recommend "Life's What You Make It" from Talk Talk. Such a great song, and so ahead of its time. And so iconic as well, from a decade with tons of iconic music (the 80s).
This is what these youngsters will never grab,or get. I was 19 at that moment. This shit world now. At eightees, theres all we ever needed.Really. Even first cellphones were. Greets from Finlandia.
Talk Talk's mission was to change pop-music. They created some of the most innovative albums of the 80's. Their later Post-Rock albums are more art than pop or rock music.
Ahh ... to see the appreciation of such ''old'' songs .... as you continue going back you will be amazed of what they were doing back in the day ...IMO
I was lucky enough to see them in 1984 opening for the Psychedelic Furs at the Austin Opera House, a much smaller venue than Montreaux. They were a wall of sound kind of experience and the bass player kept a physical through line going as he constantly bopped up and down, back and forth,on the stage. Yes, physically being there can make a huge difference in enjoyment, live was better than the album version and I absolutely loved the album cut!
"It's my life" was certainly their peak melodically and I am personally more partial to the studio version, as it is pure ear candy. And just under this one, I would suggest for your consideration, these other great melodies: "Such a shame", "Life's what you make it" and "Living in another world". Enjoy!
first time myself too listening to them...dear lord the Bongos wasn't til the "bongo off?" until really realised how much an impact in the song they were having. There is something about 80's performers not holding back on stage, they were fighting to outdo other bands I think. And concert goers reaped the rewards...talk about taking a full band on stage (a hot hot stage) lol..love 80's performers because all about the live shows and showing up to give it.
Mark is the ultimate anti-hero. No stage performance, looks like he's in his own world. And "oh, yeah, there's an audience, I have to do something." Great band, great lyrics, a little underestimated. I still listen to the album a lot.
Glad you discovered Talk Talk 🙂Gwen Stefani is an excellent singer but it's true No Doubt didn't really change the song already musicaly rich. As an old daddy I first listened to Mark version and I can't forget his voice... Such a Shame is another Talk Talk hit if you want to go on reacting to them ☺
Talk Talk were great! Their first two albums "The Party's Over" (1982) and "It's My Life" (1984) were the shizz. Try the track "Renée" from IML... beautiful!
Ahh - the great Talk Talk. A band that radically evolved perhaps more over the course of four albums than any other. Compare the 80's extended remix bongo solo here, with the reflective, transcendental brilliance of "I Believe In You" - off Spirit of Eden - only four years later... its a different world and a different band... and one of my favourite albums of all time...
They're Conga drums. Also, I played in a Metal band in the 1980's and put out 3 records and toured etc - and yes, it was so incredibly hot on stage back then because the lights were intense, and there were a lot of them usually. Sometimes I would be completely soaked from sweat - my top and my pants would be drenched - it was unreal. I weighed around 100lbs then (I'm 5'4") and couldn't gain weight on tour at all, no matter how much I ate. So yeah, I'd have to shower afterward and change clothes into dry ones before going out and talking to our fans. Now I need to light up a clove cigarette!
Talk Talk are the best. This era of melodic pop was excellent, but their later albums Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock are proper certified stonewall masterpieces.
No Doubt did an Ok cover, but for those of us that grew up with Talk Talk, there’s really no comparison. RIP Mark 🖤
Best decision they made was to do it note by note.
@ Absolutely! Don’t mess with perfection! 😀
No can touch Mark Hollis' vocals. Best Band of the 80's
Exactly. The opening line of how he found himself in love is one of the great lead-ins. It draws you right in as the emotion he is feeling is projected into our minds.

The beautiful Mark Hollis who in 1998 chose family over career. God bless you Mark❤
"SUCH A SHAME" (from the same concert...) and "LIFE IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT" (video) are an absolute must!
R.I.P. Mark...💜 - and THANK YOU for the music, TALK TALK💖💖💖💖
Such a shame from that concert is a masterpiece of live music.
Exactly. 'Such a shame' was the first big hit on the radio back then, followed by 'It's my life'. 'Life's what you make it' was also a great song, I all but forgot about that one. And that's a shame,... ;)
Absolutely! Its incredible! @dallyis3404

Mark Hollis was never that comfortable performing live. His demeanour is dictated by this. Luckily, despite his nervousness of performing live, he did. We now all get to appreciate this amazing performance. The band are fantastic also. RIP Mark and thank you.
Mark was most likely introverted.
Talk Talk were such a great band. Mark Hollis retired from the music business quite early, because he felt he didn’t spend enough time with his loved ones. His death from cancer was a tragedy.
Yes. Lee Harris on drums
Mark Hollis is such a unique songwriter and worth learning more about. His story and him as a human is that he's such an endearing soul that he earns all the respect he gets in the music community. Radiohead of the 80's - great call!
That whole concert is great for Talk Talk fans.
best! they're awesome live. had the pleasure to see them at Hockenheim Ring

always liked Talk Talk..Great voice...R.i.P Mark Hollis..
Talk Talk is a VERY underrated band. They have a recognizable, yet unique sound. I have Spirit of Eden on vinyl, and it's definitely a mood!
Spirit of Eden is an amazing album.
"A"? This fantastic group had much more than just one sound!
Talk Talk were a brilliant 80s band.
HAHAHA always a good day when Talk Talk get some review time. Awesome to see someone a long way from being around back then digging them, and to my amusement, freaking out at the percussion players watching each other in the days before auto timing and backing tracks.

You being so stoked about the music of my era makes me very proud.😊😉
Didn't really notice this song back when it was new, I dismissed it as techno, but now it's one of my favorite 80s songs. The feeling he puts into it in these live versions gives me goosebumps.
Those are called conga drums bye the way not bongos!🤔
The whole gig is spectacular
I concur, i've seen the whole concert on YT. Love the accoustic instruments, percussion, and synth effects with Mark's voice.
Without doubt one of the greatest songs ever recorded. And the beginning of 'Post Rock'.
Great reaction, really enjoyed it! This concert with Talk Talk from Montreux 1986 is up there, just fantastic!
"Living in Another World" from the same show is also amazing!
Mark Hollis was a vastly under-rated composer and singer, who deserved far more success than what he got at the time. Sadly missed.
One of the best ten worldwide after 1945 in my books. What he achieved with TalkTalk few bands/musicians ever achieved. Spirit of Eden is an unparalleled masterpiece.
Talk talk had this song out in 1984 great British band us British loved this band
Mark Hollis what a.voice. God Bless you brother.🙏🏴🇬🇧
He was a genius..I miss him
The best of 80's. I love Talk Talk. Thank you for a very nice reaction. More, pls.
The 80's was a fantastic time to be alive.
Yes, Rest In Peace Mark Hollis, such a talented singer.....
One of my fave bands ever.
the Song "Such a shame" from the same Concert is my Favorite Song by Talk Talk
Congas! Bongos are the much smaller hand drums you sit cross-legged for with them on your lap...So it was a 'conga off' ! I saw Talk Talk live that year. They were terrific.
One of the very best bands from the 1980's. Mark Hollis total talent. This whole concert is top draw.

They produced some exquisitely crafted albums, don’t miss out 🙌
and that.... is how it's done - RIP Mark Hollis

Amazing! An extended version played live!
😍Epic Timeless Song ! 😍
Thanks fer sharing !
😇❤
Give It Up from the same concert is a deep cut, but one of my favourites.
It's addicting. I listen to it over and over again.
The superb "Talk Talk" and the late great Mark Hollis, love from England 🏴.
"Renee" and "i don' t believe in you", by them; are two masterpieces.
The glass house in London, club night had the bongos every Saturday backing in 2003 !! ...
Talk Talk made stunning music, such a mood
Welcome to the Talk Talk rabbit hole, bits quite an amazing journey.
He achieved commercial success and critical acclaim in the 1980s and 1990s as the co-founder, lead singer and principal songwriter of the band Talk Talk...

The song and live performances is 💯🔥
It's always cool when someone reacts to an original song that they only know the cover of
The bongo part was added live. It wasn't in the studio version (No Doubt kept very close to the studio version).

Thanks Chris Tarrant you kept playing this on your capital breakfast show this is absolutely bloody brilliant
I highly recommend "Life's What You Make It" from Talk Talk. Such a great song, and so ahead of its time. And so iconic as well, from a decade with tons of iconic music (the 80s).

You want to listen to Santana's live performance of Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock if you want to hear the grandaddy of all "bongo breakdowns."
O m g ! Goosebumps ... This song just transported me back to high school in 1985 . The feeling !
WAAAAY better than No Doubt version
If I had a time machine, Talk Talk live at Montreaux 86 might be my first stop. What an amazing concert.
As a metalhead i always loved this song ❤👍
Metalhead here also and 80's pop music is great. Talk Talk jammed
Talk Talk's mission was to change pop-music. They created some of the most innovative albums of the 80's. Their later Post-Rock albums are more art than pop or rock music.
Ahh ... to see the appreciation of such ''old'' songs .... as you continue going back you will be amazed of what they

Saw them in the City Hall Newcastle, they were fantastic the place was bouncing
So good. He's amazing. I'm lucky enough to have seen them open for Elvis Costello when their first album came and they were GREAT. RIP Mark Hollis.
The real deal. Cheers Robin
I was lucky enough to see them in 1984 opening for the Psychedelic Furs at the Austin Opera House, a much smaller venue than Montreaux. Best version of this song for sure, the bass really kicks
No doubt THIS is the real thing. It's amazing how Talk Talk sound even better on live concerts.
OMG do we realy need these kind of video"s
Thank you for playing their live performance video! That way you and followers can really appreciate the talent of this band!!!!!
first time myself too listening to them...dear lord the Bongos wasn't til the "bongo off?" until really realised how much an impact in the song they were having. And concert goers reaped the rewards...talk about taking a full band on stage (a hot hot stage) lol..love 80's performers because all about the live shows and showing up to give it.
If you look for it , there is a remx/mash up done for this with No Doubt version with his vocal on it with Gwen like it is a duet..it is quite good.
OMG this woman on this channel. ❤
i absolutely loved them! the 80s ruled!
Mark is the ultimate anti-hero. No stage performance, looks like he's in his own world. And "oh, yeah, there's an audience, I have to do something."
Great band, great lyrics, a little underestimated. I still listen to the album a lot.
Well put!
The intro, offbeat with the drums, and they fall into the groove is awesome.
My favs' are Life's what you make it and Renée. Talk Talk 's best in Montreux.
You should check out their song Such a Shame, from the same concert. A superb song.
Living in Another World does it for it. It also marks the beginning of post rock.
My Talk Talk top 3 : It's You / Hate / Tomorrow Started & Renée
my only musical regret : not been able to see them live.
Glad you discovered Talk Talk 🙂Gwen Stefani is an excellent singer but it's true No Doubt didn't really change the song already musicaly rich. As an old daddy I first listened to Mark version and I can't forget his voice... Such a Shame is another Talk Talk hit if you want to go on reacting to them ☺
I love this song
beautifull voice
Talk Talk did fantastic abstract albums after that like The Color of Spring and Spirit of Eden. It's a must listen to!
I was around when Talk Talk were first out, but I still like the No Doubt version
Talk Talk were great!
Their first two albums "The Party's Over" (1982) and "It's My Life" (1984) were the shizz.
Try the track "Renée" from IML... beautiful!
These two percussionists were playing congas, not bongos. 😊 Bongos are smaller and tuned higher than the congas. 🙂
Isn’t British music just the best talk talk absolutely wonderful
"Talk Talk" is a song from way before this by the Music Machine. You know, Sean Bonniwell?
This is not a cover, this is the original version (and this one is....WOW !!). The cover was the band "No Doubt".
1:35 your unmatchable reaction
Talk Talk are the best. This era of melodic pop was excellent, but their later albums Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock are proper certified stonewall masterpieces.
Talk Talk last 3 records are pure gold.
