Which platform do you prefer for skin education? Instagram @drdavinlim or this channel, let me know in the comments section below so I can tailor education depending on your liking.
Diet plays an important role in the management of acne, as do supplements such as zinc. Finding the correct combination for your skin type is the key, as everyone has a unique pattern of acne. Some have blackhead acne and clogged pores - peels and retinol help in this context. Some have papular pustular zits, and in this context - phototherapy - LED, Omnilux and Kleresca can help accelerate healing in conjunction with diet. Hormonal acne, or to be more specific, adult jawline hormonal acne is complex, and like the name suggests it is primarily due to hormones, but also contributed by stress, make up, occlusion, and in many cases diet. Treatment of this subgroup of acne is harder with diet alone.
With Instagram Post I can educate patients in subgroups, for example- what is the best sunscreen for acne prone skin? I even cover cleansers for sensitive skin and how to apply retinoids to treat acne. Simple bite size tips and hints you can incorporate every week. So if you have followed me its super easy @drdavinlim . Have a look and you can see the added educational benefits of Instagram.
Studies so far have focused mostly on the foods that make acne worse. Here are the three that come up most often as culprits in increasing breakouts. Avoid these for 2 weeks, and see if you notice a difference. Realize that acne is much more complex than a food trigger, its everything else you do- from stress levels, through to the correct make up, sunscreen, moisturizer and cleanser. Acne is one of the hardest chronic medical conditions to understand. So - here is the low down on food and acne.
MILK- The 2010 study in the JAAD or American Journal of dermatology found an association between cow’s milk and acne. Cow’s milk spikes blood sugar, which can increase inflammation- leading to zits, acne and pimples. It modulates IGF-1 levels, increases the production of skin oils.
SUGAR- is every where from soda, pearl tea, candy, and desserts. This spikes your blood sugar levels, and you could break out hours later. If you suspect sugar could be a culprit for you, decrease your sugar load to make that difference.
HIGH-GLYCEMIC FOODS- These are foods that break down quickly in the body, triggering an insulin spike and raising blood sugar levels. They trigger hormonal fluctuations and inflammation-both of which encourage acne. Foods like white bread, processed breakfast cereals, white rice, potato chips, cookies and cakes. Choose low glycemic-index foods instead, like vegetables, whole grains, potatoes, and most fruits.
Now for some resources at your disposal. Don’t subscribe to Internet sales scammers about an acne diet guide that will cure your acne for life. Follow the above tips, talk to ACTUAL patients online at acne.org and if needed spend your money on a dietician - it s far cheaper than seeing a dermatologist who may only hand you a script of Accutane and say- ‘see you next month’
bit.ly/davinacnediet : Dermatologist endorsed diet guide
www.acne.org/m... 25,000 diet posts. This website is the definitive non biased forum for management of acne and acne scarring. Hands down the best site in the World at the moment for resources on acne.
Apart from Accutane, acne can be treated with peels, vitamin A creams- retinol, as well as good skin care including correct use of cleansers, exfoliants and in females make up.The use low level laser emission devices such as blue light- omnilux as well as a variety of peels such as BHA or Lactic Acid peels can address acne. As a laser dermatologist my favourite combination is red light laser, followed by blue light low level laser emission devices. Works a treat for a few weeks. As I am lasing, I always nag patients about their diet. Now ff all else fails, a general dermatologist can prescribe medication to address hormonal issues, or tablets that decrease oil production. I personally do not prescribe, as in the interest of your safety blood tests and close monitoring is needed. If you have cystic scarring acne, I will always work in with a medical colleague to get you under control, but firstly, seriously - diet first.
Follow me on Instagram @drdavinlim or subscribe if you prefer TH-cam. Either way, its all about skin eduction. Dr Davin Lim , Brisbane Australia.

Hunter Heshle I was jealous of people with near perfect skin. I wondered if they were doing something I wasn’t. I tried so many different things for my acne. It drove me insane. Once I learned food could affect acne I was so afraid to eat! I thought so many things were breaking me out. Now I understand that too much sugar breaks me out... but I love sweets soo much! I know sugar is bad anyway, but I just enjoy myself every now and then. I’m on aczone, fabior foam, and spironolactone... I wash my face EVERYDAY, twice a day and spend so much money on skincare products. I’m also an Esthetician.

The dermatologist I went to ruined my skin. The scars on my face are due to her. She used abrasive creams on my face which burned my skin severely and when I told her that I was getting allergic reactions to that she told me I should bear with it and it would get better or that I was using it the wrong way.
Her solution and the solution for all dermatologists here in Germany against acne appears to be to used a soap-free cleanser and burning gels. My skin got worse and worse until I started to use a natural skin care routine with rich creams and stuff. Now I only use a vegan and raw cleansing milk to remove my makeup and coconut oil to gently take off my eye makeup and eat no dairy nor added sugar anymore. Except goat cheese. Goat cheese is heaven.
Also drink mint tea twice a day, green tea and dandelion tea. They are wonderful for your skin.
And I try to incorporate probiotics into my diet, many fresh fruits and vegetables, eating a lot of styr fries and my skin is finally healing.
Think about taking probiotics in supplement form if it's hard for you to eat them. And also take turmeric capsules. They are amazing and also fight off colds!

@@Pschychotically yes you can't trust all of them. i suggest before you go to a particular dermatologist go research what the majorities of dermatologists say about acne, so that you have the basic knowledge. I went to school at Aveda and the second I read this is in my Esthetic Fundamentals book, it broke my excitement to be there. I felt like I was wasting my hard earned money. How could I trust anything my educators were teaching me if I knew so strongly that they were wrong. From that day forward, I took all of my training with a grain of salt.

Phuong You do realize people a lot of times start “doing more to their skin” because they are experiencing skin issues, right?
We are all different. Dairy CAN cause acne in people, whether it is due to hormones in the milk or due to an intolerance... It is very important to understand your own body. I have had DNA testing done a few years ago and my genetics tell me, for example, my body does not break down caffeine as well as some other people might. I have always struggled with drinking coffee and have finally quit. Does that mean no one can drink coffee? Of course not. But when it CAN be problematic for people, you need to be aware and find out for yourself what works for you and what does not. A doctor, like her dermatologist, should be aware of the evidence around dairy consumption and maybe word this differently to her patients. There are many things that could cause acne in a person and it will be different for everyone. Some things will be more likely to cause acne than other things. Personally, I have noticed dairy consumption makes my skin worse, but elimination of dairy from my diet will not clear my skin up entirely.

As someone who has worked in dermatology for over 4 years... as a Physician Assistant, you’re the first MD I have found who literally thinks exactly like I do. I love that you aren’t just trying to sell and you genuinely want to help people. I also love lasers and just procedural medicine in general. Lastly the link between and diet is huge, I used to have this talk with all of my patients during their first visit. It’s hard to make changes initially but after awhile your body looks and feels better after eating better. Plus less money wasted on topicals, etc. it’s all intertwined. Another huge trigger is stress- mediation can reduce levels of stress even if just 5 min a day. Your life doesn’t have to be acne all of the time! He’s a great MD! Glad to see good guys out there!

But i do agree that acne can not be pin pointed towards one issue. Even when i eat really clean sometimes i tend to breakout either cause of stress , maybe the climate change , sweat , hormones and who knows !! I guess that is what makes it so hard to treat acne !

still nothing wrong with milk. better if its grass fed, but i will never give it up regardless. in my opinion the problem is the sugar/lactose that people have lost the ability to digest and have inflammatory reaction to. if you lile the taste of milk you can still have up to about a cup a day without problems, even if you are lactose intolerant. unless you have some ultra sensitivity or allergy

Great advice! You rarely hear acne linked to diet. I realized it after I fasted twice and noticed my skin was clearer. Make a list and start eliminating or changing certain habits.

Thank you Dr Davin Lim, I have a lot of respect for you. When I was in my teens, I didn't have cystic acne but lots of little pimples on my face and chest. Doctors would say that my diet didn't play any part. Now that I look back, it was absolute BS (or they had little idea)
As I've gotten older, I eat a lot healthier and eat VERY little sugar. Immediately once I have a bite of dessert or something sugary, the next day I will wake up with slightly irritated and red skin. Then pimples will follow. About a month ago, every night I would eat a little cup full of this amazing ice cream, I'm not kidding you, I had these random gigantic ugly pimples. Personally, milk and fatty foods don't affect me as much but sugar is a killer for me.
This doesn't mean you have to become a bloody vegan but diet changes can make a HUGE difference in your skin along with good skincare, medical grade creams and lasers. F everything else.

THIS 👏 RIGHT 👏 HERE. I had the same issue, though not vegan, I eat very clean and organic, but I found out that a lot of the things I was eating were very high glycemic index and were essentially spiking my sugars and causing the hormone cascade. Things like dried fruits, whole grains, and even a lot of the whole grain substitutes, such as bean pasta. When I learned about this, and went back and checked on a lot of my favorite foods, I was shocked! Just one serving of the bean pasta I was scarfing down (typically eating what was technically two servings at a time) had 63 g of carbohydrates!! 🤦

Hannah Foroutan it’s all about the glycemic index. Anything that spikes your insulin ups your androgen levels producing more and thicker sebum, thus clogging pores and causing acne.
After researching which foods are high glycemic index foods and avoiding them as much as possible, along with dairy, and incorporating more fermented foods my skin has done a 180! Hope you can find improvement!

You are great Dr Lim, thank you so much. I have been researching for my 15 year old son who broke out 3 months exactly after a bad tibia fracture which left him unable to do all the sports he was used to doing for months. Saw a dermatologist and came out feeling very deflated. I was convinced that my son’s broken leg was part of the cause of the acme due to stress and cortisol (he was in a lot of pain and then the frustration of being inactive). The dermatologist saw us for 15 minutes max, said it was nothing to do with the broken leg, diet had little or no impact and then prescribed antibiotics saying glibly that it is unlikely work and you’ll have to go on accutane as he is getting scarring yet did not mention how to help with scarring or what could be done to help later. A very deflating and demoralising experience. Thank goodness for people like you, sharing experience and knowledge to genuinely help others. 😊

There is nothing worse when you have a social event, date or something important to attend to and everyday is basically just stressing yourself out. Making sure your skin doesn’t break out before that day! 😭 then it gets worse because you’re stressing out more!

Thank you so much forproviding information behind some of the treatments to these conditions. I cannot express how frustrating it is to go to specialist after specialist but they give you no information to enable you to make intelligent decisions broadly, but just give you a prescription that could be potentially bad for you. Appreciate you work!

Thank you for doing this!!! So sick and tired of the lies about acne and diet. I drank milk , ate cheese, and ate yogurt/kefir like a fiend as an adult and couldn’t understand why my acne just kept getting worse. Within months of giving up dairy my cystic acne went away. Then using Neostrata (heard about it from you) took away my tiny white heads and blackheads. My skin is wonderful now and I rarely have a break out.

I eat a lot of preservatives too so I guess I should stop that. Maybe fruits veggies rice and bit of meat a day with lots of water? Haven’t tried it yet so I’ll try it

For 6 straight weeks, I changed my diet to only sardines, salmon, water, and fruits. That's literally the only thing I ate, believe it or not.. my acne changed dramatically. It got so much better. Trust me when I say this. Eat a lot of omega 3 fatty acids.. cut down on the dairy, carbs and sodium. I also take fish oil with my accutane to help with my daily epa intake. Diet has a connection guys!!

The Acne Cure book isn’t a diet book. It teaches a ‘program’ to follow using Salicylic Acid, Glycolic, BP, ice/cold and whatever else. Talks about the different types of acne, etc. Educational enough for the typical acne sufferer who doesn’t have an understanding of acne and skincare.

Finally it seems like i found a real dermatologist and i saying this because most of the doctors promise to the people "their products" making miracles for acnee just because they wanna do bussines than to help for real.
Guys stop believe in their stories here's is a real doctors who already said that.
Man good bless you for hard work and we all thank you for being so honest with us.
In this life not only the money matters we are human being at the end and nothing it's coming with us after we pass away belive me.
The only thing what truly matter is to be respectuos with the others to help others people without benefits taking and after we leave this world peoples to remembering in their minds we were good people that's the only thing important.
    Bless you all !

More and more this makes sense to me! I really didn’t have the cases that can be seen related to accutane, I had recurring pimples that hurt but maybe 5 or 6. I went to a dermatologist and she prescribed accutane right off the bat. I thought it was a bit much since I hadn’t tried anything else before.

  • @steff.5580

I had pimples when I was a teenager.Although they were never really deep and painful, I went to a dermatologist because they were bothering me. She gave me Roaccutane (pills) and I was inspired enough to read the prospect before taking them. That thing scared me so badly that I never took them and, needless to say, never visited her again.

    • @dearbrothers7580

Literally every drug has some terrible side effects, even something as innocent as ibuprofen!

    • @steff.5580
      @steff.5580 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@dearbrothers7580 Of course all drugs have side effects and you always compare the costs and benefits. However, your comparison is not fair because the side effects of Roaccutane are more severe than those of Ibuprofen (e.g. irritation and dry skin vs. stomach pain for 1 in 10 people, respectively). There's a reason why I can get Ibuprofen without a prescription but not Roaccutane. For me, these costs outweighed the benefit of clearing my occasional pimples. The dermatologist should have known better than directly prescribing me such a strong treatment without trying any other topical treatment in advance.

    • @dearbrothers7580
      @dearbrothers7580 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Laura F. Yeah I agree with you there, accutane should never be the 1st option to mild-moderate acne. I guess for people with severe acne the benefits outweigh the costs.

Thank you so much for sharing this invaluable knowledge. I struggled with cystic acne for years and convinced that the issue was from within, I eliminated lactose from my diet and all my acne disappeared. Humans aren't designed to digest lactose, and especially women as the hormones present in mass-produced milk interfere and disrupt our endocrine system, thus producing acne. My brain fog, bloating, IBS symptoms and acne has completely gone since I kicked dairy to the curb... Almond or oat milk serves as a great substitute for it too.
