The worst is when people say “wash your face more often” as if acne vulgaris isn’t a legitimate medical condition and just something that plagues dirty unhygienic people who don’t know how to clean themselves properly
@@maenad1231 You're right! In some cases, like mine, it has the opposite effect! By over-exfoliating the skin with frequent washes, I removed the natural oils too fast which lead to a painful overproduction of the oils below the skin. I've found washing the bedsheets more often helps.
Yes Dr. Maxfield! “Drink more water to cure acne” is probably one of the most annoying and offensive things people can say. I think because it’s the assumption that you must have acne because you’re not eating healthy/clean.
this! I've had a very healthy whole foods diet plus drinking at least a half gallon of water per day for the past 3 years. So being told to maybe change my diet or drink more water literally felt offensive as if I wasn't already putting in so much effort to try and be healthy
It's kinda annoying and funny when some people immediately tell me to stop eating chocolate, dairy and drink more water when I complain about my acne. Annoying because like I have never heard that before. Funny because I like the look on their face when I tell them I barely eat chocolate or chocolate containing products in the first place and am mildly lactose intolerant.
I swear if I had a penny for every time someone told me to drink more water to get rid of my acne!!! There’s so many other things that go into it and my acne hasn’t stopped after puberty but it has changed and I’ve come to terms with having acne at times as an adult because it shouldn’t be shameful.
Don't lose hope. I wasn't able to get my acne under control until almost 40. Your hormones will keep changing. Do try Differin! It's the only product that actually stopped my hormonal breakouts. Also, use a soap-free cleanser 👍
@@Madamchief I actually have been working with a derm! I’m on retin-A. Honestly idk if period time acne will be going away any time soon (I’m in my 20s) but I’m much happier with my skin and I’ll take a few painful pimples over a bunch all on my face.
@@kb01999 give it some time. It's taken several years of consistent treatment for my skin to finally look and feel "normal". I will eventually have to work on the texture because of scarring though 😒
its amazing how much I was judged for my own acne despite trying everything to reduce it. People can be so cruel and gullible believing these myths ugh
Yes! And trying to give you "good advice". Like, you need to wash your face. Uh, I DO WASH MY FKN FACE!. lol. I have heard it all. It's like, don't you think I have heard all of this and have tried it all, too? People are so cruel with their ignorance.
My 22 yo daughter suffered with horrible acne for years. It was heartbreaking to see her suffer to the point of laying in bed crying, refusing to go to school or out in public at all. After three dermatologists and several different treatments the last dermatologist is the one who finally got it right. The first one prescribed doxycycline, a cream for her face and a clindamycin foam wash because she had it really bad on shoulders and upper back also. Her faced cleared up for about a month and then seemed to break out even worse. The wash did clear up the acne on her shoulders and upper back and she’s not had since in those areas. Second one said she had overactive sweat glands. I don’t remember what was prescribed but she said if that didn’t work then the next step would be a type of laser treatment. She explained the procedure would be to apply a cream to her face and then use like a laser light that will activate the cream and paralyze the sweat glands. The initial treatment worked again for like a month and then stopped working. My daughter didn’t feel like it was overactive sweat glands so went on to the third dermatologist. He prescribed Accutane and she has not had a break out since. At the age of 20 she paid $800 to a dermatologist to have all the scars treated and just the one treatment removed all the scars. I do not remember the name of the treatment but it was an invasive one not just a topical cream or gel. I love that she no longer has to deal with the acne or scars. She is such a beautiful young lady with or without acne/scars but she could not see it and was so depressed over it and in turn I would feel like a let her down. I had many times I cried in my room seeing how it effected her to the point of depression. Well, this comment is getting too long. Just wanted to point out that it took three dermatologists to finally get results. I don’t know why and I don’t believe it should. Just thankful that we found the right one at the end. Also, wanted to point out that truly severe acne can have severe psychological and emotional impact on the person. Sometimes people do not have the means to see a dermatologist. My daughter started suffering from the horrible acne around 12 I believe. It wasn’t until around 16 that I had insurance & could take her to a dermatologist. So, believe me, when I say……..when it’s that severe most have already tried everything possible other than burning his/her face off and the last thing they want is for anyone, other than a professional, telling them what to try and/or do.
@anitamichelle04 - I must must tell you - you are an amazing mother. Just showing so much compassion and love to your daughter and feeling her pain. ❤️ I remember how my parents actually blamed me that I must be putting something on my face to get acne - because they never had it in their life. That was tougher for me to deal than acne. So god bless you for being a good mom.
@@MultiAurinko Thank you! I am far from a perfect mother but I do try very hard to be the best one I can be. I am sorry you went through what you did & did not have understanding parents. I know, as you said, that had to be hard to deal with.
Thank you for this! I would love to see a video about acne post-30s. I’m 40 and my skin is still problematic. I think there’s even more stigma and embarrassment when you’re older and have acne because it’s expected in your teens and twenties but not when you’re older.
Azelaic acid is definitely an underrated ingredient for acne prone skin! Salicylic acid worked alright for me on active acne however azelaic acid is helping prevent breakouts to some extent and also working on the acne scars. Loving the ordinary 's Azelaic acid!
I'd so love to see a video like that too! I spent so long thinking I had an oily skin type because I had terrible acne. I used to make my skin so sore thinking it was oily and I needed to dry it all up when it was really the opposite. I put myself through useless pain because I had never known dry skin and acne even happen together. I can't really use acne treatments other than accurate (which was so helpful) because they are mostly targeted at oily skin! I've had horrible painful acne but always feel left out of discussion because my skin is dry!
I 100% think that sunlight improves my acne! In the summer I’m outside ALL THE TIME. I wear sunscreen to still protect my skin but I swear summer is a magic time for my skin because it’s so much clearer!
Me to! I’m a Norwegian so not that much sunlight since rain, snow etc and when i went to Italy it all went away, some visible pores but that’s all, I had no breakouts or anything, I didn’t even have my cleanser on just a sunscreen. When I went back home were it was raining again, and after a week I had break outs again.
Thank you SO much for talking about dairy being a contributor to cystic acne! I've had so many dermatologists just prescribe pills, creams, lotions, etc to no avail. It wasn't until I went dairy free that I truly found relief! I hope more studies are done in the future.
I got reallyyy bad acne for the first time ever back in 2020 and thanks to you guys I tried adapalene a few months ago. My skin is now so so much better… thank you guys so much!
I'm 55 and just this past month started taking care of my aging acne prone skin! I've learned so much from watching y'all! I have thick curly hair and put hair oil on each day. Since I've been cleansing properly and using Differen along with a complete new regimen today is the first day I can remember not having at least one blemish on my face! Thanks for the info!
I never had an acne problem until I switched birth control to the arm implant. It was horrible! I would cry looking at myself in the mirror and took the implant out. It took my skin like 2 years to recuperate so I was low key glad we had to wear masks to cover my face. 😩
Adapalene has changed my life... It's like magic. I'm so grateful to you two for introducing it to me. (Apologies for two comments.) ETA: Cambridge Dictionary says that "thrust" (in this sense) means "the main idea, subject, or opinion that is discussed or written about." So it's not necessarily dirty!
@@80sgirlwhamduran It was quick. I bought some for both my 14-year-old and myself (I have rosacea and he has teenage acne that was starting to get concerning and he was becoming super self-conscious). We started with the CeraVe retinol serum that they recommended and moved on to the La Roche Posay Effaclar Adapalene gel. Both of our faces cleared within a week of starting the CeraVe. It worked like magic, seriously. Once the skin adapted to the CeraVe we started the adapalene. We now go back and forth between the two products. Neither of us has changed any other part of our skincare regimen other than the addition of the retinols.

My skin was so bad in my teenage years. Dried out from covering my whole face in benzoyl peroxide, but I still refused moisturizers because my skin was still so greasy.
Broo i used to rely heavily on my mom for help treating my acne in my teen years and she would buy me benzoyl peroxide but would never buy me moisturizer. So everyday i would dry out my face with that stuff and would wonder why my face was an oil slick in less than an hour. And i was doing this for a couple years…now i never take advice from my mom with skin health. And the annoying part too was my mom uses moisturizer everyday for her routine but never once thought about getting me moisturizer.

All the myths out there about acne is so toxic! I'm 28 years old and I suddenly broke out a year ago with severe cystic acne, i tried everything and it didnt help! Now I finally am on accutane and it's making a huge difference! I wish I would've just went to a dermatologist sooner and maybe I wouldn't have so much scarring.
Can you do a video about melanated skin? What products work best, details about sunlight or the best sunscreen to use, what different skin conditions look on darker skin than on paler skin. I just want yall to go into detail
I'm a victim of the "oily skin types should not moisturize" belief back when I was still in high school bc of my mom. Had really bad acne that would not go away and very, VERY oily skin, same as my mom. I found out that we do indeed need to moisturize and not only that, but that there are oils that help oily skin, which sounded counterintuitive but works very well. Told my mom about this and made her try moisturizer and a tiny bit of sunflower oil and she's thanking me for it now. My skin is waaaaaay better than it was and much less oily.
@@Marie-jz1qw this is really why educating yourself about skincare is important bc it can have really bad consequences. thankfully, resources can be easily accessed now.

Can you guys do a video on closed comedones? I’ve been dealing with them for the past 3 years and haven’t found anything that truly works, a video on this would be truly helpful!
I'm 24 now. I've been to various skin-exorcists since I was 18. The one I went to when I was 21 told me my acnes will stop once I hit 30. My aunt used to go the same one & she was 38 at the time. I asked her if the guy told her her acnes will stop once she's 40. He didn’t. Guess he just stops giving false hopes after a while 😒
My youngest son battled acne for years. Took him to the doc, and he prescribed Accutane. Poof. It was gone if a few months. The lesions have receded in the last few years, and you'd never know he had acne.

Just wanted to clarify for some ED viewers, food has no moral value, pizza isn’t necessary bad if it is enjoyed in moderation and this applies to all foods 💜
Finally someone talking about B12 supplements being linked to acne, I experienced this and no one I knew could relate but I knew it was a trigger when I had nutritional yeast, and fortified plant milks.
Fried food has different amount of trans fats depending on the frying oil (its oxidative stability), and trans fat does cause inflammation. I still do believe frying cause acne unless you use oil ranked highest in oxidative stability.
exactly inflammatory acne is your bodies way of getting the crap u put in your body out and I think hydrogenated oils/trans fats contribute heavily to it. healthy oils like extra virgin olive and avocado oil are much better for us
@@debutchi hydrogenated is definitely bad. The uncertainty is in cooking oil. I don’t think the study mentioned in the video has not done any testing regarding that. Many vegetable oils are mostly unsaturated fat, if its omega 3 : 6 ratio is high then it is good to eat (at least cold). When it is heated, unsaturated fat has much weaker chemical bonds than saturated fat and breaks into trans fat unless there is antioxidants to prevent the oil from breaking down. Oilve and avocado oil are both good choices (high oxidative stability and they are many many studies backing this up). Even though there are many other healthy oil like flaxseed oil, they should not be heated. High temp with the wrong oil or oils high in omega 6 both cause inflammation.
@@debutchi inflammatory acne is absolutely NOT your bodies way of getting the crap u put in your body out. Your liver and kidneys are what is getting rid off waste material through your bowel movements et al. Please don't spread misinformation.
I went to my derm and he told me to not use sunscreen because it contained oil and would make my oily skin worse. I'm so glad I watched this video because I knew that sounded really odd, going to request a change in derms now, thanks for the information!
That advice would be excruciatingly painful for people with pale skin. I use CeraVe SPF 30 AM + PM moisturizer, and it's significantly helped my acne. I'm glad you didn't follow his recommendation.
So this is a question/coincidences I’ve noticed. Since I got vaccinated (Moderna) my acne FLARED up to the point where it was as, if not, more worse than when I hit puberty. I think part of it was me wearing a mask, but after shutdown I wasn’t working or going out to the point where I needed to wear a mask too often. The reason I think my acne flare ups may of partly been because of the vaccine was because my menstrual cycle also got really out of whack. It was always consistent up until a month or so after I got vaccinated. My cycle and my acne have gone back to normal now but did take about 9ish months to do so. Both normalized around the same time too. I’ve talked with a few of my girlfriends and they too have gone through the same issue with their cycles. So I don’t know if these two are related or not, but I was just wondering if you’ve heard this before or if you’ve noticed a trend like this since the pandemic hit? Thanks for your videos, I’ve learned so much since my flare ups and your videos calmed me down and helped me walk through how to heal my skin.
And when your mom tells you not to pick at your face or pop pimples, listen to her!!!! At the time it may seem like you’d rather have a scab for 3 days than fight a breakout for 2 weeks but it really does cause scarring and pitting after a while. Maybe not right away but years of popping definitely affects the texture of your skin.
Yes! Thanks for this video. I never had much acne until perimenopause! I was so miserable. Deep, cystic acne. (Perimenopause: the gift that keeps on giving!) Nothing worked until I went to see a dermatologist--and within 2 weeks I had noticeable results. So one more myth I'd like to bust--if you have really bad acne, more than 2-3 zits/month for months at a time, bad enough that you're in pain all the time and just really miserable, don't try to fix it at home with home remedies or over-the-counter products. See a dermatologist. It'll be cheaper in the long run too, especially if you have insurance! If your acne can be treated with OTC products, a good derm will tell you so! Also, Dr M and Dr S--would you include the citation of the study you mentioned where study participants talk about the most common acne myths?
Please put together a doctorly calendar. YES! Images of the both of you and derm tips for the month. I would totally hang it up. Btw.. May is my birthday month. 😘
Hi Dr Shah and Dr Maxfield! Could you do a video recommending products for dehydrated skin? I have oily but dehydrated skin and I'm sure it would help many people out there struggling with the same issue too!
Let me put y’all on. Drink 2 to 3 cups of decaffeinated green tea, it’s really cheap to buy and literally helps clear skin in about a week. Great for acne prone skin, drinking green tea helps clear out you stomach and impurities. You have to eat a lot more healthy as well
Currently in estie school and learning a lot of these things but it’s so helpful to come home and listen to these videos on top of my studying. It really helps me retain everything I’m learning plus a little more. 😊 Thank you!!
You should do a video on why Niacinamide is breaking you out. I’ve tried so many products with Niacinamide because everyone talks about how good it is but every time I use it makes my skin break out so bad and the when I stop using my skin starts clearing up. I don’t understand how Niacinamide is so good but makes my skin terrible.
What is your take on full body acne? I’ve always had it from the shoulders to the knees and my face has been clear my whole life. My arms and thighs are the worst. I think a myth to bust is that acne only affects the face.
My adult acne is directly related to food. After years of trial and error, accutane treatments, going vegan or keto, I've found that a whole food plant based diet is the best for my health and skin. I do not consume dairy which is a major cause of my acne and severe menstrual pains or gluten which causes my eczema and contributes slightly to my acne. I avoid sugar at all costs despite an occasional treat. For skin care, lately I use nicinamide for mornings, retinol for evenings and hyaluronic acid in face wash and toner for mornings and evenings. Sunscreen always. I'm seeing good results but it's still a hard journey, one day something works then the next day it stops. Exhausting trying to figure it all out but here we are, trying our best on this seemingly lonely path. Thanks you doctors and all the best to everyone trying to figure it out.
Could you please talk about layering sunscreens? Is it bad to layer physical and mineral on top of each other? What is the deal between avobenzone and zinc oxide? Please! Love you guys. Thank you SO MUCH for all the AMAZING free content.
Dietitian here! I agree the research is lacking. There is a liver-skin connection. If the liver is not functioning well in phase one or two liver detox skin issues can be a symptom. We also see that dirty genes cause skin issues.
I got too many acne all of a sudden in my face. I went to dermatologist. It did work but I started eating healthy food and my skin started to get clear fastly. Recently I started eating junk food and I started to get acne again. So I do think diet effects our acne.
Staying hydrated is important and avoiding cola. I used to drink a lot of water and my skin was very clear I lost weight and followed a balanced diet so dairy but over doing it, maybe think of water it can't hurt you unless you drink too much moderation.
Why do women get more hormonal acne where only men would get facial hair (besides peach fuzz) ? Wouldn't the change in sebum production be stronger for men's bigger hair follicles, therefore increasing the risk of inflammation from infection there? I will acknowledge that some women get those pesky, thick hairs but I'm speaking generally.
Please do a skincare video for pregnant/ breastfeeding moms! I love all your videos but can't use some of these products because I'm breastfeeding and will be for a while still. I am desperate to take care of my skin as much as possible during this time but just don't know how!
Entirely my experience-> So I’ve had acne since the age of 10, and I’ve had it for a decade. I still have it. It’s deep cystic acne that feel inflamed with burning sensations all the time (my flare ups). Finally figured out my problem. My gut health. I’ve begun a gluten free diet->flare ups decreased. Cut dairy and soy out-> flare ups decreased. I had severe cystic acne so at this point it’s just average deep cystic acne (basically I was previously above average in how bad it was). I still had very visible acne, hurting my self esteem a lot. Then it clicked. Sugar. Whenever I consumed sugar, at any level, but especially loads of it bc sugar is highly addictive, I saw immense flare ups like no other. It was sooooo painful. CUT👏🏼SUGAR👏🏼OUT👏🏼 you don’t need it babe. Sugar from vegetables are the most you should ever need, you can survive perfectly fine without it, but you will just have to cut the sugar addiction. I say this bc most food in the American diet is highly processed and have waaayy too much sugar. Period. And yes its important to drink a lot of water bc constipation and lead to deep, huge cysts. Definitely in my case. When you have toxic poop just sitting in ur gut, your body is going to show you a visible sign that something is wrong.
@@sonyred3844 Honestly in my case the only thing that causes flare ups, if I consume too much of it, is dairy. I can eat gluten and soy. Moreover, soy is a great protein source and I never noticed anything on my skin when I consumed it over a long period. I was diagnosed with rosacea and I also had neurodermatitis since I was a child. What really helps me are supplements which contain biotin and zinc, but avoid supplements with unnecessary amounts of additives. Food alone did not make a huge change for me. I was very strict about my diet, but that alone was not enough, because I was already experiencing painful inflammations. At first I used medical cremes and for a while it worked, but after a few months I noticed another flare up. Afterwards, I actually took rather mild antibiotics which a dermatologist recommend me. At the beginning I was a bit nervous because side effects can occur, but in my case the pills worked. I did experience a bit of a side effect after I was done with the antibiotics, but my dermatologist helped me through that and my skin luckily jumped back. I was relieved since I was a bit desperate. After my skin finally healed I only washed my face with water in the morning and evening. Sometimes, I use a gentle foam cleanser around my nose and the corners of my cheeks, if I notice anything. And I only use a moisturizer for my face (actually only for my cheeks because they tend to be a little dry) after showering. I use the facial creme of the brand Allergika. It is a little heavier, but it works for me since I do apply very small amounts. What I would recommend is to eat as much protein as possible (I try to opt for lots of plants based protein sources, but also consume fish and sometimes meat since they’re also important) and also do not cut too many foods from your diet. Some people also drink ginger shots or vegetable juices, but I prefer herbal teas. Especially bitter herbal teas are wonderful. They might not taste that amazing, but they can help greatly against excessive oil production and also regulate inflammation. The more bitter foods and teas you consume the better. Also, I personally do not drink alcohol, nor do I smoke and at the very beginning I tried to limit my caffeine intake. What you can try are caffeine free coffee brands, but take a closer look at additives and avoid brands as such. Lastly, I can say that your bowel movement can give you a clue about what your gut needs, but sometimes you might have a regular bowel movement and then trying to avoid foods, if they do not show any changes on your skin either, might be unnecessary. Eating two or three meals a day is great and snacking is also fine in my opinion. Just don’t eat too much added sugar and generally too much of anything. Even if you’d only eat salads and vegetables, without adding proteins, carbs, and healthy fats and a bit of seasoning (i.e. a dash of salt, a bit of pepper, some paprika flakes or some mint leaves, etc.) your body will begin to lack important nutritions. Don’t starve yourself and I wish you the best of luck and I hope that you will feel better about things soon again. That’s it.
I've had acne since I was 13 and still have acne prone skin at 38. I think a lot of my bad acne was due to the products I was using. I started using Cerave face wash, body soap, moisturizing cream, and now their retinol and it definitely decreased the frequency and severity of my acne. I definitely have worse acne the week before and the week after my period, I'm not on hormonal contraception so it's definitely hormonal related
Was thinking I got adult acne. Actually I wasn't, I was allergic to the resins in my water softener that contained high iodine. I broke out on my face, jawline, chest, stomach, and back. Found out after my water softener system broke down within two week my face and body cleared out. Installed a new water softener in after two months, I broke out again. Shut it off, my face and body was cleared from acne again. Just another reason why you broke out.

I have finally cleared my acne at 36 years old which was the inflammatory/hormonal type. The 2 things that flare it like crazy are sugar and stress. I've been dairy and gluten free for 3 years now, which didn't make that much of a difference to my acne, but did almost completely get rid of my eczema (along with the correct topicals). Micellar water (preferred over oil cleansers) 2. Is Clinical Cleansing Complex 3. Avene thermal spring water - calms the skin, rehydrates after cleansing and allows my next product to penetrate more 4. Skinbetter Science AlphaRet overnight cream. (Alternate between the original and the intensive which has more glycolic acid.) Both have the same amount of retinoid (Ethyl lactyl retinoate). This cream is amaaaaazing. Worth every penny. 5. Those doctors must have confused the oils consumed from the delish/greasy food with the oils secreted by the body. I think we are in a much better place now 😂.
@@agevivoku Nah, the beans have been roasted and processed heavily, not to mention the added sugars and saturated fat content. If you want a true antioxidant boost you should try raw cacao on oatmeal with some blueberries. - and with water instead of milk

"Eating greasy/fatty foods are acne-causing." I was actually having this conversation with someone earlier after watching a video of a very "internet-famous" doctor who loves giving "expert advice" on a myriad of issues (that he's not an expert on whatsoever) while pedaling pro-keto talking-points. If acne can be affected by hormones, and if diet can affect hormones, then yes, diet can absolutely cause acne. With that said, we also have to differentiate correlation from causation. A lot of people that have poor diets also tend to have sub-optimal health-related practices as a whole, and this especially extends to things like sleep, hygiene, micronutrient intake, etc., so it'd be pretty easy to find/form a flawed study where the participants that naturally eat Fast Food/snack all day have worse acne w/o accounting for the other factors at play.
Well fried foods and fast foods are high in omega 6 which is very inflammatory and can clog pores/cause blackheads, that’s why eating salmon and getting a good amount of omega 3s improves skin function and pore balance.
I definitely get hormonal acne. I've got it almost completely under control after a year of starting and adjusting skincare. I get a couple tiny tiny tiny non-hormonal whiteheads on my nose a couple times a week and they go away within 48 hours, and I still get some sebaceous filaments. But the pimples on my jawline and chin have been gone for months and my PIH is gone. I'm working on textured scars now with weekly OTC peels and a mild OTC retinoid, and it's been about 3 months, but I expect it to take up to a year to see substantial results without in-office procedures. I'm really happy though. My skin tone is so even now that I get compliments on my "smooth" skin, even though I still have a lot of textured scars from acne and chicken pox. They're just less obvious because none of them are red, hyperpigmented, or hypopigmented anymore. THAT SAID, my acne was never severe, just moderate, and it responded well to home treatment. Don't feel bad about yourself if you can't do what I did. If you need to see a derm or use prescriptions, or even if you still struggle after all that, that's your story, not mine. Don't compare your skin to anyone else's!
I would love to hear you guys talk about Acne Inversa (Hidradenitis Supperativa) since it affects so many people yet its not talked about much! And some doctors don't even know about the condition either!
Stress triggers my acne. I noticed the more stressed I am the worse my acne would get. I never change my diet or anything. Just more stressed, more acne. Less stress, less acne.
Also reg. food and acne. Stress? When you were on the fries (I’m thinking how many combos have fries) were you stressed? Stress eating? Lower mood, more unhealthy food. Totally projecting 🥲
Anyone who says acne stops when you're over puberty is either misinformed or a liar 😂

The amount of times my mother has said “it’s because your not drinking water” 🤦🏽♂️. I’m sending her this video….
The worst is when people say “wash your face more often” as if acne vulgaris isn’t a legitimate medical condition and just something that plagues dirty unhygienic people who don’t know how to clean themselves properly
😂😂😂
@@maenad1231 You're right! In some cases, like mine, it has the opposite effect! By over-exfoliating the skin with frequent washes, I removed the natural oils too fast which lead to a painful overproduction of the oils below the skin. I've found washing the bedsheets more often helps.
@@jos0874 SAME!
Same when i complain to mom about dandruff and she says" u didn't rince your hair well 🤪"
Yes Dr. Maxfield! “Drink more water to cure acne” is probably one of the most annoying and offensive things people can say. I think because it’s the assumption that you must have acne because you’re not eating healthy/clean.
You can’t cure acne but water does help with hydration from water helps with overall health
@A C “ water helps with hydration and overall health” that’s kind common knowledge
Also there's different type of acne
I swear if I had a penny for every time someone told me to drink more water to get rid of my acne!!! There’s so many other things that go into it and my acne hasn’t stopped after puberty but it has changed and I’ve come to terms with having acne at times as an adult because it shouldn’t be shameful.
I was told this one too as a teenager, but it didn't work I had to use differin adalapelene recently and my skin is bad.
My skin is better.

I drank water to help with acne. Found out it didn’t help with the pimples but definitely made my skin naturally glowy and brighter
Yeah because it hydrates ur skin
its amazing how much I was judged for my own acne despite trying everything to reduce it. People can be so cruel and gullible believing these myths ugh

So true. I still feel ashamed when I breakout extensively sometimes. Often cancel dates, bc I am scared people would judge me.

I 100% think that sunlight improves my acne! In the summer I’m outside ALL THE TIME. I wear sunscreen to still protect my skin but I swear summer is a magic time for my skin because it’s so much clearer!
Same! For me i think its because during winter my skin barrier is wayyy weaker due to the cold weather & the dry heating air inside.
maybe try a vitamin d cream during winter then
Its also becouse of the sea, it helps heal acne
It's because the Sun dries up the pimple/acne and potentially kills the bacteria on it as well

My skin was so bad in my teenage years. Dried out from covering my whole face in benzoyl peroxide, but I still refused moisturizers because my skin was still so greasy.
You have to use moisturizes If u dont do that ur skin will overproduce oil
This was me exactly. I also used straight up tea tree oil for a while 😭😭💀
Broo i used to rely heavily on my mom for help treating my acne in my teen years and she would buy me benzoyl peroxide but would never buy me moisturizer. So everyday i would dry out my face with that stuff and would wonder why my face was an oil slick in less than an hour.

Truth
Shoulda talked more about "fungal acne" because finding out about that was a game changer. I know it's not real acne but the people need to know!
I’ve heard so many other women go through this same thing. Some of their cycles stopped completely. 😳
I have heard this as well… it’s so sad to see what has been happening.
Correlation does not equal causation.

The way they look at eachother
I‘m currently giving that a shot. I started around a week ago. I hope I‘ll see results after two or three months🤝.
@@Sara-mu9wiupdate? This is a very similar situation to me
@@sonyred3844 Honestly in my case the only thing that causes flare ups, if I consume too much of it, is dairy. That’s it.
Looking forward for a " Fry guy at McDonald's" video 🙂
I’m dead 😂😂 Dr. Maxfield said “the main thrust of things” and Dr. Shah’s response was hilarious lmao
Can you please talk about post accutane treatments, maintenance and scars
Azelaic acid is amazing. I use the one by the Ordinary
You guys are so informative. Thank you!!
I’m glad I found you two! You’re now my favorite video to watch, love the chemistry between you & you can be so funny! I’ve been blessed to never have acne but I have aged skin & there are so many choices of products to use & how to use them! Love you two!😂🥰
Why don’t you guys have a video on acne Purging and side effects of skincare routine.??
Thats more important than just talking about acne being a dermatologist.
We need to know how to manoeuvre ourselves around products and what to do and what not to do whilst going through Acne Purging that could put people into a depressive state.
Just ordered the Doctorly favs collection, so excited to try it out!
Please come back to update us!!!
@@Doctorly a month later of using the SkinFix barrier restoring gel cream daily and I can say it has worked wonders for me. I have oily and an olive skin tone, & am dealing with a lot of acne scars from constantly using masks during the pandemic. Slowly my skin is healing, I feel more confident with my bare face now! When I 1st started using the product I used to apply it only once a day, so I would recommended to make sure you use it twice daily to get the best result. Thanks Doctorly! :)
172 cms, 38 kgs, tanning bed 3 times a week 🤦🏻♀️. That was me at 19 yo, already genetically petite and thin AF after a year and a half eating nothing but steamed meat, fish, vegetables and fruit because "cut dairy, fried stuff, any kind of oil..." Meanwhile, my acne was worsening. Thanks to my mom (as always, actually) who had simple common sense and looked for another derm. I still feel something inside me saying 😈NOOOO😈 when I try to enjoy my handmade aztec cocoa drink😋 *THANK YOU, BOSSES* 🧛🏻♀️🖤
The skincare routine that works for me personally (prone to acne, eczema and mid 30s) is:
Am:
1. IS Clinical Cleansing Complex
2. IS Clinical C eye serum - 7.5% Ascorbic acid used on whole face, stronger is too much for me
3. Avene comedomed - silymarin and silica
4. Paula's azelaic acid booster - azelaic and Salicylic acid
5. La roche posay dermallergo fluid- calming peptide and probiotic
6. Colorescience flex spf 50 - tinted for prevention of hyperpigmentation with high PA rating (anti aging)
Pm:
1. Micellar water (preferred over oil cleansers)
2. Is Clinical Cleansing Complex
3. Avene thermal spring water - calms the skin, rehydrates after cleansing and allows my next product to penetrate more
4. Skinbetter Science AlphaRet overnight cream. (Alternate between the original and the intensive which has more glycolic acid.) Both have the same amount of retinoid (Ethyl lactyl retinoate). This cream is amaaaaazing. Worth every penny.
5. Paula's azelaic acid booster
6. La roche posay dermallergo fluid
7. La roche posay cicaplast baume B5
8. Vaseline on lips and perioral area which is prone to dryness
Hope this helps someone! Thanks for the video! :)
Some good products there
I'd love to see you guys make a video about skincare (with an emphasis on acne) for kids. My ten year old is going through puberty and getting breakouts and I feel terrible. I started using Cerave products lately to get my own acne under control, but I don't know what is safe for her to use since she's so young.
A good diet can help a lot
You guys always make such great vids w info + comedy 😂 Loved the “main thrust” of the video 😂😂
I'm 50 and I *still* deal with acne! I'm convinced I will still be battling it when I'm very old.
Change your diet. Most acne is food related
@@TreeGirlDesigns did you watch the video? The doctors say that's not true.
@@jrebecca0195, no, they said sugar and food high in glycemic index can trigger acne.
@@jrebecca0195 they said false for greasy food but noted high sugar and high glycemic foods trigger acne. Plus they added that they aren't enough studies on acne and food and people should monitor to see which foods might be triggering their acne
One cool thing I guess aside from all the suffering- acne afflicted skin ages slower thanks to the production of oils
When my sister was a teen in the 60’s she had cystic acne. The Dermatologist told her: No chocolate, chips, fries, pizza, dill pickles and any fried foods. Not good news for a teen.
And now its even proven that chocolate with high cocoa percentage helps your skin due to the high antioxidant content 😂
Those doctors must have confused the oils consumed from the delish/greasy food with the oils secreted by the body. I think we are in a much better place now 😂.
Pickles? 🤨 I hadn't heard that one.
@@agevivoku Nah, the beans have been roasted and processed heavily, not to mention the added sugars and saturated fat content. If you want a true antioxidant boost you should try raw cacao on oatmeal with some blueberries. - and with water instead of milk
I think it's more that the condition our skin is in is usually related to our gut health, cutting down on oily foods does help but it's not a way to completely remove acne as there are also other factors that contribute to developing it 🤔
THIS VIDEO GIVES ME SO MANY ANSWERS THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH
Hey docs! Have you ever made a video about sweating and antiperspirants? (if they're bad or like myth busting) The moment I get out of the house to commute it's like I'm a walking dish sponge that had just been used after lunch 😭 I almost want to get checked if I have hyperhidrosis.
Hii i get that too! I live in France and use Etiaxil maybe you can try to find something similar ! It really help with the amount of sweat and the smell
Great video Drs! Thank you for sharing a discount code that is always the bestest. I’d like to hear more about how different tea ingredients improve skin and /or improve acne. Anything from green tea, white tea, rooibos, mint, and anything else missing from this list.
Thank you again!!
Cerave SA really does dry me out. I use it twice a week and on those days I am so much drier. La Roche Posay in the blue bottle is so good. Gentle and works well. Not going to lie- when I eat greasy food I feel greasy. I do not know why. Even Mayo and Peanut Butter I get greasy. Haha.
Sugar and fast food breaks me out for sure… what ever oil it is they using at them fast food places break me out.. cause when I eat fried food from home I don’t break out
hydrogenated oils cause inflammation, extra virgin olive and avocado oil are so much better for you
I used the skinfix spot treatment and it works wonders! And I have sensitive skin.
"Eating greasy/fatty foods are acne-causing."
I was actually having this conversation with someone earlier after watching a video of a very "internet-famous" doctor who loves giving "expert advice" on a myriad of issues (that he's not an expert on whatsoever) while pedaling pro-keto talking-points.
Don't compare your skin to anyone else's!
what did u change ur skin care to? i get whiteheads and have PIH
I’m nearly 30 and experiencing hormonal acne, always flares week 3 of my cycle. I’ve never had such bad breakouts in my life! So frustrating
I would love to hear you guys talk about Acne Inversa (Hidradenitis Supperativa) since it affects so many people yet its not talked about much! And some doctors don't even know about the condition either!
Or when people who never had acne have the audacity to comment on your skin… like we havent done anything to treat it 🙄🙄🙄
Stress triggers my acne. I noticed the more stressed I am the worse my acne would get. I never change my diet or anything. Just more stressed, more acne. Less stress, less acne.
Mine turned out to be a hybrid between acne and rosacea!!!! They put me on Soolantra and Topical Erythromycin. All gone!
We get so much knowledge about skincare ingredients from your videos..thank you so much to both of you Doctors😍❤️🔥🙌
Hi Doctors, great video as always. Do you have a video on oily skin care?. What are the best products to use
Hey, can you do a video for dry skin/ de hydrated skin.
Thanks
DOCS PLEASE MAKE A VIDEO TO GET RID OF WHITEHEADS
Also reg. food and acne. Stress? When you were on the fries (I’m thinking how many combos have fries) were you stressed? Stress eating? Lower mood, more unhealthy food. Totally projecting 🥲
