Even the most notorious online communities can do good. In this video, we'll talk about the unlikely story of the /r/atheism water tank donation to a village in Uganda. Despite the subreddit's smug, self-aggrandizing reputation, the community came together to raise money to build a water tank that would provide clean water to those need. We'll also look at the time when Reddit came together to donate pizzas to a children's hospital, and the "sad papaw" story, where a grandfather's lonely burger cookout went viral on Twitter. The internet rallied around him, and soon, he had thousands of people showing up for a burger at his next cookout. Of course, let's not forget about the infamous "Burger King Foot Lettuce" story, one that will send chills up your spine. All of these and more, when we look into what happens when Reddit does good.

That's what anonymity, i.e. absence of any concern for consequences does. Amplifying one's worst traits. And I'm by no means an exception to that, but for me it's limited to a tad harsher a tone in YT comments where I would most certainly be more "diplomatic" IRL, no death threats or similar.

Reddit doesn't seem to know any other form of charity than to overwhelm one random target with excessive amounts of donations with no sense of what's necessary or appropriate.
To be fair, in all those stories the targets have asked for donations and indeed got what they requested (and sometimes more).

The story of Hazel is very sad. She beat the cancer she was fighting at the time, but it returned and she passed four years after. Interesting thing, she was the daughter of an important figure on the staff of Star vs The Forces of Evil.
I went to fact check and her father, Aaron Hammersley, was one of the supervising producers/writers/storyboard artists/directors.
There's a memorial to Hazel in the end credits of the episode "Butterfly Follies", it's honestly really sad. Brought tears to my eyes.

It really is great that if enough people come together they can make such big impacts, some actually good like the donations towards the orphanage, some weird but ultimately funny like whenever anywhere releases a poll, and some where they get absolutely no payoff even remotely, like the One time everyone came together in EverQuest to kill a dragon. God I love the internet

The Papaw story reminded me of my grandmother, she passed away in the summer of 2018, but in many ways she was my second mother, because she took care of me when my mom was a single mom working to keep me happy and healthy. She was very influential to my life, and even after I moved 2000miles away, I stayed in contact with her, and even paid for her to come out and visit once back in 2016. I even flew out to see her before she passed away, we didn't have the greatest relationship, but I made sure she always knew that I loved her and appreciated her for everything.
The last one genuinely made me tear up a bit. I miss my grandfather so much man, it warmed my heart to see people come together for one day and express their love for their papaws.
'Despite the death threats, there was a lot of positivity going around.' Is a pretty good description of the internet.
