Formed in Dublin, 1969; Thin Lizzy are heralded as one of the finest hard rock bands to ever grace stages around the word. Led by lead bassist and vocalist Phil Lynott and famed for their incendiary live shows; Thin Lizzy are responsible for hits such as 'Whiskey in the Jar', 'The Boys are Back in Town', 'Jailbreak', 'Dancing in the Moonlight' and 'Cowboy Song'.

I'd say Thin Lizzy is probably the most underrated rock band ever. Considering Phil Lynott voice, band's melodies, unique instrumental arrangement, playing with distortion, harmonies, song writing etc. I think they deserve to be more recognized and their albums played more on radio stations.
I fully agree.
Totally overlooked internationally.
Incredible how Phil could sing and play the bass at the same time.
I listened to Thin Lizzy a lot back in the 70s because they had a few really great songs - like this one. But their problem IMO was that the quality of songs was a bit uneven. Too many not so great songs, in other words.
Definitely deserve more recognition. They're why I like iron maiden too. The story telling, the harmonies, great bass player. There just isn't enough music like this today. There are some bands that are part of the nwothm movement that are doing this.
I prefer the cult status
Who does not love Thin Lizzy? This is what Rock Music is all about. Rest In Piece Phil and thank you for the all the great memories and Dalymount Park, Dublin 1977. Support act Graham Parker and the Rumours, and a little unknown band called The Boomtown Rats! I had just turned 16 years old and that gig is still rated as the very best outdoor gig to this date, in Ireland at least!
That's a great song .better than boys are back..🎸🥁🎹 timeless RIP Phil ❤🙏
Don't believe a word for words are so easily spoken....lyrical gems from the lyrical master
Saw them twice live. Great live band
Yeah a great tune in 2019 a great solo 👍
The best lyrics ever.
Enjoy my rock music site..
Love u Philo.
Joe Fernandes mhmm...
“Live and Dangerous” = fantastic album! : ))
It contains fantastic compositions, but sorrowly the sound is a puzzle of studio takes. Still it's Rock History!
Saw them live..am old now but still rocks me
The most perfecr melodic rock band of all time, killer guitar playing and solos,,,,great songs,,arrangements,,,and lots of silver shiny stuff and learher gear,,,,ROCK band !!
Escutando em 2023!!!
The day of my Grandmother's funeral at which I was a pallbearer Thin Lizzy played a free gig in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens I was gutted for 2 reasons arrrgh.
when i was young and this came out i knew it was lizzy for me Now at 62 im still a lizzy fan
what a song man... grateful
1979 Black Rose brilliant The RDS Dublin that was the start for me and Eventually My Band The Heist played with Brian Downey in Slats in Caple Street Dublin
Fantastisch!!!!!!!
❤❤❤
Phil Lynnott gone but never forgotten beautiful sexy man
this intro reminds maiden and saxon, shure they influenced all these bands,Amazing Band
That solo peels your skin off but Phill’s soulful voice puts it back on..STUNNING and im not a rock fan as such
Don't get me wrong because Gary M and John S are where great Guitarists but I thought they always did their own thing and it was a bit like " hey look at me" For me, and just in my opinion and as a life long fan Scot and Brian were the best duo in Lizzy They just played off of each other with their own input and seemingly with no ego
Love Scott
I completely agree. Robbo's solos were always amazing but I also loved Scott's as well. He played some VERY tasty solos through this period.
Das was gut
Back when dudes walked the talk.
Robbo with the cigarette in his hand while he's playing the solo. Badass.
Legend
Love him but it's freshly lit for the shot. If he'd lit it at the start of the song it would have burnt down more ;-)
You guitarists out there, what is this guitar Robo is playing? Usually on a Gibson LP like all others, including Scott on his '73 Deluxe here... Just wondering? Thanx!
RIP Phil Lynott (August 20, 1949 - January 4, 1986), aged 36
You will be remembered as a legend.
I'm 61 now and still my favourite Lizzy song 🤘
Johnny The Fox Meets Jimmy The Weed
64. Ditto
same age,and same opinion.
Amen brother, 2m17s. of utter perfection... not a single superfluous note. The live version on L&D is even better.
I'm 26 and just discovered Thin Lizzy. My life is gonna change forever!
Yeh all the great singers and musicians are gone now but there is plenty on line to listen to, RIP Phil and Gary 🎸🎤💕
Shut up dude he's 26 and your saying that
You very lucky person, you just clicked on the the very best rocking band of all times, I know because I got to see them many times for over 8 years, I also got to see many other very great bands but Thin Lizzy & Rory Gallagher were the very best of all
Fuck im 31 and thought metal started in the 80's the riffage in this song is so good
@@mikeh4972 You just struck gold/oil/the worlds most prestigious emerald, you not have all full lifetime of listing to all of the Thin Lizzy music, reading the stories and wishing that you could have been to just 1 of their concert, you have the next best thing, their most brilliant music, you are going to have a great life
One of their best. Phil, gone but not forgotten.
Fint
H JLC for sure
H JLC the best
Definitely, absolute whopper.
NEVER Forgotten
Alright boys, we'd like a perfect rock song with some meaningful words and a great guitar solo and...er....by the way you have to fit it all in in 2 mins and 20 secs - fecking brilliant!
Amazing track - still sounds fresh 👍👌

Phil & the boys: Hold my beer
bikers everywhere loved lizzy . most played tracks on any juck box in any cafe bare etc bikers hung out . rip Phil . to soon you left us my man .
Soundtrack to my life, Thin Lizzy. Fantastic band. I always believed they never got the fame they deserved, way better that 95% of the sh*t nowadays.
I just turned 18 and my life will never be the same after listening to this 🎼🎸
One of the greatest guitar solos..
Did you know that Robbo played this solo using a Fender Stratocaster ?
@@TheHumbuckerboy No....that's interesting..
Brilliant - and Robbo was only 17 then!
@@redstar7292 amazing solo
Mark Knopfler (to Eric Clapton): hold my rhythm!
Phil would have been 70 years old today 20/8/19. RIP Mr. Lynott. 🍻
He died on my 21st birthday . I was bummed to say the least .
aight , here re the lyrics :
Don't believe me if I tell you
Not a word of this is true
Don't believe me if I tell you
Especially if I tell you
I'm in love with you
Don't believe me if I tell you
That I wrote this song for you
There just might be some other silly pretty girl
I'm singing it to
Don't believe a word
For words are so easily spoken
And your heart is just like that promise
Made to be broken
Don't believe a word
Cause words can tell lies
And lies are no comfort
When there's tears in your eyes
Don't believe me if I tell you
Not a word of this is true
Don't believe me if I tell you
Especially if I tell you
That I'm in love with you
Don't believe a word
No don't believe a word
Don't believe me don't believe me
Not a single word
👍👍👍👍 thanks
Romeo and Juliet on a bad trip. Rock n Roll Shakespeare!
Amazing lyrics!
I love this song, guitars, bass, drums, drive forward. Maybe the best song of Thin Lizzy, this wonderful band from Ireland
Lizzy had the best frontman ever. Charismatic and truly gifted. God bless you Philo. X
Lynott and bon Scott best frontmen in rock history.
Lemmy was also a fucking decent
Tin Lizzy. Not thin. Tin. Loved the Irishness. Charisma and gifted, could not agree more.
Well said
Met Phil back in 78, I was a teenager heading up the hill of Howth one day and Phil was on his way down, passing the Asgard. I knew who he was, and he gave me a big smile. I remember thinking how cool he was. Saw him in concert twice, will never forget, and passed him early one Sunday morning going over the halfpenny bridge in 81. I was deeply saddened when he passed. He was a hard core Irish man. Always made it known too. Irish Mother, Nigerian farther (who he never knew) born and raised in Crumlin, Dublin. Come to think of it, a hard core Dubliner too!
Great story. I think his father was actually Brazilian
.
I think he was born in Birmingham
Father wasn't Nigerian...guyanian...south American country north of Brazil
Well, in that case, you had better tell Philomena, she said Nigerian, but he wasn't around for long, in any case, Phil rightly was a staunch Irishman, knew the history and embraced the culture, and rightly considered himself so, despite spending a lot of time in UK too. @@patrickthomas4680
@@viniciusreisyt his father was afro Guyanese
What charisma, what a distinctive and instantly recognisable style, great songs, great riffs, great solos, great drummer.... I could go on....
Many times that mirrored bass shone in my eyes growing up in Ireland , God rest yer soul Phil
The greatest wah-wahed single-note start to a guitar solo in the history of the instrument and the pedal. A bit specific, I know, but it just is... :)
What do yer reckon came second?
@@paulburns1333 Maybe Hendrix, Burning of the Midnight Lamp. I'm trying to think of a Dave Brock one, give me a mo.
O_-
@@paulburns1333 I'm going to throw my hat in with Anthem by Rush
Nobody ever played better 30 second guitar solos than Robbo did in those days
Never ever gonna be a band like Thin Lizzy. Love them, miss them.
One of the best rock songs of all time.
That rythm, that sound, that voice, that guitars, that drummer:)
Killer on the lose have a listen
Drums and bass the balls of band
and that album‘johnny the fox’☝🏻
Absolute perfection
True...the drums are very very good.
The tragedy of this video is that the cameraman doesn't stay with Bri during his solo, bummer.
Another great 70s band you don’t hear much on the radio thank god for TH-cam
Is there still radio going on? Get with the times mate
@@bnap3221 no muppet read it again it says “another BAND you don’t hear much of on the radio” thank god for TH-cam
This song plays on my local radio all the time for years (I listen in the car obviously, like 30 minutes a day, and still hear it a lot).
They also had a period of playing Budgie's "Time to remember" super often, but it disappeared like 3 years ago. A pity, incredible song, maybe not great for morning radio though :D
The best band that ever came out of Ireland and ever will

I love Brian Robbertson. He was a Genius. Really underrated guy.
Frank Arnold I agree
Agreed. The master of the 30 second guitar solo. One of the things that made Thin Lizzy rise when other hard rock bands were falling from favour was that they didn't drag songs out longer than they needed to be. Part of the reason they were able to do that was Brian being able to put more into 30 seconds or less than most guitarists put into a 3 minute solo.
The same applies to Scott and Snowy.
@ moonage daydream Scott Gorham played the solo ( and perhaps all of the guitar parts) on the song 'Bad Reputation'.
Makes me laugh when people say Iron Maiden owe so much to lizzy. Lizzy were leagues ahead of them. They had a charismatic frontal in Phil. Maiden had Er, Bruce Dickinson. Lizzy had Robbo and Scott firing on all 6. Maiden had er can't even remember their names. Lizzy had the wonderfully erratic Brian Downey on drums. Iron Maiden didn't. Maiden had some dodgy looking skeleton thing having a bad hair day as a stage prop. Lizzy didn't need one. Their music spoke for them. Maiden had songs like Run To The Hills as fans favourites. Lizzy had Warriors and Emerald.......Need I go on?
the days they came back on the scene with the boys are back in town were just fabulous , the music , the weather , the football, the 70's were unbeatable
Iron Maiden, Bon Jovi, Metallica etc all took a huge amount of influence from Lizzy yet none of them bettered them. I mean, think of this, Thin Lizzy even blew Queen off stage. How many more bands can say that? .
This song doesn't age still amazing
Saw them in Malvern in 1975 or 76 . Brilliant Concert , fabulous band . Will never forget it . Such a tragedy that this talented Phil man had to go the way so many other talented people have gone. . I guess he must have been hurting somehow . But Thin Lizzy was my favourite group all those years ago . Eric Bell on guitar on the earlier stuff. The Rocker . What a solo . And then Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson . Two brilliant guitarists and the world famous Gary Moore. A better line up you just couldn“t dream up !
My favourite band as a young living in Malvern but I missed them. First gig there was be bop deluxe aged 14 Jan 1977. I later edited the local rag but that's another story.
This tales me right back to being a teenager again. Jesus christ almighty! Where did the years go? RIP Phil.
In my top three band of all time, used to listen to this in the early 80's with my dad in the car when waiting for my mum to finish work. Too much to go into here but lyrics, phrasing, delivery, solos, stage presence and voice unreal. Today's music has nothing on them and this generation!
Whats your top 3?
For real.
Live and dangerous , best album ever produced.🇬🇧
Get that dirty disgusting flag of this post
He's fuckin irish there irish
Real diversity started in this era . Real people , real music . It was a great time to be young 👍
It was awesome to be young then
Diversity wasn't a word. People just played real music ... Awesome times! Saw Lizzy live a couple of times just after the Live & Dangerous tour.
Amazing band, amazing music. Absolutely first class rock .
Año 2022. Me sigue pareciendo uno de los mejores solos de guitarra de la historia del rock
Im very VERY nearly 60 and this lot were a huge part of my life (the discovery part) shall we say...😋
Phil, scott & both brian's were the mega line up for me... just fantastic! Just fan'bloody'tastic...
For me it all came crashing down when Brian R. Had to go😑... and then down the pipes it all went, snowy white, gary moore and onwards towards the 'thunder & lighting' album and then the end of the man himself... many moons after i dragged my arse to see blackstar riders (lizzy) with scott & brian D.... wish i hadn't... RIP lizzy.
Robertson and Gorham, sheer perfection.
If Jim Hendrix and Phil had ever joined up it would have been the greatest combination in history.
The best song ever in my opinion.....
Krister Persson kristen your beautifull lizzy girl
Smoke on the water mannn!!! 035 03- I’ll shut up.....
For real tho I agree
My favourite Lizzy song hands down. So well written
Alex Lala Yes, best version on the Renegade LP, with slow half leading to a great finale.
Agree with that.
Don't you mean the version that appears on Gary Moore's first album 'Back on the Streets' ? The original 'Renegade ' album doesn't feature this song . Is it included as a bonus track on a re-issue ?
Not a word of this is true
After Dancing in the Moonlight
One of the best guitar solos ever delivered!
Well said guys they played Still in Love with you on Planet Rock the live version I almost cried what a Band Especially with Robbo oh man I miss Phil
There used to be a comment on a TH-cam video of this song - perhaps this one - something like 'This solo will steal your car, fuck your sister and burn your house down', and that is indeed how I feel about it!
1:03 playing like a boss with a cig in his hand
Robbo played 70% of his Solos with a cigarette 😂
Harry Pfeffer haha First time I see this lol
I know it’s amazing
And a bottle of scotch ...or two!

@@TheHumbuckerboy Totally agree! Always had a pleasure listening to his lyrics and not just the voice, harmony, etc. Cant say the same thing about many other bands.
In my opinion the best solo in the lizzy catalogue. And if you disagree, I'd say you would have it in your top five at least. It has it all, the tremelo picking with wah...great phrasing the unusual note choice that sounds super cool 1:09 to 1:12....great vibrato and excitement throughout.

One of the most distinctive passionate voices in Rock History. One of very very few.
Phil lynott is one of the coolest guys to have lived.
Lizzy are the most original and unique sound of rock history. A mix of blues funk hard rock n rollin metal.
I think thats pretty naive to say but yea depends on taste i guess. Not saying i dont like thin lizzy, they were great.
@@p1TCHONEEE many appreciate the boys are back in town or albums like chinatown or thunder and lightning more hard rock style....i used to hate their first 4 albums... more pop or bluesey styled...then i dug deeper into them and i put the puzzle together and .....man can they play....!!!!! All genres included which opened my mind that was focused on hard n heavy rock...now i know how they progressed and built up their unique repetoire based on a fusion of branches of blues pop rock culminating with hard rock and heavy metal. That's their greatness and uniqness.
@@toredurgali8374 I dont doubt that but look where they got the inspiration for this style. You can find this kind of music was done before alot. It might not be your taste but thats my whole point. They made it unique because they mixed all their musical rootes without copying.
